This is an article about money and the festival. I had NO IDEA this was the case
from the headline. In fact, I don't think the headline says anything at all. I
guess Sundance drew me in but just barely.
$$, I agree with NotSoFast, really, that was my impression about the money it
made for Park City. Even though this is a Utah based event, no
locals have any advantage to be attendees, nor are encouraged--to my knowledge.
It is an elitist kind of event and more or less Red Carpet type
attendees.It might as well be held on Mars for all the awareness of
the local following.
While this may be viewed as an elitist event, and has done nothing to shed this
perception, I don't find it to be a bad thing. Utah government funding of
programs, I believe, depends in large part on the revenue of tourism. Sundance
brings people to Utah, exposes people to some of the wonderful things we have to
offer that they may not notice otherwise. I see this as a way to showcase
things of Utah to those outside so they can see it is worthwhile to spend their
money here. I don't mind not going or even being invited, necessarily.
