Could Heaps achieve Fredette level hype?

Sure..... but just like Jimmer, Heaps will likely never achieve any meaningful post season success.

I just never stops does it.

What is the tds obsession with being accepted? The endless day dreaming about epic grandeur is nothing more than delusion.

Just imagine if the tds was invited into the Conference of Champions and not the Utes. I could only imagine the maniacal, self love articles.

    It's sad really.

Can heaps achieve average qb status?

  • --JEFFE-- Cedar City, UT

    Hedgehog,

Whats really sad is a person almost 2,000 miles away constantly and obsessively tracking a school he claims to hate. Than there is the fact that he has nothing better to do than spew negativity and false information. The painful truth is, you dedicate way too much time typing hateful and delusional comments on a paper 2,000 miles away from where you live.
    Pathetic

In the future you should try your hardest to present accurate, meaningful material for discussion. Hateful comments just make you look like a little person.

Can we just let the guys plan without heaping (pardon the pun) enormous expectations on them before they even accomplish anything? Fredette seems to be handling it OK but the team obviously did not in the defeat - although give UNM credit.

In my opinion lots of publicity is never a good thing until something is won and done. Let the team advance a little in the finals before putting them on the stage. Let Heaps lead them to the BCS before saying he should be a Heisman candidate - which is what you are saying when you say he could reach Jimmer status.

"Let Heaps lead them to the BCS before saying he should be a Heisman candidate - which is what you are saying when you say he could reach Jimmer status"

    localblue,

Not a good comparison. Jimmer lead his team to a field of 62. If he had gotten them to the Elite Eight than I would use the BCS comparison for heaps.

As it stands now - Jimmer can shoot the ball really good...nothing more.

  • BlueSaint South Jordan, UT

I'm sure the Utes would have someone to gush all over about, but they never get the best athletes, so they hate on elite programs that do!...Sad really!

  • Billy Bob Provo, UT

As a BYU fan but a realist, I will try to be realistic about it. No, Heaps will not reach Jimmer status. Don't get me wrong, I think Heaps will be good. Optimistically, he may even lead BYU to a BCS game. But he will never have the hype Jimmer has. And he will never be considered for the top award in College Football, or at least not win it (and rightfully so). However, with all that said, I am excited for the next few football seasons with Heaps, just as I am excited to see how far Jimmer can bring BYU in the NCAA Tournament. Go Cougars!

Although I agree that this is really pre-mature, I am so totally sick of the 3-4 perennial haters who pop up on this board (we all know their names) to trash any and every article on BYU.

Interesting article in a recent Bleacher Report that noted the Fifty all-time greatest football programs-which the usual suspects leading the way to include: Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, USC, et al. What was most intriguing was that BYU was listed at # 20 all-time most influential program while the Utes were nowhere to be found in the top 50. As a life-long Cougar, I applaud our friends to the north for their very recent success, but I suspect that it will be a very long time before Utah is noted for memebership among the elite programs. Gentlemen (and Chrisie, please cease the hate. It is not very becoming or civil.

Oh the loser Ute Trolls are off their medications again.

It ain't braggin if you do it or have done it.

    You see Ute trolls....

    BYU already has...In Football

    A National Championship

(by 5 Seperate Organizations, Waterford Chrystal Ball and all)

    A Heisman Trophy

    Two Outland trophies

    Four Davey O'Brien trophies

    Seven Sammy Baugh Trophies

    NFL MVP's

    Super Bowl champions w/winning QB's

    7 Hall of Famers

    16 consensus All-americans 60+ all told

And ESPN at it's back. U've got a Conference that won't fully share with you for 5 years.

Danny Ainge already won POY with the Wooden and Eastman.

It's not likely Heap's ever reaches Jimmers status, but those who were here with Detmer, saw something close, but even that did not measure up to Jimmermania.

His name will forever be mentionsed when incredible shots are made or when a team gets lit up.

It's a lasting thing, a new phrase has been coined a new cliche has been born, not many people will ever have that distinction.

Read it and weep uties read it and weep.

BYU has to win to keep this TV deal and I promise you they won't. You are biting odd more than you can chew. i even read an article by some BYU writer stating BYU is the Duke U. of the west ???? Are you serious?

So Howard S. You would rather be in the PAC12 but you really didn't finish your sentence. You should have finished it with I'd rather be in the PAC12 and finish in the bottom of the pack than have all the trophy's and accomplishments that BYU has had and will have.

Face it u fans, you will always be the little brothers and dream of being like your big brothers at the Y. Keep dreaming....it will never happen.

    re: Howard S.
BCS bowl wins, as nice as they are, are afterall just bowl wins. A BCS bowl win from 2005 or 2008 is not a national championship.
Do you remember who won the 2001 Fiesta?.......(Oregon)
So why should we care who won the 2005 (or 2007) Fiesta? (Certainly fun games to watch.)

A fiesta bowl trophy is nice, but it's not a NC trophy. So, as long as college FB fans are content with just going to a BCS bowl game, then the BCS system won't change.
What the Utes should want, is not a BCS appearance, or a BCS win. Rather, they should want what BYU has (and wants again) a National Championship.

  • Bluto Sandy, UT
    Jan. 31, 2011 7:26 a.m.

    @Howard S.

ESPN "is" banking on "BYU's Brand", they won't be paying millions to televise BYU's "Past" but rather, BYU's "Present and Future".

Why? Because their reputation proceeds them. Their Legacy Status is already established.

Utah would have to match BYU's achievements over the last 40 years, and then establish a National fanbase, before the Utes could even be mentioned in the same breath as BYU. You and I both know, that is never going to happen.

No Howie, BYU fans would not trade National TV, every game, Football and Basketball, controlling their Own Brand, making more money, and having more Access and Exposure......for your "Land of Obscurity in the Household of Washington State".

You enjoy your mid-major status within your own Conference and then make sure you tune in to "All" of BYU's Nationally televised games and good luck finding Utah on any National broadcast.

Even Colorado is receiving more $$$ than Utah, Colorado? Colorado?

What worries U, is recruits will notice this, and your recruiting will echo Wazu's, in very short order.

Now leave us be, while we negotiate another 2 million dollar game at Jerry's World.

hedgehog, did you even read the article? Maybe you don't know how to read? This article has nothing to do with being accepted.

This article's sole focus is with the love of the media and fans towards Jimmer. And soon to be Jake. Does it bother you that "the tds" is getting all the attention and you're acting out like a two year old who is being ignored?

Or maybe you don't understand the power of the media. ESPN's coverage of Boise State has made them what they are. BSU will wilt into "just another non-BCS" team now that they are on The Mtn.

Legacy status is for has beens. Army has a legacy. Navy has a legacy. Neither have a place in the modern landscape of major college football.

    And neither does BYU

Legacy can't get BYU to a BCS game. Legacy can't get BYU invited to a major conference.

The only thing legacy has done for BYU is to secure them a few weeknight games on ESPN.

Just imagine if the TUN was NATIONALLY RELEVANT and not the Cougars. I could only imagine the maniacal, self love articles.

Get used to the hype "No Class Crew". If you think Jimmermania is sweeping the nation wait until ESPN is covering BYU football games with several other nationally prominent teams every year. They will get bigger and bigger and will feed off success of getting better each year. Your obsession will spiral out of control.

Heaps will get more media attention then Jimmer if he and the team achieve football greatness as follows:

    1. Go undefeated the next 3 years
    2. Win the Heisman his Jr or Sr year
    3. Be the number 1 draft choice

These are not likely but as long as we are speculating might as well go big.

Lets take a look a Heap's so far, hum did not beat a single team last year that was ranked higher then 46th place Opp's sorry LOST to USU in a laugher, Oh by the way, USU is ranked sub 100, just sayin.

Now these teams that Heaps powered over all finished at the bottom of there conferences, just sayin.

But to be fair I must point out the Washington Victory, you remember, the game that started off the fabulous year, Oh yeah Riley Nelson scored all the TD's and Heap's one field Goal.

Lets not all get caught up in Heaps because he has not accomplished anything yet.

Jimmer is for real and Heaps is still hype.

I am a BYU fan not an over hyped Heaps fan.

It's easy to understand the frustration of the BYU-hating trolls.

Even though they pretend it isn't so, the one indisputable fact that the Utah trolls simply can't spin is that Utah's best has only ever been...

    2nd best!

    1944 - 2nd best tournament winner
    1998 - 2nd in the NCAA tournament
    2008 - #2 in the AP (#4 in Coaches)

    BYU
1984 - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS (#1 in EVERY MAJOR POLL)
    Ty Detmer - Heisman WINNER

As much as they would like to rewrite history, the record speaks for itself.

Mike come on lets slow down the spin Doctor hype-O-hypodermic needle of Hype's on Heaps he came in with plenty to spare.

You most keep it real with this kid. For starters, Heaps success's came against no one ranked higher then 46th. and lowly USU who finished in the basement of the WAC cleaned his clock.

The lone victory against Washington came with Riley Nelson scoring the touch downs and Heaps getting a FG, so to start spinning the hype machine perhaps you need to get on the reality machine.

You know you should not count your chickens before the egg's hatch, and so far the egg has simply been laid.

  • Bugoff Houston, TX
    Jan. 31, 2011 8:12 p.m.

Heaps could be as big as Jimmer but BYU would have to pull an Auburn and go undefeated.

That takes a defense, WRs and TEs which BYU currently does not have.

Dalton did pretty well with TCU and he is not even close to Jimmer.

Bball is more focused on individual play especially scorers. Football is more of a team sport.

BYU being independent and playing name teams from major conferences helps. If Utah does well in the PAC then beating them means something for a change.

IF BYU can somehow beat Texas and Ole Miss that will raise an eyebrow or two.

As weak as the PAC South is Utah should win at least 1/2 of their PAC games. Utah has more talent than BYU. BYU gets more out of their talent.

Heaps is good, time will tell if he is great.

However, he can't catch his own passes.

  • Tommy2Shoes Lehi, UT
    Jan. 31, 2011 9:36 p.m.

Jimmer's freshman year wasn't anything spectacular. He worked hard every year and has become the player he is now. Heaps can work hard at QB and be even bigger. QBs are the MVPs almost every time. When all the dust is settled Heaps will determine his own future if he has what it takes. Hard work is what is needed. Heaps is a very hard worker just like Jimmer. The same naysayers about Heaps used to do the same to Jimmer only now they cast doubts on his ability to be a good pro. Work hard Jimmer.

I wouldn't expect the usual suspects on the board to think much of Jake Heaps, but for those of us who care about our own team more that someone else's, let it be said that Jake is going to be a very good quarterback, maybe a great one. BYU's schedule and national exposure should showcase his talents. But, that said, Jimmer is a phenomenon that comes along once in a lifetime. It isn't just the name, the looks, the "cool," the shooter's touch, the paralyzing cross-over, the life story. He might not even make it in the NBA (bet he does), but there might never be another college player quite like him. I took my grandson to see him play just so he could tell his grandson some daythat he did. Hope we can say the same about Jake!
