2A looks like a real battle.
how can you have valley ranked 5 with a 8-7 record when there's manila,
tabiona, dugway, monticello, green river that all have better records than valley
even Salt Lake Lutheran has a better record
It is not the record that matter, it is how tough the team is. Valley plays in
the toughest region, that is why they are ranked like they are. You put them in
Region 18 and their record would be just like Dugway's. So that is why they are
there and no I am not from Valley or region 15.
North Summit vs. South Summit battle this week....we all know the Braves are
The Wildcats better be prepared for a battle against the Wasps tonight- don't be
surprised to see the young Wasps pull off the upset. Wasps by 10 or more.
Everyone should understand that these rankings are the opinion of DNEWS.
Everyone has their own opinion of who should be ranked or not. So quit saying
"why do YOU have them ranked, bla, bla, bla."Simply state, I think so and
so should be ranked because bla, bla, bla.Everyones opinion is not
them same...so get over it......Nuff said.......
You can't always judge a team by their record. Look at Valley in baseball. They
went 9-8 and played in the state semi-finals. ALL but one of their losses for
the year were to Wayne and Panguitch. When the number three team plays the top
two teams seven times in a season it hurts the record. Region 15 teams have
tough games in all of their sports. They work hard for their wins and often have
very close games.
Green River has a better record but look at their schedule. They don't have any
quality wins. All the wins have come against weaker teams, like Tintic,
Meridian, Wasatch Academy, Monument Valley, etc. Monticello's record is only
slightly better at 8-6, but they have few quality wins. They beat Wayne,
Whitehorse by 2pts. in overtime, and barely beat Green River. Look at all the
losses against good competition.
I think the rankings for the 1A girls is right on track. It could be a toss up
for #1 and #2, but I think the rest of the field is pretty evenly matched. It should be a great tournament. With a few upsets in the making.
South Summit is the perfect example of being ranked solely on record. If you
look at who they played in the preseason and a very soft region- it is easy to
see why their record is so glossy. Their next two games could be interesting.
Ranking look good except I think Dugway should be ranked higher.
Let's face it, after the three top teams, there are five or six teams with
similar chances to place at State. Let's have fun.
Where is the Juab boys in the 2A rankings? They had a great win against Rowland
Hall last week- not because of good coaching, but due to great players!
Ranking dont matter. It the way you play on the court. Any buddy can get beat
any night. It comes down to making it to state. You don't get a bid for being
2A is going to come down to the 1 and 2 ranked teams (Who pretty much tie for
first, they split region games.). SS and Manti.
I can't believe someone would suggest manila, tabiona, dugway, monticello, green
river, and salt lake lutheran to be ranked ahead of valley. Give me a break,
that is like saying utah state should be ranked ahead of Duke and North Carolina
because Utah State has a better record. Rankings are not just on records but
how good the team is. Crazy concept I know.
1 escalante2 rich3 panguitch4 valley5 wayne6

1. Escalante2. Rich3. Wayne 4. Panguitch5.
Valley6. Monticello7. Duchesne8. Tabiona
Oh yeah, the SS Badgers. Lookin pretty tough!
records don't mean a thing...remember WHITE HORSE last year ,. oh oh we almost
beat Provo at the summer b-ball camp ... then we played a 5A new mexico
team..blah blah blah..only to be put to school by a team which came to play
defense and shut em down..just bring it to town!!
Layton Christian is possibly the best team in 2A. Manti on a good night but
Layton Christian is only a half a step behind. Watch out for LC because they are
the real deal. Fantastic recruiting class. Coach Porter is no slouch when it
comes to recruiting. He only takes a back seat to Louis Wong of Timpview
I agree. Whitehorse came to State with a great record and high hopes and all
the blogs that they ruel, and then they met Steed and Co. from Piute that knows
defence and Piute knocked them out. Defence will win at State. Moqui's have
both offence and defence this year. Valley will be there. Wayne will be there.
Panguitch will be there. Dugway will win their region and will go to State and
be gone in 2. Groundhog day again for Dugway.
Monticello is not and should not be a ranked team. They barely beat Green River
the other night and they barely beat Whitehorse in Monticello (in OT). Other
than Wayne, they haven't beat anybody. And that win was early in the season.
Why is Layton Christian ranked above San Juan? SJ beat them at the 2A preview.
All teams would like to be ranked. Rankings are recommended by coaches during
the preseason and also by the various games played during the season. Coaches
are constantly questioned when they call in their scores. It is fun to be
ranked but it sometimes puts a monkey on your back. It doesn't matter if you
have a good or bad game, play in a weak or strong league - it is the outcome of
that last game of the state tournament that counts. Good luck to all the
players playing and hopefully your hard work and dedication will pay off on that
last night, last game of State. Boys and Girls in the 1A should be a fun
1A AND 2A BOYS BASKETBALL HASN'T CHANGED MUCH IN THE LAST FORTY YEARS FROM THIS
STANDPOINT---REGION 15 HAS RULED THE STATE TOURNEY IN 1A.REGION 12 HAS RULED THE STATE TOURNEY IN 2A.I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S
GOING TO CHANGE SOON IN 1A.BUT WITH RICHFIELD AND MANTI MOVING UP TO
3A NEXT YEAR, THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE IN THE 2A FIELD.ALSO---
I'VE SEEN LAYTON CHRISTIAN TWICE AND THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN IT ALL.MANTI AND SOUTH SEVIER HAVE ALL THE MOMENTUM AND REP. SO THERE LIKELY TO
MEET IN THE 2A FINAL.BUT---- DO NOT COUNT ENTERPRISE AS A TEAM OF
NOT.THEY HAVE FINALLY GOT THEIR OTHER STARTING GUARD 90% HEALTHY AND WIIL
BE 100% BY TOURNEY TIME.
Bear River Lady Bears beat Morgan. They're looking strong in a great Region.
Get over it! All that drama was over last year. The kids moved big deal. It
happens. It just so happens they play good ball. Kids move all the time chill
out and just watch your own team.
San Juan beat Layton Christian when one of their best players was out with an
ill be honest... South sevier, manti, and layton christian are way ahead of the
rest of 2a. south sevier has that shooter kid bishoff and lackburn cleaning up
the middle manti is led by aste, and layton christian has the most explosive
offense in the state hands down. it will come down to these 3 at state. the
pairings will be everything and 2 of these 3 should be in the final. my vote is
south sevier vs layton christian for the championship. that could shape up to be
one of the most exciting games in championship history
San Juan hasn't played 18 games the 2 Monument Valley games were jv games.
I am ashamed at the comments from silly people from Dugway claiming that they
should be ranked higher. I played ball at Dugway in the late 90s when we were
respectable and it is really embarrassing me to see these yahoos come on here
and make a mockery of themselves week in and week out. STOP EMBARRASSING MY
SCHOOL!!! Prove that you are worth being ranked on the court, which will not
happen until the state tourney. Try and win a game or two before you talk any
You are correct in that a teams record doesn't always indicate how good a team
is. Strength of schedule and region does play a big factor. But, you are very
wrong by indirectly comparing Whitehorse to Dugway. Whitehorse has a stronger
program than Dugway. They have been playing a much stronger schedule than
Dugway, they are competing in these games, and they have won games at the state
tournament and placed two years in a row. Reg 19 is not as strong as 15, that's
obvious, but it is no Reg 18 either.
2A STATErowlandhallenterprise mantino.simmitso.summitso.sevierlayton christiankanabfinal four--enterprise-manti-so.sevier-layton c.final----------pick um
Dugway will when there first round game this year since they play the winner of
region 17 #4 and region 19 #4and then they will play the winner of region 15 #2
and region 16#2 so you better be ready to play
Region 15 thinks they are the best But Region 16 is right there every year I
have seen years that they took 1st 2nd and 3rd in the state tourney. Tabiona one
of the smallest schools in the state will give any 1A team a run for there money
year after year.Just had to put a plug in for region 16.
This whole records matter, and Dugway thing...I can't come close to guessing how
many years Dugway has went into the tourney #1 from their region and lost the
opening game! You have to beat the tough teams! This is why Valley is ranked,
they have given Escalante, Panguitch, and Wayne very close games (within 5
points)as of late. They have beat the other teams in region 15. Look, region
16 had it's glory years for about 5 years, but look at last year, Escalante,
Piute, Wayne, and Panguitch were all top teams, Rich being the only non-region
15 team in the top 5 placings. Rich and Duchesne are good teams, they may give
region 15 some close games in the tourney, but Tabiona, Manila, ect. come on!
Oh year, and Layton Christian, recruiting is enough said. They have
recruited a good team! What a joke! Public schools can't do that at all, they
shouldn't be able to either. They will still go down to either South Sevier or
Manti when it's all said and done.
San Juan also had one of there best players injured against LC also!!
San Juan was also missing one of there best players against Layton Chrisitan!!
Region 16 had two top five placers last yearRich 3rd Tabiona
5thboth teams beat a team from region 15
THIS REGION 13 ARE THEY GOOD ENOUGH TO EVEN PLACE A TEAM AT STATE?
How can you look at someone's overall record and head to head record and rank a
team with a worse record and a loss to the team ranked below them higher than
the team they lost to? By the way, the answer to this question is that a
school's name and reputation (Bingham) is speaking higher than the actual
play...shame on the Desnews.
Will the Broncos finally make it to the state tournament- it sure has been
awhile- at least six years or more?
What is it with San Juan anyways? A school who always has powerhouse football
and volleyball teams in the fall, then seems to fall apart in the winter sports
of Basketball and wrestling. Then they are tough agian for baseball and
If my memory serves me right- San Juan has not made it to state since Coach Farr
left- at least six years- While he was there, they usually contended for the
region title and were a factor in state
San Juan's kids work hard, no question. But it is true that they haven't got
past the play in game in some time. Region 12 is the toughest region and it's
hard to get a good seed. Bad luck for SJ i'd say. Don't overlook them though!
Broncos have a tough program
Yes but both Rich and Tabiona lost to region 15 teams last yearas well...in the
rounds that counted most, making it Piute and Escalante in the Championship,
with Wayne playing Rich for 3rd/4th, Panguitch playing Tabiona for 5th/7th.
Region 15 still owned the spotlight!
Give me a first place and a second place in State over a 3 and 5 any day. Look
away region 16.
Their Team mascot is not the Groundhogs!
The Skyhawks are now 5-1 in region and are playing like the guys we knew from
last year from Spanish and Payson that were put together to start this new high
schoolprogram.Congratulations on working so hard.Good luck against Emery on
Friday!!!Lastly, I was looking at the records and feel that Bear River's record
is incorrect.Salem Hills beat Bear River in pre-season play. TAKE IT TO STATE
Incorrect info, Bear River beat Salem Hill 61-54. I am positive that the papers
and websites would have caught this mistake had it been a mistake. Bear River
has 1 loss.
Looks like the new coach at Juab is working out great- they got spanked by South
Summit last night and are near the bottom of the region. As for Salem Hills
Fan- Bear Rivers first loss came to Morgan last night- keep dreaming.
The 3-A tourney is going to be great! Some great rivalrys there, Wasatch,
Judge, Morgan, should have some great play. Watch for Parker and Carlile forWasatch, Tina, Martinez and Mancini for Judge. Some good match-ups,
anything can happen.
milford will beat valley tonight!!!!!
what would happen to region 15 if the tournment was not always played in their
back yard.. what if they had to stay in motels and eat out for every meal. Maybe
the tournemnt should rotate up north for a few years. what do you say
southerns, do you want to give it a try
The last time Piute took state, the tournament was held in Ogden. If you have a
state champion caliber team, I really don't think it matters where the
tournament takes place.
Turns out South Summit beat Juab huh. We have way more talent then they do, why
are we getting beat by 25?
You should have done your research before making a comment like that. Escalante
is just about as far from Richfield as many of the up north teams and the do
stay in motels and eat out every meal. So in the past 5 years it doesn't seem
to have had an affect. In fact there has not been a team in the past 5 years to
win it who hasn't stayed in a motel. Anyone else have an excuse?
milford, ha, seriously the team that lost by 25 to valley already this year and
just played a double OT game with BV, they are not a good team. Milford and BV
need to drop down to 1/2A with regions 17 18 and 19
Great point. You also forgot to state the other obvious- bad coaching. All the
new coach wants to do is run up and down the floor and focuses very little on
defense, which in the end ultimately wins games. Juab will be lucky not to
finish 5th in region, one place out of last. Maybe the boys and girls coach
should switch- the girls are currently in 3rd- might help- who knows
The rankings don't mean much. Why do you have to put down dugway. You don't get
to choose which region you play in. Just win the game you get to play. It a
shame that people come in here and dog on high school kids and thier schools. I
have seen team just get in and run the table. It who playing the best. I don't
know who the best team is. You will know that on the last day at state. We still
have half the season left. Go dugway.
Look for Gunnison to make some noise come playoff time. They just had a tough
lost against #2 SS but gave them all they could handle till SS put on a good
last quarter. They are shooting the ball well and getting confidence in
themselves. Watch out for an upset in the play-in game.
what happened to milford beating valley?
The comments are getting a little too personal. Tone it down or we will have to
send you to Beaver Co. to help receive the sportsmanship trophy.
how about those enterprise wolves they are just dominating with that crazy
little red headed point guard and that lurpy seven footer who can stop them..
will region 13 even place a team at state... PSH which team from region thirteen
will WIN state.... ENTERPRISE
Sorry but the girls 3A region 11 title is in the bag for GRANTSVILLE for the
second year in a row. But nice try Morgan and Bear River. GO COWBOYS!!!!
Watch out for GRANTSVILLE in the state tournament. They are going to surprize a
lot of people. GO COWGIRLS!!!!!!
All of this 1A and 2A Talk is nonsense.
You're right enterprise is dominating right now and the west kid is unstoppable
but that doesnt mean that enterprise should start getting to big of heads about
it. cause if they do they'll choke up at state. confidence is good yes but not
Valley is home to the sportsmanship trophies, come on, Beaver county? Milford
is one of the most brutal places in the state to play! As far as
playing the state tourney in Richfield, it's about as neutral as you can get.
Middle of the state, nobody playing on that floor all season (except for the 1A
preview that all 1A teams get a chance to play in.) It doesn't matter where
it's played, that excuse is as lame as it gets. A motel and eating out is the
determining factor? Please!
Provo would be a little more central for everyone. Figure it up. Right now the
average miles traveled between all teams playing in the 1A state tourney in
Richfield is 176. If they played in Provo the average would be 141. In this
type of economy every mile is precious right? Lets move it north!!!!
HAD TO COMMENT ON TWO THINGS.1- REGION 12 IS NOT AS SRONG AS
EVERYONE THINKS.2- GUNNISON SHOULD NOT GET THEIR HOPES UP FOR
AN UPSET IN THE PLAYIN GAME.ENTERPRISE OR KANAB--GOOD LUCK BULLDOGS!
If they moved the state tournament to Provo, Escalante would have to travel
about 250 miles, Monticello and Whitehorse already have to travel enough to
richfield. The only team that doesn't have to travel very far is Piute.
Enterprise can chill. They got killed by South Sevier and all they do is beat up
on their weak region 13 you can be proud of being region champs but it isn't
that cool. Those teams stink.
According to Mapquest, Escalante would travel 231 to Provo instead of the 146 to
Richfield. The schools from Region 19 would have more travel as well. Green
River would travel 15 more miles, Monticello 16 more and Whitehorse 15 more.
However, the teams from Region 16, 17 and 18 would all have less travel; while
the teams from Region 15 would all have a great deal more travel. By the way,
Rich and Manila both travel over 250 miles to get to Richfield. I guess we can
see which Region the UHSAA favors huh? It would be less miles travled for the
majority of the teams involved if the tourney was held in Provo. But
hey.....who cares about saving money anyway right.....lets just cut some games
from the schedules!!!!!
Hey bud in the end the best team will win no complaints! You can cry all you
want but the best team will win the state championship and the rest will be
forgotten! Quit crying about mileage! Who cares!
I realize the best team will win. I'm just saying Richfield isn't the most
central place for all the regions is all. And I care about mileage because
USHAA just cut from our schedules to try and save money. Richfield is closer
for two regions the other three it would be closer to have the tourney in Provo.
I care about mileage. Maybe you have all the money in the world....but I dont.
What facility in Provo are you going to use to host the tournament? I know the
1A used to be in Provo, but BYU would charge the UHSAA too much for the building
rental. Then you have to pay for parking at UVU.The most central location
would be Snow College, but they don't have enough motels and things to house
half the teams. Richfield has a nice facility, and I doubt that they charge the
UHSAA very much. I know all the score keepers and timers are all volunteer.
The fact in the matter is, most of the 1A schools are close to Richfield so that
makes it the most central location.
Wow, how about San Juan's two big road wins over the weekend. looks like they
are playing great D-fense right now. Beating Richfield by 19, and Manti by 2.
Looks like the next 2A champ will be most likely from Region 12, S. Sevier, San
Juan, or repeat by Manti, and maybe throw in Layton Christian from Region 14
those are my semi final picks....should be a great region and state tourney.
UVU hasn't charged for parking the last several times I have been there. I
agree Richfield does have a nice facility but I disagree that it is closer for
most 1A schools. Do the mileage yourself. It is closer for the schools from
two regions only for the other three regions Provo/Orem is more central. I
would be curious how much a facility like UVU charges as compared to the one in
It is true that San Juan hasn't been to State since Coach Neilson started
working with the program. They have a lot of very impressive young talent this
year tho, and it should be expected to see them as a very real contender in this
year's state tournament.
hard to tell how good enterprise is with their weak schedule. whats going to
happen when they play a team from region 12 or 14 that plays defense. or when
the moyle kid plays someone his own heigth.
Yeah well if you think having state at provo would really effect the outcome
then lets do it. Region 15 will still win :) Haha I don't know if you've ever
heard of this but we win off of pure SKILL down here!
Why are we arguing about the place where state should take place? It really
doesn't matter. The state will have it where ever they want it. So stop crying
RE:6:12 P.M. FEB 9, 2009.WHY DON'T YOU LOOK AT ENTERPRISES SCHEDULE
BEFORE MAKING SUCH A FOOLISH REMARK?PLAYING THREE 4A SCHOOLS TWO 3A
SCHOOLS AND SOUTH SEVIER ON SOUTH SEVIERS FLOOR IS NOT A WEAK SCHEDULE. HOW DID THEY FAIR IN THOSE SIX GAMES? 3-3P.S DEFENSE WINS
CHAMPIONSHIPS AND IF YOU WANT TO SEE GREAT D AND GREAT CONDITIONING LOOK FOR THE
WOLVES TO SHOW YOU.
Are you seriously arguring over mileage STILL? Please, Des News, come out with
new rankings so we can actually analyze teams again.
I never have said anything about playing in Provo changing the outcome. All I
was saying is that Provo is more central for most teams than Richfield is.
Region 15 does have some great teams this year and will probably take state.
However, you never know do you.....about the time you start thinking you are
unbeatable.....somebody steps up and proves otherwise!!!!
o heck ya
