And here I thought the Utes would be an average Pac12 team. Silly me.

Of course I joke, take it easy. The schedule is going to lighten up considerably and the Utes will win 4-5 in conference this year. The toughest part is over and once Jon Hays focuses more on hitting his target than flashing the U sign, he will be just fine. And so will U.

A win this weekend will do wonders for your team and there will be a whole new positive outlook on the season.

The tale of two teams. A very good first half team, and a high school team in the second half. It's very hard to watch. Way too many mistakes! Penalties at the worst moment, fumbles, new QB thinking he is Aaron Rodgers. It will take some time to right this ship. However, we will play in the Rose Bowl, before the Cougs play in a BCS game.

    @d'anconia

"meaningless"? It obviously means a great deal to you. The truth is utah is overmatched and outclassed and it isn't because the pac10 is all that great either. utah would be struggling if they were still in the mwc this year. Their recruiting has been terrible at qb and oline and mearly average at the other positions. Most of us saw this coming last year but the fact utah was able to beat a bunch of patsies early on last season gave both utah "fans" and the coaches a false sense of well being. Once they played some decent teams it all came crashing down yet utah "fans" still spent the off season claiming they would "win the pac10 south title" and perhaps go to the rose bowl.

Now that it is obvious the "haters" were correct utah "fans" whine that they have to put up with the "I told you's". Well whittingham is correct about one thing, no one cares. No one feels sorry for you. Actually most of us take a bit of a sadistic pleasure in watching the arrogant, delusional, and undeserving "fan"base that front runs utah athletics get their just due.

    LOL!

    D'Anconia,

I for one hope that the Utes can turn their season around, but I can't help but chuckle that you label the "smack" as "meaningless." The fact that you address it (preemptively, at that) demonstrates that it clearly has meaning to you.

It all starts this weekend at Pitt. I think the Utes can pull it off, but I don't think it'll be a blowout.

  • Arynen Midvale, UT
    Oct. 11, 2011 11:42 a.m.

Seriously Moderate? You can't compare. Each game is different and no two teams match up the same as they do against others. Why do Utes always have to compare themselves to the Cougars to make themselves feel better?

    @moderate

Irrelevent. BYU is not in the pac10, utah is. utah "fans" are the ones dealing with a losing record and the very real possibility of not even making the New Mexico Bowl. The fact you have to bring BYU up just shows what all of us knew to be true anyway and that is that everything utah does is measured by their "fans" against BYU. You simply will always hold yourselves up to BYU. It is actually quite amusing for the rest of us to witness.

    LOL!

Duckhunter, you got it right and I find it really funny that the u fans just don't "get it".

I really believe that Pitt will really come after Hays and if he is hurt or just gets what ever confidence he has shaken, he will be worthless the rest of the year. Look for the u to win one, maybe two game the rest of the way. It will be funny to "mark down" all the excues this year and then for the following years to come on why the mighty bcs bust'n, real National Champion, better than anyone else, uties are at the bottom of the conference of chumps.

Utah has some good chances to move up with games against the 6th, 7th, and 8th teams coming up.

The Utes will be fine long term! They have a great program run by great coaches. I think during most years they would be near the top of the Pac-12. It's just a rough year with injuries and bad luck.

My Cougars on the other hand... I wish I could feel so optimistic about them. Seems like they've been getting steadily more mediocre the past few seasons. Hopefully it's just that they're a young inexperienced team. But it seems like where Utah, BSU, & TCU have been able to break through, BYU doesn't look like it's close. Every year expectations are high but they always come crashing down in a most painful way sooner or later. (See BYU vs. FSU 2009 or BYU vs. Utah 2011 for examples)

  • Portland Trail Blazers Sandy, UT

looks like BYU will get a win against a Pac 12 team before Utah this season.

  • Duckhunter Hunter Alpine, UT
    Oct. 11, 2011 1:03 p.m.

Until Utah proves otherwise, they deserve to be where they are in these "rankings." It's obvious that they haven't played well, but they have played some of the stronger teams in the conference, with a back up QB commanding the offense.

I look for Utah to have a better back half of the season. I will stick with my original forecast for the year of 7-5 or 6-6, which would be a successful inauguration to the PAC-12. Sure, it's not what Utah has been used to in the MWC, but this is a tougher week in and week out schedule.

As the Utes get more depth, I can see them competing in this league.

Now, to address the trolls who have selective memory:

"I wonder if there is any circumstance where some of the above posters wouldn't bring BYU into a Ute article comments. Insecure?"

We have to continually silence trolls like you. 54-10 should do the trick.

Setting my Ute hater goggles aside, I still do not think Utah will beat Pitt or Cal. Two difficult road games and I just dont see the utes winning. Besides having a rookie QB, (who is more concerned with flashing the U sign than hitting his recievers) U also have a possibility of missing one of your best recievers (Christopher) and one of your best corners (McGill)to injury this week. If those guys play, I obviously think U have a better chance and could go 1-1 in those games.

After that is when Utah can and probably will make some upward movement in the Pac12 rankings. The rest of the schedule is very beatable and with a few more games under Hays belt those are games you should see some major improvement.

Now, BYU has an entirely different set of problems. I am genuinely concerned about going to Corvallis and losing to one of the worst teams in college football. And what would that make BYU? You are correct.

There. Now Im putting back on my blue goggles because being able to see so clearly hurt my eyes.

  • giantfan Farmington, UT

There really is a lot to worry about if you're a Ute fan. This year was really the best opportunity for Utah to go to the Pac-12 Championship game since they had everything going for them in terms of USC being on probabtion, not having to play the top-2 teams in the Pac-12 (Oregon and Stanford) and playing the best team in the division (minus USC) at home (ASU), not to mention that Arizona is way down this year and UCLA is STILL way down. If not this year, then when? Utah might still make it bowl eligible for 2011 and I see that as their best Pac-12 season for years to come. That will seriously hurt recruiting and fan interest. Can you say 20,000 at RES? But hey, at least they'll have all that money from the revenue sharing (which fans shouldn't care a lick for if it doesn't produce results on the field)!!

Let me take this one for you Duckhunter. A troll is someone who is traditionally a fan of one team(BYU for example) who posts negative comments on the board of the other team (say Utah). So in this case, I would not be a troll since my comments are always pro-Utah and this is a Utah article. You would be the troll since you are pro-BYU posting negative comments on a Utah artcile. When I post on a BYU article? Then I would be the troll (which I am quite often).

  • JosephMother Farmington, UT

The Utes and their fans will be all right, because if I understand correctly, the only things that matter to them in terms of a successful season are:

    1) Did they beat BYU?
    2) Are they in a BCS Conference?

Heck, they could go winless the rest of the year, finish up 2-10 and go throw a parade! Yee Haw!!!

Actually, the definition of an internet troll is "an internet user who sends inflammatory or provocative messages designed to elicit negative responses or start a flame-war."

You see, quite a few Ute fans posting on their own articles (by mentioning BYU in a derogatory way) would be in and of themselves a troll. This goes both ways, of course.

Sure are a lot of assumptions made about the Utes first year in the PAC. They are members not just there for one year.
Perhaps BYU fans should focus on a conference invite for their team.

  • Duckhunter Hunter Alpine, UT

    Doormat,

No post season? Easy there, fella. 7 games remain and a bowl bid is still on the radar for Utah. The sledding will be tough, but is is still possible. True, it will be disappointing not to make a high profile bowl, BUT Utah's situation will still be better than BYU's.

Better opponent. More $ PLUS revenue from all other PAC-12 teams that make bowl appearances. Under the assumption that BYU makes a BYU, which is a safe bet, BYU gets to keep what they make all to themselves. It will, however, be SUBSTANTIALLY less than Utah's cut.

We'll also have 54-10 in our back pocket.

    Ouch!

  • midpacmajor Salt Lake City, Utah
    Oct. 11, 2011 3:28 p.m.

"Sure are a lot of assumptions made about the Utes first year in the PAC."

And most of those assumptions came from Utah fans who have been predicting since day 1 of Utah's invite to the PAC 12 that the Utes would be smelling roses this season or, at the very least, be playing in the first PAC 12 championship game.

The Utes had the skids greased to slide effortlessly into the championship game with a pathetically weak division, USC on probation, no Oregon or Stanford on the schedule, and playing Utah's only serious division challenger at home, and the Ute's still haven't been able to get off the starting line. It could very easily be late October before the Utes win their first PAC 12 game.

    @dave s

I actually have never wanted BYU to go to the big 12 so I'm pretty happy with how things are going. But of course we all know you are just blowing hot air about having "moved on". You comment on BYU articles all of the time, you bring BYU up in comments on utah articles. Your team was going to be mediocre with or without injuries, every team has injuries. The truth is I know, and every single BYU fan knows, that utah has always, still does, and will always, compare themselves to BYU. utah "fans" like yourself are just front runners and will quickly disappear as utah slips into bottom of the pac oblivion. You won't be anywehere to be found during basketball season as there isn't a sinlge utah basketball "fan" left and sadly within a year or to of continued football futility there won't even be any of you around to taunt for that sport either.

The true Utah Fan is such a rare breed that they almost don't exist. The utah "fan" however, of which you are a perfect representative, exists in mediocre numbers when the going is good. That never lasts.

  • Mormon Ute Kaysville, UT

The only reason Ute fans mention BYU in their comments on article like this is they know you'll be coming along soon to read them. Otherwise, what would be the point.

As for the Utes, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. The experience of playing tougher teams every week will make the team stronger and improve our ability to recruit better talent on the 2nd and 3rd teams. Be patient fellow Utes. Stay with Coach Witt. He knows what he's doing.

    Duckhunter Hunter

A meaningless win over an irrelevant opponent that was only the 10th most important game on your schedule is the highlight of Utah's first season in the PAC 12 that you'll carry in your back pocket?

In other words, if BYU hadn't self-destructed and given away the game to Utah, the Utes would have nothing to show for this season.

But, as usual, the only thing Utah fans seem concerned with is $$$. Utah fans should be demanding a rebate from increased ticket prices after the pathetic show the Utes have managed in RES.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT

I assume you were actualy refering to "duckhunter hunter" and not to me? "duckhunter hunter" also posts under the screen names "articuno BYU", "54-10", "duckhunterr", "hondo", "officer coolguy", "kosta fesenko", and I suspect several more but I haven't been able to comfirm those yet. He'she tries to cover it up by often times posting under 2 or more of those screen names in the same article just like he has done here.

He isn't particularly smart as he will sometimes forget to change the location part under the screen name which is why "hondo" has lately been posting from "Alpine" when he always posted from "Springville" previously, or why "kosta fesenko" sometimes posts from SLC but sometimes from Alpine or why the same thing occurs with several of the other screen names this person uses.

It is also easy to spot the similar words, phrases, and other venacular that this person uses in posts from all of the above screen names. Of course it is actually pretty fun for me that he tries to use derivatives of my screen name as it shows he has a severe obsession with me.

Did you read my post? If so, you either have reading comprehension problems or have taken bits and pieces of what I said and manipulated them for your own worthless diatribe.

I was responding to a Y fan's pathetic attempt to belittle the Utes. The sledding will be tough, but Utah will end in a better bowl than BYU, play a better opponent in that bowl, and make more money doing it. And, we do have the 44 point beatdown, to boot.

Utah's goal, I can speculate, was to win the South (much loftier than beat BYU). That won't happen this year, which is disappointing, but not surprising. All along, I've said that Utah would finish this year at 7-5 or 6-6. The team is still very much on course to realize that forecast.

Utah's depth will improve with improved recruiting and competition. Couple that with top notch coaching and more money and the future is bright! You can and should go wallow in mediocrity as you play teams that would probably get beat by the better HS teams. Enjoy.

BYU 4-2, with a road win over a BCS opponent
Utah 2-3, with no wins over BCS opponents

One win does not a season make (except for desperate Utah fans trying to salvage anything they can from a season that's turning into a complete disaster).

Using Utah fan calculus, we should assume that Utah would beat Texas by 43 points in Austin. Face it, Utah simply got lucky when BYU imploded.

    As the U Spins

We beat down BYU, which proves how pathetic BYU is, but we're not pathetic, because we beat BYU, which is pathetic, except that BYU isn't as pathetic as we are because BYU actually has a winning record and has a win over a BCS team, which really makes us look pathetic.

Reading through these comments makes my day. Everyone is saying that Utah fans are making excuses. Haven't see any. We have just been getting beat. Plain and simple. Loving all of the BYU "fans" accusing Utah fans of having an inferiority complex while they are commenting on a Utah article. I wonder what made the trolls come back. After all, there were no trolls on these articles after BYU got blown out by Utah. What made them come back?

Why so much doom and gloom from BYU fans. Wasn't BYU 1-4 after week 5 last year?

Granted we don't have the same cupcakes that made Heaps look like a Heisman candidate but still I like our chances to go at least 6-6 just like BYU.

Now only if we can get a Ute alum in the replay booth like you know who did in their 6th game last year.

Around the Pac-12: Newbies see season shushing downhill

Well, there is always ski season for Utah and Colorado, which figure to again be national powers in that sport.

And surely no Pac-12 team can keep up with either the Utes or the Buffs on the slopes.

But so far this fall, its been a difficult transition to the conference for both of the new members, each winless against Pac-12 opposition.

Is it a one-sport aberration? Perhaps not. In mens basketball, its likely that Colorado and Utah will be picked at the bottom of the Pac-12.

So is it only mens sports? Not based on fall results. In womens soccer, Colorado is 0-4-1 in the Pac-12, and while Utah is 3-2, the Utes havent beaten a first-division opponent. In volleyball, Colorado is 0-9 and Utah is 2-7, including a win over Colorado.

All the talk about the Utes being bottom-dwellers in the PAC 12...

    is coming true!

    OUCH!

it's very simple; since that Utah-BYU game

BYU is 3-0, with a dramatic win that has become a youtube sensation
Utah is 0-2, with two humiliating losses and back-to-back turnover fests

Oh well there is always next year. Oh wait! BYU is not in the Big 12. Where they would get chewed up in a meat grinder by OU & OSU.

BYU lost by one-point on the road to #21/#22 Texas, a team with only one loss, to #3/#1 ranked Oklahoma.

If you consider a Top 25 team with only one loss "awful", what does that say about Utah, which was destroyed at home by a similarly ranked ASU? You're lucky Utah is in the Pathetic 12, because the Utes would get destroyed in the Big 12.

The Utes are fulfilling their role as punching bags for the big dogs of the PAC 12 nicely.

I enjoy your theory about the same poster being all of those different screen names. I've seen you post that at least five times now and I laugh every time I see it. First of all you can't just select which city you want the screen name to show. It will show the same city for each screen name you have. Go ahead and see for yourself.

The Utes will be just fine, it will take some time to adjust and learn how to compete in this league. I'm not worried about the future though, no matter how hard BYU trolls try and portray the gloom and doom of Utah athletics. Go Utes!

Why? Who is BYU that we care anymore? Go play 5 more Bo didly high schools. The week we cared about you is long gone it ended 54-10. Your jealousy is getting old. Even if you beat the best team in the country 90% of utes don't care anymore. That's what happens when your not relevant to us anymore. EVERY team goes through up and down cycles. Just so happens our ups land us on the national stage with BCS wins. I'll happily wait through the lows. Soon We will cycle through the pac-12 championship game every 2-3 years progressing to every 2 years and so on. Go troll the san Jose or utah state boards. I for one mostly ignore the Troll posts skimming through to see what relevant posters have to say. Like ute fans or fans from the teams we are playing that week or from the past. Yes occasionally a line from a troll post will catch my eye prompting a response. however Those will likely come to be more rare.

    dnsmith,

For the most part, Cougar nation isn't jealous of the Utes in the Pac-12. Sorry to burst your pride there. We congratulate the Utes for their recent 2 appearances on the national stage. What we're responding to is all the chest thumping of Utes who think they're all of a sudden better, or elite, because they are in an AQ conference. The irony is how the Utes were crying just a year ago that AQ doesn't mean the team is better, and now they've adopted that same attitude. We're laughing at the Utes because you're being served a healthy dish of reality that you aren't as elite and entitled as you've so pompously broadcast to the boys in blue and the rest of the nation.

If being in an AQ conference makes you elite, I guess Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Boston College, and the likes are more deserving than Boise St., TCU, Nevada, Houston, or Cincinatti? Who's to say USU could never rise up to be a national contendor? They have an excellent team this year that is only getting better. The elitism and entitlement attitude of the BCS/Utah is laughable.

    @utahute16

Actually you can select your city that you want your screen name to show. All you have to do is go to your profile and change it just like you can change your screen name. Obviously you need to study a little bit harder in website sign in class. LOL!

And yes kostaduckhunterrarticunohondocoolguy is one person. He will sometimes change the screen name but forget to change the location he is supposedly posting from. I've seen it on posts in the same threads and actually immediately pointed it out. For one his "hondo" personality used to have Springville as its location but he forgot to change it. His "duckhunter hunter" personality has posted with its location as Alpine, Highland and SLC. Same goes for most of his other screen names.

Now of course a ute "fan' like yourself doesn't pay attention because to you it is just like having multiple utah "fans" on here but it is pitiful to have to make up multiple personalities to try to give your other personalities credibility and backing. If I was a utah "fan" I would be embarrassed by it but I think part of being a utah "fan" is being shameless.

"That's what happens when your not relevant to us anymore."

It's laughable when Utah fans try to pretend that BYU is no longer relevant to them. EVERY Utah article is filled with references to BYU, often before a single BYU fan has even posted and Utah fans, including you, have already posted the score of a supposedly meaningless game hundreds of times.

Utah fans are delusional if they really believe that the Utes will challenge for a conference championship more often than once a decade. Take your cue from Arizona and Arizona State who were both big shots in the WAC and thought they'd have similar success in the PAC 10. 30 years later, Arizona still hasn't played in the Rose Bowl and ASU has only smelled roses twice.

0-3 so far in Utah's first season isn't surprising to those of us not wearing the crimson-colored glasses.

  • NightOwlAmerica SALEM, OR

    Truth Machine.

BYU fans are delusional if they really believe the will compete for the national championship. Does not matter if they are independent or BCS conference members.

And unfortunately for posters like yourself, there is more to conference affiliation than football. Both Arizona & ASU have won titles in other sports.
