U. scientists say cold from ice balls will provide summer air conditioning

    The technology may be new but the concept is not. Each winter my father would go with his brothers out and harvest blocks of ice on Utah Lake and store them under a sawdust blanket in the basement of their Pleasant Grove home for summer use in their ice box. With several wagon loads stored away, they had enough to last until the following winter.

    I hope they've considered ground heave or they'll be replacing pavements, sidewalks, underground utilities, and foundations. Hopefully, they've consulted with a geotechnical engineer as engineering of structures in perma-frost areas is very difficult.
