The tournament MVP should be Kevin Griffin. He played out of his mind. Timmy
didn't do as much as Kevin.
Yes, Region 15 did dominate and congratulations to all of the Region 15 teams
that made it to Saturday and made it to the top 8. 1st- Escalante -
Great job, this was your last time to win the championship for a while and you
pulled it off.3rd- Valley - Going to be great next year, possibly
could have been the state champs if it wasn't for Duchesne's final shot.6th- Panguitch - Next year... Eric Frandsen will have to carry the
team.8th- Milford - Outlasted and ranked above Piute, B.V. Wayne,
Dugway, Manila, other great teams, etc... You guys are going to be great since 3
of your starting 5 are only Sophomores.4 out of the last 8 were from
Region 15. Thanks Panguitch, Milford, Escalante, and Valley for showing Region
The Moquis proved to everyone that they are the best team in 1A basketball.
Great job guys.

This is your last championship for a long time Escalante. I predict that next
year is a toss up between Piute, Whitehorse, Rich, Milford, Valley, and
This is Whs third year in a row placing in the top 8. I think they are becoming
one of the top teams in utah 1A.
I wouldn't say for a long time...there's more talent hanging around Escalante,
and some excellent coaches! If anyone has proven how to play as a team, even if
talent is a little short it's Escalante! They'll be back. Way to go Valley,
Milford, and Piute. You will be awesome teams next year. And watch out for
that Rich team, they have an excellent shot next year, if Valley doesn't squash
their hopes again.
I'm from Duchesne, in fact I was on the front row wearing a jersey from the last
time Duchesne took state, all four days and all I can say is that I love every
single one of those boys from Duchesne. They worked hard and people talk about
how they got there on luck and such, but they got there! That hasn't happened
for a long time. Please don't put them down. Don't you think they feel bad
enough already? Coach Young, great job. You took a group of boys that didn't
stand a chance and gave them that chance! Good job Escalante you guys deserved
that win I'll give ya that. We love you Eagles!!!
escalante, valley, and duchesne were by far the three best teams in the tourney
and I would love to watch those three teams lay eachother 10 more times.
congrats to all 3
Way to go Moqui's. Congrats on another state championship. Don't count us out
just yet for next year. We might suprise you.
Great job Escalante for taking care of business and taking state two years in a
row. what an awesome tournament to watch. and i agree there is a lot more
talent hanging around Escalante than people think the Hughes' still have one
more boy who is just a sophmore and although he doesn't seem to care as much as
those other Hughes boys he is a big strong kid and will only give people a
difficult time. as far as the Tournament MVP it should go to that entire team
because they earned it together each night someone new stepped up to do just
what they needed to win one night it was kevin another it was the barney kid and
of course the Hughes kid helped out all in all great job Escalante.
I agree. Timmy Hughes was great, but Kevin Griffin should have been MVP. Brady
Barney was also awesome.
Congratulations to Escalante ball boys and cheerleaders for a third State
championship in 4 years. Critics from around the State seem to be counting
Escalante out for next year, but our boys are not listening. They believe they
can carry on this new tradition of winning, and we, as their fans believe it
too. Something about this town that makes the impossible a challenge and
somehow our young men and women rise to the occasion and do the impossible.
Look out next year, because here we come!!!!!
Thanks Region 16(Tabiona,Rich,Duchesne) for the great games. You have beat the
best to be the best. Hope to see ya all again next year.
Great show Moquis. Great town support at the games.MVP? Barney had very
consistant games offence and defence. Griffin was great in the middle. But
don't forget Logan M, whose scrappy defence kept Tabby from getting a last shot.
But I have to give it to Clayte, who showed up every night.
Timmy would probably be the first to say the MVP belongs to someone else. But
the fact is, if he hadn't played so well against Tabby (and throughout the
season) the Moquis wouldn't have been in the final game. Congratulations to all
the Moquis - everyone stepped up at some point to help the cause. And Dalton is
the best sixth man in the state! Highlight of the tourney: when Valley's Coach
Shakespear coaxes in inconsolable Clay Williams into the team huddle after a
tough loss to Duchesne. That's what high school athletics should be about!
Was it just me or was Escalante's back-to-back state title game last night a bit
of a dud? I guess I just never felt like Duchesne could actually beat the
Moquis. Compared to the RIch/Escalante game in the semis, the state title game
was flat. I enjoyed the Valley/Duchesne game more, especially the last second
buzzer beater drama. Heck, I even enjoyed the Valley/ Rich game for third 3rd
and 4th better. I am not from Region 16, but can someone explain to me how
Duchesne beat Rich 2 out of 3? I can't see how that was possible. This is
possible: Region 15 and 16 dominated. In fact, had Whitehorse not overcome a
big deficit in the last three minute against Piute, all 8 places would have gone
to Regions 15 and 16. Dominance!Regions 17, 18, and 19 were absolutely
down this year. Had Dugway not drawn a 4th place out of Region 19, they would
still be without a win. What happened to those three regions' champs?
Hmmm...something about being the last numerical regions in the state. Oh! Oh!
Region 15 is Region 20 next year.
If you look at the comments regarding Escalante, Rich, and Region 15 that were
made on this website earlier in the year, you would think Rich, and Region 16
and even Region 17 were going to dominate. Many Escalante fans wrote that
Escalante would be there for the 1A title, and that Region 15 dominates the 1A.
Many others disagreed, and say Region 16 and Rich are the best in 1A. Way to go
Region 15 teams (Valley, Panguitch, Milford, Escalante) for proving what has
been true for years--Region 15 is the toughest in 1A. Great job to all teams!
To say Duchesne should not have beat Rich 2 out of 3 is rediculous!! Just
proves that heart and soul make up the winning more than talent. Also, good job
Valley!!! Coach Shakespear must be using some strategies that stuck with him
Escalante, great game yesterday. Escalante fans, don't get too high and mighty.
Tabiona almost beat you, remember two points. Lots of close games in this
tournament. Great job all teams. Mouth from the north.
Thanks for a great year and a great tournament guys. It was very entertaining
and full of a ton of energy and high flying athleticism. Thanks to the coaches,
Justice, the band, THE FANS, cheer leaders. The team played well all year.
Thought the bench really showed up for the tournament. Holmes played great
against Panguitch especially. McKee had a very solid week. Andersen hasbenn so
tough all year! Thanks to the Seniors and good luck Cornia and Thomson in the
future, thanks for all those years of entertainment. It was obvious no one
wanted to be at that 3rd and 4th place game this year but you all still made an
effort to look as if you did. You guys are good kids and obviously think highly
of each other. That is fun to watch. Congratulations to Duchesne for a great
year that no one expected. Hats off to tabiona to come within one more three
pointer going in to beaat Escalante. Congratulations to Escalante on the
Congrats to the Moquis!!!! but also congrats to all the teams that made it to
state, I played for Escalante when just making it to state was a HUGE deal.
Good Job Escalante!!
Great Job Caden!
CONGRATS MOQUIS!! I HAVE TO HAND IT TO THE TAYLOR FAMILY FOR KEEPING THE CROWD
GOING! GOOD JOB TO JACE! YOU ARE AN AWSONE BALL HANDLER!
Way to go Escalante Moquis!! I came down from Salt Lake to watch you play and
was so excited to see you take State! You played a great game and we are so
proud of your efforts.
Over the last 6 years the Moquis are 21-3 in State tourney games Thanks Moquis!!
Best game of the tournament... Escalante Tabiona, i wanna know what everyone
else thinks?? please comment back
You would think that after Duchesne goes to state and beats Green River, Piute,
and Valley (all three respectable teams) they would get a little respect! To all
you people who say they got lucky against valley, i recall Duchesne leading
almost the entire game! and by as much as 9 points! To say that they couldn't
have beat Escalante is ridiculous! Not to take anything away from Escalante they
are a great team! Talent isn't always what a team needs to win! Duchesne worked
as a team this year and had more heart then any team in that tournament! they
deserve some respect! Congrats Eagles! Coach Young congrats to you too with
getting you 500th win at the tourney and showing what you can do!
That was a good game!! how about Valley, Duchesne??
Great Job Escalante You Make Us Proud. We'll see You Next Year
Great meal!!! Great energy!!! Great Job Escalante
I think that was a great game between Tabiona and Whitehorse!! Infact THEE BEST
game on Saturday!! Great job to both Coaches. Both of you made good adjustments
at the right times. Whitehorses' #14, #25, and #23 did a fantastic job.
Tabiona's #34 and #40 did a fantastic job too!! Most of all you all played as a
team. You guys were fun to watch. Great game. Thanks.
For the first time in a LONG time we were unable to attend the tournament this
year but what a great one! A word of thanks to our radio announcers, Danny and
Dave, for a job well done. It was especially nice to hear from some of the real
stars of the game, the boys! Every region in the tournament has cause to be SO
proud of these fine young men. It's too bad that some parents don't take
lessons from their young people on sportsmanship! The boys all seem to be great
friends while some parents end up holding hard feelings toward one another!
Y'know friends "There IS life after basketball!"
No ones got a mouth the size of Taylors! GREAT JOB ESCALANTE KNEW YOU COULD DO
IT!! Dont count out the Moquis just yet! All the boys did their part this
Oh I think Duchesne has been getting plenty of respect! Great team, great game!
Sounds like there's a lot of people still trying to justify them being the best
even though they lost. Fact is, they were not the best TEAM, Browning is
awesome, he has a great career ahead of him. The Moquis were flat our the best
team there. You know the old saying, close only counts...Close
games, whatever. Every team in that tournament had their good nights and bad.
But when it comes down to it and you want to talk heart, effort, and playing as
a team, that was hands down Escalante. Look at the balanced scoring in all of
their games. Look at their assists. Look at the fact that even in a tough spot
they found a way to win the close games, even one without the person that
everyone considers to be the star. Ask Tim Hughes and I bet he'll tell you that
he's a star because of team play, because the rest of the boys help make that
possible for him!
Watch out for Rich next year!
Congrats to all eight teams who placed. It was a great tournament, with many
exciting games. This is a time to reflect on the good of the tourney, not
to throw any jabs at anyone.See ya next year.
Whoever wrote that the state final was a dud because Duchesne couldn't beat
escalante is correct but saying rich could have is crazy. Duchesne showed that
they are definately one of the best 3 teams in the state. If Duchesne and
Valley played 10 times they would split them 5-5 but the way that Valley
dominated Rich barely lost to Escalante once and beat them another time shows
Valley may match up a little better against Escalante than Duchesne does. How
ever it also showed that Duchesne is clearly better than Rich, they beat them 2
out of 3 times, beat Valley and played Escalante to a closer game than Rich did.
Congrats to the EAGLES they showed what being a team and playing INCREDIBLE
defense is all about and for sure are one of the top 3 teams in the state with
Valley and ESCALANTEand earned that #2 spot!!!
Timmy should have been the MVP of the regular season. Kevin had the best region
tournament on the Escalante team but couldn't get the MVP because they lost, he
was the only reason they played Valley somewhat close and the only reason they
beat Wayne. Brady was the MVP of State!! The kid played 3 great games and
deserved to have that recognition. Congrats to the entire team, Dalton was for
sure the best 6th man in the state and would have been one of the top 3 guys on
the floor for most teams. Logan is just a flat out baller, he does all the
little things and never has a bad game because he is always making a timely pass
getting a huge rebound or something. Congrats to ESCALANTE Duchesne and Valley
who showed they were without a doubt the 3 best teams in the state.
BLA BLA BLA
Who cares about MVP its a team sport right????
I thought Dugway played well , so relax and keep it positive.
And today we say good bye to one of the greatest dynastys in the history of 1A
basketball. We sure will miss it!
Looks to me like the two regions dominate. Congrats to both regions for playing
hard each night during the year and at state. Hopefully the other regions can
step it up and make it more interesting for next year. Moquis, eagles, Buffs,
and rebels were the cream of the crop this year. Hopefully those teams start
open gym on monday. Cya next year.
rich is going to kill next year i doubt escalante even makes it to state but
great job tim hughes your really fun to watch. great job caden your a stud.
what a great opportunity is was to have my son play in such a great tournament.
I'm grateful he got to play against some of the best athletes in the state of
Utah. I'm proud of him and the entire Duchesne team for their integrity and
determination. They played their hearts out the entire week and I am proud of
them. Cong. to EHS players, coaches, fans and parents. It was a great week of
basketball. Thanks to our community and coaches for the many sacrifices for the
boys. Thanks to the Deseret News for not forgetting about 1A basketball. If the
rest of the state only knew what they were missing!!
Way to go Moquis. You got it done....again!!!! That's pretty impressive. But
whats even more impressive is the way you handled yourselves all year. You are
a great bunch of boys and it showed everywhere you went but especially on the
court. Everytime you needed to step up your game you did it. The Barney kid
really stepped it up during the tournament and so did Kevin Griffin. Hughes led
the way all year and had a great tournament as well. It was fun to watch your
teamwork. Thanks for the show.
the Tabby escalante game should have been the chamionship game. no one else came
within 7 of escalante and tabby had a chance to beat escalante. it was probably
the best game at the tournament. the championship game was a dud.
Escalante will make it to state next year if Kody Barney is able to play. Kody
is a big part of the team.to Moquis:I agree, Clayte was definently
the MVP. He was there helping those boys every night.
Lets not start shooting our mouths off so fast boys. You boys need to buckle
down and learn to play as a team before you start making promises for next year.
i'm happy somebody agreed that the Tabby Escalante game should have been the
championship... but congrats to duchesne.. congrats Escalante
Not to take anything away Escalante cause i love them Moqui's! But i'm really
impressed with the way Tabiona Played, they Played good Ball the whole
I think that if Valley could have played better in that game vs Duchesne, they
would have played Escalante a better game than Duchesne did.
If the Tabiona and Escalante game should have been the championship game, then
Escalante would have still won!!!! But, how could Tabiona get to the
championship without getting by Escalante?
Championship; Dud. Competely agree. Congrats to duchesne, they played well in
the weaker upper bracket. If duchesne played escalante 10 times, escalante would
have 10 wins. Duchesne does a great job, working hard to take teams out of there
style of play. It has worked for them all year. Slowing high paced teams down.
Good job moqis you had to play two better games and teams to get to the
championship than the last. congrats to be able to do so.
Valley is actually the only team that beat Escalante this year. Great job
Valley on your last two weeks of basketball.
some people are amazing on this this thing and are better just to stay off.
however there is no question escalante knew which team they had to beat to get
to the Champ.. and it was Rich. Compare the Rich/Escalante game and the
Escalante/Duchesne game and there is no question escalante played a lot better
against Rich than they did against Duchesne, however they had to. Congrats
escalante. Rich go get em next year!
I think the real winners are the young men who stood there to receive the honor
of Academic All-State. Good job and congrats to all of you.
I have been around 1A Bball for 20years and I have seen alot of tourneys . This
year I was really disappointed in the level of talent and the number of quality
teams. It kind of felt like a JV TournementWhat do you guys think
?GO EAGLES YOU DID GREAT!!!!! DHS
Beau Browning is my fav! I will be so sad wen he is gone next year! But i will
be glad that my nephew will be a senior next year. I think the game was unfair
because of the refs, escalante is a good team. good job guys.
Unfair because of refs? How could you say that when Escalante had TWICE the
number of fouls on them that Duchesne did? Duchesne could have very well won if
they hadn't of missed so many of those foul shots down the stretch.
I would like to say congrats to Escalante for their win at State! I'm from
Duchesne and thought that it was a fun game for everyone involved. I would like
to see them play again just for fun. No matter who wins and who looses it would
be a fun game. Both teams played their hearts out. I hope that no matter what
else is said about Duchesne in these ridiculous blogs that the Eagles can hold
their heads high knowing that they went against the toughest team in the state.
Those boys did amazing, both teams! Congrats Moquis!!!
If escalante would have played against rich like they did against taby or
duchesne it would have been rich and Duchesne playing for the title. Escalantes
whole team couldn't miss against rich and they couldn't hit against taby and
duchesne. I guess their coach know when they needed their A game and he got
them to bring it when they needed it the most. Congratulations Escalante.
Caden Anderson will be MVP next year.
Dont count Duchesne out next year , because they will be back . Nobody thought
that they would get there this year but they did. Duchesne is at the top of
every sport every year FOOTBALLBASKETBALL WRESTLING TRACK take your pick .
WE will be in the mix every yearGO EAGLES
What ever happened to Altamont high school Basketball ?
Congrats Moquis you guys played great and represented our school in a great way.
We are proud of all of you! Thanks for all of the great memories, we have
enjoyed watching you all play for the last several years. In my book you are all
MVP's that is why we are so tough anyone of you could be the star any night and
all of you play great team ball!!Lets all take a minute to think of Clayte
- Our superman - I guarantee that he is smiling down on us. He would be
proud!!Thanks guys we love you allp.s. I agree with the comment
earlier about the Taylors. We loved it when the "lets go moqui" cheer started.
The funniest thing about these blogs are always the what if's, if this, if that.
No Escalante didn't play Duchesne with the same approach as Rich, Rich won games
with intensity, Duchesne with quite control They beat rich by matching there
intensity. If you spend any great amount of time as some of us do watching
basketball you will learn that it is a game of match ups and certain players at
different times rising to the occasion. Tabi rose to the occasion against
Escalante probably better than anybody.
Rich got some really bad breakes when they played duchesne and got beat.
duchesne and rich were in my opinion the second and third best teams there.
Which one is which is a toss up they are totally different. Tabby is the fifth
i think. When rich played in the third and fourth place game they didnt give to
much effort and they still had a chance to pull it out. Dont say that valley
dominated them because they didnt. if they played 10 rich would win 8 or 9.
EHS's coach also came and watched several of rich's games this year he knew
their offence as good as they did and it showed. Congrats on being well prepared
and the championship.
Kevin Griffin should have been mvp all the way...he led the way for the team
through the entire tournament...Timmie was good but with out kevin they never
would have won state. Way to go kevbot!!!!
If you missed the Tabiona/Whitehorse game on Saturday, you missed one of the two
best games of the entire tournament. Both teams played their hearts out, both
coaches did a fantastic job. The fans were great. This was an outstanding game
that featured everything! The Tabiona/Escalante game was the other one that
would get mention for best game.
Let's remember that Escalante played as a team and won as a team. MVP stuff is
what tears teams apart. It is not what winning is about. Winning is about having
a goal and reaching that goal. One person may shoot and score. One person may
only rebound or play great defense. Who cares who is MVP? Talk to any great TEAM
and the TEAM MATES and COACHES will tell you to a man that discussing who should
be MVP is pure poison. Give the coaches a great hand. Anyone notice that the
coaches get a great assist from Coach Jim Spencer who is a retired Provo High
championship coach and he moved home to Escalante to retire? He is not on the
bench, but the coaches are quick to tell you that he gets a great deal of credit
for what happens on the court on the defensive end - the end where championships
are won. Kudos to all for a great team effort and classy play. Next year who
knows - defense is a constant. Duchesne was one good outside shooter away and
played a great tournament. Valley too.
I think that 1A basketball competition should implement the use of three
referees instead of two. There are too many critical situations being misjudged,
and another pair of eyes could help call what the fans see. Just a thought.
Great tournament! Great job to all the teams, especially Escalante and
Same thing again this year for Rich - Good talent, poor coaching.
Wow what a joke arguing about mvp. Timmy desereved it! Who cares i'm sure Beau
Browning would much rather have a state championship ring than a mvp trophy!
Anybody who thinks that Escalante played as hard against Tabby as they did
against Duchesne and Rich wasn't in Richfield.
Once again some parent from rich wants their boy to get their name in the paper.
Coaches from rich are great the parents keep the talented kids from coming
together as a team. If you watched Escalante they don't care who shoots it. The
parents from rich are what keeps you from winning.
Jeffy played really good
Congratulations to Panguitch for showing such style and sportsmanship. Eric
Frandsen did an awesome job along with his team. What a fun Tournament for
You guys need to get off this blog and go to the 4th place blog. Everyone who
keeps saying how Rich is better than Duchesne apparently didn't watch Duchesne
beat Rich twice this year. They also didn't watch how easily Valley beat Rich
and lost to Duchesne. Duchesne plays much better defense and deserved that #2
spot. No question the 3 best teams were Escalante, Valley, and Duchesne!!
I have to agree that the championship game seemed anti-climactic after the
Valley-Rich consolation game. After watching both games, my friends and I
couldn't understand how Duchesne could have withstood Valley's aggressive
halfcourt zone defense. I didn't see any of the games before Saturday's, but
Duchesne had to have played better before the championship. They seemed to have
no shooters and no one who could put the ball on the floor. They did play
tremendous defense, but Escalante was clearly the better team. Congratulations,
the tabi game wasn't even close until the end, people need to give it up and
realize that the only good part of that game was the last minute, it really
wasn't that close until then. Congrats to Tabi to playing a close game but it
doesn't matter they took 5th. Panguitch played Escalante to a 1 pt. game
earlier this year but didn't win either. Those close games don't matter, they
are losses just like the 10 pt. losses are. The only 1A team to beat Escalante
all year was Valley and they are not on here complaining. Your Reg. 16 people
need to give it a rest. Duchesne lost, Rich lost twice, Tabi didn't even make
it to the Semis. Congrats on a better year than Regions 17,18,19. Now let it
Congrats to Duchesne and an awesome year. Our boys fought hard all year and they
deserved to be in the championship game. Beau you are one cool kid and I have
really enjoyed watching you play.
I agree with your statement about Whitehorse doing a great job. In my opinion
they were one of the big surprises in the entire tournament. They were only 1
point in overtime from taking 5th, against a really good Tabiona team. Yes,
they had a bad game against Valley but proved they could play strong in the
following games with Piute and Tabi. I thought that was a great run Whitehorse
made, considering what they lost from last years team. I'm glad somebody else
recognized this besides me and I am a Reg. 15 fan. I also think Milford should
get a mention. Nobody gave them much credit at the beginning of the tourney,
but they found a way to place.
Congratulations to all of the teams. It was a fun tournament.
escalante may have won state but valley was the only 1A team to beat them!
Only one team can take home the championship trophy (Congratulations
Escalante!), but I feel that all of the teams and players are winners. Each of
our communities throughout the state was represented well and should feel proud
of our kids. None of us know what each boy has personally overcome and achieved
this ball season, so in their own way- each player is a MVP. Let's all show our
sportsmanship here and allow everyone to end this season feeling positive about
basketball. Congratulations to all of the players, teams and coaches on a job
well done! It was a fun tournament. Congratulations to the Academic all-state
team on their accomplishments. Congratulations to the seniors from all of the
teams. You are a classy group of young men that have been fun to watch and get
to know over the years. Best wishes to all of you! Also, a big THANK YOU to the
Deseret News for your awesome coverage of all high school sports!! And THANK YOU
to Danny Yardley and the radio station!! Matt will be gone next year, but I
will still be a fan and will continue to follow 1A basketball.
Congratulations to Escalante for winning the championship! What a bunch of TEAM
players. They were clearly the best team there. Tim Hughes was MVP all season
and might have had an off night during the week but all in all deserves the MVP
during the state tournament! The whole team stepped it up when needed and the
coaching was far better than rich's or Duchesne's. Rich has a lot of talent,
they just need to learn to play together more as a team. Moguis you are
intertaining to watch. That also goes for your crowd! Anyway good job on the
repeat,you deserved it!
I say good job to the Valley Buffs! They came out the week before state with no
expectations and beat Escalante then captured the Region championship against
Panguitch. At state they played great defense and came within 6 seconds of
playing for the championship until Duchesne hit a lucky shot at the end. Valley
would have given Escalante a much better championship game and I know for a fact
Escalante did not want to play Valley again! They also showed against a tough
Rich team that they were Championship material. Matt Hoyt was in my opinion the
best player in the tournament so good job for making it on the all-tournament
team! He is so good at handling the ball and setting up other players to score.
He can score when he needs to, but unlike most of the other "star" players
instead of racking up points for himself he passed the ball to other players so
they could have a chance to score (like in the Whitehorse game when they were
already way ahead). Plus, he was the only one to be Academic All-State and on
the All-Tournament team. A class act!
THANKS FOR YOUR COVERAGE D NEWS
Congrats to every team, it was a great tournament! There were plenty of exciting
games. The comments on the Tabby vs. Esc. game, it wasn't the state championship
game, but it was great game, and that's what happens at the state tournament.
It's obvious the two better regions, but smart teams never overlook any team,
especially at state. Congrats Escalante what a great win.
Escalante had a good inside and out presence with griffin and hughes. duchesne
only had Browning, and they would rather throw the ball away trying to force it
into a triple team than shoot the wide open three. The fans and students, and
cheerleaders were begging for a three pointer. Escalante was very well coached,
They put 5 guys on Beau, and let the rest of the team shoot away, and it paid
off for a third title in 4 years. Wow.
Good job taking state wish our game would have been saturday it would have made
a better champion ship game then you and Duchesne. Out of all the games I would
say we had the best game out of the whole tournament. haha. See you guys
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who makes 1A baskettball so much fun. I
have been around this game a long time and the kids are what make it great. We
had a great group of boys this year, from our outstanding seniors to the
outstanding kids that they practiced against everyday and I am so glad I got to
be a part of it. We needed every one of them to make us the team we are. We
have a lot of respect for the teams we played against because we know how much
effort it takes day after day to get these kids where they are. What makes any
team great is the relationships that they form from all the hard work together.
That is one of the best things that I will take from this year. I know that
most of the coaches will say the same thing. That is what makes this game so
great. Thanks again to everyone who sees the good in everything that we all do.
if you want to say that valley was six seconds from playing for the championship
game you could also say that they came 2 seconds away from loosing the region
tournament to panguitch at a buzzer shot whould of should of could of does not
mean anything, and on top of that you beat escalante congrats but to say they
did not want to play valley again is crazy.
congrats valley on being the only team to beat the state champs the only bad
part is you should have saved that game for March 7th all you did by beating
them in region is fueled the fire thank you
Valley feels good about their season and would like to congratulate all of the
other teams on great seasons as well.
Dude you escalante boys rock the world!!! congrats on another state
championship. It's been awesome being able to compete with such a high level
team for the last six or seven years and i just wanna say thanks for all the
good memories we have. you are an awesome bunch of players, coaches, parents,
and fans. you guys deserved this!!! nice job moquis!!!!!
Once again thank you Moquis for making this a great year by bringing home the
championship. Most of all thank you for all your support and the way you have
honored Clayte, with the warm-up shirts to the picture that you gave to us. You
are all MVP in my book. I know Clayte was looking down with that big smile he
has and is holding up his finger saying MOQUIS #1.
I wasn't saying that Valley was the championship team at state, I said for me
they are my champions and played a great 2 weeks of basketball. I say good job
to Escalante and Duchesne and all of the other teams for a fantastic tournament.
Yes, Valley could have lost to Panguitch in the last seconds of the Region
championship, but they didn't. And I give Duchesne credit for coming back and
winning even though it was a heart breaker for Valley at the time. The way
Valley played against Rich, I think they could have given Escalante a good game.
It's over now and I say good job to all the teams this year! It was a fun week
of basketball so lets just all be friends and say WE LOVE 1A BASKETBALL!
WOW, people need to get a life! First off you never know how it is going to end
up next year. So just let it go until then...
Ok however I do have one thing to say before we STOP! Do not underestimate
Duchesne again next year. Sure Beau was a huge loss, so was Cameron and Reed.
But I think that they will pull it together again three seniors thats it. They
have a deep bench and a ton of heart so we will just have to see how that goes
next year. Peace out and talk to everyone later. GO EAGLES
Lance, when it comes to sportsmanship, you and your team have always been great
examples! I have always been impressed to see you play the Moquis, and win or
loose, both teams are always smiling, laughing, and having a good time. Even
after the game it is clear to see the friendship those 2 teams have with
eachother. Now that boys is what it's all about. We sure missed seeing the
Badgers at the tournament this year. You are such a fun team to watch play! I
hope we see the Badgers with a title of their own really soon. Thanks again for
the comment, and for all the good games! Good job on a great career Lance!
I too want to congratulate the STATE CHAMP ESCALANTE MOQUIS!! awesome job guys.
I have always loved playing ball with you and am so thankful for the friendships
we've made. You are amazing basketball players, but even more important than
that, you are amazing people.. So thank you!! It really has been great these
last four years. Too bad all great things have to end i guess.. or do they,
escalante badgers at the summer games?? haha anyway, congrats and great job. I
have all the respect in the world for you and am glad i could get to know you
all. you are CHAMPIONS!!
The Moquis not only had a great team, they had the "X" factor, great fan
support. The people in the community came togather and supported the team all
year long. Moqui fans outnumbered many teams at the away games and packed the
house at home. The red shirts and red towels stepped up the intensity off and
on the floor and we were all rewarded with the championship. Thank you Moquis!!
Why would anyone say anything about a team not in the tourny. Altamont has only
had one team in 8 years make it to the tourny. They were stomped by escalante.
Keep it recent, no reason to try and stir the pot in a unstable community. good
job duchesne. Congrats to escalante, heck of a team!
Whoever said that it's the same to compare valley's win over panguitch and being
2 seconds away from losing is the same as being 6 seconds away from being in the
state championship is crazy. Valley was up with 6 seconds to go and lost on a
semi buzzer beater. In the region championship Valley led the whole 4th quarter
you have to be down and hit a shot at the end to steal a victory.
When the players can start playing perfect games, only then can you expect the
referees to call a perfect game! I thought the referees did an outstanding job
in this years 1A tournament. Did they get every call right? No. Did the players
play perfect games? No. It was a great tournament and all involved including the
refs gave it their all. Even in the 3 man games up north, refs still are human
beings and will make mistakes! Don't sell this tournament short and blame lost
games on the referees. This 1A tournament was a great success for all involved!
I honestly thought that kevin Griffin would have gotten the MVP award. Think
about it, his defence and offense was what kept the moquis together. I thought
that they could have won the state title without Tim but not without Kevin.
Thats just my opinion though
Altamont didn't make it because i don't think they won a region game this year.
Or any game for that matter. Altamonts girls could probably take their boys.
I wanted to thank the fans that came and cheered for our team this year. We
wouldnt have gotten as far as we did without you guys helping us strive to make
it all the way. Im proud to say I was a senior that played with such a dynamic
group of kids and am going to miss it dearly. Good luck next year to all teams
THE FOLKS AT THE SEVIER VALLEY CENTER NEED TO BECOME MORE FAN
FRIENDLY.NO FOOD IN BUILDING!NO PARKING!PARKING
VIOLATIONS!ANNOUNCER SREAMS OUT WHILE PLAYER IS AT THE FOUL LINE!POPCORN TWO DOLLORS FOR ONE OUNCE!LIMITED FOOD SELECTION!NOW
RICHFIELD HIGH WON'T BE INVOLVED, COULD BE RIGHT TIME TO MOVE TO SUU.
I feel like the tourney needs to move back to SUU as well. Its just dont have
the same feeling to it like to old 1A tourneys that used to. Its not at the
college setting, and it dont have the hype like when it is held at SUU. At SUU
we got a lot more media coverage and exposure there as well. SVC is just NOT
like the great tourneys like they used to have at SUU. Get the tourney back to
I think SVC does a great job with their tourney. Personally, I don't want to
drive clear to SUU. SVC is far enough for me. Why fix what isn't broken? I
didn't ever have trouble finding a parking spot. Who cares if they don't allow
outside food in the building? Eat before you come to the game. And if the
concessions are too pricey for you I repeat--eat before you come to the game.
Thanks to the folks at the SVC for such a great 1A preview and tourney
I think everyone brags about how good your team is but I'm gonna say that little
schools like Tabiona, Escalante, Manila, Etc. they are good in lets say
basketball because that is what most of them focus on, now you look at Duchesne
and Rich we focus on whatever sport is in season like football and track
wrestling and basketball, so I'm just saying its kind of an advantage to be a
smaller school against some of the bigger 1A
I'm sure all you schools from down south would love to have it at SUU. I think
it only fair if it rotates from North to South and back. It is unfair to the
schools from the North to have to travle and stay the night when many of the
southern schools can go home and sleep in their own beds and go about a normal
day. I do agree they should move the games back to a college just not always at
Why don't they have it a UVU. It would allow the northern schools to sleep in
their own beds for once during state tourney. It has its advantages....
why move the state tournament away from the majority of the competiton region 16
is the only regioin that has anygood job moquis good job svc be there again next year
Don't you have anything else to talk about? If SVC is allll the way down here
then don't make the drive. Stay Home.
What to expect in the future.1. Region 15((20) what ever it is going
to be) continues to be the most dominate region. Panguitch, Escalante, Piute,
Valley & Wayne will be competative every year. Bryce Valley will continue to be
Bryce Valley. Milford will most likely return to being Milford.2.
Duchesne & Tabby will continue to be the top teams from region 16. Rich will be
good next year, but like I said up and down. Manila will compete with Altamont
for 4th place most years. And if Altamont can't get it together Manila will
represent region 16 most years. Altamont will likely get thing turned around a
bit. 3. Whitehorse has a few exciting years in front of them. They
have some young talent. Man can they shoot the ball. Can they really get there
one of these years. Green River will be the standard of region 19 most of the
time. Monticello, will they really move to the next level or are they the
Milford of region 19.4. Dugway will be Dugway. The rest of their
region will continue to be the rest of their region.5. The Private
Schools will load up and make runs.
what is this talk of duchesne being a small 1A school? They are one of the
biggest. Them along with rich, panguitch, and whithorse. Yor 1A but not that
small. Manilla and Tabi have 40 to 50 students total. You are pushing 200. Isnt
Duchesne 3 times bigger than escalante as well. Way to go small schools. If
their is an advantage its having more atheletes to choose from. If you have 40
boys try out for a basketball team you can get a better selection than say a
manila that will have 15 try out. That is for all 3 teams. It is not what they
focus on. While you play football, others ae playing baseball. Quit coming up
I went to 2a last week at SUU and i felt like they put on alot better show that
the SVC. Just like the above JUST A THOUGHT, I agree with everyone of his
Comments. We need to get the UHSAA to move the Tourney back to SUU. It was fun
SUU puts on a way better show then SVC I would much rather go to SUU than SVC.
Better people, really well organized, and a great college floor. I have been
really disappointed with SVC and i dont know why they are having it at the SVC.
SUU is a great place to hold the state tournament.
Lets get the tourney back at SUU. I have been really disappointed with the 1A
tourney at the Sevier Valley. SUU puts on a wonderful tourney.
Thats exactly the point schools closer to SVC have an advantage I'm sure some of
the northern schools would like the same advantages once in a while. Then we
would here people from the south complaining. If they rotated it each team would
have an advantage at some point not the same teams every year. SVC does a good
job but I think they should rotate it.
I agree i thing we should have the 1A tournament back in Cedar at the Centrum on
the campus of Southern Utah University
Not a good idea, these kids were a team. Don't try to drag them down. I've seen
that exact problem ruin good programs.
BY FAR THE BEST PLACE TO HOLD THE 1A STATE TOURNAMENT, end of story. SUU put on
a great state tourney. I went and watched a cousin play at the 2a state tourney
this year at SUU and then went and watched a brother play at the SVC and SUU PUT
ON THE BEST tourney of the two places. The arena and parking is 10 times better
and the fact that it is on a major college campus makes itthat much
SUU does not put on the show that SVC does and Richfield has done a lot to make
the tourney run well. For the UVU fans give it up. Talk about a mess they
charge for parking if you can remember. They also have a horrible floor and
dont even make it a good show. And from what I hear the administration has a
horrible time working with them. SUU is cool but SVC does a better job.
We don't want to have to drive any farther south than we do now. SVC is far
enough! If you aren't going to keep the tourney there. Then I suggest a yearly
rotation---one year in the south and one year in the north. By the way----UVU
quit charging for parking!!!!
Richfield is a lousy place to spend 4 days. Cedar City is bigger and it is near
St. George, which is nice.I played in both arenas and SUU is a way
I thought the 2A tourney was a lot better this year than the 1A tourney. I think
the reason was that the 2A tourney had much more diversity with the Private
schools being in the final four.Without the Private schools adding
their contrasting style of play to the 1A tourney this year, I found it rather
boring to watch.Hopefully they get better.
I agree richfeild is a bad place to spend a 4 of days. I have been to the 1A
tourney the last 4 years and I decided not to come this year and just catch it
on radio. I also don't like waiting til 5pm on saturday waiting for the
championship. They need to get things rollin early on saturday. The tourney does
miss teams like layton christian slam dunking, The best games always seem to be
the semis on friday. SUU is a better venue and 35 miles away from STG.
Richfield puts on a better show than suu every year. I'm from Cedar and go there
all the time and love Richfield much better! Most championship games dont start
till 7:00 so 5 is perfect. The Championship game in Richfield is by far the best
out of the state. SUU has the same parking, prices are higher here so why is
everyone complaining? If you lived up north would you wanna travel all the way
to cedar? Get Real People. MOQUIS ARE AWESOME EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU!!!
Someone explain to me how a third ranked team wins state? I think that region
sets things up!!! However, they did deserve State. None of the other teams
showed up. And thats that I guess.
They were only ranked 3rd because if 1 1A loss during a region tourney. Other
than that they have been ranked #1 all year by this newspaper. Don't read into
thee seeding too much, they were the state's #1 team coming in, even if they
were a #3 seed. This SUU talk, most of these comments were cut and
pasted in here from comments made a few days ago on other games. I think it may
be just the same person that really loves SUU adding multiple comments and
creating a different user name each time. Everyone I have talked to loves SVC.
The only teams that don't stay in motels are Wayne, Panguitch, and Piute.
Everyone else travels down and stays. It's a good middle ground for the
majority of 1A. Good location, great venue. The seats didn't even all fill up
this year, why waste the extra money on SUU for all the extra seats you're not
going to fill? Their concessions aren't cheap either!
Good job Escalante on your first place finish at state. Great bunch of kids and
an excellent coaching staff. I hope you guys realize just how lucky you are to
have the coaches that you have.
No its not the same person leaving comments, i left my comment about it
and i feel like SUU is alot better place to have state and those arent all my
comments. SUU is the Place to have the tourney.
I think that the comments that are for the SVC is that same miserable
worker that took tickets at the SVC
Nice job Escalante!!!Now, enrollment figures on how they
finished.Escalante -- 51Duchesne -- 166Valley -- 73Rich -- 110Tabiona -- 46Panguitch -- 96Whitehorse --
160Milford -- 78Seems to me, at least this year, that
enrollment had little to do with strength of team. The only school in region 15
that is above 100 is Wayne, and I didn't see them at the tournament. Next to
region 18, region 15 is the only region that does not have more than 2 schools
above the 100 mark (region 18 doesn't have any above 100). Altamont, Christian
Heritage, St. Joseph, Wasatch Academy, & West Ridge are all schools above 100
that stayed home. Summary....Only 4 out of the 10 largest schools
made it to state, and out of those 4....three of them placed!
a basketball game can only have 5 players on the floor at a time, you can see
that Escalante has spent time developing the talent that is available to them.
Numbers have some to do with it but if the coaches put in the time their
programs are successful look out for Valley in the future, Piute will always be
strong along with Escalante. Rich, Tabby, and Duchesne are still going to be
there but look out for Manila I think they could challenge for the 2nd place in
16. Who knows about the private schools but I think it is safe to say Dugway is
down. Monticello could compete along with Green River and White Horse. Looks to
me like the talent pool in 1A will be better for the next few years.
Way to go DUCHESNE! nobody expected you to get so far but you proved them wrong
and we couldn't be prouder! Beau your amazing we'll miss you next year!Fans and
Cheerleaders, you did a great job and kept the team spirit! Congrats to
Escalante you guys played great! Rich, Valley, Tabby, and all the other teams
you did a great job too! GO 1A!
Move it back to SUU or rotate it from south to north. The SVC isn't cutting it.
Escalante was clearly the best team all year long. Their record proves it and so
does them winning the championship. They controlled every game in state. Stop
your crying and move on...
First off I want to say that if they move the tournament to SUU then the next
year they need to take it up north and rotate - North meaning farther than
Richfield. It is not far that the Northern teams always have to get rooms and
the Southern teams don't. It makes a difference to players when they can sleep
in their own beds and eat mom's cooking. Next I want to say that I
thought the officiating was some of the poorest I have seen in tournament play.
It always seemed they favored Escalante - Tabby game and Rich game. It's like
they read somewhere that Escalante was supposed to be state champs and they were
going to make sure that happened...Food for thought - what about
going to 3 man reffing with at least one ref from the south and one from the
North and flip for the other one...Anyone's thoughts???
It is so funny to me that as soon as Rich loses they start to blame the coaches
- maybe there was too much coaching from the parents and the real coaches
couldn't be heard because of it. If Rich ever wants to do any better than third
or fourth they need to come together as a team and the parents need to let that
happen. So maybe instead of blaming the coaches we need to blame ourselves as
parents because we wouldn't keep our noses out of it. Hopefully next year we
can let the coaches do their jobs!!!
so move on from this blog
A couple of things. MOST southern teams do stay at the tournament. Again,
Panguitch, Piute, and Wayne are the ONLY region 15 teams that don't stay in
motels up there. Panguitch lost to Rich the 1st day, momma must have some poor
cookin in that town! Escalante ate resturaunt food and slept in motels and it
didn't hurt their game!Second thing, Rich was a very physical team.
They have played all year long by pounding the ball inside and battling the
other teams for positioning. They have played most of their games in foul
trouble all year. Escalante has a lot of shooters, a lot of games they don't
get playing tough inside, which equals less fouls. The Duchesne game is a great
example, they took it inside, and Escalante had TWICE as many fouls called on
them. The refs did a great job, even ask Rich players that! Many of their
players told us how great of a team we had! When it comes down to it, both of
your points are nothing but excuses of why your teams lost. They flat out got
out played by the best team in the state!
Escalante did win the tournament and was a great team. What I think some of
these people are trying to say is it is still closer for most of the southern
teams nothing more. It is an advantage for their fans and schools if it were
held up North the fans from the north would show up and the southern teams fans
would have less of a showing. I think Rich travels well so they would show up
any where. I also think the Refs did a good job and there is no need for a three
Northern Venues dont work because of economics along with the fact that the only
one we can go to has a horrible floor. Ask those who played at UVU it is like
playing in a sand box. And who wants to pay for parking. SVC is great Central
and puts on a great show.
I think !A FAN needs to grow up and stop acting like a baby.
SUU is the way to go.
I was watching 2A at SUU, the concessions where nice. But for the Championship
games they didn't turn off the lights, they didn't have the fog and all the
other fun lights. At least the SVC does that. It is a great location for 1A and
2A. SVC is in the middle of the state so it's perfect! GET 1A & 2A BACK TO THE
I've watched the tourney at 3 places. Dixie college, SUU and SVC. SVC is a multi
functioning building and the other two were strictly designed for college
sporting events. The best and most fair solution is rotate SUU and some spot
near SLC. Im hearing though that northern utah doesn't work so it sounds like
SUU is the solution. Or back to dixie where its a nice vacation for all. I hope
1A south destroys 1A north when they play to prove dominance!
Get the tourneys back to SUU
Next Year, this will be Region 151. Piute - Coming back with all
their players and were alright this year.2. Valley - Losing a few great
players, but will still be amazing3. Milford - 3 of the 5 starters are
only Sophomores and they still beat Piute twice and placed 8th.4.
Panguitch - Are losing Trac Norris but can still do great with the Frandsen
dude.5. Who Cares6. Who Cares
I don't think Escalante is going to win a region game. They will be fighting
Bryce Valley for last place.
Escalante will be up there with the rest of region 15, they played great against
every one of the other teams JV teams and that was with one of their star
players out with an injured knee. Don't be counting Escalante out yet.
I played at the Centrum in the Region tourney and played at the SVC in the state
tourney and i would much rather play at SUU. Alot better floor, along with great tournament atmosphere.
Notice how it is mostly always the south who is talking crap about the north.
Oh, next year I will do this, then the next year and so on. Actions speak louder
than words so please just grow up. And NO we do not and will not underestimate
and team from anywhere so go with it ok!!!
I have to agree on most of the comments about moving the tournament to SUU. I
was a manager when it was down there and Rich was in the championship game
against Waterford. I know it farther for the northern team but you know what. No
matter where it is the 1A crowd will still follow their teams. Cedar City has
alot more stuff to do while you are not playing. The atomoshere is amazing of
playing on a collage floor on the actual campus, I mean it doesn't get better
than that, plus it has more variety of food. And being on the floor is spactular
and im only the manager i wonder what it feels like to be a actual player i mean
Come onSUU is the best place to be during tournament time.THINK
ABOUT THE ATMOSHERE OF YOUR TEAM
"My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a
weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength." -Michael Jordan_Keep doubting us for next year. We may surprise
Who cares if escalante doesn't finish at the top next year. They have won the
state title 3 times in 4 years. Thats quite the accomplishment.
Baeu Browning had to carry the Duchesne basketball team on his shoulders. With
out him the team would have had no legs. Every other team in 1a was scared of
him!! hes one of the best out there and without him they would have had to work
twise as hard. Baeu Browning was deffintely the leader. GO BROWNING.
this is what next year will look like1- Piute2- Valley3-
Escalante4- Milford5- Panguitch6- Wayne7- BV
How can you even say Escalante is going to rank above Milford and Panguitch.
What a joke. They aren't going to make it above 6th place in Region 15.
Don't complain about Escalante having a good team. In my day we struggled to
win any games at all. Now we are on top let us enjoy it. Good job Escalante
from an old Moqui.
this year is going to be the best for escalante we got bigger kids ready to play
there hearts out
EAGLES KICKED BUTT,,,,,,,,RICH AND TABIONA WERE VERY GOOD AS WELL, THE EAGLES
DID NOT GET LUCKY AGAINST VALLEY EITHER, A WIN IS A WIN. BTW, DUCHESNE BEAT
ESCALANTE THIS YEAR BY ABOUT 40 POINTS SO HA
everyone needs to realize that everything escalante has they worked for and have
been working for way before they were even in high school. As for everyone
bagging on escalante this year here is a heads up. kody barney is back giving
escalante a great point guard moving the ball down to the bigger guys. i think
they just might suprise everyone come region.
