With the Summer sport's doldrums, I get excited about even a short article like
this. Jimmer and Jacks are irreplacable, but we'll still have a solid team.
Carlino, Harrison, Winder, Abouo, Rogers, Hartsock, Collinsworth and
Davies will challenge the Zags for the crown. It's probably not a 30 win
season, but 25+ is very realistic. And depending on the draw, they could make
some noise at the dance.
I don't doubt that Coach Rose will have this team ready to win 25+ games this
season.Sans Jimmer/Jackson, BYU's team will still have a great
offense if they do a run-n-gun. There are enough scorers who can make it work,
although it might not look so smooth at first with so many new faces. It's BYU's defense that's been underrated over the years. They play very good
team defense, and that should continue. It's a staple of Rose's coaching
style. With the help the bigs will receive with the new assitant
coach, could be a very good team up front. This is going to be such a
beautiful year in BYU sports!
BYU doesn't have a chance.Remember how Utah dropped off after Van
Horn went to the NBA?
I think this BYU basketball team will be pretty good, they won't have Jimmer but
they will have a lot of talent and will play more of a team game, not so much
One on five. I hope Davies becomes the leading scorer, Hartsock should be solid,
Chris C. should be solid and better than last yr. Abuo should be better. The
first half of the season when Carlino can't play will be interesting , (who will
emerge at point), over all this team should be deep and talented.
I just think it will be great to watch Basketball and football, BYU style, on TV
@ute-chuteI remember that. Utah dropped off all the way to the NCAA
finals. I am guessing you're kidding.
@ ute-chute,Van Horn was no Jimmer. And lately, Utah's no BYU.Apples to apples, people.
It's very possible that Jimmer's teammates got to counting on him (and watching
him) so much that their own offensive games suffered. We'll see for
those that return next year whether they can produce without Jimmer around.Sure gonna miss him, but don't think BYU basketball will tank without
him. Rose proved he could win before Jimmer, and will do so after Jimmer.
Will Haws be playing this year?
BYU will be Ranked this year!
I'm hoping Noah can get 20 per game. He has not lived up offensively to his
shooting star averages from high school but has shown flashes of his potential.
Last year to impress folks, so let's do it Noah before a big flood drowns your
career. He has played some pretty tough interior defense and if Brandon is back
the D should be solid plus he'll get more open shots.
Hartsock's still on the team? I thought that guy graduated like 5 years ago!!
:o) Run-N-Gun or whatever, I'll be satisfied with a strong season and another
trip to the NCAA Tourney! For you WCC naysayers, that conference if better than
you give them credit for. The play is very similar to the MWC. I just wished
they played in larger venues.
BYU returns everyone besides Jimmer, Emery, and Logan. They have a couple more
solid big guys back from missions. They have Davies back as well as Collinsworth
and they have some good guards coming who should be able to run the team well. I
look for another excellent year with an NCAA berth.
utah ute 16: I think Haws is gone one more season.
Let's all hope that the WCC moves all BYU games on the road to larger venues. Y
fans will fill these small arenas to more than over-flowing. Case in point:
when I called Gonzaga I was advised they have NO general admission tickets as
all tickets are gone every year to season ticket holders. The only tickets
available are those allocated for the visiting team(s). I did not ask how many
that would be for BYU so I made sure to renew my Cougar Club membership.
BYU I love you but.... this seasons team is like the Jazz banking on CJ. There
are going to be 5 or6 great games worth watching and the rest of the season
talking about how great Jimmer was last season. There are plenty of
returning players but none of them is consistent, unless you call 8-9 ppg
Braking in two new guards will be a big challenge, without Davies this will be a
very average BYU team. I think many fans are getting overly optimistic about
next years team, having visions of Jimmer and Jackson as "senior"
guards. I think 20 to 25 wins will be a big success even with Davies, without
him this team, will have a hard time braking 20. Either way I will be watching
and hoping that they can jell early and prove me wrong.
It's really going to be interesting to see what happens when WCC schools realize
how much more in home gate receipts they can reap in games vs BYU. Whether it's
enough to make it worth renting out a larger venue for those games remains to be
seen.Very likely the games at WCC teams' homes vs BYU will each be
sold out. BYU could have a home-court advantage for WCC schools that don't have
good home showings, unless simply having BYU come to town brings out more of
their fans.Sure am looking forward to this new BYU basketball
era.I think BYU fans will be pleasantly surprised by the new
additions to the team. Rose wouldn't be thinking run-n-gun unless he had the
players to pull it off.
The whole "WCC teams might look for larger venues for BYU games" idea
is a very interesting thought. The "little gym"
schools--those with 3,500 or so seats--certainly should consider moving to a
bigger facility for the BYU game. The other side of the coin, though, would be
the loss of their home-court advantage. Say they find a 7,000 seat
arena, giving them 3,500 or so more seats. You would have to assume that most of
those extra patrons would be BYU fans. Also, BYU's "home court" at
Energy Solutions Arena just isn't the same as playing at the Marriott Center.
You would have to assume that playing "across town" wouldn't be the
same for those teams as well.Is the extra money worth the loss of a
true home game? I don't know. It will be interesting to find out how some of
those schools see it.
Can't wait for all of this to get going. Great TV coverage for both football and
basketball. It's going to be a nice long stretch of entertainment!
