Can Utah win a Division 1 basketball game? In a word...No.

What on earth was that football line in here for?

BYU has a shot at the upset, but I think it will turn out like that Wake Forest game a few years back - BYU plays well, keeps it close, but just can't pull it out in the end. A "quality" loss but still a loss. An upset would be so sweet though.

Most likely not, but they at least probably won't humiliate themselves.

I watched one of the recent Baylor games and noticed the color announcer kept repeating how the three bigs for Baylor don't use their feet very well, relying on their combined wingspans to cover ground. BYU could easily use that to their advantage, as not moving your feet can get you into foul trouble.

Love to see how Nate does against their bigs with his ability to score at the basket under duress.

It'll be interesting to see whether a loud, full Marriott Center (only nosebleed seats are left) and BYU's overall scoring punch can win this one. No one this year to concentrate defenses on!

Beating Baylor is quite possible, especially after the poor showing against Utah. I expect a much better game this week.

If we can get the crowd there (23K+) then we can have a good shot. I think finals are over though??? May lack some students. Then the guys need to play like they can then I think we have a good shot. If they come out flat or play only so so then Baylor is going to win. But BYU gets 4 extra points for being at home and 2 more if we get more than 18K in the stands and 2 extra if we sell the place out. Come on fans. Wish I could come. ASU just does not cut it.

Any good team can beat another good/great team on any given night. Now if you play 7 games I think Baylor may win 5 but I think we often do not give our guys enough credit. Look at how USU beat us and WS beat USU and then we killed WS. USU got the 8 extra points the night we played them at home.

If this were the Utes I would say Uh.....No!

    Go Cougars!!

I'll be there cheering the Cougs from the nosebleed section this Sat.

Doman being considered for OC at UCLA? Really? That is hard to believe.

I don't think he'd take it, even if it were true. I think he has designs on being Bronco's heir apparent.

If BYU plays like they did against Weber State, they have a shot at winning. Carlino is the X factor in all of this. Will he improve the overall play of the Cougars or will his insertion into the line-up disrupt the chemistry? I'm inclined to think it's the former, but one never knows for sure.

BYU hung with Wisconsin for 30 minutes, before getting buried by a slew of 3 pointers. If BYU keeps it close, I'm inclined to think the magic of the Marriott Center will carry us to victory in the end.

I thought this was a basketball article. In a word, BYU has two chances to beat a ranked Baylor club; slim and none. They don't have the athletes to get the job done. When they get in a game with drastically inferior teams such as Utah, and don't get the ball in the hole early, and let a Utah hang around they way they did; it doesn't suggest to me they will come out flying around with Baylor and get the ball in the basket early. I may be wrong, since they will be on the Cougar floor; and I hope I am wrong; but Baylor appears to be a superior team, even though they are on the road. If BYU has any thoughts of being a force in the WCC, then they had better win this game; otherwise they will not contend for the WCC chamnpionship in my opinion this season, because they are undersized, don't jump, and aren't quick enough to go with the good teams. And they will need to hit a high percentage of their shots.

I'd like to know who the officials will be for the game, before I weigh in on Katz's prediction. BYU was able to beat Oregon, despite some one-sided officiating. But if Baylor had a say in who the refs will be and they bring some from back here in Big 12 country, it will be tough for the Cougars, even with a full house of fans to support them.

Have you seen Baylor's schedule? The only tough team they've had is SDSU at home. I haven't heard of half the teams on their schedule, and I'm sure some are lower division. Baylor at #6 is way too high for a team who has played absolutely no one yet, and no ranked teams. BYU can for sure beat these guys. Baylor still has to play 3 days before playing BYU. BYU has all the advantages in this game, and they get that stud player from UCLA for the game. I honestly think BYU win will. Baylor is so overrated (literally). BYU has already played some tough emotional games and won handidly (Oregon, and their arch rival on the rivals floor). Baylor hasn't really had that emotional game yet.

Pretty sure Matt Carlino will be an excellent addition with his shooting but we have to remember that he did not see the floor in 7 games for the Bruins last year. He was not a top recruit and is a bit of an enigma. These people who are saying he was a big time recruit are misinformed. Utah refused to guard Winder or Cusick from the perimiter and that said volumes. Although they have done an admirable job we need a point capable of putting up double figures each night. It is hard to understand why a player would give up his senior year of high school and the development that would take place to be just another freshman at UCLA. Best of luck but don't put to much hope in Matt based on his past performance.

    @Jeff Call...
I'll be at the game... so I'll let you know when it's over... but it will depend on whether Aboua and Davies... both of whom have had inconsistancy problems of late are in sync with the others...and I really wouldn't use Oregon as a key measuring stick....this isn't the PAC of the 60's...70's and 80's...especially if you out of necessity have to include Utah. Need I say more???

Meanwhile...so since things are really so slow at DNEWS that you have now included a top 10 list of QB's who have transferred out of BYU...I'm wondering when the list of Top Business School majors and Law School majors who also left BYU will be coming out???

    @selway

Matt Carlino was a top recruit and would have played at Indiana if not for coaching changes there. He graduated from high school after his junior year and went to UCLA. The big reason that he didn't play in the first seven games there was because of a concussion suffered in practice. He started practicing with BYU in January and usually guarded Jimmer. It is interesting to note that his uncle was a Majerus assistant and Matt might be a Ute if Majerus were still there. Carlino might not be the next Jimmer but he will be a solid point guard and along with Winder will give the Cougars consistency at the point for four years. Expect BYU to beat Baylor.

the last 10 minutes, you think Baylor can handle the high altitude and our fans? We should be fine.

Will Heaps going to change his mind to stay if Doman leaves. Maybe, but Doman won't leave just yet (somewhere 30 years later - IF).

  • selway Paul, Idaho
    Dec. 14, 2011 9:21 a.m.

The concussion was a facter but lets be clear the reason he transfered was because of no playing time for the bruins who are pitiful this year. I heard he was ranked about 30 at point coming out of high school which is pretty good but not close to where young Haws and Emery will be. Have to think a year of basketball maturity will give Matt an edge and think he is up to the task.

  • IDC Boise, ID
    Dec. 14, 2011 10:29 a.m.

If BYU shoots well and Baylor doesn't, BYU will win. Should be a good game. Oregon had good athletes and BYU wiped the floor with them.

I don't see Carlino being a big factor as he hasn't played games with BYU yet. I think he will by the end of the season and for years to come. I am expecting him to be good though with offers from Indiana and UCLA.

If BYU beats Baylor, I would expect them to crack the top 25, just like the football team will if they beat Tulsa. Go Cougars!

Yes, BYU can and WILL beat Baylor on Saturday. This ain't no Wichita State and this ain't the same team that pulled off that miserable showing.

Brandon Doman to UCLA? GOOD RIDDANCE! Don't let the door smack your tail on the way out! Please UCLA take him! Take him like yesterday! It is the Skyline Eagle about ya that I find easiest to dislike..... Then, the lackluster performance while a player and a not so impressive first impression as the OC there would be no tears if the separation happened.

Pac12 loves U - you are wrong on two fronts... You had better go do some better research as far as your classification of players on either team are concerned. It wasn't just the loss of Jimmer that had people making fools of themselves and picking the Y to finish in the middle of the pack this season....

What was the real Coach K's first season record? Did he lose 7 straight to division one foes? On a per point basis the basketball win was larger than the football win.... Only if you factored in 20 safeties would the football win loom larger... Not only point wise, but your sorry Utes have lost 6 straight to us and 10 of 11... The last win coming in 2009. The next win not coming until 2018 or beyond!

    @selway

You're right about Carlino. Like so many of the Cougars, he is young and will eventually be pressed by Hawes and Emory (good problem to have if you're Coach Rose), but for now, he could make the point more productive. As long as you mentioned young Hawes and Emory, can you picture a future BYU team with those two, a seasoned Winder and Carlino, a veteran Harrison, Collinsworth, Austin and Hawes and possibly (long shot, I know) Jabari Parker. That could be a very good team.

  • Bifftacular Spanish Fork, Ut
    Dec. 14, 2011 4:03 p.m.

Can they? Yes. Will they? No. BYU is a pretty decent basketball team this year but nothing special. They'll win the games they have to win, go to the NCAA Tournament and lose in the first round. They will not beat Baylor but I don't think they'll be embarrassed in the loss either. They should have beat Utah by 40 but couldn't put the hammer down - a sign of an average team.

You are hanging your hat on football, yet you thought you'd try your hand at a little basketball smack hoping we wouldn't notice.

But back to basketball, good luck against Idaho State and Portland this week. Last chance for a win this year.

After U pull an ofer in conference play you'll find out just how much the "PAC 12 loves U." U are an automatic win for any team you play.

    Dec. 14, 2011 7:38 p.m.

If BYU plays like they did against Weber they win this game, if they play like they did against the utes we lose. BYU has alot of young players, Noah and Abuo are the only seniors, we need Rogers to have a big game and either Zilstra or Winder/Carlino to shoot well from the outside. It will be a fun game to watch and should be competitive.

  • riddlemethis Clearfield, UT

    PAC 12 Loves U:

That senior veteran team you're talking about only has 2 seniors and 8 freshman.

And in 2 years from now, most of the U players will have transferred (again), so waiting for the Utes to get experience and then compare the two won't do U any good.

  • coleman51 Orem, UT
    Dec. 15, 2011 5:46 a.m.

The only chance that BYU can beat Baylor is for the Cougars to hit their three-point shots. With Perry Jones and company, they will get nothing inside. In every position, Baylor has better players who will go high in the NBA draft. BYU will face a team that is quick and very talented. Predictions mean nothing unless BYU plays it's best game this season. Our shooting like we did with Utah will put us in a hole against Baylor that we will never get out.

Yes, that beat down was a beauty. I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks for asking!

Don't you worry about us, you need to worry about beating us first. You better hope BYU's coaching staff has figured out how to beat Utah or it will be 3 years in a row, 8 out of the last 11, 56-34-4.

  • jarka-rus Layton, Utah

    Elmer Pudd

haha, nothing to worry about, like I said I know your team will be bottom dwellers for years to come. And you better hope your coaching staff figures out how to recruit. And how to actually win in the Pac-10.2. But I know that the big brother syndrome will keep you just looking at the one non-conf. foe that you always have to beat and couldn't care less about conference wins. Yep byu lost to the U, but won 9 others, so byu is still going bowling and will be ranked in the top 25 if they win. U not so much even if you somehow beat G-Tech which will not happen.

  • Y Grad / Y Dad Richland, WA

And all Utah needs to do is figure out how to beat Colorado.

    And Washington.

    And UCLA.

    And Arizon State.

    And Cal.

    And of course, USC.

Otherwise, no matter who you beat how bad in the pre-season, your seasons will be very disappointing.

Oh, and by the way, don't look now, but Washington State is gaining on you too.
