So why did my husband run into him at the local grocery store stocking a cart
full of sports drinks in Cache Valley a few weeks ago? Hmmm . . .
@ Mom of 8. The show was recorded months ago. It's not live. I'm sure he's
home now. The real question should be, with the Word of Wisdom why
are there so many fat Mormons on the Biggest Loser? There were 8 this season.
That a high ratio. I'm not knocking Mormons (I'm Mormon) just amazed that so
many of us disregard the law of health and only focus on the no coffee, tobacco
and alcohol part.
@uph0m3r ... it was actually 6 contestants. But, there have been a number of
others LDS participants in the years past. But, I agree with you ...
the focus is on no coffee, tobacco and alcohol ... and less focus on eating
healthy and in moderation. It's sad when you sit in an Elders Quorum class and
half of the time is spend defending the foods they eat.
Interesting that a story about Gardner being saved on B.L. becomes a
dissertation on the weight habits of Latter-day Saints. 60% of the country is
now fat (including me). I agree it is terrible for my health and well-being. Fat
is an epidemic in all circles. As for LDS, I believe we eat because we don't
drink alcohol, coffee or tea and it's a social habit. In fact, I was much
thinner when I smoked and drank coffee, but I'd rather have a temple recommend.
So please try not to be so judgmental. The Lord and I are working on it. Thank
@Go Utes. Not quite. Yes there have been 6 this season that we as viewers were
aware of. However, last night saw them bring on "Couple #12" who has
been working at home with the chance of getting to stay at the ranch. This would
happen if they had lost the same percentage of their body weight that Kaylee
(one of the Mormons) has. The couple is from Odgen Utah. If they are Mormon,
that makes it 8. They will continue to work at home and be back for the finale.
Being fat doesn't make you drive drunk. Drugs, alcohol, etc ruin lives and
relationships when abused. Abused is the key word. This stuff is also bad for
your health beyond a little chubby stomach. So the lord said it's not approved
for all members. Man I need a cookie..... Don't over think things folks. Enjoy
@GOUTES! Yes you are right only 6, I was also counting the 2 people on last
nights episode from Ogden. I just assumed they were Mormon :)And GO
I think he is going to be one like many other past contestants who is going to
pack the weight back on. He hasn't figured out why he is overeating. he's been
having a lapse of judgment and overeating for 2 weeks now on the show. And he
says he wants to loose weight to be the man his wife deserves to have. Until he
figures out that HE wants to loose his obesity for HIMSELF he is never going to
be successful at keeping the weight off.
We are fat because there is nothing left for us to do. The list of can't is long
and wide. Now you want to take eating out or enjoying food away too? As to Rulon, I think it showed great weakness when he went against his
buddies wishes. It really was a selfish act. Perhaps that explains why he is
having a hard time figuring out how to be happy and relying on food to fill that
hole. But at the end of the day, it is the quality of man he is that I look at,
not his weight. Some of the best people I knew who did the greatest work for
their communities and families had personal "issues" that would fall
into the realm of the Word of Wisdom. I would rather be aligned with these
people than someone who looks awesome in a pair of jeans.
Maybe so many Mormons are on the show because they recognize a problem and want
to deal with it. It's better than denying the problem, as so many do. That's what this life is for--identifying our weaknesses and finding ways to
make them strengths. If we were perfect, we wouldn't be going through this test.
I grew up with the couple 12 from Ogden Utah. I graduated with Vance, and Mrs.
Jackson was my 7th and 8th grade TLC teacher in Junior High. Also I think yes
that they are mormon, but they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet!
utah is actually one of the least obese states in the union. We rank 44th.My guess it that the utahns are overweight, but still able to excercise
because they do not smoke. The ten states with the highest obesity rates
are:1 Mississippi 2 Alabama 3 Tennessee 4 West Virginia
5 Louisiana 6 Oklahoma 7 Kentucky 8 Arkansas 9
South Carolina 10 North Carolina The least obese state was
hey mom of 8, did your husband mention what rulon looked like?
Word of Wisdom stated that we should eat with thanksgiving and in moderation.
Eat meats sparingly except for extreme conditions when fighting cold weather and
famine. These are forgotten when eat more than it was necessarily to sustain on
our life, mostly we do not want to see foods wasted away.
Come on, people- I assume the obesity rates are pretty equivalent from LDS to
non-LDS. I also think it's a bit silly to talk about poor eating habits
(whether quality of foods or quantity of foods) as "well we can't
smoke/drink so what else is there to do?". For people who have the self
control and determination to watch what they eat and exercise, they have been
shown to be happier and have a higher quality of life. It's far too easy to sit
on a couch and snack non-stop throughout the day. Personally, when I'm
exercising and eating well, I think my spirituality is improved as well. Our
physical bodies are one half of our soul!
I had to wonder if that was El Sol's salsa he was scarfing down with those
tortilla chips in his room. Yummers! That's worth breaking your diet for...
Err... no wait... must control hunger... Um... Rulon
should be ashamed of wasting his opportunity to torture himself at the Biggest
Loser Ranch. I do think Rulon is one of the few folks on the show
that really hasn't shown a lot of determination to change. Sure he's given a
number of teary-eyed speeches, but it always just sorta rings hollow to me. I
hope he can figure himself out by the end of his time there--cuz he's got a long
way to go.
I've been watching all season, and I think Rulon, though very likeable, has some
major emotional issues to resolve. And he has only scratched the surface. And
yes, his comments seem to be what we want to hear, but they aren't that
heartfelt. I think if he applies himself, he has got to be one of the favorites
to win the whole thing.I love how NBC set up the tease so we thought
he was going home. But Jen spent too much time getting spa treatment and dining
out, and not enough working out, and those choices caught up with her. She bowed
out gracefully though.
UtahMD, common man. Listen, I am what is considered "over weight" by
all weight charts. And yet, I work out daily, run between 6 and 7 miles a day,
and have a resting heart rate in the 40's. And when I go out with friends in the
evenings, they have their drinks, and I have my buffalo wings and a diet coke.
My doctor calls me a freak of nature, I just say being in shape and being skinny
don't need to be linked. And I don't think being skinny makes you a
better person than another, because you are skinny. I don't think being in
shape makes you more intelligent or "spiritual" either. I would
consider many of the people I work out with some of the least spiritual people I
know.... there is no link.I am happy for you that you have found the
balance that makes life whole for "you". But It gets a little old
that people think they need to force their brand of happy on other people, or
demean others who find happiness in other ways.
