    I love watching Jimmer play.

BYU if they want to continue to play, need to stop with the stupid fouls.

I heard so much about Collinsworth in high school but his offensive skills are suspect at best. He is disappointing to watch.

Over-all, not a bad game. Jimmer was very patient and tried involving everyone. Who was that that blew the wide open layup off a pass from Jimmer? That was bad bad bad

Good win, but we are going to need to step up next round.

Well, we certainly didn't use up our hot shooting or charitable refs in that game. Next game would be a great place to shoot for average and have at least some consistency in the calls.

Go cougs, one more game at a time.

And chisb, thanks for attending. This exposure thing is really working out rather well.

Excellent win! There were tons of close games today, it was nice to watch the TEAM come out and play and keep Wofford at arms length. I would have liked to have seen a double-double from Jimmer, there were a couple of gimmies that his teammates missed. Great way for Magnusson to enjoy the tournament as a senior, eh?

I love to watch Kyle C. play. I have to say, I find he and his brother to be very inspiring. They play the game with steady strength, and seem to live the Gospel the same way. I enjoyed hearing the commentators discussing Kyle's upcoming mission, I wish him all the best!

It was a great day to be a Cougar!!

Well it is a win. After watching SDSU and FL play this was a frustrating game.

BYU shot poorly. Collingsworth rebounded well. Hartsock came to play. He got a couple of dorky fouls. Magnuson looked bad at first but got better the more he played. Abouo had his head in the floor until the last of the game when he actually played when he was needed the most (Hartsock out).

BYU played tight but played better when they got a lead. They had flashes of good play.

Wofford had some players. They were an experienced team. At least BYU got the first one.

BYU is better than they played in this game.

An NCAA win in two consecutive years? Feels like a new trend is in place!

Good job Cougars, now get some rest, work on those shots and get ready for the next one!

I keep thinking the coaching staff has figured how to get the Cougars to play better. They keep proving me wrong. (Before anyone writes something to the effect, well, they won didn't they?) If they don't something better (in fact, a lot of things better), next game will be their last one.

Shooting 27% (3 point) and 39% (field goals) is not going to beat many teams. No doubt the Wofford players and coaches will go back to SC with much of an impression of the Cougars.

Note: who called up that completely classless play at the end when Jimmer put up the 27' AIR BALL with a 11 point lead???

Congratulations to both BYU and Morehead State for picking up their second NCAA wins within the past 30 years. I think the scores today were very telling. Just looking at teams who are seeded 3 or higher the margins of victory were as usual very impressive. UConn won by 29, Pittsburgh won by 23, San Diego State won by 18, Florida won by 28, and in Provo the victory was by 8 points. The NCAA committee should be thanked for such a high seed, anything lower than a 3 seed might have turned out to be too tough. Did I hear about 8000 boo's at the end of the game when Jimmer tried to pour on the points by shooting a 50 foot 3 pointer, I don't understand why they would boo, that wasn't classless at all.

One to the next game... St. Johns and Gonzaga.

Good night trolls. Rest comfy knowing that you have another game to watch on your little troll tv in your mommy's basement this Saturday. Gosh, that just has to irritate the heck out of all of you... makes my day!

Well, they were tight and played down to the level of their competition. I'd love to see Emory get his shot back---it's been missing for a few weeks now. If he and Jimmer click on the same night, and Hartsock has a half-way decent game, the Cougars will advance. If not, it could be trouble. They got lazy at the end and could have easily won by a bigger nargin, but hey, save something for Saturday. After a win then, you have about 5 days to rest for the next round. Just make sure there IS a next round. As for the margin of victory, its no big deal, as long as you have the greater score (unlike golf, more like bowling and football).

  • NevadaCoug Overton, NV
    March 17, 2011 8:07 p.m.

Sure, rip on Jimmer for throwing up a long 3 at the end of the game. Um, you DO realize that the shot clock was winding down and somebody had to take a shot? He was trying to avoid a shot clock violation and keep the clock running. Unfortunately the air ball ruined that plan.

Some people will find any little thing to complain about, though.

    Bigutefan,

I agree with you Utah would have played much better than BYU today. It is too bad that the selection committee didn't let Utah in the big dance.

  • CaliCougar Claremont, California
    March 17, 2011 8:09 p.m.

Wer - Not sure what you mean by "classless play" regarding the Fredette shot at the end of the game (which I loosely call a shot)...the shot clock was at 1 or 2 seconds when he put it up and there was still 8 or 9 seconds on the game clock...unless you expected BYU not to shoot at all and turn the ball over? I honestly can't ever remember that scenario ever happening at the end of a college basketball game...I think it's a non-issue.

  • Cougar in Texas Houston, TX
    March 17, 2011 8:09 p.m.

    bigutefan,

Fredette's last shot was taken with 6 seconds left on the clock. What should he have done to not "pad his stats"? Just let the shot clock expire? At 35 feet from the basket he could either have shot or drove it where he probably would have been fouled and people like you would still accuse him of padding his stats.

BYU has more than two NCAA wins in the last 30 years. They have 9.

A 4 seed actually lost today to a 13 seed. New Mexico was a 3 seed last year and won their first round game by only 4 points.

The last time Utah was in the tournament (way back when) they were a 5 seed and got throttled by a 12 seed in the first round. How is it to have the Utes be irrelevant?

    Please do your homework.

  • Rock Chalk BYU Lawrence, KS
    March 17, 2011 8:10 p.m.

Oh please!! Now margin of victory matters? This isn't football. Any game that is over going into the final few minutes is good enough for me. It could have been an 11 point victory if Wofford didn't hit that last pointless shot, and it could have been 14 points if you tack on Jimmer's "classless" shot. Both of those things happened in the final *8 seconds*, when the game was completely over. If those two things had happened the other way, then what would you have complained about?? I have no doubt the haters would have risen to the challenge. The biggest realization the haters (and the rest of us) need to come to is that they are haters, nothing will make them happy. Even if BYU had 7 wins in the tournament (not even possible), they would still have something to complain about.

    One and ... counting!!

  • oh ye confederacy of dunces Flushing, NY

Not the prettiest win, but we got it. You know your team is good when they play so poorly, and yet hold strong for a comfortable win. If we can shoot next game, we have a strong chance of advancing--if we shoot like we did tonight--that'll be the season. Also, we need Abuo's energy the entire game.
BigFruteMan: Thanks for your interest in the cougs. It's gotta be tough being a fan of a failing program who just fired their 3rd coach in the last what? 5 years? It is hilarious to witness the demise of the once very respectable U of U Bball program. I've heard the board of trustees at the U is considering scrapping the basketball program. When you cannot keep your own players on the team and see a different coach every 2-3 years, it just isn't worth the effort anymore.

Sure glad we could get Charles back into the game - his production spurt made all the difference. I noticed too that once he had to leave with four fouls Jimmer pressed more and missed shots. Still a nice spreading around of the scoring - four players in double figures and Jackson close. The Cougars are going to need everybody's A-game against either Gonzaga or St. Johns.

Oh, and CJ, Collinsworth collected 11 rebounds and 3 assists. You really find him a disappointment?

Sorry, your guess is way off, no prize for you this year, try again next year.

    -------------------------------

Not a pretty game for the Cougars, but any win in the NCAA tournament is a good win.

Wofford is a conference champion, with an eight-game winning streak coming into the NCAA tournament.

Magnusson was clutch coming off the bench hitting 2 of 3 from 3pt and scoring 10 points. Just the kind of boost BYU is going to need from the bench to continue advancing. It was nice to see Hartsock hit a couple of 3's.

And Jimmer, 32 points, 7 assists, on an off-shooting night; just the kind of performance you'd expect from the National Player of the Year on an off night.

I would love to see Chris B's and Hedgehog's bracket. As much as they hate BYU we all know that even they aren't dumb enough to pick wofford over BYU. The question is how far do the really have to cougs going? I'll bet they have BYU in the sweet 16 even though they are haters. If not, looks like they just lost out on a bunch of points! Either way BYU gets the point and the upper hand!

A win is a win. Glad to see the Cougars play. CBS likes Jimmer and the Cougars so they were the prime time game for TV viewing. Love it.

It seemed the Cougars were coasting at the end of the game. Coach Rose was here as a player and he knows how to preserve strenght and energy for the next game. A win by 1 is still a win. Style points and point spread do not count in this tournament. It is strictly an honor to be invited.

Ugly game but we will take the win... There were times when I thought that we looked more like this decades running utes than the far superior cougars that we have all come to enjoy...

It's beginning to look like we will be facing one of our future league opponents in the next round.... We need another game on game transition like we did with St. Mary's after South Florida and New Mexico after TCU...

I'm curious LasVegasUteFan.... Did you expect BYU not to take a shot in the last minute as the shot clock was expiring?... The Basketball IQ for some of you guys who cheer for the college team out of Salt Lake is completely underwhelming.

Jimmer needs to handle the ball most of the time. Collingsworth and Emery need to play/know their roles on this team. I'll just bet that Jimmer will give it back to them when two/three men collapse onto him. It's almost as if they look him off, at times.

Lets put Brandon Davies into James Anderson's uniform. Think anyone would notice.

This is great fun and Dave Rose is the man.

This is not a deep team. We've got the best guard line in the nation and Collingsworth plays like a demon but but he can't hit a shot further than 6' away from the hoop. Abouo is a wonderful athlete who can sometimes hit a 3 but not consistently. Hartsock is a good player but he's not Fred Roberts. Anderson gives his all but he's simply not a very athletic. We haven't seen much of Rogers lately and I'm puzzled by that. The cougs will have to play much better to win the next game. I'm not optimistic. There's no way they go further than the sweet 16.

  • dahomes Phoenix, AZ

    @Woodyff

There are no points for glamour at this point. A win is a win, whether you win by 29 or on a buzzer beater. At the end of the day one team lives to play again and the other goes home. You can ask Vandy and Louisville if they feel good about just "barely" losing today.

BYU plays another day, while Wofford goes home.

  • CJ Miles Dallas, TX

Is there a reason Davies has to be suspended for the entire basketball season? Shouldn't he be able to come back if they advance to the Sweet 16? Why was the suspension not for a certain amount of games?

And yes Collinsworth did have a bunch of rebounds but his offensive skills are horrible at best. He struggles to make a free throw.....

I thought is was a great game. Looked to me like BYU sized up their opponent and conserved their energy for the next game, doing enough to get up by 10 and coasting from there. Wofford looked like the winner of a major Juco league, and I thought BYU could have won by 30 if they thought it was necessary. But, they'll definitely have to up the energy and shooting percentage to beat Gonzaga, because practice time is over.

  • dahomes Phoenix, AZ
    March 17, 2011 11:16 p.m.

I was cautious to not call you a Ute fan, as most people would make that assumption!

Your point is well made. IF (underline, bold) BYU plays as mediocre as they played today and IF (underline, bold) Gonzaga plays as well as they did tonight, then BYU would be in trouble.

The good teams though (in any sport, really) find a way to win games and BYU did that today.

Not a good showing for BYU but a win is a win... right sammyg isn't that what you were saying about the Ute football down the stretch when we struggling? :)

Shocked that Gonzaga destroyed my St. Johns team. They were a beast on the boards if that happens on Saturday then BYU will be fishing on Monday. If both teams play like the did today on Saturday then look for a blowout win by Gonzaga.

On the side note, USU stunk as usual and SDSU looks like at least an Elite 8 team.

  • Captain L Provo, UT

I always hope the cougs win and will be disappointed if they lose but I don't see us getting past Gonzaga, Gonzaga is too tall and talented, plus they have players that can shoot the 3. Like I said, I'd love to see the cougs win but I don't see it happening. At least it wasn't a one and done year.
The only way I see the cougs winning is if they shoot the lights out and create a ton of turnovers. Hope it happens.

  • CJ Miles Dallas, TX

Come on....Gonzaga struggled in their conference. They are not that good. They have their moments but BYU is more consistent. BYU will make the Sweet 16 and then there are no promises.

San Diego State on the other hand, has an opportunity to make it to the final 4.

I don't think UNLV can get past Kansas on Sunday.

  • sammyg Springville, UT

Uteo... not sure what you're referring to in regards to my comments from last fall. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt... obviously a win is win and tonite's game had some issues.

Lots of silly fouls, an off nite on outside shooting, etc. Agree with you on the analysis, if BYU does not come with their best game then they could very well fall short.

I suspect tonite that there could of been some big dance jitters and possibly they held back a little. No excuses for getting into foul trouble though so early in the game.

The Cougars will need their 3-point machines to be hitting a good percentage or it's over.

As in every game in the dance... do or die! Go Cougars!

BYU is going to have to play much better to have a chance against the Zags. They kill St Johns on the boards.

As far as BYU - they looked tight. Not sure if it was the all the upsets they saw earlier in the day. But hopefully will feel that even if they lose it was a good season, and not be so tight. Emery was really bad - He jacked up some crazy shots.

As far as BYU game plan on defense. It was solid. Guard the 3 point line. They did that pretty well.
    They also rebounded pretty well.
Anderson had Zero rebounds - That is bad.
Collinsworth had 11 rebounds - well done You think he has a bad game and you see 4 steals and 11 rebounds but he could not make a layup.

Jimmer will need to have a all Jimmer performance.

  • SeattleUhasabballteam? Seattle, Wa
    March 18, 2011 12:34 a.m.

    @ bigutefan and wer:

Jimmer shot the ball with 3 seconds to go on the shot clock, 10 seconds to go in the game. Was he supposed to just hand the ball over to Wofford?

Overall, there were a lot of improvements, and good things to build on: namely rebounding (although Wofford is smaller than most teams in the tournament), team play, scoring in transition, and attacking the basket. Gonzaga is a tall order, but if we have the consistency on the defensive end, plus increase our shooting percentage we can win the game.

    Go Cougars!

Gonzaga had an unusually good night. BYU shot a very poor percentage. They did play good D most of the time.

BYU has to hit a high percentage of their shots to beat the Zags. That will reduce the rebounding edge.

Their guards are big. Their front line is big. Their shooting and rebounding were most impressive. They ran their offense pretty much at will.

I am not sure how Rose develops a game plan for 7 ft, 6'9", 6'7", 6'5" and 6'2" with a bench that is just as big. They were also athletic enough to play with St. Johns. However, the Big East may be over rated like last year.

Last year PHO found a way to play with LA Lakers. I am sure Rose can find a way. BUT the Cougs will have to hit their shots.

Against Wofford the right BYU players stepped up at the right time. Maybe that will continue.

Hopefully BYU will loosen up. The ZAGs were loose once they got a lead and that made it much easier for them.

Style points don't mean anything in the NCAA tournament. The only thing that matters is winning.

    Win and you advance.

The Zags look like a great team this past month, they really turned it around. Should be a good one Saturday. Hopefully BYU shoots the 3-ball better and the drives get some of the Zags' big guys in foul trouble to put them on the bench for a long spell.

Kyle and Charles need to keep rebounding like crazy. I know some of the shots were not falling, but getting those boards is going to be key to winning Saturday. And Jax is due for a 15-20 point night. Guards vs. Forwards in the NCAA tends to go for the guards much more than NBA Playoff basketball, so I am hopeful!

It's obvious that BYU fans have moved beyond the shock of losing Brandon Davies and are now firmly entrenched in a state of denial. They will bargain, get angry, and very depressed Saturday. We need to be here for them to help them get through it.

I don't know what is going on with Collinsworth, Emery, and Abouo lately, but if they don't get their heads screwed on right, and right away, BYU will not get past Gonzaga. It feels like ever since the SDSU game in San Diego, these three guys have just disappeared. Emery is clanking everything off the front of the rim but not making any adjustments. Collinsworth is playing very tentative and looks like he is asleep half the time. I did see a spark from Abouo last night, which gives me hope. C'mon guys....we know you are better than you've played the last several games.

Gonzaga looked like they were clicking on all cylinders last night. Shooting with confidence and well prepared for tournament play. We had better come motivated and prepared.

I am really disappointed to read comments that complain about Collinsworth's offensive performance and neglect the strong rebounding and exceptional defense he has played, especially since Davies has been out. This young man has played very well.

Sure we all want every shot to go in, but that is not realistic. Jimmer gets the shots and the other players have little opportunity to get into a groove. Shooters shoot and must keep shooting through the misses until they zone in on the basket.

Collinsworth and others have few opportunities to get in the zone. His primary role is defense and rebounding. He also cleans up on the offensiv end and gets a few points with put backs. That is his ROLE. He has the ability to drive and be a big scorer, but that will happen under very different circumstances - post Jimmer.

Support him in his current role and respect the fact that he is not COMPLAINING about his role and limited opportunities to score, as he no doubt would prefer.

I strongly support this team and the roles that have been defined. Here is to hoping that they play well and shoot great. That covers all sins.

Not sure what to make of the game. It seemed like Rose was hiding Jimmer for as long as he could, especially in the opening 10 minutes of the game. There were many possessions where he didn't even touch the ball. Rose is a canny coach and former player who knows how to win in the clutch, and how to conserve his team. I prefer to think he was playing chess here--giving just enough to beat the current competition while not giving up more than he needs to, to the scouts and film of the team in the next round. But I also agree that they will need to bring a different game against the Zags. They have a tradition of winning big games.

One last thought, on a completely different topic: We need to change the "cougar on the mountain" logo we have used since the MWC was formed. I propose we go back to the old cougar with a paw down from my days at school. just darken the color to match today's royal blue.

This is the NCAA tournament, every team is going to bring their best. There can only be one Champion. BYU always follows up a bad game with a great game. Hopefully this next game will follow that trend. I could see Jimmer going for another 40 point game and the supporting cast doing just what they need to do to beat Gonzaga. With Davies, I had them going to the final 4 but without him, I predicted sweet 16. Here's to hoping it's better than that.

    WA_Alum&Dad,

I have a different take on the game. Maybe the ball wasn't in Jimmer's hands as much, because he wasn't making his shots. Even he admitted in the post game interview that he was off most of the game. Look at the percentages. He missed a lot more shots than usual. Yeah, he got 32 points, but how many shots did he take to get that? I don't see how you can say he should have gotten the ball more when he already took such a huge percentage of BYU's total shots and missed so many of them. In the NCAA tournament, if you keep missing at that high a percentage somebody is going to take advantage of it. Like Gonzaga. This could be a preview of next years WCC championship game. If BYU plays like they did against Wofford, I don't think they's win it.

Way to go Cougars! You had me worried for a while. What I was most impressed with was that K. Collinsworth had 11 boards though he struggled to shoot the ball. He just needs to settle down on offense. I'm not sure how BYU will beat Gonzaga- the Zags had no trouble against St. Johns- who play a similar style to BYU and are a similar sized lineup to BYU. My guess is that BYU will have to push the pace and wear the Zags down. Big guys don't like running.

    @Mormon Ute:

You missed my point completely. I noticed from *the opening possessions* that they were running offenses without Jimmer, and I hadn't seen that all year. He hadn't shown cold, because the game had *just started.* And normally, even when Jimmer is shooting cold, he'll still handle the ball and run the offense. He wasn't even asking for or getting passes.

It didn't bother me at all. But I did notice it. I'm fine with Jimmer not going off every game. I like Jimmer just fine, but I'm no Jimmer groupie. What I am for, big time, is for the Cougars to win the game. Whoever steps up to make that happen is just fine with me, and there is nothing better than watching the Cougs hammering on all cylinders and winning big. And if Coach Rose has a bigger plan for the coming games, I'm happy to hear it.

Anyway, isn't there an article somewhere discussing who to hire for next year that you can comment on?

Good win Cougars!!! The game was a little bit closer than I would have liked but a win is a win and its great to advance. I don't see any comments from Chris B or Hedgehog. I guess their hopeful prediction of one and done didn't come about. Well onto the next round vs. Gonzaga. Make us proud and win again!!

    WA_Alum&Dad,

When the Dnews locks out everyone but BYU fans from commenting on BYU related articles, I'll stop commenting. Fans of a particular team aren't the only ones interested and it's comments like yours that increase the animosity between the two fan bases. If you are truly comfortable with your team and your position as a fan, you don't have a problem with fans of other teams making comments.

"comments like yours that increase the animosity . . . "

That's rich (and typical) coming from a Ute fan. It will be so refreshing playing league where classy coaches, players, and fans are the rule rather than the exception, and having rivalries with other schools and fans who get what being a religious school is about. Hasta la vista Ute, Cowboy, Lobo, Aztec Rebel Mountain West hater fans! Soon you'll all be just an unpleasant memory. Didn't mind playing AF or TCU CSU, but the rest I will not miss at all. I wouldn't mind if BYU never played UU again.

"Looked to me like BYU sized up their opponent and conserved their energy for the next game, doing enough to get up by 10 and coasting from there."

Legitimate 3 seeds get up by 30 and then coast in from there. How many minutes did your starters rest, by the way?

Spoken as true as it can be. There's probably not a better person to help a depressed person than a ute fan who's gone through it before. Yes, your football team was quite a disappointment wasn't it? I don't think the pharmacies have been able to restock the shelves fast enough for you depressed Utes and to add insult to your state of depression you had a basketball season to contend with.

Appreciate the compasionate offer but you see it's like this, most Cougar fans rebound pretty quickly. Your 10-3 season wasn't a losing season but the perception was different. A 30 win season and at the second round is not a losing season. Big difference, you get it?

    Win and move on?

    True.

    A 3 seed beating a 14 seed by 8 will impress few?

    Also True.

I've maintained that even in a one-loss your out tourney, BYU as the former #3 team in the country, needs to advance much farther than the second round to prove they weren't overrated.

Does the loss of Davies hurt. Of course. Ute fans will argue that losing Wynn (am him playing injured late in the season) also hurt. Teams don't get a #3 ranking unless they are stacked. A true #3 ranked team, or even a #12 ranked/3 seeded team needs to clobber first round opponents or it often bodes poorly later.

Do I have BYU in the Sweet sixteen in my bracket. Yes.
Am I having my doubts? Yes.

But that's what great about March Madness...the opportunity of being proven right or wrong.

Good luck to Jimmer and the Cougs.

Congrats Cougars on a nice win!!!...This Tournament is about survival, live to play another day and thats what BYU did. Sure it wasn't pretty, but they got it done, If you look at other games you will notice that there were not only close calls, but some big upsets as well. BYU shot 39% for the game but still pulled away in the end and led by as many as 14. Now they cant continue to shoot under 40% and win so hopefully they will find their touch tomorrow. Emery really needs to step up and start knocking down some shots. I think his shooting is key, when he and Jimmer are both on their game BYU is tough to beat.

    Go Cougars!!!
