Congratulations to both teams for a game well played.I do have a concern
about the fans for Bryce Valley. They ""booed" when LCA players were
anounced and again when the state title trophy was awarded. I do dot thing this
is right. As fans and parents of the game we need to show and teach the
kids good sportsmanship win or loose.
Nice win LCA. Sad reflection on BV fans as they booed loudly the announcement of
your title. You played with class and pose. Hats off to the BV players and the
head coach who were first class. BV team and coach you are awesome players and
people. Thanks BV coach for being so classy. LCA respects you and your kids
LCA appeared to be more of a 2A level team. They had been playing in 2A for
several years, prior to this year. Their enrollment numbers may have dropped
them back to 1A.As for the booing, it shouldn't happen. My guess is
the BV fans were booing because they felt LCA should have remained in 2A, where
it would have been equally competitive for both classes.BV played
tough and went 4-0 vs 2A teams this year, and finished 22-4 on the year, but
just couldn't take the lead down the stretch. BV can call themselves "rural
champs" of 1A.LCA vs South Seveir would have been a great
match-up. This LCA team was the best team that they've had.
LCA was moved up to 2A a few years back, but has never had the enrollment
numbers to actually be a 2A school. It was totally the decision of the UHSAA on
the realignment to move LCA back to 1A in all sports, even though LCA asked to
remain 2A. It is what it is.Hats off to the Bryce Valley players
and coaches, they never gave up, brought it back to a close game, and bore the
lose with dignity and class. I was frankly astounded to hear the boos from
their fans when LCA was announced as champion, surely a poor reflection on the
community and school which the boys had done so much to proudly represent.Congrats to the LCA team who started the season 2-8 (although playing
schools such as Fremont and Copper Hills in that stretch) and never lost sight
of the goal to compete for the state title.
I attend the 1A tournament most years but was not able to go to the championship
game this year. Any year a private school is in the championship all of the
other small town schools ban together and cheer against them. I would not say
that all the boos came from only Bryce Valley.
A little good natured booing as the starting line-ups are announced, or even at
the officials is okay as long as it's not ugly and done with a spirit of fun.
My problem is that once the game is done, you should just cheer for the winners
or shut up. Booing at that point is being a poor sport. I was really shocked
that there was booing during the trophy presentation. There is a time and place
to debate the merits of a private school being in 1A, but being bad sports at
the end of the tournament isnÂt the place or means to make that argument.
We really can't control the fans and how they react to a loss. I have to agree
that all the boos were NOT coming from BV fans alone....MOST IMPORTANTLY, these
tow teams played a great championship game. Each team played tough and I
believe the game could have went either way. Both sides of fans brought an
excitement throughout the gym. Bryce Valley Mustangs fought back and LCA Eagles
kept pushing forward. Good job to all the teams in the 1A State Tournament.
This is such a fun time for Rural Utah. Thank you to all who support the teams,
coaches, and schools to have a great tournament. Good job to all the 1A
Just to give everyone a perspective of what RURAL 1A Basketball is all
about.....Of the 15 BV Varsity players, 12 have had a grandparent graduate from
Bryce Valley. Two of the remaining 3 have parents and grandparents that
graduated from other schools in Region 20... Not to mention the 2 coaches also
graduated from a Region 20 school. I bet most Rural Communities can all say the
same. Pretty remarkable to have kids compete at the level they do. When other
kids are going to movies, bowling, or to the mall, our kids do cross-country,
baseball, track, wrestling, FFA, FCCLA, Student Government, and yes Basketball
with their friends that they have gone to school with since kindergarten! So,
are we complaining about LCA coming back to 1A because of numbers??? Think
again...We are just proud that our life-long teams can compete with all the
Further the uhsaa and coaches are aware of move ins helping some rural teams win
Well, having played in the State Championship against Bryce Valley this past
weekend, I can personally say they had the best class of all the teams we played
there, along with talent. This staff of coaches and team of players were very
worthy opponents who understood what sportsmanship was all about. Concerning the
booing from the crowd when we accepted our trophy, i will say this: Many people
wish they could have been in our shoes accepting that 1st place trophy and i
take those boos as the biggest compliment. None of the seniors of other teams
around the state of 1A were fortunate enough to experience what our team did.
And although it may have been viewed as unsportsmanlike by Bryce Valley's fans,
i assure you there were plenty of other teams there who chipped in on booing.
Music to my ears.
Well said, RuralFan! I agree with everything you said 100 percent. My husband
and I graduated from Bryce Valley, but now we live in American Fork. Having 1A
private schools from the city compete against 1A rural schools is absolutely
ridiculous. I hope the UHSAA realizes what a big mistake they are making.
Congratulations to an amazing Bryce Valley basketball team this year!
This anti private, because you are different, is the same argument that angers
you over evangelicals unwilling to vote for mitt Romney because he is Mormon,i e
different. Different has value if you are willing to see it.
Lets not forget Bryce Valley won it a couple of years ago with some move ins.
All small schools could be accused of recruiting. I think one of their players
on this years team moved in from St. George last year. I do like LCA's player
embracing the boo's.
