How to out-recruit Utah 101:Coach: "Son, your first game at BYU

Independence versus MWC will improve the talent that wants to come to BYU.National TV coverage will improve the talent that wants to come to BYU.
(Just ask Boise State what ESPN has done for their program the past 5+
years.)Knowing the players will play teams like Texas, Notre Dame,
West Virginia, Ole Miss, Hawaii, Utah, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, Boise State
(and the list goes on and on) will improve the talent that wants to come to
BYU.Enthusiastic, skilled coaches like Bronco, Doman Cahoon, and
DuPaix will improve the talent that wants to come to BYU.The future
is very bright! I'm looking forward to seeing the list of commits in the coming
weeks. Go Cougs!
I have always thought BYU is the most difficult place to create and sustain a
successful program in the nation. As this article highlights, the talent pool is
truly limited - kids who can play at this level and who can and want to live the
standards. Even many who are in that limited pool choose Utah or other BCS
programs restricting the pool further. Then a good percentage will leave for two
years impacting their athleticism and making juggling the roster a full-time job
for someone. My point is, I have always thought that as a regular
top-25 program BYU greatly overachieves. No other coach in the country would
want the built-in challenges that exist at BYU. And yet they are highly
successful season after season.
"Enthusiastic, skilled coaches like Bronco, Doman Cahoon, and DuPaix will
improve the talent that wants to come to BYU."Cougfan,You do realize that a cardboard box could be in charge of recruiting and the
"talent" universe will always be the same. The number of elite Mormon
athletes going to "other" Universities can be counted on one hand....
and trust me, they know about bYu and bYu knows aout them.No elite
non Mormon will every go to bYu.
Hedgehog - I think there are several elite Mormon athletes at your U actually.
Maybe you don't rate the talent at the U as high as I do?But you are
correct in that the talent pool for BYU is very specific and narrow. Making
BYU's success even that more impressive.
Idaho kewg,My point is that nothing changes... recuiting
opportunities are exactly the same at the Y and will never improve (or
decline). It is what it is.Utah on the other hand has
Glad to have DuPaix recruiting.
@hh,Maybe your definition of elite is different than mine, but two
quick names that come to mind as elite non-Mormon athletes at BYU are Josh
Quezada and Cody Hoffman. There are many others that fall into this category as
well, but those two had such amazing Freshman campaigns I didn't figure you
could argue with those. Don't worry, you'll see a lot of them on Sept. 17.BTW, Ty Detmer was not a Mormon when he came to BYU either.
"Utah on the other hand has unlimited possibilities."And
yet they do so little with it.
Glad DuPaix is aboard. Need to get the best recruits possible at the Y. There
have been some great non-LDS players that have come to the Y. I was attending
school there when Cosic was playing. Later we got McMahon. We will occasionally
land a few elite players but realistically with the state of college recruiting
(under the table stuff we shouldn't do) we will have to build our teams from 2
and 3 star recruits. Great coaching and two-year missions should be enough to
keep us in the top 25 in both FB and BB all the way to the end of the world.
CougfanTX,Josh Quezada and Cody Hoffman are not elite talent. Had
Heaps not been mormon, and came to Byu, then that would be considered Elite
Talent. Those are middle of the pack guys, that most top 25 programs have a
supply of, sitting on the bench, behind that Elite Talent. Dont get me wrong,
they are both good players, but your definition of Elite Talent is different
than everyone elses outside the Byu family, fans, and program. Florida, Odio St,
USC, OU, Texas etc. would not consider either of those 2 players as elite
talent. They may try to recruit them, even the big name schools need backups and
pratice squad players. Before you say it, I know, I know, the Utes dont get
these types of players either. At least not yet anyway.

hedgehog"No elite non Mormon will every go to bYu."Ty Detmer, Jim McMahan ....Do you EVER get tired of always being
completely wrong?! I guess not.
No elite non-Mormon will ever go to BYU?Perhaps not, but BYU is a
ridiculously well coached team. Look at the teams fielded under Coach
Mendenhalls tenure. Star players like Brian Kehl, Johnny Harline, Curtis Brown,
Max Hall, Cameron Jensen, and Dennis Pitta were average at best
"talent" by the leagues definition. Now BYU is getting more
"talented" players like Cody Hoffman and Joshua Quezada who, I agree,
are not "elite" players, but are still more "talented" than
what BYU has fielded in year's past. The other difference is that the roster is
becoming full of these players. It is not just the starters. So Mendenhall has a
better coaching staff, better talent, and therefore a better chance to contend
for championships. There may not be tons of athletes on BYUs squad, but this is
hands down the most talent that Mendenhall, and perhaps BYU, has ever had on
their team top to bottom. BYU is well coached enough that they don't need elite
talent to have a chance to beat elite teams. Look at what they've done without
it! Let alone what they can do with more. They aren't even close to their
To Papa Smurf Ute:We can't afford the players that Florida, Ohio St,
USC, OU, Texas etc. recruit, so that really doesn't apply to the discussion.
Just keep in mind that Hoffman and Quezada were true freshmen last year. You
will see that they are 'elite' before their careers are over.
Papa Smurf UTE | 10:05 a.m. June 2, 2011 Herriman, UT CougfanTX,
Josh Quezada and Cody Hoffman are not elite talent.Oh, I get it.
You rely on the rating agencies to determine if players are elite talent by how
many stars they get. The rating agencies get as many wrong as they get
right.I rely on the players performance on the field. If you missed
Quezada and Hoffman last year, I think you'll agree with me by the end of this
season that both are elite talent. To call them practice players shows that you
have no idea how talented they are.
Well now that there's a lexus dealership in ut county, we could just be like the
other BCS schools and give cars to star athletes. Talk about a great recruiting
tool. I don't think tatoo parlors in ut county are that popular at the moment.
Cougar_Independence,I've got to hand it to BYU fans like you who can
take BYU's uncertain football future with no chance for a real bowl game to play
for, and make it sound better than Utah's guaranteed opportunity to play in the
Rose Bowl, or even for the BCS national title. And as far as your
hoping and praying that the Utes become a "doormat" as you say, at
least people will be noticing them, which is more than one can say about BYU.
@westcoast1So if utah now has a "guaranteed" opportunity
to play for a national title simply by being in the pac10 how come USC, you've
heard of them you know USC, was denied that opportunity a few years ago despite
a #2 ranking? If USC can be denied then what in the world makes you think utah
has some sort of guaranty?
"And as far as your hoping and praying that the Utes become a
"doormat" as you say, at least people will be noticing them, which is
more than one can say about BYU."If people didn't notice BYU,
why did ESPN bother to make an 8-year deal with them? And why are all these big
name programs lining up to play BYU?
Everyone comes on these stories and posts the most ridiculous things I have ever
heard. I graduated from USU, have always been a BYU fan and love being able to
root for the Utes. I think we have some great teams in the state of Utah and
wish we didn't have so many HATERS of these universities. Just root for your
favorite teams and leave the hate off these posts. I hate reading it every day.
WestCoast1Sorry to be the one to break the news to you, but Utah has
absolutely no guarantee of EVER playing in the Rose Bowl nor for a National
Championship. No team does!
BYU is hands down the most unique Division 1 program in the country. It is
truly a one of a kind, with the honor code and the standards that are expected.
This certainly is a hinderance in recruiting many blue-chip 5 star
athletes. But that is not to say that there are not athletes out there that want
to uphold the same standards and honor code. Considering the recruiting
limitations, BYU is doing pretty good with what they pull in. There
is very little for recruits not to like in BYU at this point. Top of the line
facilities, excellent football tradition, beautiful campus, every game on nat'l
TV, games against elite opponents all over the country. Oh, and
another BYU game is set to be broadcasted nationally on ESPN.BYU @
Ole Miss -09/3 3:45pm ESPNThat gives BYU a running total of SIX
games on ESPN next season. WIth likely one more coming against OSU and maybe
another @Hawaii.It just keeps getting better.
Why are Ute's fans talking smack? Did they forget how BSU punched them in the
face and the Ute's quit like little.. The Ute's are falling faster than Ohio St.
No one cares about the Ute's outside little SC valley, nobody. Why
is BYU out recruiting the Ute's if they have the "NON-LDS" problem?
Also, BYU recruits a lot of kids before their senior year, which means they are
not rated yet. Have you noticed that BYU win 75% of the head-to-head recruiting
battles with the Utes? The Ute'y beat BYU by 1 point at home with a
bunch of backups (injuries) and freshman. On Sept 17 the Ute's will lose by 20
to BYU and end the season only 5-7. Did I mention how bad BSU kick
your butt and made you quit and cry like.......... How about that Ute
Basketball team!! They are in the PAC12, WOW!
Hedgie: "Unlimited possibilities" at the U? The same can
be said for your basketball team. How's that one working out for you?
I've got a reliable source that is telling me that Troy Hinds, Chase Hanse, and
Brandon Fanaika are taking their talents to Provo. You read it here first.
For the very first time I am going to mostly agree with Hedgie. BYU almost
certainly will never compete for truly elite non-Mormon talent, at least not on
a regular basis. While they may get a bunch of good ones, especially going
forward, the truly elite players that are not LDS will typically choose to play
elsewhere. (Notice I said "typically" because there may be one here
and there that wants the kind of atmosphere that BYU offers.) And I believe that
the Utes will also struggle to get elite players. For those elite recruits that
live outside of Utah, why would they choose Utah if they can also go to Texas,
Oklahoma, Stanford, Florida or Alabama?BYU is unique and is
recognized for this across the country. Because of this they stand out. There is
nothing that makes Utah stand out from any other state school. Sure, they went
to two BCS bowls. But that is in the past. Who really believes they will do as
well going forward now that they are in the PAC 10.2? Only Utes. And probably
not many of them believe it.
Hedgie... don't you ever get tired of sticking your foot in your mouth...Utah's
potential is limited...because it's Utah. What you will be getting are
scraps...but you're accustomed to that...getting what's left over. and then
going and sitting quietly in the corner. This time instead of BCS scraps it
will be after what Cal., Stanford, the Washington, Arizona and Oregon schools
pick though and don't take. If you're lucky you might run neck and neck with
Colorado...but don't give us this unlimited crock...you're way over extended on
creditbility as it is. But I do have to admit.. the last two day's I have seen
improvement in utey fanaticism about the BCS. Some of you have actually come to
the realization that you got cheated...twice...so maybe there is hope on that
front at least.
Hey Hedgie, I realize you get a kick out of getting responses, but doesn't it
get old getting taken to the woodshed night after night? I mean give it about 20
more seconds before responding next time.
hedgehog"No elite non Mormon will every go to BYU." Such as Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer, or Steve Sarkisian?

them, which is more than one can say about BYU."Hahaha, That's
rich. Maybe that should be Kyle's recruiting message. "Hey, we might be the
doormats, but at least we'll be noticed."By whom will U be
noticed? With zero TV exposure who is going to notice U? If you are the doormat
(I personally don't believe you will), is that how you want to be noticed?BYU is already locked in with at least 4 games which will be broadcast
nationally on ESPN. They will be able to broadcast all the rest of their games
nationally as well. Depending on how the season is going, ESPN has the ability
to pick up additional games as well. So tell us all again, who will be noticed?
Your naming guys who played 20 plus years ago. College football has changed and
you won't see top non lds recuits going to a lds school ever.

Earth to crowntown - YOU are irrelevant until you own an NC trophy.Okay, I don't buy it either, but to be told that BYU is irrelevant, with SO
much evidence to the contrary? And I am the one who is arrogant and
holier-than-thou???Thought so. Over the K-Whit and Bronco era, the
two teams are pretty evenly matched by every measure. Your highs have been
higher, your lows have been lower, you can slice it how you want, but it keeps
coming up pretty much like last year. No, when MWC teams were taking
PAC 10 teams to the woodshed, somehow it does seem stupid to say that the Utes
will suddenly become the new PAC matched pair with Wazzu. But then, any future
prediction for either team is worth what you pay for it.You have two
years of being great. We have a long history of being consistently good,
sometimes very good. No matter how you gnash your teeth and try to undermine
it, we have an NC. No matter how it grates the collective Y nerve, you have 2
BCS victories. And we both have good coaches leading us into

Rivals from Ann Arbor, MI to Corona, CA reading and commenting about BYU on a
daily basis:That, Boys, is relevance!
Joey Dupaix represents all that is good about the BYU program--talented,
enthusiastic, positive, and a family man with great character. The same could be
said about Brandon Doman, another product of Skyline High. Mendenhall's vision
is to build men of character, who recognize that there is life beyond football.
Winning games and conference titles and going to bowls are just icing on the
cake. That's why the Cougars "over-achieve" most years.
With Mendenhall running the defense and Doman the offense, this next season
should be an exciting one! As for the Utes, real sports fans wish them well in
their new conference. It will make our victory over them even more impressive.
