$5 million is a stiff penalty but it will keep the MWC from turning into the
wac. As opposed to the Wac the MWC will retain a pretty strong nucleus. Any team
that plays the likes of Idaho, Idaho St, New Mexico St, San jose St, Utah St and
Hawaii in the same year deserve zero respect.
after bYu jobbed the MWC.... I can understand the need for rule changes.
Wow talk about "closing the barn door after the horse has bolted"!
Who's left to worry about? BSU? Not likely unless they seriously upgrade the
rest of their University outside of football. The best thing Utah,
BYU and TCU did was run away and never look back from the MWC, even if TCU has
to suffer one last year in the minors...
...How is Crabtree asking who the QB is and saying that he'll be
"100%" behind him a slight on Smith? He's asking the same question
all of us are-who is the QB going to be, as Smith is unsigned? Journalism at its
Wow. They actually renewed Craig Thompson's contract?
Pretty certain that any team that plays the likes of Idaho, Idaho St, New Mexico
St, San Jose St, Utah St and Hawaii in the same year could not care less about
being respected by a non entity worm herder. Hair Thompson has no
credibility outside of Reno.
I agree, I fail to see how Crabtree's comments are a knock on Smith. It is a
legitimate question, although all indications are that Smith will be resigned by
the 49ers. I also don't see how Smith's comments about Crabtree are at all
controversial. If you don't know why someone isn't particpating in voluntary
camps, what else are you supposed to say?
MWC a little late with that penalty. It's like they are buying an alarm system
after their house has already been stripped clean and they've moved out. There's no reason for the rest of the conference President's to not
renew Hair. It was his awful TV deal that kept giving equal money and TV access
to the have-nots of the league, while the teams who produced fell farther behind
the BCS teams they were competing with. Teams like Wyoming and New Mexico owe a
big allegiance to Hair.
I don't understand why Alex Smith is so determined to make it as a 49ers
quarterback. I suppose each year he is fooled by the hope of a new head coach
or a new offensive scheme, but after 5 years of dashed hopes? The 49ers are a
toxic organization. Move on and make your name somewhere else. Drew Brees
moved on, and did just fine. Go to Arizona or Minnesota. Get out of The Bay!
Why are we fortunate enough to read stories about Boylen, the MWC, and Urban
Meyer ad nauseum? I think we need more coverage of Crowton, Ingle, and Reid?
Why not through in Guy and Giacoletti while we're at it?
Sounds like Craig Thompson is doing his best to keep the Broncos from bolting as
soon as they discover just how horrible the MTN really is.hh - after
BYU jobbed the MWC.... I can understand the need for rule changes. The Utes were the primary contributors to the MWC breakup.
gonefishn. Wow. You must have missed all the details in trying to get a
schedule going in less than a year's time and "simply" do not
understand how a schedule is worked on projecting out 5 years and must work
within the framework of the other team's conference commitments. You are myopic
when you look at BYU's schedule focusing only on this next year. Take a look at
the schedule over the next 3-4 years before a childish comment is made. LOTR how did BYU job the MWC? Because they left to look out for their
own interests? Because the MWC treated them like a cash cow? Because the MWC is
a weak league? An Nauseum. THe Utes were not the primary contributors to the
MWC breakup. BYU and Utah both were. Utah joining the new PAC-12 and BYU had
already been working on independence before that happened. You are looking
through a glass darkly.
@CougarBlue"THe Utes were not the primary contributors to the
MWC breakup."Fiction. Complete fiction. A fairytale ending
that BYU fans have created.Until Utah took the spot in the Pac-12
that BYU had been begging for the last 3 decades, BYU had "plans" that
were way on the back burner. Utah moving got the wheels turning, just facts BYU
fans refuse to accept.Had Utah not been promoted, BYU would have
stayed right where they were, and kept making "plans" in case
something catastraphic happened, like Utah leaving them in the dust.

about the MWC?
"Any team that plays the likes of Idaho, Idaho St, New Mexico St, San jose
St, Utah St and Hawaii in the same year deserve zero respect."Wow, gonefishn. You really think that a team that beats Ole Miss, Texas, TCU,
Utah, and Oregon State all in the same year (hypothetically speaking) will
automatically get no respect because it plays those teams you mentioned? Of
course, beating any of these teams next year is yet to be seen as impressive, as
ANY of these teams (except perhaps TCU) have a possibility of having 7 or fewer
wins. Likewise, all could do rather well. We won't know until it happens. If you think that is true, then I have proof that you are wrong: Boise
State. They played those teams year in and year out and are nationally
respected. Also, I suppose that YOU could have done a better job
putting together a full independent schedule in only a few months? (considering
that schedules are usually made a couple years in advance)BYU will
do fine, whether you like it or not.
@ CourgarBlue & Willairy: While many at BYU wanted a slot in the Pac-10,
most knew they would NEVER get into that league due to being a religious school.
Tom Holmoe more than anyone knew the possibility of a Utah only invitation to
the Pac-10 when he took over in the spring of 2005, and still further that the
Big-12 could be wounded in the bloodbath of league movement this past year.
Utah fans need to get over it and more than anything it was 2 decades of
mediocrity (70s/80s) against BYU that finally propelled their administration to
do something about it. BYU blew their best chance to move into a BCS league
when the Big-12 was formed back in 1993, but then again even more than a few
Texas legislators and a Baylor alumnus governor at the time, the senior
leadership of the LDS Church wouldnt let then BYU president Rex E. Lee deal with
the Big-8 and Texas presidents that invited them feeling Utah would be hurt by
such a deal the way league structures were beginning to evolve.
If what SLC BYU Fan is saying is true, then that shoots down the Hedgehog,
Chris, and others always ragging on everything BYU. If BYU was trying to look
out for Utah's interests, then Utah turned redcoat on BYU shen they bolted the
MWC for the Pac 10. Maybe you naysayers all owe BYU and its fan a big apology.
The fact that UofU got invited to the pac (with their big media payout) and BYU
has media success before even playing a game speaks volumes to how these two
teams were undervalued in the mwc. The fact that Thompson couldn't leverage
National Assets TCU, BYU, UofU his proof that is business acumen is on par with
the conference he is now left with. In the end, everybody got what they
Just when you think the MWC could not pull another studpid stunt, they renew
Thompsons contract...now I've seen everything.
I can't imagine it was a unanimous vote. There have got to be a couple of teams
in the MWC that know there are better opportunities than the MWC.After a year or two of media obscurity, Boise State, Nevada, Fresco State and
Hawaii are going to wish they were back in the WAC.It wouldn't
surprise me if Air Force and Hawaii explore being Independent. In reality a $5
or $6 million dollar penalty is a small price to pay if a team has the
opportunity for something better.
"I can't imagine it was a unanimous vote"Kewgfantx,Yes. And you can assume the thompson will do everything in his power to
insure that MWC teams never play the kewgs ever again.
Thompson with his not "bolting penalty" will assure the MWC that they
retain the overall mediocre schools they've signed. And things for
the MWC will remain the same for years to come; i.e., mediocrity, low revenues,
no recognition, no fan interest. The "bolting penalty" will
prove of no effect because the MWC will run out of revenue first and declare
bankruptcy. But then Thompson can always tell himself that it was
Utah, BYU, and TCU that did him in.But, Thompson, if a cookie
company goes bankrupt, it's not the consumers' fault for not buying cookies,
it's the company's fault for making cookies that don't taste good.
With the large sums of money being paid for new TV contracts, how can the MWC
not find a new deal big enough to buy their way out of that horrible contract
with The Mountain? I am scratching my head as to how Boise State looked at
limited television exposure and still decided to join the MWC.
hedgehog | 7:53 a.m."Yes. And you can assume the thompson will do
everything in his power to insure that MWC teams never play the kewgs ever
again."Try as he may, he will not succeed. BYU already has 9
games scheduled with Hawaii through 2020 on the first Saturday of December and 4
games scheduled with Boise State (2012 - 2015). I expect the Boise State
matchup to continue since they will be looking for better competition than the
MWC has to offer. Give it a year or two, and you will see Air Force
back on the schedule periodically. But I don't think you'll ever see BYU play
Nevada or Fresno State after they stabbed the Cougs in the back.BYU's annual schedule will likely look like:MWC: 2 teamsWAC: 1 or
2 teamspac: 1 or 2 teamsBig12: 1 teamBig 10: 1 teamACC:
1 teamBig East: 1 teamSEC: 1 teamIndependents: 1 or 2 teams
Hopefully after July 1 we won't have to see much more press about the MWC in our
local media. It was a good thing at first, but I don't understand giving Craig
Thompson a contract extension when he is largely responsible for the exodus of
the best teams. Had the TV deal not turned out so bad, BYU, Utah and TCU would
likely still be part of the conference and the conference would almost certainly
be headed for BCS status. It seems like they are rewarding him for his band aid
job of saving the conference, when it was his own fault they were put in that
position to begin with. Good bye MWC!!
Hey Hedgehog,You're so funny! You ought to see if you can
get on Jay Leno!Yeah, that'd work.
hedgehog | 7:53 a.m. June 9, 2011 Ann Arbor, MI "Yes. And you
can assume the thompson will do everything in his power to insure that MWC teams
never play the kewgs ever again."Also BYU is playing TCU this
year, and they are still in the MWC.
Haven't seen any reports of this in any UT papers, but ESPN radio here announced
that the MWC is set to have provisional entrance into the BCS in 2012-2013. A 2
year deal that will determine possible permanent entrance.Maybe both
teams jumped the gun a little.
This is only what could happen in the event of a Big-12 invitation for BYU.Hypothetical 2013 BYU Schedule:8/31: Georgia Tech (moved up from 10/12

@ SLC BYU Fan | 4:03 p.m. June 9, 2011 Salt Lake City, UT I'm
confused again. I thought we were all so excited about Independance so why
bother with any Big 12 talk?
@Mildred in Fillmore: Only those who; 1: Think independence will really work
over the long term for BYU when in fact it is more risky than many realize, 2:
Those who continue to drink the kool-Aid that BYU will never be allowed either
by their (LDS Church) leaders or the leaders of other leagues to be invited due
to the No Sunday Play issues. When you look at the contracts coming due
and who controls them and all the stipulations and escape clauses surrounding
joining a BCS-AQ league for BYU in these deals, you see the word INTERIM written
all over this independence gig. Scheduling a football independent is a bigger
pain than most realize and WAC or Sun Belt dregs from mid-October to the end of
the season are more likely.
