Was a great conference in the early days. I often wonder where it would be today
had the WAC avoided adding the all those other teams back in the days of
expansion. Had that not taken place the WAC would be a major power
house these days. Greed kicked in!!
boise state & fresno state should join the mountain west.....the wac should then
take wyoming and unlv
will never leave the MWC for the simple reason they both play a vital role being
the whipping boys each year.Personally, I'd be on the lookout with
Wyoming, with Christensen at the helm, and the talent he has brought in, as well
as having some Polynesian connections.....Wyomings spread offense (which they
should have never given up. See the Joe Tiller years)is going to give MWC teams
troubles in the years ahead. Not so certain that Wyoming will be dead last come
the end of the year.
They both are unknown
Karl, you stated the following: "There isn't a week goes by that someone doesn't
ask me or make reference to a Mountain West team thinking they're in the WAC."
It isn't very difficult to figure out why you hear comments like that and it is
not because the WAC has a better reputation than the MWC. People make comments
confusing MWC and WAC teams because from 1978 until 1998 BYU put the WAC on the
map during Lavell's unprecedented success, bowl appearances, and a national
championship. The WAC was synonymous in many people's minds with BYU, so when
BYU, UT, AFA, WY, CSU, SDSU, and NM left the WAC and formed the MWC, most
people, especially in the east, never grasped the distinctions between the two
conferences, but they continued to take note of BYU, and with TCU's and Utah's
rises the differences between the conferences became more apparent. Now Boise
is the WAC, whereas there is a triumverate of recognized national powers sitting
atop the MWC every year. There would be no history or reputation of the WAC
without BYU's storied past in that conference.
Just wish the reporter had been awake during the interview. Then he could have
noted that even though they had five bowl reps last year, they went 1-4. Or he
could have corrected the false statement about this year's BCS buster having a
chance at the Rose Bowl--that window doesn't open till next year.
irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. This is all regional talk. Get
into the real world Benson. All you are doing is stoking the locals. Besides,
newspapers around the country are going down the tubes. Most people are
thinking about the the country and the economy, not all the convoluted baloney
that sports reporters/editors are spewing out about off the field antics of
players/coaches/commissioners, etc. What most people who are plugged into
sports want is the game and coverage on the games, not all this intrigue about
nongame socalled news. Please report on game news, and real things rather than
all this flap, most of it conjecture and made up junk.
Thsi is a classic case of "selective perception." Make no mistake about it,
Boise state has done alot with what they have had to work with. In that respect,
they remind me of B.Y.U. back a few years. However, no one who is informed
would make some of the statements that Karl Benson did unless he was comissioner
of the WAC. He is blowing smoke big time. If Boise State were given a chance to
join the MWC, they would do so in a minute. It would gut the Wac and Benson
would likely still be making irrational statements. Gary Anderson takes the best
position in saying that both conferences ought to have mutual respect.
Up until just this year the "experts" still thought BYU and Utah were in the
WAC.I hear it ALL the time from callers on national sports radio
programs and on TV.And the funny thing is that nobody EVER corrects
them; so the myth continues.I think the REAL college football fans
are finally catching on after the past few seasons. But the experts still need
to figure it out.
The WAC is a one team league at best; that is if you could combine BSU football
and USU basketball. The rest of the conference blows. For some reason Fresno
State gets a lot of media love each season; yet you can take it to the bank that
they will implode at some point during the season. Hawaii of 2007 was a complete
fraud and pretty much embarrassed each and every school from the non BC$ world.
With teams like Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Utah State,
and Idaho, how in the world can you make the claim that the WAC is even in the
same ballpark as the MWC?Fresno State, Nevada, and Hawaii are ok but
very inconsistent year-to-year. The WAC has ONE very good,
consistent team: Boise State. That's it!Overall, the WAC is a
COMPLETE JOKE OF A CONFERENCE. With all due respect to Boise, going undefeated
in the WAC isn't that great of an accomplishment.
I think Hawaii showed that their appearance in a BCS bowl was a unjustified
fantasy. The WAC is a one trick pony, with that pony just waiting to run out of
the barn to greener pastures. I gaurantee you that Idaho, New Mexico State and
Utah State could not even win the Big Sky, they would be middle of the pack.
Old Sour Grapes Benson is at it again. He's still fuming that the current MWC
teams didn't like his WAC monstrosity creation of the 90's. Personally, I
really enjoyed watching BYU play at SMU in front of 100 fans.
The thing I find funny is the WAC poster boy (Boise State) has made it know that
they would jump to the MWC in a second if they got the chance. That tells you
all you need to know. Benson can try and spin it any way he wants but A=A.
In the 1980s, with teams like UTEP, New Mexico, and Colorado St, how in the
world can anyone make the claim that the WAC is even in the same ballpark as the
current MWC?San Diego St, Wyoming, and Hawai'i were ok but very
inconsistent year-to-year.In the 1980s, the WAC had ONE very good,
consistent team: BYU. That's it!Overall, the WAC of the '80s was a
COMPLETE JOKE OF A CONFERENCE. With all due respect to BYU, going undefeated
[and just barely no less] in the WAC isn't that great of an accomplishment.
Even the average WAC fan will admit Benson's comments are off the mark. The MWC
is more reconizable.
You really gotta feel sorry for Karl. He's been thrust into an unenviable
position of having to glom on to the misperceptions of unsavvy sportswriters to
sieze any acclaim for his conference. The WAC's notoriety has become nothing
more than a case of mistaken identity. Pathetic.Still...go
Actually, I believe it was reported that the Rose Bowl agreement takes place in
2010- which would be next season's bowl game, as it is a New Years Day or later
All this talk about the WAC and MWC leaves you to wonder what would have
happened if East Carolina had stayed the course last year, and been the team to
crash the BC$ party. They almost did.Other teams such as Houston, or Tulsa
could also be a party crasher this year. Memphis in basketball is on a whole
other plane from hack teams in the WAC and MWC. The point being that it should
not be an issue of which conference is better, but do all the "mid-major"
conferences deserve more respect? I am beginning to think that The MWC
particularly aren't any better than the pious conferences I have come to loathe.
If you took BSU and Fresno from the conference the wac would be the big sky.
What has happen to fresno they use to be tough but nothing lately.
It's very simple...the WAC and MWC...and the other mid-majors are regional
conferences. When you are walking around Chicago, New York, Miami,
Atlanta, LA...etc; you see the hats and jerseys of about 12 universities (unless
someone from Price is vacationing in NYC and wearing a U/Y/USU/BSU/etc hat...and
asking to get mugged). We care, no one else does. And, it's ok.Get over it.
sorry, when BYU, Utah, CSU pulled out of the wac it became a terrible
conference. Granted Fresno has pulled it's weight in various sports, and Boise
in ONE sport, but they play awful teams and occasionally beat teams that are
mediocre-good.Sorry commish, but you running your mouth again in MWC
territory doesn't do you any good, other than you are setting the mwc up for
another BCS RUN, 3 Top 25 teams and another domination of your conference
I love how the WAC always brings up the fact that they have had two teams go to
BCS bowls and that Utah is the only MWC team to crash the BCS party. The WAC
commish continually fails to mention the fact that Boise BARELY beat Oklahoma
and that Hawaii got crushed by Georgia. The MWC has sent Utah to the BCS TWICE
and in both games the Utes crushed their BCS opponent! I am a BYU Cougar fan,
and though the Cougs haven't been to the BCS, yet, at least I can recognize what
the Utes have accomplished! The Mountain West is, hands down, much better than
the crazy WAC!
This article is WAC!
I have a lot of friends who went to BCS schools, and they roll their eyes in
derision every time they hear anyone from the MWC talk about being on par with
the BCS Conferences. I smile, because I have seen the same look and the same
condescention in the eyes of some (not all) MWC fans. Those currently in power
really don't see any difference between the WAC and the MWC except, perhaps,
that the MWC whines a bit more. That doesn't mean there isn't a difference
between the MWC and the WAC, but the national perspective is that there isn't a
difference. Sorry, my MWC friends, you're also the puny little sibling
desperate for attention, at least in the minds of most sports fans nationwide.
Please Benson, for heck sakes, never, ever, ever, include Hawaii as a BCS
buster. Their strength of schedule was dead last in Div. I football and had
absolutley no business at all being in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. They were
an utter discrace to college football and set the non-Aq. back five years.
The MWC wont kill the WAC off cause they need someone to play in the New Mexico
and Boise Truck Stop bowl.
Why's this idea crazy? The WAC does have more name recognition than the MWC.
Outside of the West, most people think half the MWC teams are still playing in
the WAC. "BYU, oh that WAC team?"
The Mountain West may not be on par with the SEC, the big 12, but last year they
where better than the big least I mean east and the ACC. The head to head
showing against the PAC + 1 spoke for itself. And to say that most fans across
the nation disrespected the MWC is not ture if you go to any of the ESPN or CBS
sports line blogs the MWC was getting a lot of respect. Many fans of the BCS
conferences even recognized that the MWC was just as strong or stronger that the
Big least ACC and PAC minus USC. The MWC was rated last year as the 5th best
How about this idea to help with the recognition out west. Both conferences are
done with their league play by Thanksgiving Weekend. Maybe the WAC and MWC
should combine into one conference with two divisions and the winners play each
other the same weekend as the ACC/SEC/BIG 12 in a true conference championship
game. It would make basketball stronger...all sports would benefit.
Give Benson a break. What would you say in your state of the conference address
during media days? -As usual, last year we only had 1 team in the
conference that was ranked?-We were 1-4 in bowl games?-As usual, we
were abysmal last year in our OOC BCS record?-Our best team lost to the
2nd best team in the MWC in its bowl game? The guy is doing the best
with what he has to work with. In the meantime, UNLV and SDSU need
to step it up against UNR and SJSU and BYU and Utah need to cream BSU the next
few years to silence the critics.
What do you expect Benson to say? Any college football fan with half a brain
knows the difference between the MWC and the WAC. The WAC is a shadow of what
it used to be when Utah, BYU, Colorado State et al were conference members.
I have a very good friend who went to the Sugar bowl, he was telling me about a
tee shirt he saw that said the SEC's Alabama vs WAC's Utah. the tee was recalled
but not before some got sold, the point is just as Benson said outside of the
Rocky's, well noboby cares the WAC the MWC it's all the same.
Spoken like some true BYU homers!! You guys read way too many of Harmons
articles and listen too closely to Bronco's "spiritual voice". I'll say it
again!!! The mountain west has proven nothing other than in can be dominated by
Utah. It's a mid major conference! Hello? There is a lot of parity in college
football- have you not whitnessed how BSU and Utah have proven that over the
last few years? Check your egos at the door BYU fans! Those of you who
think the MWC is far superior to the WAC need a reality check! IT IS A MID MAJOR
MWC > WAC 2-0 Head to head bowl record last yearMWC > WAC Teams finishing
in top 25, 3 vs 1MWC < WAC Teams getting waxed in a BCS bowl game 1MWC < WAC teams rated below 115, 3 in D1MWC < WAC ugly blue turf
The SI article said it begins with the "2010 season", which I believe means 2011
Rose Bowl. So Jake will have four years to get us there...
You all need to read the article again. Benson wants to 'reclaim' the bragging
rights, meaning he admits that the MWC is better right now. He was arguing that
the NAME of the WAC, and the tradition of the WAC is more recognizable than the
NAME MWC and the tradition of the MWC. It's simple. The WAC's been around
longer, so it has a longer tradition and more recognizable name, regardless of
which school was the best and where they are now. However, having to reclaim
the bragging rights means that the MWC is currently better than the WAC. He
just spun what you all are saying to sound more positive for the WAC.
Reading comprehension anyone? This was poorly written piece by Eborn he's
stirring the pot with misleading writing (although he knows his audience). He
did not get any facts wrong but going from Benson's comments right into opinion
talk about "prestige" really clouds the issue.Jared must have known
what the outcome would be however (with the apparent non-existent reading
comprehension skills of the readers posting here). Outrage and page views, well
played Mr. Eborn.Hmm nailed it. NAME recognition, NOT play on the
field or BCS bowl wins or color of turf. NAME recognition. Funny how Utahns
play the little man syndrome at every turn. Good grief, I guess football season
can't get here soon enough.
It's going to take a lot of time for the WAC to get past the stigma of being
"cast aside" by the "so called" big time programs at Utah, BYU, Air Force, etc.
If it wasn't for Boise State the WAC would be in trouble regarding national
recognition as a viable Division I conference. Let's hope BSU stays in the WAC
and the other top tier WAC schools have some credible nonconference wins with
other big time football programs.
All this talk about history & tradition of the WAC vs that of the MWC is
ridiculous. They are one and the same through 1998. All--or at least most--of
the past WAC 'glory' that Benson is claiming was achieved by founding WAC teams
that left to establish the MWC in '99. They didn't abandon their history when
they abandoned the conference, in spite of the fact that national media may not
have caught on to the change yet.
The Mountain West is thee conference right now over the WAC the only team that
has success is Boise State and the Mountain West has three!
Observe the number of comments! There must be competition between the two. To
both conferences ... "Wishing you the best again this season".
I think you have to rate them season to season, just like you would the 6 BCS
conferences. So far this year, the MWC is superior to the WAC. MWC (Utah) 2 vs
WAC 0 (SJSU, USU).However, three games today will help decide which
is better:CSU vs NevadaUNLV vs HawaiiSDSU vs Idaho.Certainly if the MWC teams win all three, I think one could surmise the MWC is
superior this year. But you never know, they haven't played the games yet.Other notable MWC vs WAC match-ups for 2009:BYU vs USUCSU vs
IdahoUNLV vs NevadaNew Mexico vs NMSUSDSU vs NMSUNow how do these conferences rate with the other non-BCS conferences? Will, so
far I believe the MWC is the best of the non-BCSers, with the WAC and conference
USA being tied for NEXT followed by MAC and then the Sun Belt (not including the
independents). At this point the MWC would be battling the ACC and
Big East for 4th best overall conference.
