There are already visa programs in place for workers to come to the usa
providing there are no legal workers already here to do the work. No reason UT
needs its own program and we doubt the feds are going to issue you a waiver for
you to do it with so many already out of work here.Hope you also
have a bill ready for the Gov signature to do away with the drivers card and get
with the rest of the country in not helping illegals to exist here.Stay strong lawmakers and please get the Gov to sign the bills that will help
illegals to leave the state.
This bill is completely unacceptable because it forces police to enforce the
law. State and local police should not be forced to enforce federal laws, such
as those that prohibit the sale of narcotics. Our officers have much more
important things to do, such as keeping people from crossing the double white
lines of the HOV lanes. Come to think of it, the HOV lanes are required by the
federal government, and if our police don't enforce them, the feds will take
away funding for roads. So it's particularly important now to take the focus
off immigration and put it into traffic enforcement. Sadly, I realize the state
could make millions from the thousands of undocumented workers who are clamoring
to pay $2,500 each for work permits. This was one document that undocumented
workers clearly want. I wonder if work permits will be available down at the
corner documents dealer at a lower price. Probably.
Utah's in for a traumatic shock, when the word gets out they are welcoming Guest
workers from some Mexican province. Hundreds of thousands will pour in from not
just South of the border, but thousands from Arizona and other illegal alien
policing states. Thousands more economic illegal nations, will start flooding
your schools, hospitals and looking for free welfare handouts.
@Casca, The bill that welcomes the workers from the Mexican province is a
different bill. HB116 grants illegals already here in Utah, and any who can
manage to get here before May 11th, with permanent guest worker status, IN
ADDITION TO the ones coming from the Mexican province.
Illegals protesting? They have human rights, but they dont have the rights here
of a us citizen. They also have the right to go home.
Anti: You do know UT has no authority to issue worker permits to illegals? and
the bill allowing them from the one Mexican province ties in with the federal
system?UT would need a waiver as we already said to do the
former.Casca is right in that UT will be flooded as this is truly a
stupid idea since it adds incentives for illegals to come while other states are
making it harder for them to exist in their states.
Illegal aliens are criminals and parasites, one and all. Practically everything
they do on U.S. soil is illegal. They need to be ferreted out, rounded up like
cattle, punished for their numerous crimes, then booted back to whence they
snuck in from with such extreme prejudice that they will never, ever think of
violating our sovereignty again. Enough is enough.
When do we taxpaying citizens get to protest about the huge drain on resources
created by illegals? The bills passed by the Legislature this session
already give far too much amnesty and benefits to illegals, so I cannot see that
they have any grounds to protest. But, some people are never satisfied with
what they get from others.
In 1953 the US Supreme court ruled that immigrants did not have the rights as
described in the US Constitution until they were in this country legally. Kwong
Hai Chew v. Colding Template:344 U.S. 590, 596. That has not been changed to
date. You are a criminal in Mexico and subject to a long jail sentence and then
deportation if you enter that country illegally. Keep that in mind.
I agree with jimI of West Jordan.
Cracks me up. To all you folks up their in Utah, as I feel the wind in my hair
from the masses of Mexicans whooshing North to Utah as They are Moving On Up
:)Man, that will sure make things simpler here in AZ. We could even open
up concession stands to make their journey more special. Thanks Utah.
the group United for Social Justice urging people to call for a veto of the
enforcement of businesses being penalized for employing illegals are a joke. Is
it "just" for such businesses to get away with paying for cheaper
labor while other businesses employing legal immigrants and citizens are
following the law? How about we let them also operate their business without a
license or without having to pass health inspections? I know these are extremes
but the principle is the same.
Illegals are ILLEGAL! Period. They are NOT Citizens are should NOT have ANY say
on the issue. ILLEGAL mean against or breaking the Law! How is it justified?
Come LEGALLY and follow the laws if you really Love this country.
Like the Irish and the Italians and the Jews and the Chinese who came here for a
better life, worked their fingers to the bone, enriched this country, and made
it their own, our neighbors to the south are no different. They are
here, they're not going anywhere, and rather than indulging in round 'em up and
ship 'em out fantasies, I suggest you xenophobes put down your torches and
welcome them. We badly need immigration reform. We need to fast track these
good and decent people on a path to citizenship so that they can start paying
income tax!Once they are paying into the system like you and I are,
what excuse will you use for your bigotry? You are drastically to the
far right of your own Church on this!
Compassionate behavior that is appropriate for groups or individuals ("love
thy neighbor") is not necessarily appropriate for a government that has
responsibility for the safety and security of its citizens. Immigrants from Mexico are particularly hypocritical in calling for lenient
laws when their home government is extremely strict on immigrants.
It seems that the legislature was so concerned about pleasing everyone that they
have succeeded in pleasing no one. We can't just enforce the law because that's
not compassionate enough so we have to roll out the welcome mat for anyone that
wants to come here illegally. With all the concessions to the illegal immigrants
in this bill I'm surprised they have the audacity to rally against it. What they
really want is for there to be no consequences to their illegal behaviors. We
are expected to look the other way and allow them to do as they please. I loved
the bit about Utah doing "ugly" things to them. Well if that is true,
they are certainly free to leave.
Immigrants rights? Why should illegal immigrants have any rights? Sheesh.
The first shall be last and the last shall be first. Maybe it's time for those
that were forced out to reclaim what was stolen from their forefathers so
decades ago. The native "Indians" of the Americas are taking back the
lands of their inheritance. This is prophecy in the making.
I think they had a protest organized, and decided to throw it anyway. The bills passed copied current laws already in effect. The enforcement bill
is secure communities, and the guest worker bill is the federal government
"H" visa.Do they think if they complain enough, we will
think we won? We didn't, we got nothing we didn't already have.
What I find so frustrating is the fact that the illegal immigrant community does
not want to compromise. These bills will allow them to keep their families
together, stay in the state, and actually get paid above minimum wage because
they have a legal visa. What do they want? Sheeeesh!
Of course it is "Opposed", the gravy train might be leaving the
station. I guess I would be upset too if the country I had been victimizing all
the sudden tried to stop me. Sometimes you just have to put a band aid on an
open cut BEFORE you bleed out.
These bills are compassionate and practical, well-thought out--even Rubles was
impressed. The illegal immigrants should be happy with what they get. And they
get quite a lot of entitlements. What more could they want?Let's
keep clarifying that these are illegal immigration bills, not legal immigration
Jonathan Eddy | Maybe it's time for those that were forced out to reclaim what
was stolen from their forefathers so decades ago. The native "Indians"
of the Americas are taking back the lands of their inheritance. This is prophecy
in the making. How bogus a statement you make. Which native
americans were forced out of the country? None. That means the illegals coming
from southern countries are still invaders. As far as the indians of the
americas taking back the lands of their inheritance, I believe you are talking
about Utah, none of the tribes here in this state were here 1,500 years ago.
Some invaded Utah within the last 500 years.
I live on the Utah/Colorado border and I witnessed the results of these bills
already. Three large vehicles loaded down with illegals or latinos were heading
to Utah from Oklahoma on hwy 40. They stopped for gas and none of them spoke
very good English. Is this profiling? You betcha. If it looks like a duck and
quacks like a duck it probably is a duck. Utah is going to be over run with
illegals before the deadline of May 2011.
The gall of these people! They have no rights! They are not US Citizens! They
need to be doing this in Mexico.
If there is a list of illegals maintained by the State, then I would certainly
hope that a few patriotic Utahns make that list available to, oh, ICE. That
would definitely be a defense fund I would contribute to. Definitely beats
leaks to Wikileaks.

7:50 p.m.There is a BIG difference - the Irish, Italians and Jews
entered legally through Ellis Island. The Chinese through the port of San
Francisco. Those immigrants did not sneak across a border and purposely work to
evade and break U.S. laws.
What makes anyone think that once they have cards allowing them to stay in the
state they will stop breaking laws. Just this week the police found 6 people
running a false id ring. The police probably checked to make sure
they had worker papers from Utah then turned them loose again. In order to go
to jail you have to be from this country then break the law. Other countries do
not have to obey US law, they just have uprisings here and call it a rally.I think they are currently have a rally in Libya as well.
we are encouraging more people here with a May 11th deadline. Might as well
offer free food, drinks and gas. I have to question why we not limit it to
people in the state on a past day. That was an insult to those here illegally,
and to this countries citizens. On top of that, this law will be
tied up in court for years. So all those people will stay for months, even
years. Not wanting to return home, waiting for the amnesty. This is
a ploy to lure people here illegally, and to keep them here against the law,
working in our business illegally, and filling the pockets of business.

different."I'm sorry but you are dead wrong. The vast majority
of Illegal Immigrants in Utah are here for one thing only and that is to make
money. There loyalty is to Mexico. They send as much as they can back to
Mexico. Its a big part of the mexican economy. They have have very little
desire or incentive to ever become actual citizens. Do you really think they
want to start paying income tax? Why would they? Funny you left
out the fact that the aforementioned groups came to this country legally. While your at it, spare us your name calling, others have done it ad
nauseum, we know we're not bigots as we love legal immigrants and welcome them
with open arms. You know your losing the argument when you have to resort to
name calling and shame tactics.
These new laws are exactly what the illegals foreign national Mexicans have been
wanting, but the $2500 fee to get a permit is what they are whining about. They
have bilked the Utah tax payers out of billions of dollars in freebies and they
are upset that a fee/fine has been imposed on illegals for a get out of jail
free card.I think the state already has it planned to waive all the
fees and fines. Its not like Utah to make any illegal Mexican pay any cost of
supporting them. As governmnet employees they are paid through welfare job as a
non resident state employee. A job any citizens would envy, $3,000/mo food
stamps, free rent, free health care, free utilities, free education and tuition,
and if they can find one, include a tax free income job. If they make $10/hr,
their take home is $10/hr with no tax or other employee deductions. The citizens
pay 40% of their income ($4/hr of the same $10) to taxes and retirements, SSA,
Medicare, Medicaid, etc. From the business stand point, owners pocket
that 40% they may hold out of an illegals check.
Nothing was really done. An enforcement program that copied the "secure
communities" program that 55% of the state is already using, and a guest
worker bill that uses the Federal government's "H" visa that has been
available for years. Remember how many bills were shot down because
they were to expensive, and forced police to work? Well we passed the most
expensive one of them. A guest worker program that just sent a big message to
the people in Mexico to come here and work. It's going to be run by our police
departments (the people to busy for enforcement), and will end up in court, as
everyone has told them, it's unconstitutional. It will result in people coming
here and camping out for the decision. It's a good thing it probably won't pass.
I would head to the state capitol, and tell them next time you give away
American jobs, make it your own.
Immigration reform is needed, either be here legally or reform and go home.
A total misrepresentation of the bill. There are no stiff enforcement
measures, unless you think "encouraging" the use of E-verify and
"allowing" immigration screening upon arrest as tough enforcement. And gratefully the guest worker program won't pass the court test. This

The bill is not pleasing to anyone. Nothing short of amnesty will please the

application process for quick, easy, and cheap guest worker programs that will
allow millions to come here legally to work, not to become citizens, but they
have to apply from their own country. DON'T LET THEM GET IT FROM HERE!At the same time make it far more difficult to be here illegally. Clamp down
on employers that hire illegals, check the immigration status of everyone
arrested or stopped for traffic violations, not just latinos. No free medical
care, education, or citizenship for children born to illegals here. No benefits
or rights unless you are here legally. These two steps would cause
millions to leave and come back legally. Those who don't will be sorry because
it will be far more difficult for them to be here. Make it easier

What exactly are these guys trying to prove? Other than irritating everyone to
the point that they want to throw them out personally, little was accomplished
by this nonsense. What you have here is a group of criminal invaders acting as
if their opinion matters to someone other than their own group. (it doesn't).
Legal "immigrants" already have rights, illegals don't have any rights
and aren't going to get any. March on back to Mexico and take Robles, Anderson,
and Yapias with you. Every time I see this baloney it strengthens my resolve to
demand my elected representatives do more to enforce the law and throw them all
out. As for the "guest worker" programs, I can't believe
everyone can't see what is really happening here. The illegals have been clearly
out politic'd without even knowing it. The politicians passed it knowing full
well it will be struck down and trumped by federal law, it is illegal and will
never happen. Now Robles and others can all say they pushed the program through.
Big Deception. This part of it all is nothing but smoke and mirrors.
We need more legal workers and more legal permanent residents. People build
prosperity. Quit thinking we should be so exclusive. If we increase quotas to
meet demand, there will be a natural balance point in the supply and demand for
labor. Then both sides of the border will benefit. The future belongs to those
who share and cooperate, not the hoarders.
'Immigrants' rights supporters rally against 'Utah solution'"shame on Sandstrom"! I agree with the shame part but it
is shame on illegals who thumb their noses at our laws and then protest when
Americans say we are going to enforce our laws. There are LOTS of Utah citizens
that are mad at our represenatives for passing a guest worker program but to
have illegals protest any laws we have passed is reprehensible even shameful. What right do they think they have to protest any law in the US. They
have already shown what they think of our laws by coming here.Shame
one day..., The average person here illegally makes $11,000 per year (PEW).
That's not enough to pay taxes if someone has a child. Maybe the $500 minimum.
The "jobs you would not do" is a lie, taught to people who
come here illegally to give as an excuse by business owners and pro-illegal
organizations. We know different, and we also know that there are agriculture
visas available. People are told that as a defense, a way for these groups to
keep them here. A justification for their staying. They tell you you are needed.
They are lying and using you.
Speaking from the 3rd world of southern California, I sugguest you make every
effort to curb illegal immigration to Utah. If you want to see what happens
when you don't, give us a visit. Just be careful where you go.

Illegal immigrants are again crowding the streets protesting even the modicum of
restrictions our amnesty-leaning legislature are considering, while Mexico builds
a southern wall. The question, notwithstanding the alleged 'conservative'
Sutherland Institute and the progressive police chief Chris Burbank, is this:
how many illegal immigrants are Utah taxpayers willing to subsidize? One hundred
ten thousand? Two hundred thousand? More? With Utah burgeoning reputation
as an amnesty state (drivers privilege card, in-state tuition rates, Federal and
state living assistance, no effective jobs verification) we can most assuredly
expect more-much more. Arizona's loss is now our loss.
If citizens are asked to have compassion on illegal activity then what is being
asked of illegal immigrants in terms of obedience of the laws of the land?
My original comment was denied because I suppose my sarcasm wasn't appreciated.
So I will calmly say, with Utah's unbelievable bill, the Mexican's are going to
flood your way. And you Deseret News folks will get a taste of what Arizona
has been dealing with for decades. Is this a kinder, gentler message???
In the next five days, they need to tear the E-Verify from the guest worker bill
and let it stand on it's own. I guess they think their constituents are dumb
enough not to figure out that when the guest worker bill is killed as
unconstitutional, E-verify will be killed also. The guest worker
bill is an attack on our countries constitution. You can't give people American
jobs unless you prove Americans won't work them. It's the law, and taking away a
citizens right to feed and house his family is a travesty. Arizona
put it's citizens first, Utah put it's business first. Right now I am not to
proud of Utah. The business lobby only cares about the bottom line, not the
future. What kind of country are we leaving our children? Are they better off
than 25 years ago? immigration legal yes, illegal immigration is a crime.
@JBrady: "You can't give people American jobs unless you prove Americans
won't work them."Americans will take any job if the wages are
there. But wages are being driven down by immigrant labor. They are willing to
take any job at any wage. It is much better than they can get in Mexico. And even with reduced wages driven down by immigrant labor, Americans
will take any job if their unemployment benefits run out and they need money to
put food on the table and pay the rent. But, will the government cut
unemployment benefits? Not likely. Unemployment benefits have been extended
several time to now 99 weeks... almost two years. Why take a job that pays less
than what you can make on unemployment sitting on your couch in the living room.
What needs to happen is the government to cut unemployment and force people
back to work.
This is not merely an amnesty for illegals currently here or who will be here by
May 11, 2011, but also a RETROACTIVE amnesty for virtually anyone who has EVER,
EVER lived or worked in Utah at any time in their lifetimes. What this means is
that Utah WILL become the illegal-alien vortex of all of North America. This is
what Bramble got away with (very much with the approval of Luz Robles, of
The government won't cut them off. They are being bought off to stop
complainants about the illegal immigrants working. If we cut off unemployment,
lazy business owners would need to pay fair wages, or be turned in for hiring
illegal help. That would put many here illegally out of a job, and
they would return home. We are spending billions each year in unemployment
subsidies to maintain a labor pool for business. We really need the
unions back. Government has become worthless standing up for the citizens.

How can Sandstroms bill be to expensive, because it uses law enforcement, but
the guest worker program is OK. The cost was an excuse to the citizens, wasn't
it? Senator Wrights bill is irresponsible. There is no reason to tie
up laws in a court case, the governor needs to reject this one. I think it's
just a two year time out anyway. Get rid of the drivers permit that
does nothing, and mandatory E-Verify for everyone. Utah's citizens should insist
on the E-verify. Come on legislature, you went with a purpose, and
states around us have shown their resolve, our senate has weak knees.
In Senator Wrights bill, he forgot to mention how we deal with the rest of the
110,000 people here illegally, there are no jobs for? And how about
all those coming for the May cutoff date? Should we show them where the town of
Holden is located? Those are human lives your playing with. People see it's open
season on guest worker passes, and many more will come here. (we can't handle
what we have now) Many will find no jobs, and our social services will be taxed.
People are going to starve, cars break down, etc. only to be turned away. What

clarification for those of you who don't understand; illegals commonly will use
their stolen SS # to obtain employment. Then at the end of the year they WILL
file a tax return in order to qualify for EIC (earned income credit). They
usually file "exempt" or 12 exemptions on their tax withholding (w-4).
When the check arrives in the mail from the IRS for the EIC, they usually move,
or switch to a new "identity". So no, they DON'T PAY ANY federal
taxes, and they pay VERY LITTLE sales tax because most of them receive WIC, food
stamps, welfare, etc. They are very adept at "gaming the
Any so-called solution that does not a)regulate and restrict the future flow of
illegals into Utah, b) has a negative consequence for the illegals already here
for breaking the law, and c) protects Utah from the fiscal burden of 'hosting'
illegals here is not a solution. Other than potential federal deportation,
there is no disincentive for illegals to not want to come to Utah. Any
legislative solution must address this issue if the policies enacted are to be
effective. The current proposal is on the right track in many respects...but
it's not good enough yet.
I say it's about time that the state take the bull by the horn. They shouldn't
take and give anything to the people who are not in this county legally. Maybe
the state of Utah should follow the way of AZ. and use the Law Enforcement
Officer to help enforce the Law.
Remember, anytime any of us are pulled over, our car license and drivers license
are hit against databases searching for potential criminal activity on record
and warrants. Not verifying citizenship status could be a form of "reverse
discrimination," as non-citizens would be getting favorable treatment by
having their crimes hidden.
Once again, the people who voted these "representatives" have been
sold down the river for the greedy businesses and the LA RAZA (the race)
activists. Can someone explain to me a legitimate reason why we need a
"guest worker" program when we have record high unemployment? And why
would we only allow these guest workers to be from mexico? I know of too many
teenagers who are trying to find jobs but can't do so because these entry level
jobs that used to be filled by our teens are now being filled by illegals, and
many of them are being paid under the table. If we are to leave our
children behind a decent place to live, then we need to make our voices heard to
the governor NOT to sign this bill that would turn Utah into a bankrupt
California. By enacting this amnesty bill, our state is saying to the rest of
the world that we welcome illegals here, and we will be opening the floodgates
to Utah all of the illegals who are fleeing Arizona. I swear, our politicians
are becoming as corrupt as mexico's. It's time to vote all the bums out.
If Rocky Whino Anderson is on the other side of this issue.....I am confident I

immigrants from their jobs and neighborhoods? Will they see the change as
progress or regret their silence and inaction? We don't have to just sit and
take this unlawful change. It is not wrong or immoral to enforce our laws and
protect our borders. As an American it's your privilege and your duty. Tolerance
is not complacency.
Christy. I find it ironic that you are from Oregon and yet make such a big fuss
over Utah immigration laws and policies. If you want to make it easier for
illegals to come to your state, be our(utah citizens) guest. As
others have stated, the immigrants you talked about came here through the
approved channels, and they did not arrive with a sense of entitlement. So your
comparision between the illegal immigrants of today with the legal immigrants to
this country over a hundred years ago, is not valid. While there are
many illegals who come here and do not commit crime other than entering a
soverin nation illegally, there are many serious criminals coming in to this
country as illegal immigrants who leave countless victims in their wake from
things such as indentity theft, gangs, prostitution, drug trafficking, theft,
burglary and last but not least sex offenses. It is estimated that illegals
commit over 130,000 sex offences each year. I suggest you look up ICE' operation
preditor and Operation Cold Play. Our children and our law abiding
citizens deserve to be protected from the scourge of crime brought to this
nation by illegal immigrants.
I agree with part of the "Utah solution" because a guest worker
program would be the first step in the right direction for an immigration
reform. I am angered by the fact that supporters of illegal immigrant rights
are against these new bills. I don't understand why they oppose a guest worker
program. If a guest worker program was implemented in the whole United States
then the number of illegal immigrants would decrease. Although the number wold
decrease, there still would be a problem with illegal immigration. The fact is
that until the root of the problem is addressed, there will never be a sensible
solution. These groups that support an immigration reform should be protesting
to the government of Mexico and other countries where the illegal immigrants
Can you say Special Interests? Have our lawmakers forgotten last November?
Onceagain are representitives choose to ignor their constituents, avoid
enforcinglaws already in place and attempt to make being here illegally
pain free. Mediareports "Latinos Increase 78% in last ten years. This
is an invasion that takes jobs, lowers our standard of living and increases
untold costs for tax payer funded services. Every lawmaker that betrays legal
Utah citizens for thebenefit of business and illegal immigrants needs to
be booted out of office. This includes the fence sitting govenor.
Maybe if these people learned english they would understand the bill. It's
illegals that they are wanting to send home. Not legal immigrants. Illegals
have zero rights in this nation. They don't belong. When you break the law, your
freedome and "rights" are very limited. Same thing with being
illegal. Now go home to your country. Speak your language and wave
your flag there. If you want to live here, then apply legally and learn english
and fly the US flag. It's that simple.Should legal
immigration be made easier? I think so. But illegals should not be given amnesty
or free passes for breaking our laws.Who would Jesus deport? He
would deport illegals. Who is Jesus not going to bring through his gate? People
that broke the rules.Who is Pedro going to steal identity from? A
newborn child? An elderly person? A hardworking family?
Obey, uphold, and respect the laws of land. That's all decent law abiding
citizens of this great land are asking. If you can't agree with that, then you
don't belong here.
15 million+ unemployed Americans, 10 million employed illegal immigrants.
Interesting. Besides, this is not about immigrants, it's about illegal
immigrants. This is not like the immigrants that helped build America. This is
about one ethnic group wanting to monopolize immigration to themselves.
This bill will hurt Utah in the long run. We are a country where the rule of law
stands. This bill just goes to show that the business sector is wanting the
illegals here so that they can be hired and take jobs away from Utahns. Illegals
are breaking the law...that is the fact! In this economic time, this bill is not
the answer! People need the jobs that the illegals are taking and please don't
use the farm excuse! There are other jobs that they are taking...i.e.,
construction, manufacture, custodial, transportation, shipping and etc. The list
is ongoing! Force the reperesentatives to recall this bill and pass a bill that
will strip the illegals of all rights to Medicaid, Medicare, SSI, and Food
Stamps! Take away free education of children of illegals! Charity starts at
home...let us take care of the Citizens of the State of Utah first!
If Rocky Anderson is against something, that is enough for me to want to be
against it... and visa versa. Very similar to how I feel about the ACLU. Rocky
was one of the most controversial politicians in Utah history, and continues to
seek attention wherever and whenever he can find it. Since he is officially (and
thankfully) no longer in politics, it's surprising the reporter would even
mention he was a part of this smallish rally... or anything else. To Christy from Oregon: Instead of lecturing Utah about your personal
principles, you would be better off spending your time trying to change your own
home state laws to make it more "compassionate" to illegals. Then we
could just forward on all the would-be amnesty seekers right on up to you in
