I hope they really have some good information to justify all of the money and
man power that has been spent the last few weeks on this. I would like to hear
something solid about what was actually found or taken from the Powells.
Josh is really quiet right now?
I agree that this has to be expensive, but if the investigation succeeds it will
be great in the interest of justice. It has also been educational for anyone
interested in up-to-date methods. I'm in favor of commending the persistence and
determination of the probing team, including the canine detectives.
Sounds to me like they're searching for a needle in a haystack.
I have a problem with the officer's 50/50 comment. He stated that there was a
50/50 chance that they had found Susan's remains. Then they said that since it
was or was not Susan's remains, that it was a 50/50 chance. They clearly do not
understand odds and statistics. Say there is a lump in my back
yard. Since the lump may or may not be a burried body there is a 50/50 chance
that it could be Susan's remains? No. To say that there is a 50/50 chance you
would need other evidence that led you to my back yard. Something that gave you
a good idea that there would be a lump in my backyard. Perhaps a witness that
thought they saw something strange going on at my house, or maybe they found a
google earth search on a person of interest's computer showing my backyard. Or
maybe they have mud from a person of interest's car that only exists in my
backyard. Without some specific evidence the 50/50 statement is pretty lame.I am very curious as to why the investigators want to generate all of
Is this an election year for someone on the police force in West Valley?
Would they be able to get DNA off the burned wood?
I am surprised and disappointed that so many of you doubt the motives and
information coming from the Police. Surely, this shows that they are leaving no
stone unturned in their search for this young mother. Why should they give out
information that is integral to their case just to keep the morbidly curious
involved? These Officers are obviously keen to find Mrs Powell's
remains, and bring to justice those responsible for her disappearance. Whether
the percetages are 50/50 or 70/30 is irrelevat. They are surely saying that
there is a possibility that the remains may be those of Mrs powell, but they
cannot be sure. Would you rather they say that they are sure when they are not?
Leave the experts to do their job, and don't attempt to undermine them. The
search for this lady is literally like looking for a "Needle in a
For anyone who is complaining about the cost involved, would you still be
griping if it were one of your family members who were missing? I would hope
MoJules, hmmm I think that when a person is cremated there is no DNA left. Still
if the dogs found it there must be something there.
While I recognize the expense is great, one would have to question why we would
not want to spend the time and effort. The thoughts of giving up on the search
would be devastating for the family, but it would also open the doors for other
criminal activity. If a criminal knows that money is tight and an
investigation won't be persued until proper closure is obtained, their warped
minds would feel even more empowered in realizing they have a very good chance
of "getting away with it". Knowing that they will
eventually be caught, probably keeps more people out of trouble than we realize.
According to Plato - people realize "the badness of being harmed or
wronged outweighs the goodness of harming others." In other words, even
though we may be able to make things better for ourselves by "getting rid
of" someone, the punishment for doing that is far worse than having to put
up with that person. I believe every human mind understands this. Too many
just try to get away with things and the more we allow themto, the more
violent they will become.
The best way to defer costs of such an exhaustive search is to have those who
are worried donate to the West Valley Police. If you really care then help.
Otherwise stop complaining. They will do their best, this is not a one hour CSI
show. Not everything is resolved, nore is every little loose end tied up. This
is real life, where the unthinkable happens to a lovely young lady and her
The economy is bad and we as tax payers are paying for this search. I didnt say
that I want them to stop. I said that i would like to hear something solid. The
Utah west desert is very big and there is a 30 mile stretch between the campsite
and Topaz so do we search all 30 miles? Is there even any evedince showing he
was actually camping in that area? And yes cost is an issue unless your the
Police = Keystone Cops
The ineptitude of the WVC police is astounding. The announce and
hold a press conference in eastern Nevada to declare...that they have no
information. And the search yields nothing. Then they say they found
human remains in a shallow grave near Topaz Mountain and that there's a 50-50
chance those remains are Susan Powell's. Then the story changed to there being
evidence of human remains. Then finally charcoal. Wow. I guess that's why they
gave it 50-50 chance. They obviously don't know what they're doing
and are thrilled to cry "wolf" and see the media/public reaction. The
problem is they've cried "wolf" too many times. They make
Barney Fife look like a genius.
I believe everything the police have done is what they are supposed to be doing,
they are doing what is expected. I do not read any former policemen on this post
that are complaining about this process. How do we know they found nothing in
Nevada, I hope all of you realize that the police will not release all the info
they have, if they did then the perpetrator of this crime will know what is
going on, the less they know the better. So have faith that this is a
slow process that might take a while longer
It's either the police who are quickly jumping to conclusions, or it is the
media who is reporting it, that is jumping to conclusions based on little bits
This is all posturing by the police department. If they make a big media deal
about all of this and happen to be close then the guilty one might panic and
make a silly move. I'm sure they have evidence of a certain type of dirt from
the Powell residence and they are digging in these areas, if the police happen
to be close, then Josh migh do something stupid and there is no question they
are watching him close.
@ SignatureHome and MapleDonI am glad we have free speech rights in
this country----that makes it possible for you to say rather foolish
things about the investigation. The police are doing everything in their power
to solve this case in spite of what you and other ill-informed people say. I
thank them for that. I hope they continue to fully investigate this case until
it is solved. Please remember that the police do not tell you everything they
are finding---we don't know the entire scope of this case.
