Don't hate Utes and Cougs. Utah and BYU fans are not that much different, we all have something in common - all of us applied to BYU. Love, peace and pursuit of happiness ;)

    Get ready for the RUMBLE!

Always a pleasure to watch and usually a nail biter.

Go UTES! Lay the wood on 'em!

TO BYU AND THEIR FANS! ...

"Harry! Come fix this TV! It must be broken. It keeps showing the same play over and over again.

    A Hall interception.

And is that the UTE fight song I hear? Have they scored on us again?!

I thought we were ranked higher? Isn't the higher ranked home team always supposed to win?"

The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. All the rest of the build-up and trash talking is moronic. This is going to be good.

  • Val
    Nov. 22, 2009 9:07 p.m.

I love BYU football. They are both great teams. There is always lots of trash talk back and forth. But when it comes right down to it. They both play very well. The team with the most experiences QB usually wins the contest........I know that Max Hall is one of the nations best QB.....and will go high in the draft.........Good luck Max and Cougs.

  • COUGAR

    BYU owns UTAH!

  • Max Hall
    Nov. 22, 2009 9:36 p.m.

He is a good qb for laying putting up good numbers against horrible teams.
He doesn't do too well in big games.
Really, Val, you think someone will draft him in the first 3 rounds?

  • Val
    Nov. 22, 2009 10:22 p.m.

was talking about the CFL draft.

  • The Boot!
    Nov. 22, 2009 11:04 p.m.

Who ever wins Saturdays game will also win the BOOT!!

By the way, coach Whit is a great as a defensive coordinator as you can find but..... has no skills as a head coach.

Until he is gone, we are not returning to the BCS.

He's way too predictable and can't lead.

Game will be close, but I give the edge to Utah!

  • RE: Max Hall
    Nov. 22, 2009 11:56 p.m.

And Jordan Wyn is that much better? He has been putting up big numbers against New Mexico and San Diego State?! The only important game he has played in he got beat by 27 points!

Freshman QB or Max Hall?! I will take Max any day!

    BYU wins by 14+

    Go Cougars!

PS: Vegas odds have BYU by 7.5 points! Just FYI.

Until he's gone, we won't return to the BCS? He brought us there once, and has been bringing in great recruits. Watch Jordan Wynn. He's a great QB, and he'll be maturing greatly this offseason. He's already made great strides in the few games that he's played. Maybe if you unzip that Ute-suit we'll find a cougar underneath....

Watch the demeanor of the coaches on the sidelines.... football is a game of passion and generally speaking the more intense and fired team wins. Teams also take the personality of their coach. Bronco= quiet non-emotional thus you can see the lack of intensity. Whittingham= fiery competitor that expresses his emotions to his and they follow... Utah has not been that great this year but they find a way to win because they BELIEVE they will win and they play with EMOTION this comes from their coach... sorry until Bronco quits being boring and soft spoken and shows some emotion the TDS will never break 10-3

  • Comparisons
    Nov. 23, 2009 4:44 a.m.

I don't think it is much of an argument to say you would take Max Hall vs. a freshman QB. In fact, that may be the only time I would take him. Someone please come up with a stat line for his games against top 25 teams. Someone, anyone, post it! He will NOT be drafted on the first day. No way. I have seen the way Bronco coaches and he does not prepare the cougars for this game. That is why it is either a blow out, or the cougs pull it out in the last minute. No miracle this year!

I think negative comments about either Coach Whittingham or Coach Mendenhall are not well placed. They are both class acts and have done amazing things with their respective programs and have brought great recognition to the MWC along with TCU. If things continue as they have, adding in Air Force, the MWC will be a force to be reckoned with across the country. You can thank the BYU and Utah Coaches for getting us there.

Should be a great game. Best of luck to both Schools. Have fun with it and enjoy the moment.

He brought Utes back to BCS in 2008 --that is something that little brothers down south are still dreaming and chasing
    Just remember:

    Tier-1: Utah, TCU (BCS gamers)
    Tier-2: AFA, BYU (BCS dreamers/chasers)

Why would you want a coach in Tier-1 gone --unless you have a mind of a 3rd grader?

I AM A UTAH MAN and I think BYU will win this year. It is painful to admit, but BYU is just the better team and has been all year. I wish we had Bronco as our coach. I just do not think Whittingham is the coach that helps the program over the long haul. He has made a living on Urban's residual. Urban's players are gone and you can see slipping in the Utes play. I expect the Utes to have an even worse year next year. Sorry but it is just the plain truth.

  • RE: CPT Mike
    Nov. 23, 2009 7:36 a.m.

It must have been Lavelle Edwards "fiery demeaner" that won BYU its national title and many conference titles. Man that guy would get fired up on the sidelines. One time I think I even saw his frown shift slightly, but I couldn't tell for sure.

  • Cool

  • If BYU doesn't win Saturday...
    Nov. 23, 2009 7:56 a.m.

Could be a while before they get a win over Utah. Not happening next year with either Heaps/Nelson and nobody back on offense against Wynn, and when Wynn is a junior and senior, could get ugly for the Cougs.

Max better not implode this time around.

  • re: VC
    Nov. 23, 2009 7:58 a.m.

It's a good thing Harline and Collie got open on miracle plays. Otherwise Utah would be sporting a 7 game win streak versus BYU.

As for last years game, I wish I had a short quote reguarding Utah winning in the last moments, but it's hard to find one in a 24 point blowout.

48-24. Right now, that's all that matters until Saturday.

  • Who owns who?

  • BYU WINS!!!
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:43 a.m.

It's summertime in Utah and pigs fly... So sad the Cougar faithful have fairytale delusions. Getting back to REALITY. Max Hall will wilt under the pressure of Robert Johnson. REALITY he hasn't won the BIG GAME and don't bring up OK because the Bingham Miners could beat OK. Harvey Unga will run all over the UTES. REALITY UTAH like TCU will let UNGA run all afternoon if thats what you want to do in the 3rd quarter down by three TD's. I know the only reality for the Cougars will be the FINAL score on saturday and there will still be some that won't wrap their heads around another BYU HOME FIELD BLOWOUT. Thats gotta be tough, spending all that good money to watch three home game blowouts in one season!!! UTAH 48 BYU 21 maybe...it could get ugly...UTAH 48 BYU 3 GO UTES!!!

  • Re; If BYU doesn't win Saturday
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:51 a.m.

What makes you think Wynn will be the starter three years from now. Or even next year?

After last year's game I remember all the Ute fans bragging how Corbin Louks ran through the Cougar defense and how he was even better than Brian Johnson and how the Utes were going to dominate the MWC because their sophomore QB had gotten some big-game experience.

Heck, I remember just 3 months ago when Terrance Cain beat Utah State and how he was the future of Utah football and how he was even better than Brian Johnson and how the Utes were going to dominate the MWC this year.

Wynn is a decent QB, but I'd be willing to bet he won't finish his career as a starter. Or even finish it with the Utes.

  • Re: VC
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:57 a.m.

And just where is Johnny Harline playing ball these days? He's another example of an ex-koog to make it big!!

  • How many are Utes?
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:57 a.m.

If we count the coaches who played for BYU versus those who played for Utah, BYU is way ahead. The Utes only improved in the recent rivalry by raiding former Cougars to help them improve.

  • If Utah doesn't win Saturday...

  • Re: 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:10 a.m.

Straight from Wikipedia, who would envy this?

The 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with Brigham Young University winning their first national championship by beating an UNRANKED Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. BYU handed the Wolverines their 6TH LOSS that season.

Final top 20 below, does anyone really believe BYU would have beaten Washington or FL or Nebraska or BC or Oklahoma??? NO!!!

    1-Brigham Young University
    2-Washington
    3-Florida
    4-Nebraska
    5-Boston College
    6-Oklahoma
    7-Oklahoma State
    8-SMU
    9-UCLA
    10-Southern California
    11-South Carolina
    12-Maryland
    13-Ohio State
    14-Auburn
    15-LSU
    16Iowa
    17-Florida State
    18-Miami (Fl)
    19-Kentucky
    20-Virginia

    Other notable FACTS:
    Michigan State 19-Michigan 7, Ohio State 21-Michigan 6, Brigham Young 24-Michigan 17, Iowa 26-Michigan 0, Purdue 31-Michigan 29

  • Re: How many are Utes?
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:12 a.m.

No, they only improved in the recent rivalvy by having players that consistently handed it to BYU on the field! Duh!!!

  • Re: Who owns who?
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:17 a.m.

(Actually, it's "Who owns whom?". Subject/object, and all that. Don't they teach grammar at that school in SLC?).

"all time record of U vs. Y: 53-33-4 or 50-30-4 depending which way you look at it. Y has 20 years to catch up."

Yeah, and for 30 years football was a sideshow at BYU.

Since 1964, when the BYU administration actually started to pay attention to the program, BYU has dominated the series 28-17. Lavell Edwards went 22-7 against the Utes, and his teams usually won by scores of 70-31, 55-7, 56-28, 56-6, 51-20, 48-17, 48-20, and well, you get the idea.

It wasn't until they hired Ron McBride that the Utes even started to become competitive again, and it wasn't until they hired Urban Meyer that the Utes actually dominated the Cougars.

Interesting that Utah fans dismiss BYU's 1984 national championship as "ancient history" yet they insist on counting victories over the Cougars from when Joseph B. Wirthlin was playing.

  • Re:Re Max Hall
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:26 a.m.

Wynn also led an offense that put more points on TCU than any team all year. Not even super Max could muster more than 7 on his home field. The defense was the big disappointment in the TCU game. Not Wynn.

  • Utef@n
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:31 a.m.

I'm so confident in my team based on their awesome performances against Oregon, TCU, AF, Wyoming and CSU that I can talk smack about wins over BYU that haven't even happened yet. Not just this Saturday, but my predictions for the next five years are rock solid and beyond reproach. I have so much credibility after predicting Utah's victory over TCU (it was just like last year right?) that I'm surprised any zoobies even dare post on this board for fear of my retribution.

By the way, BYU's National Championship is a myth because they couldn't possibly have beat that Washington team that BYU destroyed the following season.

My intellectual prowess is so grand I can re-write history. In fact, Utah's 2 BCS victories have official erased BYU's 30 years of dominance from the 70's to the 90's. As we speak the NCAA is now changing the official W-L column for those games and automatically giving Utah victories for the next four years. I'm that good. Fear me!

    Utah 4000
    BYU -2

  • Utah is more consistent
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:33 a.m.

Utah will win this game in Provo handing BYU their third home loss. The Utes are simply better overall than BYU ...not by much ... but enough to propel the Utes to victory by 7-10 points. The only thing that would save BYU is Utah turn overs. Max Hall is so unpredictable it is scary for both the Utes and the Cougars. BYU has no idea which Max will show up for the game but neither does Utah. If the interception happy Max shows up then Utah wins by 20+ but if Max is sharp and takes care of the ball and is able to spread the ball around to Pita , George and Jacobson then it will be a long day for the Utes. We pretty well know which Utah team will show up... the mystery is which BYU team will show up???

  • Re: 1984 | 9:10 a.m.
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:34 a.m.

Hey, whey don't you ask your coach what he thinks of that championship that you Utes are so fond of criticizing?

  • Re: Re: 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:34 a.m.

"...does anyone really believe BYU would have beaten Washington or FL or Nebraska or BC or Oklahoma??? NO!!!"

That question was pretty much settled in 1985, when BYU soundly defeated Boston College 28-14 and then two weeks later completely dominated the Washington Huskies 31-3.

You Ute fans should really study your history better before you ask stupid questions.

  • Bob2
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:35 a.m.

Lots of 14 year old troller on this thread. Gosh, your well disguised comments might just be used for cannon fodder on either bulletin board.--Sort of pathetic.

I've never seen these two teams so dead even at this time of the year. BYU's at home, but LES is not a road game for the Utes. Hasn't been for years. Over the past decade we can claim as much ownership of that place as the Coogs can. The Coogs can't say the same about RES. Even when both teams are very good, we tend to destroy you there. I look for the Coogs to try to reclaim their manhood on Saturday and try to retain a sense of being able to guard their house. I'm not positive about this, but I think this will be a classic. Go Utes!!!

  • Re: Re: Who owns who?
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:43 a.m.

The 1984 "championship isn't ancient history... it is just not legitimate!!! Doesn't the post above make that obvious? Well, I suppose it does only for those with common sense.

  • Re: Re: 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:44 a.m.

At the end of the 1984 season the #2 ranked team was Washington. In the 3rd week of the 1985 season, BYU pounded Washington 31-3.

In 1984 the #5 ranked team was Boston College. In the 1rd week of the 1985 season, BYU defeated Boston College 28-14.

Wow, all of a sudden your "evidence" of BYU's 1984 team not being worthy of a national title appear to be rather fragile.

    Enjoy :)

  • Close game but ......
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:50 a.m.

The will be a close game but Utah will win simply because they are the better overall team. BYU has fallen apart against every good team they have played this year scoring only 7 points against OU until the final two minutes of the game and getting blown away but FSU and TCU. Max Hall is a decent college QB but his O-line isn't good and with the athletes the Utes have on defense Max is going to have to pull a rabbit of his hat to win this one. I don't see BYU winning without at least two Utah turn overs. I do think Utah will cause at least 4 BYU turn overs which is why Utah will win.

  • Re: Re:Re Max Hall @ 9:26 am
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:55 a.m.

hahahahahaha! You do realize that TCU had a 38-7 advantage over the utes in the 2nd half (same score against after 4 quarters against BYU)? Any points after that were "garbage points."

  • 41-17 Utah wins
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:55 a.m.

This game won't even be close. Utah destroys BYU. BYU can't compete with the superior Utah athletes just like they couldn't compete against the athletes from FSU or TCU. Utah put up 28 points against TCU and BYU was lucky not to get shut out (scoring only 7). Utah is simply a better football program than BYU top to bottom and most the time the team with the better athletes wins. BYU is too slow and too predictable on offense. The BYU defense bends and breaks so all Utah has to do is not turn the ball over and they win this one easily by a bunch.

  • Rivalry at its best right now
    Nov. 23, 2009 9:55 a.m.

Another great rivalry game coming up. I'll be there! Can't wait!

Thank you Utah Utes for not dropping off the map this season like you historically have after a break out year. Thank you BYU for restoring a top national program and maintaining that respect year after year. Thank you Bronco and K-Whit for coaching great programs, with great records overall, and great wins with bowl games and championships.

The rivalry is as even as it could ever be when comparing the seasons with these coaches at the head. But the scale gets tipped on Saturday. Go cougars!

  • Just for the record!
    Nov. 23, 2009 10:01 a.m.

I'm not 50 and BYU will not catch UTAH in total victories over one another in my lifetime. I could live to be 90!
Wynn will throw the long ball all day on the Cougars because they still haven't developed "motorized" walkers for the Y secondary. That means Wide and Smithson will be able to get big yards on the ground keeping Max & Co. on the sideline. Perfect 'cause Max will then feel the pressure to "force" the game and thats when Johnson & Burton will start to have fun. This will be the best game of the year for the UTES. It will be good experience for the Y to get ready for another 6-6 Pac-10 opponent. Once again that falls to Arizona or UCLA! Get pumped Cougars isn't this the season you planned on with all your BIG Games @ home???? Next year will be even more fun when you have to visit TCU & Utah. DANG it's a great time to be a Cougar!!!

  • A few random facts
    Nov. 23, 2009 10:03 a.m.

BYU's program had won 23 consecutive games before the Michigan game. By the way, that Michigan team would have crushed the maize and blue babies the Utes beat by 3 points last year.

They played Washington the next year in Provo and the slaughter was so brutal the human society thought it was animal cruelty.

Other than Zane Beadles, not single player on Utah's offense last year would have started for BYU in 1984.

Jordan Wynn got 2 great catches from Reed. Otherwise next to nothing. No other points scored until garbage time, with 11 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter after the stupid Wynn pass for a touchdown--to the FROGS!. TCU did to Utah what Jim McMahon used to do to UTEP (49-0 with 10 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter). Utah looked like Wyoming against BYU. Not a deer in the headlights, a piece of roadkill shredded by an eighteen wheeler.

Terrance Cain and/or Shaky Smithson will take more snaps than Wynn on Saturday.

Good luck to both teams. Keep it clean and injury free. But try to keep the facts straight.

  • Can't Decide

"does anyone really believe BYU would have beaten Washington or . . . "

Funny you should ask. As a matter of fact BYU played Washington the very next year. Got demolished by the mighty Huskies, right? Hardly,
    BYU 31 Washington 3.

As to the game against Michigan, BYU didn't have much choice. They were tied to the Holiday Bowl and the HB lined up Michigan. Cougars won; pollsters said they were champs (which is how it was decided back then). You and Barry Switzer just need to get over it.

  • Hey r.e. 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 10:07 a.m.

michigan was 6-6 because the team was decimated with injuries. they started 2-0 and was in the top ten. by the time the bowl season came around they were healthy and back to their full strengh. If you need further proof look at 1985. michigan with most of the same players finish in the top two of the poll. also in 1985 byu played 3 teams that finished in the top ten final polls of 84. going 2-1. they clobber washington 31-3 and boston college 28-14. and the game with ucla came down to the last play. so your statement that byu could not beat wash, flor, oklahoma etc is your opion and is bunk. also 18 players from the 84 team were drafted in the NFL.

Do you honestly expect people here to be stupid enough to think that beating a DIFFERENT team in a DIFFERENT year equates to "would have beaten them in the previous year???" Sorry, people are not that stupid and everyone knows that the team who eeked out a 4 point victory over a 6 loss, Big 10 3rd place team would NOT have beaten one of the top 5 ranked teams in 1984, yes NINETEEN EIGHTY FOUR!

time of year. UTAH vs. BYU, Utah fans and Cougar fans talking smack about this and that. Saturdays game is going to be awesome. Max Hall will leave as the QB with the most wins in BYU history. Jordan Wynn will start his 4th game ever as a QB. My guess is that the goal posts come down in LES on Saturday by the Cougar Nation. Just a hunch...but I think that after they have witnessed a 3rd blowout loss @ home this year they will rip the goal posts down 'cause they will never want to see THAT kind of cougar football played again!!! The Legacy Continues...The BCS dream is alive...the Cougars are the National Champs!! Silly Utes...

    Nov. 23, 2009 10:33 a.m.

Really? Guess you didn't watch the Utah/TCU game did you. Because MWC Defensive POY Jerry Hughes was in the game rushing the QB when Utah scored with 2:20 left in the game. As was the entire starting defense from TCU, still blitzing.

If you need proof of this, listen to Patterson after the game. He was trying to get as many style points as he could by leaving his starter in until under 2:00 in the 4th quarter. Words from his own mouth.

You should really research things before declaring them accurate. Makes you look really unintelligent otherwise.

Our freshman QB scored 14 points MORE than "Heisman" Hall has in the last 2 years versus TCU. That's sad.

  • re: If Utah doesn't win Saturday
    Nov. 23, 2009 10:37 a.m.

    You sure about that?

On offense, Utah loses David Reed and Zane Beadles. That's it, for guys that make a difference.

On defense, Utah loses Johnson, Misi and Sylvester. Gaison and Wright have underachieved all year. Dale is good, not great.

On offense, BYU loses Hall, Pitta, George, best OL, Tonga, and likely Unga to early entry.

On defense, BYU loses their entire front 7 and both starting safeties.

As Hans Olsen stated last week, Utah will have a huge advantage over BYU next year with what each team has coming back.

    Care to argue any more?

    Nov. 23, 2009 10:58 a.m.

"Final top 20 below, does anyone really believe BYU would have beaten Washington or FL or Nebraska or BC or Oklahoma???"

    YES!!!

    Washington beat Michigan 20-11
    BYU beat Michigan 24-17

eight months later, on September 14th, 1985, BYU played the Huskies and destroyed them 31-3

Washington didn't even win the PAC 10 championship and passed on playing BYU in the Holiday Bowl to play Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl; the Huskies chose $$$ over playing the #1 team for the National Championship.

    Oklahoma
    tied 7-4-1 Texas 15-15
    lost to 5-6 Kansas 11-28
    lost to 11-1 Washington 17-28

Florida was on probation; didn't play in a bowl

Nebraska chose $$$ over playing #1 BYU to play LSU in the Sugar Bowl
    lost to 6-5 Syracuse 9-17
    lost to Oklahoma 7-17

    Boston College
lost to 8-4 West Virginia 20-21
lost to 6-5 Penn State 30-37

So, of Washington, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Boston College, Florida, or BYU, which team was MOST deserving of winning the 1984 National Championship?

after all of the debates, EVERY poll picked BYU!!!

  • Re: Re: Re: Re: 1984

"Do you honestly expect people here to be stupid enough to think that beating a DIFFERENT team in a DIFFERENT year equates to "would have beaten them in the previous year???""

And do you honestly expect people here to be stupid enough to think that head-to-head competition between BYU and Boston College and Washington the very next year means nothing in terms of relative strength of the respective programs?

Did Washington and Boston College graduate all their starters in 1984? And are you claiming that BYU was the indentical team in 1985 as they were in 1984?

It's silly to claim BYU wouldn't have beaten Washington or Boston College in 1984 because THEY DIDN'T PLAY EACH OTHER IN 1984. When they did play each other -- with many of the same players from the year before -- BYU won handily.

Only a Ute fan would refuse to acknowledge the significance of that.

  • Comparison
    Nov. 23, 2009 11:11 a.m.

Please stop comparing Utah's Performance against TCU to BYU's performance. Ute fans mention that they put up 28 points against TCU, but fail to mention that they were down 38-7 in the 2nd half! If we are going to compare the performance of BYU/Utah against common opponents (which is ridiculous), then make sure to include all 8 common opponents...

Against the other 7 common opponents, BYU has the overall advantage...

    BYU's average margin of victory = 22.7
    Utah's average margin of victory = 18

Teams that BYU beat convincingly (5):

    Wyoming 52-0, USU 35-17, UNLV 59-21, AFA 38-21, CSU 42-23

Teams that Utah beat convincingly (4):

    USU 35-17, UNLV 35-15, UNM 45-14, SDSU 38-7

Teams with which BYU struggled (2):

    SDSU 38-28, UNM 24-19

Teams with which Utah Struggled (3):

CSU 24-17, AFA 23-16 OT, Wyoming 22-10 (come from behind 4th quarter win)

    * Most of you will think this post is ridiculous as it should be when trying to compare two teams by common opponents. THIS IS WHY THE GAME IS PLAYED ON THE FIELD!

  • 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 11:11 a.m.

If Washington was so much better: why didn't the Huskies win their own conference championship; why was their score almost identical to BYU's score against Michigan?

If Oklahoma was so much better: why did the Sooners lose to 5-6 Kansas?

Florida was on probation: the Gators were never part of the NC discussion

If Nebraska was so much better: why did the Huskers lose to Oklahoma and 6-5 Syracuse?

If Boston College was so much better: why did they lose to 6-5 Penn State?

  • Quick Offensive Comparison
    Nov. 23, 2009 11:15 a.m.

QB: BYU wins. It is good to support and believe in ones QB, but right now Utah's QBs are simpluy not as good as Hall. Thats no garuntee he'll be the beter QB on Saturday, but he probably will.

RB: BYU. Unga and Wide have almost identical numbers. Wide: 161 Carries 918 Yards. 12 Catches 71 Yards. Unga: 161 Carries 900 Yards. 13 Catches 106 yards. The difference is in the backups. Shakerin is a good back up, but BYU has 2 good back ups who both have more rushing AND recieving yards then Shakerin has rushing yards. Add in Tonga's blocking abilities and BYU has the edge, though not a very big one, in the RB department.

TE: BYU. Pitta ang George have a combined 1072 yards and 11 TD.

WR: Utah. This is a tough one to compare because of 1) BYU's QBs has thrown for 892 more yards and 2) Over half of BYU's recieveing yards belong to TEs and RBs. I am going to have to give the edge to Utah in this catagory. David Reed and Jeremy Brooks have been just to good to ignore.

  • Re: 1984
    Nov. 23, 2009 11:18 a.m.

The opinion that 1984 was 1984 and 1985 was... yes, a different year and different teams is a fact. The opinion that BYU would MOST LIKELY have lost to one of the top 5 teams in 1984 IS my opinion too! And happens to be shared by most people with common sense!

I did look! Michigan started 1-1, they lost their second game on 09/15/1984 to 16th ranked Washington 20-11.

I am over it... don't know about Barry. It was what it was and it is considered a national championship... they "won" it. I am just using common sense here... had they had to play the number two team, they almost certainly would have lost. In my opinion of course.

All I can say is while it is still far from perfect, the BCS has made the national championship a little more legitimate in that the "crowned champions" at least have to play a top ranked team and we all owe that to BYU's 1984 team.

What's the argument?? Where was Utah in those polls? The only argument the Utes had for those years was that they contributed to BYU's national championship in 1984 and their #16 ranking in 1985 by losing to the Cougars in both those years.

Anyway, the past is gone. It won't make much difference on Saturday. I'm pulling for the Cougars. But, based on both teams performances this year, I expect that it will be a very competitive game. May the best team (BYU) win.

Didn't BYU have those same advantages over FSU? Didn't seem to help much as their defense couldn't stop the Seminoles.

BYU also had the more gifted QB, RB and TE's in the 2008 BYU/Utah matchup. And the more gifted WR.

  • The Comparisons Continue
    Nov. 23, 2009 12:06 p.m.

Offensive line: Slight edge to Utah. Stats: Sacks per 100 passes BYU 4.61 Utah 4.73. Yards per pass attempt BYU 9.34 Utah 7.56. YPC BYU 4.1 Utah 4.6.

    Overall Offence: BYU.

Overall Defence: Utah. Utah's defence simply has better athletes. In a position by position break down, Utah takes almost every position on the defensive side of the ball.

    Summary:
    BYU has a better offence.
    Utah has a better defence.
Everybody except for the most enthusiastic and unrealistic fans realize this. The surprising thin is that in points scored and points allowed, the 2 teams stats are very similar.

    Points scored (per game)
    BYU 35.55
    Utah 29.45

    Points allowed (per game)
    Utah 19.09
    BYU 21.55

Who is the better team? We'll find out Saturday.

    2. play the #2 team for more $$$ and HOPE that the voters would pick Washington IF they beat Oklahoma

Washington rolled the dice and won the game, and lots of $$$, but lost the national championship.

If you want to blame someone for BYU not playing a ranked team in the Holiday Bowl, blame Washington and Nebraska, two Top 5 teams who COULD have played BYU in the Holiday Bowl, but chose not to.

(Note: Sure, traditionally, the Holiday Bowl is a less prestigious bowl than the Orange Bowl, but who could argue that #1 versus #4 wouldn't have been THE MOST prestigious bowl of 1984, regardless of the name of the bowl!)

If we are just talking about your lifetime, and you are less than 50 years old, then the Cougars already have a winning record against your Utes during your lifetime.

Try 28 wins for BYU to your Utes 22 (the last 50 years in the rivalry). Your Utes still have some catching up to do.

Incidentally, Bronco and Whit are pretty even as wins and losses go. It is a good rivalry with equally good teams for the time being. But "even" isn't exactly what you want as a Ute fan who endured the 70's, 80's, and an even 90's (rivalry-wise) and 00's (for the most part).

It's funny how the Utes have been waiting to surpass the Cougs for so long--to make up for a lifetime of envy I guess. Congratulations for becoming as great as we are. But we all know you are still waiting to be significantly better, as your life's memory shows our team has been when compared to your team. Glad I'm on the better end of a great rivalry. Thanks for keeping it interesting though, Utes.

[BTW, for those who care, Utah's 2008 undefeated team beat 4 teams which finished the year ranked.]

1984 voters had a choice, basically, between BYU and Barry Swtizer's thugs at Oklahoma--an easy choice with Lavell at the helm in Provo.

I have tremendous respect for what BYU accomplished in 1984, it's just that Bryant Gumble's "Bo-diddly Tech" comment was accurate in terms of strength of schedule. No amount of hocus-pocus about what happened the next year or the previous year changes that.

  • If I were a BYU fan.....

If I were a BYU fan I would be "really" hoping for a win this year because....

    You are playing @ home
Your QB is a senior and is pretty darn good
Next year you start over with a QB and you play both TCU and Utah on the road (OUCH!!!)

As I said, you better hope BYU can pull a win out somehow on Saturday because it is going to be a while before the Y has a decent offense again.

If I were Bronco I would take my lead from both TCU and Utah and GET A DEFENSE for your team. Both TCU and Utah have such dominate defenses so that even in rebuilding years (offense wise) the team still has a chance to win the MWC championship. BYU has a terrible defense and must always depend on its offense to win championships. Whitingham and Patterson both learned a few years back that DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS ... and DEFENSE helps you win even in transition years. Bronco has yet to learn that lesson.

  • BYU Wins
    Nov. 23, 2009 1:11 p.m.

    BYU wins 48-30!

The Cougars entered the stadium expecting to take a quick lead, but they suffered early because of poor blocking up front. On the second play of the opening drive Max Hall threw an interception to Mychal Robinson that was converted into a touchdown just a few plays later. Fortunately that was Hall's only pick! After Utah's touchdown BYU took control of the game, scoring quickly and often to take a 41-17 halftime lead. A lackluster third and fourth quarter resulted in a touchdown and two field goals for Utah and a touchdown for BYU.

Hall went 30 of 42 for 390 yards and four touchdowns but was sacked five times during the game. Harvey Unga carried the ball for 30 times rushing for 140 yards and two TDs. Utah was unstoppable in the red zone but unfortunately for the Utes they only sniffed it twice.

After the game Cougar fans left the stadium in an orderly fashion. No negative words were spoken or directed towards the University of Utah fans. BYU again proved itself to be a class-act, truly worthy of the Las Vegas Bowl!

Love the arbitrary "let me choose a date when wins before that don't matter" approach to the BYU-Utah rivalry.

How dare you make light of the great BYU players of the past by pretending that BYU football didn't exist before a certain date?

Do you think the players who played against Utah in the 1940s or 50s or 60s didn't care about the rivalry?

My uncle lost his pants helping tear down the goal posts the first time BYU beat Utah.

Another Uncle was a quarterback there in the 1940s.

    Nov. 23, 2009 2:35 p.m.

Bronco Mendenhall, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around when they came to a modest little house with a faded Cougars flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity," said God. "This is very special, not everyone gets a house up here."

The coach felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion that had a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous UTES flag, and in every window was the UTE logo.

The coach looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was a good coach. I went to bowl games, sent a bunch of my players on to the pros, and I turned around the entire BYU football program."

God said, "So, what's your question?"

"Well," said the coach, "Why does Kyle Whittingham get a better house than me?"

God responded, "Oh that's not Whittingham's house, that's mine".

For whatever difference it makes, the Pitt team Utah defeated in the Fiesta Bowl ended the season ranked in one poll--which is one more ranked team that BYU's 1984 team beat.

Oh, yea, but the Pitt team BYU defeated was ranked when BYU played them--but, then Pitt finished 3-8 that year. Kinda like what happened this year to the Oklahoma team BYU beat to start the season.

If your precious Ute's are so much better than BYU then why can't they follow up last season with another undefeated season and give some validity to program and to the conference instead of showing what last season really was; a fluke season? Why can't they consistently beat our slow white Mormon boys? Fluke wins over Oregon State and home and an even flukier win over TCU at home show that your shaky-at-best greatness won't repeat again. Thank goodness at least we have real-deal BCS buster in TCU. You'll never win a national championship. 2, 10, or even 1,000 BCS wins still doesn't equal a national championship so keep dreaming Yewtes. Cougars by 21.

    Nov. 23, 2009 3:53 p.m.

You're spot on. Oklahoma is definitely 3-8, not 6-5, and they play in the big east against crappy competition not the Big-12, and they played with their Heisman Trophy winning QB in every game except BYU, not the other way around, and even without said Heisman Trophy winner they got blown out by Texas (a veritable lock for the NC game) by like 50 points not just by 3, right?

Yeah, Oklahoma is a pretty sucky win for BYU, but I guess we can't go back and unschedule it to play a powerhouse like Louisville now can we?

    Nov. 23, 2009 4:01 p.m.

Now, I have heard of yewt fans stretching for excuses to try and prove why their team is "superior", but COMPARING THE TCU GAME?! C'mon, now that is even pathetic for yewt fans! In case there are still yewts fans that believe Utah will crush BYU just because they were able to score 28 against TCU, consider this:

    1. A few minutes into the 2nd quarter, TCU had a 35-7 lead.
    2. Whomever believes that TCU was REALLY playing hard (including Jerry Hughes) after that lead is being delusional. I don't care who you are, Players start shutting down when leading by that much.
    3. Jordan Wynn was not that impressive... 16/32for 219 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

*If you're going to try to convince BYU fans that you are truly superior, then please use a different example other than a 55-28 beat down. Bottom line, yewts are stretching for anything because they know another beat down is coming this Saturday and they have to get a few words in before it does.

This ought to be fun. I hope it's a close one.

Utes land 4-5 long passes and pick off Hall 2 times.
BYU offense continues to roll, however.
Hall throws for 350 yds, Unga rushes for 110 yds.
    BYU: 35, UofU: 28

    Good luck to both teams.

The Ute Fans keep talking about self righteous BYU Fans, but I have to be honest...In the 7+ years that I have been paying attention to this neck of the woods (college) football, since the recent success of the Utah Program, Utah Fan has become arrogant and ignorant towards Programs in their own conference and out, they try to discredit other Programs successes and expect fans of other Schools to respect their Program's RECENT success. If the Football program continues to win and put quality players into the NFL, they will enjoy National respect from fans.

"For whatever difference it makes, the Pitt team Utah defeated in the Fiesta Bowl... "

    placed 25th in ONE POLL.

    now, that's a juggerNOT!!!

Pitt TIED for 1st in the Big Least, with THREE other teams in a 7-team league.

Over half the conference tied for the championship, only one game ahead of the 5th place team. WOW!

    BYU 1984 opponents
    4 teams with winning records (6-5, 7-4, 8-4, 6-5-1)
    2 teams with break-even records (6-6, 6-6)
    7 teams with losing records (3-7-1, 5-6, 3-8, 4-8, 2-9, 4-7-1, 1-10)

    Utah 2004 opponents
    4 teams with winning records (7-5, 7-5, 7-5, 8-4)
    1 team with break-even record (6-6)
    7 teams with losing records (3-8, 3-8, 5-6, 4-7, 4-7, 5-6)

The biggest difference between BYU 1984 and Utah 2004, however, was BYU (11-1) finished 2003 ranked 7th with an 11-game winning streak that included wins at #13/#15 Air Force and at #17/#13 UCLA. Utah (10-2) finished 2003 ranked 21st with no wins over Top 25 teams.

I get tired of this arguement. BYU is light years ahead of the yewts in football. Two good years in the last 100 does not a tradition make. We fill the stadium every week, raise more money from our boosters, and have classier more mature STUDENT athletes. Regardless of the outcome, WE outclass the U every year. The Cougs will come out victorious this year by blitzing the young Wynn to death and completely shutting down the run! Take it to the bank baby!

  • BYU vs TCU
    Nov. 23, 2009 7:13 p.m.

Lets face facts shall we. If BYU was playing this years TCU team on the road the game would have been over by kickoff.

Against teams with 7+ wins on the road TCU was:
    @ 8-3 Clemson 14-10
    @ Air Force 20-17

    and ... drum roll please....

    @ 9-2 BYU 38-7

TCU whopped Utah but if anyone thinks BYU has a better defense needs to explain how a 6-5 FSU team steamrolled BYU at LES?

Can someone name a team in the top 25 that has been PUNKED twice at home by 26+ points?

    Nov. 23, 2009 7:39 p.m.

I am a Ute fan. Over the years in conversations with Cougars fans the 1984 National Championship often comes up. I have come up with a nice way to handle that great year. I first point out the things that have been mentioned, the lack of any quality wins. I then make the statement that based on the way the College Football System that was in place at that time, BYU deserved to be the National Champions. My Cougar friends generally feel like I have given into their "Our program is better than yours" mindset. I then mention that the system has now changed, which they cannot argue. I then point out that Utah has had two undefeated seasons since 1984 and that in one of them they were like BYU, the only undefeated team in the country. At that point I mention that its to bad the system that BYU won their National Championship in was not in place when Utah went undefeated. They are generally at a loss for words as it is very easy to see at that point that Utah would have a National Championship and share of a second title with that system.

Tired of hearing 1984 vs. 2004/08. I really don't care. At all. And I think most people don't. It's a NC from before my birth, and the birth of most of the student body at both universities. And I don't care about '04/'08, either. I care about '09 and which BYU team we see. Hall has been consistent, or more consistent, since the TCU loss, and the interceptions have gone way down. They are still happening, but not at 4+ a game. BYU and U of U are pretty evenly matched. I give the edge to BYU because these boys can put together an outstanding football game when their emotions are strong.

  • BYU Student
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:36 p.m.

I can't believe how much ignorance is spewed from both sides. Can we please just be civil? Is it worth embarrassing yourselves? I don't think it is. Next year is next year. This is 2009. We'll see who has 10 wins on Saturday. I predict BYU in a close game. A win is a win, whether it's by 1 point or 100. BYU dominated AFA, TCU didn't. Both won. Neither of those scores dictated the outcome of the TCU vs. BYU game, did it? 52-0 vs Wyoming and 22-10 for the Utes vs. Wyoming doesn't mean anything. 11/28 means something. I think BYU is the better team. I think Whit and Bronco are equally good coaches. I think Hall is a better QB, but the Utes have more weapons on defense. And speed isn't as deadly as we're always threatened with. Play with heart, Cougars, and you'll take the win. I don't think BYU will have an issue getting up for this game.

  • Let's Go Back to 1984...........
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:52 p.m.

1984 was also the year that "The Love Boat" was the number 1 show on television. Also, most stereos still came with an 8 track. 1984 was also the year that Indian Prime Minister, Gandhi, was assassinated.

Man, that was a long, long, long time ago. It sure is fun to live in the past.

  • Re: no difference - 5:13 pm
    Nov. 23, 2009 8:52 p.m.

No, the biggest difference between the 2004 Utah team and the 1984 Utah team is that every one of Utah's 2004 games was over in the 3rd quarter, except the game against AF--which ended mid way through the 4th quarter. Utah steam-rolled every team it played in 2004.

On the other hand, BYU's 1984 team had 4 "close" games (by Dick Harmon's 25-year anniversary account) -- which is similar to Utah's 2008 undefeated team. Except that BYU played 0 teams in 1984 which ended the year ranked and Utah played 4 teams which finished the year ranked, including 2 in the top 10.

I give BYU lots of credit for winning the beauty contest that was the national football "championship" in 1984.

Certainly better BYU than Barry Switzer.

But, there is no comparison between what BYU accomplished in 1984 on the field against ranked competition to what Utah accomplished in 2008. Similarly, there is no comparison between BYU's 1984 season and Utah's 2004 season where Utah dominated every game it played.

    TCU: 28-55 L>> Down 35-7 w/ 11:40 to go in 2nd qtr
    BYU: 13-38 L>> Down 21-3 @ the half(very possible)
