I really miss Pres. Hinckley.Don't get me wrong. I love Pres.
Monson and declare him to be a mighty prophet of God. But I sure did love Pres.
Hinckley.Till we meet again....
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says that after a decade of war with al-Qaida the
potential for another devastating terrorist assault "remains real."
The Pentagon chief spoke Tuesday at ground zero of the Sept. 11 attacks on the
World Trade Center, following a somber walk through the National September 11
Memorial park and museum with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Panetta told reporters
that Americans must remain vigilant against the threat of another successful
al-Qaida attack. "The potential for that kind of attack remains
real," he said from the 10th floor of 7 World Trade Center, the first
completed office tower at the site where hijacked commercial airliners were
flown into the Twin Towers, killing more than 2,700 people.
The messages of inspiration then remain timely now. We must look to the Savior
for our peace and for our example. We must listen to the living prophets and
then add to that our own personal inspiration as to how best to follow the
course they present to us. I find it interesting that the counsel
remains the same: Be diligent; be faithful; follow the commandments; continually
repent and improve ourselves; treat everyone as the Savior would, get out of
debt; serve; and so forth. While the world around us screams in our
ears, hopefully we can effectively focus on the still small voice instead.
I am glad that we have the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints to give us the counsel over the last 10 years. We know these are
perlious times, but with the help of the Savior we can be calm and see through
I am grateful that on the day these terrible events unfolded, I was at BYU and
attending a New Testament class. We finished learning about the Savior's
teachings from our professor, then filed out to greet a somber, yet beautiful
morning. I made my way to the women's apparel section of the BYU Bookstore and
sat on the floor below the TV just in time to see the second plane bank sharply
and smash into the second WTC tower. The whole campus was filled with awe and
sadness, and never had we longed to hear the firm and comforting words of our
Prophet and his counselors with more fervor. It was as though Heavenly Father
Himself had spoken through the smoke and rubble and chaos, "Peace; Be still
and know that I am God."
These statements also serve as reminders of what has occurred since 9/11. There
have been significant changes in the world since the tragic events surrounding
9/11 - political upheaval, economic uncertainty, state vs. church divisiveness,
etc. - all of which seem to be described in the Book of Mormon.
