The nice thing about BYU is that because of the way they manage money, they
don't owe previous coaches money that equates to more than what the current
coach is getting. Wow.Rose earns his dollars, and does deserve more.
The team should be even better in the near future.
Are sure? Hedgehog, Chris B, utahcountyute, and many others had me convinced he
was leaving for Utah.Perhaps they are right and Rose is actually
taking an assistant position at Utah.
I hope Coach Rice stays with BYU. It is difficult to find winning combinations
in coaching staffs.
The way I look at it Rose is smart staying if he can get the "Y" to
cough up more money so that he can control the WCC and the High School Jamboree
contests!!!Most of the High School Gymnasiums that the Cougars will
play in during the basketball season will bring back a lot of memories to the
Cougar faithful as they show up to the games to only learn the game is sold out
and scalpers are unheard of!!Ohhhhh and the ESPN contract with those
Monday night 10pm tipoffs should have plenty of exposure to the East Coast
fanatics that pop pills all night because they can't sleep.
Theuss is interviewing UNLV.
Rose has well served BYU, and BYU has well served Rose. The community support
in his time of cancer is nothing to sneeze at. I'm glad he is staying. Rose
and Stew Morrill are great coaches and class acts, and the schools in this state
need to hold onto them.
Hope Coach Rose is around for a very long time. Just for fun, I'll
pay attention to the tip off times for BYU and if anyone cares about the uTes,
let me know when their games tip off. We can compare notes and then see which
team the east coast never has the chance to watch. Though in this age when
everyone uses DVR, does the media really ever miss games?
Ah, remember how football threw basketball under the bus? That's what just paid
for the pay increase!Look for life in the WCC to be not quite so
under the bus as our beloved little siblings like to project. Granted, I won't
be able to get in to Spokane any time soon to see the Zags and the Y, but I bet
a lot of new facilities will come to fruition if we stay there very long. Good luck in the future to Coach K. Thanks coach Rose! We appreciate
you! And now we can afford to pay you more what you're worth.
Dear Honor Code: I think I speak for everyone here when I say........HUH?????
Dear Alterego the way the east coast writers and coaches vote I wonder if they
even know what a DVR is, and if they do I am not sure they use it. Dear Honor Code: Not every game will be on ESPN and the games that are not on
ESPN will be viewed on BYUTV availabe in 50-60 million homes. I read recently
that there are an average of 3.4 persons per house. That is equivalent to 170
million - 204 million viewers. Not bad. I do not know how many homes have
ESPN, but that is still a significant number of viewers. Many of the March
Madness games were viewed on the East Coast starting at 9:00 pm., regardless of
who was playing. That is the same for many games throughout the year. Do you
have a copy of the ESPN contract that states the games will be at 10:00 pm. I
don't think so.
Everyone knows that the key to winning is recruiting. I hope Rose takes Jimmer
out to dinner.
Great for Coach Rose. He really deserves the commitment and the financial award
coming to him. Rose is a class act and I wish him all the best in the future.
I don't understand why the BYU detractors keep whining about the small arenas in
the WCC.There is no ticket revenue sharing in the WCC, so it won't
effect BYU if there are 2,000 or 20,000 fans in the stands when they go on the
road. Further, they get to keep all gate receipts when they play at home. That's a plus-plus-plus for the Cougars. And I'm guessing the
players would rather not play in big-arena away games. It's much harder to win
at New Mexico because of the crowd. It'll make the conference road games more
neutral.And we're talking, what, eight games in a thirty-game
season? It's all good for BYU.
Honor Code Your jealous insecurity is showing. While BYU
is playing on ESPN/BYUtv in HD, where will your team be, buried on some fuzzy,
obscure regional broadcast?
"Honor Code" = another screen name for Hedgie/Chris B???? I think so.
Different name, same foolishness.
Hedgie/Chris B,Unlike the utes, the cougs aren't paying for two
coaches or have an under performing team. Your cougar blasting indicates one
Good for Dave. That is rare in this day and age. He can make enough in two more
years to retire and living in Utah is a great place.
Rose has quite a large offensive playbook, all the plays are similar and are
called the 35 foot heave.
Most of the WCC teams have access to larger arenas that they can rent for the
BYU games IF they want the larger revenues which go solely to the host team. BYU does not care if they are playing in a small arena as long as they
win. BYU cares about the national and international coverage which neither the
MTN nor the PAC provide. The Utes can watch their team lose (for the
most part) in the PAC IF that game is broadcast and IF they can find it. The PAC
is an improvement over the MTN but it will not have the reach nor the coverage
that BYU has.
Funny that Ute fans will mention BYU playing in High School gymnasiums next
year, but for the life of me isn't that what the Ute Basketball program plays in
front of now?...The amount of Fans in the stands at the U, I would think even Jr
Jazz games attract more people!!
Good... Because obviously Coach Rose had a LOT to do with Jimmer's development
(AND the development of ALL the players on the team to maximize their
potential)A player like Jimmer comes and can help your program for 4
years at the most. A guy like Rose can help your program be the BEST it can
be... EVERY YEAR.I hope the Utes can learn this lesson. Players
come and go... the COACH is the only guy who stays around.
Good for Coach Rose. He's certainly earned a raise. I had hoped for a coach of
his caliber for the Utes. Maybe Coach Krystkowiak will get there in a few
years.Does BYU still only offer their coaches one year contracts, or
are they now offering multi-year deals? That is the big difference between BYU
and all other schools. Other schools have to offer multi-year deals with
buy-out clauses to get good coaches. Those buy-out clauses are killers.
Good for Coach Rose. Hope he's in the $1M plus club now. He deserves more but I
don't think the Y will ever engage in an arms race with its coaches salaries...
The Wasatch Wasps her in Heber have more fans come to their games than the Utes.
Perhaps Utah could play their games at East High, which is a few blocks away
and it will look like they have a large crowd following them. BYU
will do just fine for those 8 games and rake in the money on the home games and
the away games for other venues, plus the TV income. It is a win-win situation
for the Cougars.
Rose is pretty good, but any coach looks great with Jimmer on the team. My prediction is that next year the team will sink into mediocrity and
we'll wonder why we thought Rose was so good.
Average size of WCC arenas (not including the Marriott Center) - 4,564Actual average attendance in the Huntsman Center this year - about 5,000It's hard to understand why Utah fans are mocking the size of WCC
arenas, because the Utes have grown accustomed to playing in front of WCC-sized
crowds. With Gonzaga's arena being larger than a couple of arenas in
the MWC (6,000), the net difference in crowd size between BYU playing in the MWC
versus playing in the WCC, will be 7 road games in smaller arenas per season,
and even the larger arenas in the MWC often don't have more than 5,000 actual
attendance - see Wyoming, TCU, Air Force and Colorado State, most years, and
Utah this year.WCC + ESPN/BYUtv > MWC + the Mtn
If he didn't go to NC State then he is not going anywhere - although maybe he is
still bitter about the loss in the championship game.
FDR: I'm guessing that soon Jimmer's contract will exceed Coach Roses's new
one. Jimmer might have to pick up the tab.
Frank Martin just announced that he is remaining at Kansas State because its the
place to be. Why havn't we heard from Rose, indicating that he is remaining at
the Y. It would be nice to have an official announcement, don't you think!
Hey SP, my guess is that the Cougs win 25+ games next year. Mediocrity is
only for the NE bench in SLC.
This is a game we play whenever a guy has a good year especially when the good
year comes after many other good years. Guys like Jeff Call, pull out last
year's story on the possibility that Dave would leave, adds the Andy Katz info
and here we go again. My question for Jeff would be. (after Jeff how did you
luck into such a great job) : You work for an LDS owned paper connected with an
LDS school, and yet Andy Katz with ESPN in New York is your source for info on
the LDS schools's B-ball program, why? Dave Rose was not going anywhere, why
play this game?
The addition of BYU will only make the WCC a much stronger conference. Gonzaga
has been the conference showpiece for years-with St. Mary's coming on strong in
recent years. With BYU the WCC should become a regular three-invite league
every March. You can almost guarantee that EVERY BYU road game in the WCC will
be a sell-out for the first few years. The same phenomena we witnessed this
past couple of seasons at TCU, Air Force, Wyoming, Utah, etc.The WCC
will not drag BYU down, as much as the PAC 10.2 will drag down Utah. On the
other hand, BYU will raise up the WCC.
Does anyone know what it means ... "But BYU showed a high level of
commitment it hasn't in the past with the men's basketball program"...other
than salary, what has changed.
Still Blue,I love BYU basketball and Coach Rose's teams. My concern is the
higher the salary the greater the pressure to win, which could lead to pressure
to recruit top talent. Jimmers and Ainges only come along ever so rarely. I
would rather BYU lose than see compromise for top talent.
Rose is a keeper for BYU.BYU winning in small WCC arenas on ESPN or
BYUtv makes me happy.Making the WCC a two (sometimes three) bid
conference makes me happy.Listening to Ute fans grasping at straws
makes me LOL.
I don't understand why the Ute trolls continue to take jabs at the WCC. They
lost to the bottom team in the WCC. If the WCC is a high school jamboree, does
that mean the Utes are playing at a junior high level, since they can't beat the
bottom team in the WCC?
Despite the size of the arenas, average attendance at WCC basketball games next
year will be bigger than the average attendance in the Huntsman Center, unless
of course we are comparing gymnastics attendance? The grease fire on
the hill continues...
merrill IS NOT a great coach. He loves being a big fish in a small pond. He plays
an easy schedulenot like byu & utah. Rose is a very good
@mount oLIMPusSpeaking of Coach Rose's offensive Playbook, you left out
the half-court buzzer beater and the 25 pt whipping on your home court.@honor codeYes, playing in all those high school gymnasiums in the WCC
with paltry crowds of 5000-6000 spectators will bring back fond memories of
playing your Utah Utes in the Huntsman Center (Lone Peak H.S. has bigger
crowds!). We picked up your slack and filled your gym with our
fans. No doubt WCC schools will rent larger arenas to take advantage of BYU's
extensive national fanbase. It muss sting to see how much ESPN loves BYU and how
it totally ignores the Utes.
It's official, Dave Rose is staying at BYU!Press conference today at
1pm at Legends Grill to discuss Coach Rose's new contract.
