It's not even mid-season yet. Talk about someone needing to fill a little more space on the sports section. The idea of this article at this point of the season is absolutely ridiculous!

  • SundanceKid27 OREM, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 11:34 a.m.

I will blame this article if the Utes don't even make it to bowl eligibility.

Answer: Fat Cats, and Jordan Wynn will need the bumpers up.

Washington played Colorado last week? I had a double header in my fantasy football, but I didn't know college has done that too.

  • Salemite Salem, Ut
    Sept. 28, 2011 12:11 p.m.

They won't go bowling this year. They will win two more games. They're lucky they are not playing Oregon or Stanford.

It's actually not so crazy to speculate at this point. We've all predicted where we think our teams will finish and the bowl tie ins are mostly locked into certain place teams from each conference. I think the Sun or Holiday Bowl is about right for the Utes, if we don't win our Division.

  • The Dixie Kid Saint George, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 12:29 p.m.

Wow, the Sun Bowl. Moving to the Pac-12 did wonders for you.

"They won't go bowling this year. They will win two more games."

That is a completely ridiculous prediction that won't come true. Utah is on track to win another 5 to 6 games. However, if by some crazy stretch of the imagination your prediction came true what would that say about the woeful state of BYU football? LOL!

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA
    Sept. 28, 2011 12:49 p.m.

I think playing in the Holiday or Sun Bowls would be awesome! But at present, we are 0-1 in Pac-12 play. So it's too soon for us to talk about the preseason.

Cougar fans on the other hand...They've been debating whether it'll be the Nat'l Championship, or some other BCS Bowl game dating back to Spring Training. It's NEVER too early for cougars to talk about bowl destinations. Not even in times where they really only have ONE! I hope you cougar fans like Ft. Worth. Haha!

I (do) feel that the Utes will become bowl eligible and qualify for a mid-to-upper level bowl game this year. But "Me, Myself, and I" is right, this is "way too early" to be even be talking about this kind of thing. There is "enough pressure" on teams already just to do well each week without adding more burden to the mix with articles like this - it is ridiculous! It is non-productive, and a crap-shoot, to even attempt any speculation at this point in time.

Good luck to Utah this weekend and throughout the rest of the season! I mean it. (I know that on other posts that I have made the comment, Go Huskies! Those comments were only intended to make a point with the "naysayers and blatant haters" of the Cougars - who would not otherwise support the Aggies unless they play BYU. That is ridiculous too.) I will always support Utah, except when they play BYU, which should be understandable to fans everywhere.

    Utah - 27
    Washington - 17

    Further Prediction:
    Utah - 31
    ASU - 21

    Honestly, Go UTAH!

  • KamUte South Jordan, UT

Sun Bowl may happen but hoping for Holiday Bowl at a minimum after playing Oregon in Pac 12 championship game.

    Lets see:
Armed Forces Bowl payout: $600,000 per team vs. Conference USA #3 (Central Florida, Tulsa or Marshall)

Sun Bowl payout: $2,000,000 per team vs. ACC # 4 (Miami or Florida State)

Also, Pac 12 playoff pays 2.2 million per team.

All games are on ESPN. Which position would you rather?

  • Ken Sandy, UT

I think 4 teams have a shot at the Rose Bowl. In terms of likelihood, I see it as follows:

    Oregon 50%
    Utah 30%
    Arizona State 10%
    Stanford 10%

  • just-a-fan Bountiful, UT

Utah has not beat a quality team. Let's give them at least 5 games before we start talking about bowls. Seems way too early for this article. One thing that is true is the Ute football team has already won as many games as their hoop team will win this year.

  • Johnny Triumph American Fork, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 1:48 p.m.

Doubt Utah can beat ASU, but we'll see. I hope the Utes do well but just don't see it happening. Middle-tier bowl, here come the Utes! Why wasn't the Vegas bowl mentioned in the talk?

  • WHAT NOW? Saint George, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 2:07 p.m.

    Bowl talk?

UTAH has to win 6 games (not including Montana State) to be bowl eligible.

    Correct?

When UTAH has accomplished the goal written above, then let's talk about "bowl" games.

The best way to sink a season is to start talking about championships and bowl games before you have won even the minimum amout of games you need to even qualify.

One game at a time; the next opponent is our toughest opponent; staying injury free with key players, are all foundational building blocks for a successful "bowl eligible" season.

    Enjoy the ride!

    54-10

    Go UTES!

  • rvalens2 Burley, ID
    Sept. 28, 2011 2:21 p.m.

You'll never hear Whittingham or his Ute team talking about Bowl games until after the season is over. That's one of the things that has made them winners . . . they try to never lose sight of their next opponent.

Go Utes . . . beat Washington and then Arizona State!

  • andrewute1 Salt Lake City, UT

I personally believe Utah will go to either the Alamo Bowl, or Holiday Bowl. Stanford or Oregon will both go to BCS bowl games, and Utah will either land in that 3rd or 4th place slot in the conference.

    Utah 30%

    I'd have it more like Oregon 40% Stanford 35% ASU 10% Utah 5% Boise 5% Other Pac-12 team 5%

Now I know what you're thinking... Boise? Well the new rules state that if the Big 10 or Pac-12 team is in the national championship game and if there is a team ranked high enough outside of the BCS the Rose Bowl has to take them, like it did with the Wisconsin-TCU game last year. It is conceivable that Oregon or Stanford could be in the national title game.

Maybe Utah should beat a BCS AQ team before they start shopping for Bowls?

  • Mike Johnson Stafford, VA
    Sept. 28, 2011 4:36 p.m.

The Montana State game is a counter for Utah in terms of bowl eligibility. They offer the requisite number of scholarships to be a counter for an FBS team. And they are ranked 4th in FCS.

This is the time when the pundits start putting in their predictions for bowls. They can do this because of the bowl conference tie ins.

After 1 (or possibly 2) BCS teams, the Pac-12 tie ins are in order Alamo Bowl vs Big 12 ($3M), Holiday Bowl vs Big 12 ($2M), Sun Bowl vs Big Ten ($1.9M), MAACO (Las Vegas) Bowl vs MWC ($1M), Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl ($850K), and New Mexico Bowl ($750K). These are the choices for Pac 12 teams. The pundits are basically predicting that Utah will be between the 3rd and 5th picked from the conference and that is probably a reasonable guess at this time. Higher and lower are both possible.

Let's get through Washington and Arizona State, at least, before we take any of the predictions seriously.

Utah is the only Pac 12 South team that Massey (one of the BCS computer guys) has with >50% prob of victory in all remaining games.

  • Juggernaut Cedar Hills, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 4:43 p.m.

I laugh every time a byu fan says that utah will not amount to anything this year. You realize when you do that you belittle byu that much more. You want utah to win from here forward to make that disaster of a loss look better. Am I wrong??

  • AZRods Maricopa, AZ
    Sept. 28, 2011 5:28 p.m.

Maybe they should even beat a PAC 12 team before they talk of bowling.
We're into October and they haven't done it yet.
USC thumped Utah, and ASU thumped USC, so don't assume that Utah will beat ASU.
That game will tell a lot about both teams though.
I would say pray for rain or snow because our desert boys don't do well in the cold wet stuff.
If it's a bright sunny day, ASU will prevail.

Juggernaut, you are wrong. BYU is not a good team. The utes win over them only proves how weak BYU is, not how good the utes are. As for the rest of the season, I really hope the utes qualify for the Las Vegas bowl. I would love to see Girlse State put another very large whupping on them. That was so fun to watch.

  • Rock Of The Marne Phoenix, AZ
    Sept. 28, 2011 6:39 p.m.

As per Vertias Aequitas "Maybe Utah should beat a BCS AQ team before they start shopping for Bowls." You're so right Veritas, beating up on hapless BYU will not impress the bowl committees unless it is the Toilet Bowl as Montana State gave the Utes a better game by far than the Y; pray tell what bowl is BYU possibly going to this year if they can get by mighty Idaho and Idaho State?

  • Mike Johnson Stafford, VA
    Sept. 28, 2011 6:51 p.m.

While I agree that we should wait until after some more Pac 12 games an see how they turn out, but USC did not thump Utah. The game went down to the wire, decided by a blocked field run back for a touchdown as time expired.

It should also be noted that these are media outlets making these predictions. Utah fans, while reveling in the respect, are also for the most part calling for taking each game at a time and not getting ahead of ourselves the way so many BYU fans do before each season each year.

as a huge UTE fan ...I have to say that I agree too many utah fans thinking just because we're in the pac 12 means we're going to the rose bowl....uh hang on, one game at a time. And these teams the utes are playing are no cupcakes relax utah fans don't get ahead of ourself!....go utes!

Point is BYU has beat a BCS AQ team. Utah has not.

Dude, that is not an "As per Vertias Aequitas", that is a stone cold fact.

So why is SoCalUtahFan | 5:40 p.m. predicting a Rosebowl?

Why are any Utah fans predicting any Bowl?

Why not let it play out?

I thought Utah's mantra was "one game at a time".

Rockofthe Marne, even you should be able to grasp the concept without going on a rant about the "Toilet Bowl".

Why are fact so difficult for Utah fans?

Maybe at the bowling alley on south state street....Ritz Classic Lanes.

I'll give them the benefit of the Vegas Bowl, that is if they win the required number of games to be eligible.

  • D'Anconia Providence, UT
    Sept. 28, 2011 10:00 p.m.

    Veritas Aequitas,

Most Utah fans would agree that it is a lot premature to start talking about which bowl game, if any, Utah will go to. I don't understand why DN would even bring it up. They must need to mix in a Utah article between Big XII speculation pieces. Who knows.

It is also true that Utah has no quality wins to this point. Normally I'd count beating BYU in Provo by 44 points as a quality win but let's be honest, BYU is terrible this year.

You go ahead and believe Ole Miss was a great win for your team if that makes you feel better. That might be the only bright spot on your entire season. Good luck Friday. I think your team is going to need a lot of it (like they did last Friday night).

    Go Utes!

Haha! I have to laugh at all those 44-pt losers from the Sept. 17th Holy War, with twice as many dents in their W/L column as the winners of 7 of the last 10, who are predicting the Utes not making it to the postseason. We may not know where we're going Bowling - either now OR after our game vs. Washington - but we DO know it won't be in Ft. Worth.

BYU has also lost to more BCS AQ teams than Utah.

    BYU: 1-2 (technically 0-3)
    Utah: 0-1

Glad to see you're still considering a lifeless 4th quarter comeback (much like Utah did to BYU last year) over a the worst team in the SEC a quality win.
