There's no doubt BYU can beat Florida, and it's great to see the love from all over. Forde is a head scratcher...he is usually so pro BCS, especially the SEC. However, his predictions are usually way off. If you've ever looked at his bowl predictions, he is usually under .500. He has little logic to his guesses. Florida may be better this year, but so is BYU. People give the edge to Florida because of coaching, but remember which team won last year and the loser had won the NC twice the last time they were in this tourney. This game may go down to the wire....I hope so, because those are the fun games to watch! Break their big jaws Cougs!

The beauty of a Tournament.....We actually get the chance to see if BYU can beat Florida. These games have been great. Fun to watch and fun to cheer. Really puts the BCS bowl system to shame. I hope the rating reflect that as well.

"CAN" our mighty Cougs reach the Elite 8? Yes. "WILL" they? I don't think so. I certainly hope I'm wrong, but I'm trying to be more of a realist here. "IF", and it's a significant "IF", Jimmer's supporting cast can be as strong as they've been the last 2 games & MWC tourney, they have a chance. Again, I just don't think they will. Cougs Nation, please don't hate me. I AM one of you and want to stay in the "club"!!! :o)

In short - YES - BYU can reach the elite 8. BYU will have to play the best game of the year to beat Florida but after seeing the Gonzaga game it is certainly possible. BYU is up against the wall with out Davies but as long as you have Jimmer then anything is possible. Florida is good enough to win the whole thing so that is what the Y is up against.

If BYU plays the same game as they did against Gonzaga. Season average or better in most areas and tough defense' they can beat anyone in the country. Live by the three and die by the three is what to be worried about. If they don't spread the floor on offense with solid outside shooting, they will likely lose to Florida. Either way, this has been an incredible season for BYU. This year isn't over by a long shot but next year could be just as good.

Of course they can! At this point, anyone can beat anyone, depends on who is having a good night. Look at the Vegas lines - those guys are good at what they do and motivated to get it right. BYU is a slight underdog, but they proved last year against this same Florida team that they won't be intimidated and that the championship experience of their coach and program is no trump card.

Absolutely they can. How is that even a question? Will they? Who knows. I do know this however. Whatever happens this weekend it has been a great year for BYU basketball and its fans. Lotsa fun, lotsa wins and lots of attention. I don't think there has been one single BYU article that wedgie hasn't posted on and she lives in michigan in her mothers basement. That is how we know BYU has penetrated deep into the national conciousness. LOL

Don't get your hopes up. All you have really done is beat two double digit seeds and won games you were supposed to win.

    H-hog:

Thank you for yet another of your predictions that will guarantee a BYU win. Everyone of your predictions has proved to be wrong and this one will be no different - thank you very much.

Enough already that the absence of Davies has the Cougars' "back up against the wall". How have they done lately without him? The supporting cast is stepping up big time - they will continue on Thursday. Never a doubt.

    BYU - 88
    Florida - 71

Yes. If BYU can shoot like they did against Gonzaga (or better) they will win by double digits.

And I give my word that I will not comment on a Utah basketball article for the rest of the season whether BYU wins or not.

Isn't it great that we can actually find out, because there is a tournament, unlike the BCS? I really thought Gonzaga would handle BYU. I was wrong. Isn't it great that we don't have to sit here and speculate, and the quality of a team doesn't have to be determined by the uneducated and biased guesses of guys like Chris B and Hedgehog? According to them, BYU was "supposed" to have lost to Wofford, and "supposed" to have lost to Gonzaga. Frankly, I don't care what they are "supposed" to do, only what they have actually done. And they have actually made it to the Sweet 16 despite everyone who said they weren't supposed to before they played, but have now changed their tune and said that it's no big deal, because they were supposed to. Let it go. You're not less of a person because BYU wins basketball games. It's okay.

    Dave S

"All you have really done is beat two double digit seeds and won games you were supposed to win."

How many teams from the mighty Big East didn't get past those double-digit seeds?

All your silly statement proves is how little you know about the NCAA basketball tournament.

If you really believe that then those banners hanging in the HC are really meaningless.

Take down the banners for Utah's 1966 Final Four, Utah's 1996 Sweet Sixteen, and Utah's 1997 Elite Eight teams, because all U really did was win games U were supposed to win against lower seeds.

btw, those are just three examples.

People who get mad about the "haters" and their predictions, its all sports banter. It makes the rivalry with Utah fun.

Im proud to be a Cougar fan, and im proud to be a Utah hater, just like so many of my freinds who are cougar and Utah fans.

If you take chris b and Hedge failed predeictions (they've been wrong 30+ times this season) at least they have guts to come out after every embarrassing prediction and TRY to make it fun between the two fan bases.

Win or lose on Thursday this season has been Jimmerific.

I like our chances on Thursday. Either way it ends up, I've had a ball this year. I just hope it can last a little longer. Perhaps three more rounds? (Pretty please?)

It's been 30 years since the BYU had a chance to play in a Sweet 16 game.

It's been 30 years since BYU has had a player like Fred.

One thing to remember is that 30 years ago, BYU won the Sweet 16 game to enable them to go to the Elite 8.

Fred has had an amazing season.

To get to the level of that team from 30 years ago, BYU has got to win Thursday.
    Night.

Win or lose, I think fans ought to appreciate what Rose, Fred and the team have done.

It could be another long dry spell (30 years) before this opportunity happens again.

Answer: There are 16 teams that can reach the Elite 8 or beyond, and BYU is one of them.

Of all the folks who submitted brackets to ESPN, the site reports that no one predicted all 16 teams. Presdent Obama predicted 10 of the 16, and he is considered to be in the top 99.9%. So, who knows if BYU will advance, but they certainly have a good chance.

Except Mr. President predicted Florida to win this game.

    Good Luck.

Everyone listen to Hedgehog and Chris B, they clearly know what they're talking about. They've predicted losses for BYU every game this season and have been right 4 out of 36 times.

Ladies and Gentleman, we are dealing with geniuses.

If they beat florida they can make the final four.. Florida is good though its not going to be easy. Hoping Butler pulls through and we can upset florida.

If BYU comes out and plays like they did against SDSU in San Diego and like they did against Gonzaga, then they can win. If it's just the Jimmer show, then probably not. BUT, I've eaten a lot of tasty crow this season, so who knows.
    Go Cougs!

    RE: Skywalker

Hey Skywalker don't forget 1998 when the Utes defeated two #1 seeds en route to the National Championship game. That fact proves your "silly" comments don't hold much weight my friend.

Do a little research and I might listen to what you have to say. If BYU can defeat a #2 seeded Florida you might begin to make me a believer.

  • CougarOnTheProwl Murray, UT

Yes...BYU is certainly capable of knocking off Florida, they did it last year and are riding into this game with alot of confidence. They will need their key role players ( Emery, Hartsock, Abouo, Collinsworth) to continue to play well and I think they will. And then there is the Jimmer factor of course, when you have a player like Jimmer, you can never count BYU out. He has come up big time and time again in big games this season and hopefully he will be able to do so again in this one. BYU doesn't have to shoot over 50 percent in this game to win it, they beat gonzaga by 22 shooting 53 percent. If they shoot between 45 to 50 percent they will be in good shape and have a great chance to win. Hoping for the best and a Cougar victory but no matter what happens, the Cougars have had a great season and one to remember.

    Dave S.,

Take out two of Utah's starting big men in that tournament and let's see how far they would have gotten. BYU is exceeding expectations, which is why the nation is still talking about them.

It is really something to see Davies go from a role player to a lottery choice while setting on the bench. It would be classy to see this not used as an excuse so much.

In addition to superstar and Wooden player of the year Ainge, the 1981 team had two guys who went on to solid journeyman careers in the NBA (Kite and Roberts), and another who became a legend in the Spanish league (Trumbo). The BYU starting 5 is good, but probably doesn't have future pros on it.

The Courgars are definitely overachieving. I really hope the trend continues, but even if it doesn't, we'll all look back on this as a great year. Go Cougs!
