Can't wait to get the season started. This exposure is going to be
great for the school.First Jimmermania swept the nation.Cougar football is next!Go Cougars!
This is a great write-up. Thanks Mr. Harmon! I love the idea of having control
over our own distribution. Everything is geared towards building the BYU brand,
rather than a conference's brand. This will pay HUGE dividends in the future.
BYU has their priorities straight - Exposure is everything!
Independence is fascinating. I wonder how things would go if the Big 12 comes
Sounds super: Except there is still no HD feed of BYUtv on Directtv or Dish as
far as I can tell.BYUtv you need to do what ever it takes to get the
HD feeds on those satellite systems.Nothing worse than watching
BYUtv sporting events in SD on a HD set. If there is anything we can
do; please let us know. I have contacted Directtv on several occasions
requesting the HD feed; but it is not even on their future list of HD
upgrades.Lets get this done. In some ways it feels like we are
starting all over again; when we had no MTN on satellite.
Very interesting piece, being involved in the politics and finance of higher
education, I had wondered about this very thing. Very timely piece.
@rjtolmanIt shouldn't be an issue for you since you live in Utah and
BYUtv's over the air signal is in HD. Just unplug your dish during the game and
get some rabbit ears. Plus there is only one football game scheduled for BYUtv
anyway, 10 of them are on ESPN which is all HD feeds.More of a
concern would be once basketball season begins as there will probably be quite a
few BYU, and WCC, games on BYUtv. But once again since you live in Utah it is a
very easy fix.
dont make much matter to me me rather they get it or not it wont be watched in
my home. Im not a BYU fan. and just knowing I can see the Jazz play and not
have to see jimmer made my day
BYUtv has changed a lot in the last few years, My formerly inactive aunt who
came into activity because of the many church oriented programs on KBYU now
tells me to watch the Catholic channel if I need good religious programming. Now that sewing, cooking, painting , exercise, sports etc. have moved to
the forefront while uplifting religious programs are relegated to the 3 am slot
it would be wonderful if the LDS Church had a channel of their own where the
religious programming once offered on KBYU was available.
Good article, probably the most comprehensive on the BYU channel/independance
goals to date. But just don't see the ultimate goal in sports, especially for
BYU fans the ability to materialize in their independance. Hidden in a sentence
within this article is the crux "...BYU doesn't release that kind of
information, and the product is ultimately built for exposure, not making
money." The BYU sports fan, especially football minded, will ultimately be
disappointed in the "exposure" goal because its not for
"football" or sports exposure. BYU fans will have great access to
veiwing their teams but it will only be BYU fans accessing and that isn't what
will move BYU back into any national level debate again.

Brian in AK makes some good points. I was under the impression BYUtv was a
religious channel.Guess not.
So true Brian, I used to turn to BYUtv whenever I wanted a little spiritual
pick-me-up, but now they have way too many self help type shows that you
mentioned. On the HD issue, DirecTV told me that whenever BYUtv
requests to be in HD, it will be. Maybe its a money issue so they're waiting til
the season starts to pay a little less or something..?
MiPBYUtv was created to serve the mission of the LDS church, which
is, to spread the word. BYU sports are seen as a conduit for
increasing exposure for BYU and, ultimately, the church that sponsors BYU.
To Desert Dweller. Your blunt honesty is refreshing.Good article
Dick. The fundraising and financing of BYU Football is huge. It is on the big
stage and takes a lot of money to make a big splash. I am glad to be able to
watch on TV. I really don't care if it is on ESPN or BYUTV or whatever. I don't
care if it is in HD or SD or or any other D. I am simply glad to watch. Go Cougars
TrueBlue, BYU would be the obvious choice for the Big-12 if they can get over
any no-Sunday clause and decide they want to expand, and in lieu of TCU going to
the Big East. And the Big-12 would be a better fit for BYU's other sports than
the WCC. We'll see.BlueCoug, then how do we explain the Food Nanny?
Brian in AKI suppose you have internet. The church operates the

spot on the BYU Football Schedule.Great.It would be a
whole different matter if the Cougars had to "deal", with Texas, on a
daily basis, as a member, of the Texas conference.Just ask Nebraska,
Colorado, Missouri, and Texas A&M.
Deseret Dwellerpssst -- we all know you'll be watching, though. You
won't be able to keep away, just like you couldn't keep away from this article!
Pass the popcorn to Chris B and Hedgehog.
@RationalNothing sweeter than watching the Cougars get whipped...You know... It's Blocked.... It's Blocked... Utes Win...
Utes Win... Utes Win...Aahhhhh... nothin' sweeter.
HAHAHAHAHA! That is the funniest headline I've read this year. Of course it will
be a money maker, regardless..........OH my goodness?
@little howieCherish your little victory as it will pale in
significance to the beatdown you'll get in LES in 4 weeks. You're
accustomed to beat downs so BYU will make it either 2 in a row or possibly 4 in
row by the 17th.Can't wait to bring the braggin's rights home and to
shut U guys down once and for all. It will be sweet and last all year long.
@sammygUnder Brother Mendenhall BYU is 2 - 1 against Utah at LES.In those two victories the winning margin averaged less than a TD.Keep dreaming sammyg, my friend... Bronco doesn't know how to administer
a beatdown of Utah... plain and simple. How and while you're dreaming
maybe that call from the Big12 will come.
Hahaha... Desnews blocked my comments for excessive caps. (eyeroll). I'll
tryagain:I get byutv on my Roku. Love it!
It's fine that they say they want get more exposure in North and South
America. But for the past few months, wheneverI log in to BYUtv to watch
on-line live TV, I am denied access, becauseI am identified as not being
in the United States. Before then,I could watch live BYUtv online
anytime. This seems like a step backwards instead of forwards in
terms of exposure. Are other people denied access like me? If there are,
exposure is not whatis happening.vp
"There are reasons ($,$,$) why Nebraska and Colorado (gone) as well as
Missouri and Texas A&M are desperately looking to leave the Big 1 and Little
9."The difference is that BYU will actually get money in the
Big 12, because if A&M leaves they will be saving the conference and adding
a lot of financial value. Unlike Utah who accepted a laughable deal where they
won't be a full member of the PAC for another four years.
@rjtolman, I know what's worse than watching BYUtv in SD...watching the mtn at
all. I could hardly see anything in their game broadcasts. As for
the money, that will take care of itself. I'd dare say that there are a lot of
deep-pocketed LDS folks who would gladly pony up to keep the exposure BYUtv
currently has. This is great for the Church, the University, and the World!
And to throw sports onto it now just sweetens the pot! I'd bet that TLN is
pretty jealous of where BYUtv is today and will be watching it all very closely
to see what works and what doesn't.
It's doesn't matter that Utah is on KJZZ cause the only game ute fans watch all
year will be on ESPN thanks to the Cougs
@RationalNothing sweeter than watching the Cougars get whipped...You know... It's Blocked.... It's Blocked... Utes Win...
Utes Win... Utes Win...Aahhhhh... nothin' sweeter. Hurry, someone shake him, he's having another wild-eyed dream, dreamer.
Big 12 members are already upset with Texas about their TV deal. What makes
people think BYU will be welcome there with their own TV deal?

Thanks for the comments about HD programming. I was wondering why there wasnt
an HD channel when HD was highlighted and promised as being a big benefit of
BYUtv. With BYU hype you must check the fine print to know what will actually
be the case. Lets also hope the overall programming at BYU tv can
Howard S. In my opinion it was Robert Anae that didn't know how to
give the Utes a beat-down. In 2006, 2009 and last year he took his foot off the
gas when things were smoking offensively. I give Kyle all kinds of credit
because when his team is getting beat he (usually) finds a way to turn the ship
around. Anae quit pushing and let the Utes back into those games. It's my opinion, do with it as you choose.
@JonnyDangerI find it amusing that Cougar fans don't realize that
Anae's play calling last year was designed to protect a green QB both physically
and mentally. When Doman's play calling exposes St. Jake (both
physically and mentally) we'll see how he reacts to his first blindside smash
from a blitzing DB.Brandon Doman = Gary Crowton...Good
luck with that...
Those Cougs think of everything.
Brandon Doman = Gary Crowton?Howard, that has to be be the most
uninformed statement of opinion I have every read. Other than the fact that
Doman quarterbacked Crowton's only successful team, what else do they have in
common? Crowton was attempting to be a head coach, Doman is hired as an
offensive coordinator. Well, hold on, Crowton might be good to
compare Doman to, as an offensive coordinator, since Crowton was OC for a
national campion (LSU, 2008) and has held that position for some impressive
programs: Oregon, LSU and Maryland. We don't need Doman to be national
championship caliber this year, just competent. The players will have to do the

Howard S.You were just served, schooled and beat down by Osgrath. You should stop now.
@OwlOfAmericaYou may want to catch up to speed in your reading. The broadcasting of High School games on the TLN was axed by the NCAA
and the Big 12 over a week ago. It was the only none revenue splitting issue of
merit that A&M had...It's gone now. A&M hasn't got a leg to stand on
that isn't a sour grapes complaint over Revenue Sharing. Texas will have to
eventually be forced to accept that they are going to have to change that
standing condition and start some type of trade off split with the the other Big
12 teams...or run the risk of them and not A&M now becoming the cause for a
possible implosion. The Big 12 needs to become proactive by starting an
expansion move with BYU, TCU and Boise State and Texas needs to realize that
they need to be a little more cooperative. At least in the Big 12 Texas will
retain a lot more of thier percieved advantages...where as in the PAC more than
likely they wouldn't and lose a substantial amount.
@Howard S.I find it amusing that utey's actully believe that Anae's
play calling was designed to protect a green quarterback both physically and
mentally.Doman proved otherwise...because BYU's O line was easily capable
of protecting Heaps who is a deep pocket shotgun throwing quarterback now
adjusting to a Pro set behind the Center that will focus a lot more on the
blocking of it's running backs in par with thier running and catching skills .
Anae didn't have a knowledgable working ability to understand a more
comprehensive passing schematic. Running the ball and using a limited passing
shematic that had become well known by every team in the MWC became his
downfall. He underutilized his "green quarterback" who is much more
efficient when he's allowed to stretch and open up the field...something that
Anae wasn't confident in doing. His gambling...(deferred call by Bronco or
not)... and not going for the easy chip shot field goal in the early minutes of
the 3rd quarter that would have put BYU ahead by 9 and atempting to convert a
risky 4th and inches was the cost of the game. The blocked field goal would
have been of no consequence otherwise.
It appears Where's Stockton and other BYU loyalists don't get it.If Big 12
members have an issue with a Texas TV contract. It won't be any different for
BYU and their ESPN deal. Will BYU give up it's deal or share revenue with other
@NightOwlYou've presented a false choice.BYU would only
join the Big 12 if they could keep their long aspired to freedoms and existing
contracts. As Texas has done. Keep in mind the Big 12 is a different
animal than the typical Conference construct, which is more Socialistic in
nature. For Texas and Oklahmona to stay on board last summer, they
are receiving much more TV revenue than is Kansas St, Iowa St. etc. As they
should, they are the Brand Names with the most appeal. Thus, the
Longhorn Network. Oklahoma is thinking of their own network now. Kansas St. and
Missouri have just announced their own on-line networks. This new
model and thinking outside of the box, even has Notre Dame as a possibility to
join such a Conference. This is a new wave not going away. The USC's,
Oregons, Ohio State's etc. are all on board with the Old Conference Model.
However, USC even now, is thinking of ways of Capitalizing on their Brand,
outside the new agreements.Something wrong with Legacy and Brand
name schools sharing 100% of their spoils with Non-Producing Lesser Name
Schools. It's a lesson in Free Market Capitalism vs. Socialism.

A couple of things regarding broadcasting...#1 BYUtv is NOT KBYU.
For those who want KBYU programming of old, or whatever... it's like you are
telling ESPN you miss the Ed Sullivan show they used to broadcast. They are not
the same. KBYU, and over the air PBS affiliate, broadcasting primarily PBS
programming. BYUtv is something COMPLETELY different with not very much in
common when it comes to what is on the air.#2 Regarding HD...
weather or not BYUtv is broadcast in HD is not up to BYUtv or even good old Dick
Harmon. It is up to the "carrier." BYUtv PROVIDES it signal to
carriers in HD... but if DISH or Direct TV or your cable company doesn't put it
on THEIR HD allocated channels, that is the carriers decision, not BYUtv's. In closing, I am Mad BYUtv promised me HD quality and isn't delivering,
and I sure think it's a mistake to bump Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street off BYUtv
for BYU Sports! hahahahahaha!
Earn money the old fashioned way. Sell commercials.
@HootieYou obviously failed to read my entire comment before coming
back with a meaningless backhand that totally misses the point of the
discussion. The main issue of the complaints against the TLN was the possible
recruiting ramifications if Texas was allowed to broadcast High School games.
The NCAA and the Big 12 swiftly axed that thereby eliminating the need to
further adress that as the main issue...which leaves the issue of adressing the
revenue sharing as the new primary complaint. So tell me Hootie what part of...
"Texas will have to be eventually forced to accept that they are going to
have to change that standing condition and start some type of trade off split
with the other Big 12 teams...or run the risk that now they and not A&M now

Wouldn't it be likely that if I would mentaion that Texas would have to
eventually see and understand the need to back down and actually start making
concessions of sharing more Television money...and that BYU would also have to
face that same issue.. It amazes me that you somehow missed that.
BYU?U GradAre you kidding me Dick Harmon doesn't have the ability to get
Direct and Dish to start sending everything in HD? Come on Man... It doesn't
matter what BYUtv or anyone does if you can't see the numbers on their jerseys
