"Cornerback Brandon Burton and guard Caleb Schlauderaff were the only Utah
Utes taken in last week's National Football League Draft." Well I guess if
the prior year you had 6 players drafted and the next "only" 2 were
drafted it is somewhat of a letdown. But then you consider that only one other
team in Utah had a player drafted (Congrats Curtis Marsh and USU). Pray tell
what were the draft results for the DNews favorite mid major independent team in
Provo? Congrats to Burton and Schlauderaff, I am sure a couple other Utes
will be picked via free agency as well. Go Utes, Go Aggies. Viva
Nice article on Caleb. Can't ask for a better situation than GB.
pebbles....Freshmen normally don't enter the draft...they usually have to put
one year in of significant playing time... and having done so at a program that
started weak and finished strong the natural tendency is to stick
around...especially when things are really looking great futuristicly. Unlike a
program that started really strong but then imploded and fell apart. Why bother
staying when the situation for the next year looks even more unrealistic or
StockI understand BYU finished strong, but truly, how much
confidence does that give BYU fans? (I ask this in all seriousness) BYU beat up
on bad teams. Utah was the only team BYU played in it's last 6 games with a
winning record, and BYU lost that game. I'm not saying BYU didn't improve and
Heaps isn't a good QB, and BYU doesn't have potential, but basing the future on
the last half of last season seems a little tenuous to me.
Apparently the Pac-12 deal will be announced tomorrow. 225 mill/year for 12
years, 18.75 mil/year/school. Not bad.Fox will be the primary
partner with ESPN as the secondary. Apparently no Pac-12 network as of now.Not bad.
Pokey...I don't remember rattling our chain ...but since you poked your nose in
uninvited anyway....just remember a possible win at Montana State is about as
significant as a Junior leaving early for the draft and being a fifth round pick
followed. But getting crushed by USC a week later and then having everyone else
follow on using Utah as a doormat ...now that's what I'd call tenuous. And by
the way there was actually an ad in the L. A. Times taking orders for other
PAC team fans to order customized Univ of Utah and Colorado doormats to place
outside their doors. One saying "Welcome" and the other other one...
probably for the back door... saying "Better luck next time"
Holy Cow, Stock. You misinterpreted my post. I was asking a serious
question. I don't understand why BYU's future is so bright and Utah's is so
bleak. Both teams beat up on terrible competition. But it seems that because
BYU did it at the end of the season, and Utah struggled that Utah is totally
down, and BYU is totally up, despite the fact that Utah beat BYU and their QB
looks to be 100% . I'm truly trying to have a mature conversation
here, but if you decide to take it the lowest common denominator, that's your
choice. Also, I didn't know I had to be invited to post on here. Guess I have
to learn the ropes.
"Pokey...I don't remember rattling our chain"BYU troll you
rattle our chains with endless put downs on Utah articles. Why would you not
expect a response?
I'll answer it for you pocy. BYU was extremely young last year with most of the
starters, and guys that got playing time, being freshman and sophomores.
Certainly the competition towards the end of the year was easier and that helped
but the theory is that ending up on a high note is better than ending on a low
one. It helps breed confidence.I could easily compare BYU's last
season to utah's '07 season which I am sure you remember to be not very good. I
think they won 1 more game than BYU did last year. Utah was young and needed to
learn to win that year. After a rough 1st half of the season by the end of the
year they were playing much better and won their bowl game. We all know '08 was
then a stellar year for them. Now before the wedgies of the world
claim I am predicting BYU will go undefeated next year I am not, those seasons
are rare, but the similarities are certainly there.BYU was young,
they improved, and now they should be better. That is why fans are optimistic.
Now utah on the otherhand was a mostly veteran team last year. They finished
very poorly, that cannot be denied, they lost alot of good players including
several underclassmen that would have been better this year than they were last
year but are now gone. Their qb is a huge question mark for multiple
reasons. One is the injury and missing spring bal, but there are legitimate
questions as to whether he is really very good and certainly whether he is very
tough. The backups did not look good in the spring.None of the rb's
has ever had a D1 carry. The oline lost multiple starters. The coaching staff was revamped and the offense was completely scrapped for a
new one. That takes time. They are entering a much tougher
conference. There will not be many "down" weeks. In short
utah has many more question marks than BYU does and they were definately
trending down to finish the year. In all seriousness I think they
are in for a tough season and I think Whittingham and chow realize it as many of
their cryptic quotes have seemed to indicate.
DuckI appreciate the insight. I think the comparison to '07 is
probably a pretty good one. I think Wynn's health is certainly a question mark,
but I think talent wise, he is closer to the '09 Wynn vs the '10 Wynn, and the
offense will be a much better fit for him, despite the learning curve. Not to
say that a new offense isn't going to have hiccups, but I expect the offense to
be more consistent than last year given the new o-line coach and commitment to
the run.I expect Utah to represent well in their first year. I've
said all along I thought 8-4 was a realistic record, though 7-5, 9-3 are
possible. I don't see them sliding down the abyss, or struggling near the
mendoza line, but, that could happen depending on health.
Well pocy for your sake, and a few of the other good Utah fans around here, I
hope they do well. I'm sceptical but if they do I'll be happy for you guys.
Thanks Duck, same to you and the cougs.
