This is great news for the University of Utah! I am so excited to go to South
Bend if this deal gets finalized. Go Utes!
Been there, done (and won) that.
Starting At Michigan this year will be cool, starting out 0-1 isn't, but such is
life when you play a top 10 school to kick things off! Congratulations Utah, I
hope you get to go to South Bend and learn what it's like to be in the "Almost"
same class as BYU.
This is a great opportunity for the Utes to make noise nationally. Lets hope the
Utes can get the deal done!
Been there, done (and won) that.GO UTES!!!
Have the Cougar defensive backs been discharged from the hospital after
recovering from multiple broken ankles after the last time they played? Brady
Quinn appreciates the school record for touchdowns in a single game. His eyes
still look like dinner plates when he thinks about how wide open every player on
the field was.
That is great news, Utah! One way to get around the Mountain and get some
If a game with USU is all that stands in the way of playing the Irish, I say
drop the Aggies if they won't move their game. Anyone you would replace USU
with on the schedule will almost certainly be a better team anyway.
Great for the Utes in their aims to play ND!My only concern is this
one game deal? Take one & one series like other teams in the conference. BYU has
done it with USC, ND, and other pretty major programs. A one & one series
legitimizes the MWC and Ute football. But this is good news.
Considering the source, I am not surprised that you don't have your facts
straight. The Cougars got drilled in 2003 and 2005 when they went to South Bend
to play Notre Dame. So much for "being there and done (won) that."However, the Cougars did beat a 6-6 Notre Dame team coached by Ty Willingham
in Provo in 2004, which is not the equivalent of beating the Irish in South
Bend. That was the highlight of a 5-6 Cougar team that year.
Yoots will get their fanny's handed to them.
Teams with tradition (like the school an hour south) have already played against
all the big boys.
See if you can get a ticket - who cares - GO COUGARS!!!!
Schools like Weber, SUU and Utah need to make these sort of 'dates' with major
college football programs. It is how the little schools survive, go to a big
schools home, get trounced and earn a paycheck. BYU gets these sort of programs
to come into their stadium so they can whoop on them, teams like Akron, Eastern
Washington and those types of programs. One day Utah can be just as big as BYU
and get a home date with a good school.
Actually, BYU got drilled when they played at Notre Dame.
Perfect time to play the Irish when they are losing lots of games. It is about
time the Utes start playing "name" teams. They want respect, but til recently,
Chris Hill keeps scheduling cupcake teams. Michigan and UCLA are a start. The
jury is still out on if the Utes will continue to improve schedules.
I wonder if the Gators would be willing to play the Utes, Urban knows what it's
like to play a bunch of nobodys every year, and it's not like he dosen't owe the
U of U for much of his success and helping him get national recognition.
My most recent recollection of BYU in South Bend brings to mind Brady Quinn
shredding BYU's secondary for numerous single game records and a "W" If you
want to talk about 1-2 starts, then yes, you have been there and done that!
Too bad Kyle won't be around to coach this game...
Please check the date on your computer...it's 2008. I know Yewt fans like to
pretend that it's still 2004 and that one good year makes a football dynasty,
but please do try to focus on the present and future instead of the past - that
is if it's not too painful. Here's to the Irish teaching the silly Utah
Hillbillies a lesson in 2010.
how about October 15th 1994 in south bend BYU 21ND 14 ?Ewettes fans are funny. I am surprised at how many can work a computer
What big boys have you played since Bronco came to town? Mediocre PAC 10 teams
Typical BYU hypocrite. You comment on "BCS Buster" because s/he was referring
to a game back in January 2005, but ignore that s/he was simply responding to
the 2nd post of the day, "AZ Coug", who was boasting of a 2004 cougar
[3-pt] victory 4 MONTHS EARLIER. Either that or regarding another W
over the Irish A DECADE BEFORE THAT.
First of all the U is going to be playing michigan this year at the Big House.
Michigan is not a top 10 team this year? This will be Michigans worst team in
the last 25 years and the U should win. ND has smoked BYU the last couple times
they have played. As for ND, they should have a great team in 2010. It will be
Jimmy Clausens senior year at QB. He was considered one of the top college
recruits in the last 10 years. Anyway, see you in South Bend. Cant wait to see a
Utah vs ND matchup on the nicest campus in the country. Go Utes!
BYU gets name teams to come to Provo so they can whoop them? PLEASE! Every time BYU has played Notre Dame it has been a 2 for 1 similar to the
arrangement BYU currently has with Utah State. Notre Dame sees BYU the same way
BYU sees USU. And the fact of the matter is if RES had just 5,000 more seats
Utah could get the same 2 for 1 with ND that BYU has had in the past. Getting a return game from the Irish has nothing to do with how good your team
is and has everything to do with how big your stadium is. Utah has
played plenty of great schools and beaten many of them too. In the last 15
years or so Utah has beaten nearly every team in the Pac-10 including USC.
Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Kansas, North Carolina, Georgia Tech,
Pittsburgh, Louisville have all been Utah opponents.
USU is a home game no matter where it's played. Take the ND game, even if you
only have 5 on the schedule at RES that year.
BYU fans are afraid!!! Not only is BYU trying to schedule
down(examples: dropping LSU from schedule, and playing a 1AA team three out of
four years since Bronco took over).Utah has been scheduling up for
the last 10 years or so. Better opponents means better recruits,
better recruits means better teams, better teams means more wins, more wins
means more money, more money means having the ability to get better deals with
better teams. Then the cycle repeats itself, only it is 'AT A HIGHER LEVEL' the
second time around.
At one time BYU was scheduled to play Notre Dame in 2010. They pulled out of
the series when Bronco and Company decided the best way to return to glory was
to play lesser opponents. The fact that Utah is taking their place seems
somewhat ironic. What will be interesting to watch is whether Utah
fans are willing to watch their team take on better opponents and not win as
many games or if they do what the BYU faithful did and stay home.
Is that AZ WHY fan married to his first cousin?I would suspect all the WHY
fans are calling channel 11 and asking them to schedule WHY Classic Football and
be sure to run the game in which the WHY beat ND.
Granted BYU is playing N. Iowa this year, but "Utah's schedule going up" Say it
now becuase after Sept 27 when the Yewts play "The Weber State University" you
wont be able to use that argument anymore.
"You hear that guys?! My boys are goin' to Notre Dame!! My boys are goin' to
At least Weber is an in-state school and there is an intriguing storyline to the
game: The Return of Ron Mcbride. BYU grabbed No. Iowa for one reason and one
reason only, a guaranteed W. I will laugh so hard if BYU gets
App-Stated on Aug. 30!Utah CAN say they are scheduling up: With
recent games against Cal, ,Oregon, Arizona, Texas A&M, UCLA, UNC, and
Louisville, and future games with Michigan, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Oregon,
Louisville, Washington State, Iowa State, Colorado, and Boise State. The Utes
are scheduling 'name-programs' that in any given season will be good teams.
Weber St. has been on our schedule for a couple of years now, which is pathetic.
However, RECENT history shows the Utes making arrangements to add perennial
powerhouse teams such as Michigan and Notre Dame, while the cougars have been
making arrangements to unload perennial powerhouse teams like LSU and Notre Dame
from theirs. I don't think we're losing any arguments by claiming to schedule
up. Cougar fans like "re: byu is afraid | 11:32 a.m." need to learn how to
argue with lucid points, rather than emotional ones.GO UTES!!!
Just a reminder. BYU grabbed No. Iowa because Nevada backed out at the last
minute. As for your so called "name programs", Iowa St., Oregon St., Washington
St., UNC. Good examples? Iowa St. lost to Northern Iowa just last season.
Oregon St. and Washington St. are middle to bottom PAC 10 teams. UNC plays
basketball. You can't use UCLA and Arizona as examples because those are the
teams Ute fans argue aren't very good when BYU schedules them. BYU has Northern
Iowa and Utah St. this year. Utah has Weber St. and Utah St. BYU has UCLA and
Washington. Utah has Michigan and Oregon St. Pretty similar schedules if you
ask me. In 2009 BYU has Florida St. and Arizona St. Utah has Louisville,
Oregon, and San Jose St. The schedules are pretty much the same for the next
five years in terms of strength. As for BYU getting App-Stated. Not a chance.
The Utes are the team in Utah that likes to do that when they lost to Idaho at
Rice-Eccles in the early 90's.
This is why I am proud to be a Ute. Anyone, anytime, anywhere!!Go Utes!!
OSU and WSU may be middle of the Pac-10, but they are closer to the top than
Washington is. Weren't they 9th place last year? And wouldn't you know it,
BYU's schedule is littered with games against the mighty Huskies in years to
come. BYU also has perennial power Army coming up in a few years. Wow.BYU's future schedules are not as good as Utah's are. They both have
USU and Boise so that is a wash, but Utah has Michigan, Notre Dame(maybe),
Oregon, Louisville, and Colorado which is on the rise thanks to Hawkins.BYU's schedules are nice, but Utah's are better.p.s. @
Michigan is tougher than home vs. UCLA and @ Washington is easier than home vs.
Maybe it is time for the D-News to add a line to the disclaimer about commenting
on here. It could read: Only 1 out of every 4 Ute-fan comments will be
posted.I sware, that is the ratio of my comments that make it on
these comment boards. I'm not abusive or offensive or off-topic or
misrepresentative, I never use more than 200 words, and I never post URL's. What gives D-News? If the deal with Notre Dame does get
finalized, it will be one heck of a game. Notre Dame will likely have a senior
QB and so will the Utes with Louks.
I guess E. Washington, N. Iowa, and E. Illinois were not available. OH wait-
that is BYU's schedule. And - "We want to go undefeated just like Hawaiiii
did!" You got that right! At least Utah and Kyle are doing it right. OR in BYU's
mind- At Michigan and hosting N.S.E.W. Iowa is the same(just in case - N.S.E.W.
means North, South, East, West - because fans don't know which team BYU is
adding or will add in the future).
BYU should try to play the best teams in the country. Maybe they could get some
players to transfer to BYU at halftime. They like to raid other teams while
players are on missions, so why not just recruit during games too.
I was the biggest BYU fan-season tickets for over 10 years. I died when BYU
lost-esp with Bosco at UTEP. Detmer does not have a bigger fan. All changed when
my daugter pitched for the U. I came to respect Chris Hill and love Mary Bowman-
girl's athletic director. I am the world's biggest Lavelle fan-best coach ever!
The difference is Lavelle would play anyone. Added Flor. State to open the
season-then played at Penn. St.-then played at UCLA. Must of helped because at
the Holiday Bowl they tied Iowa 10-10 when Hanks intercepted Detmer at the 20
yard line with a minute left. Iowa was ranked number 7. To start a season he
added Georgia with Hershal even though Lavelle had a new qb. Pretty good one
named Young-but that was not a good start. Lavelle said that to be the best you
have to play the best and he was never one to run from anyone. Even though it
meant playing only one game at the schools. I wish we could bring back Edwards
and Tuckett-can't! but at least bring back their courage in scheduling! This BYU
team can beat anyone!
I just finished reading Dick Harmon's debacle...er article regarding Riley
Nelson. I can't tell you how many comments I ready where BYU said they don't
comment on University of Utah stories. Perhaps this comment board regardign a
Utah story is a complete fluke? Get real!
Even a story in late spring can get Utah and BYU fans defensive and hate filled.
They even have to bag on USU and Weber State in the process. How can an
informational story turn into trash talk. News flash nobody outside
of the WASATCH front cares about Utah or BYU. Congrats for the Utes that is a
great deal to play in South Bend hopefully all the Utah fans attending the game
can have some class to repair the damage BYU fans have undoubtedly done by
acting like idiots in their prior visits to South Bend. And please
don't discrace citizens of Utah by doing the HAKA dance on SOuth Bend Soil.It isn't even may yet. Hold in your rage and hate over the summer so you
can let it go when the season starts. Do something constructive with your time
Is it time for BYU and Ute fans (and USU fans) to graduate from junior high and
end these childish debates? It's just a game. If your team wins or loses it
doesn't make you better or worse. Really, it's going to be OK.
Utah fans don't need to travel all the way to Michgan or South Bend to get
drilled. Come try Boise State who has beat you everytime you have allowed us the
opportunity to play (in Salt Lake ov course). Thank you BYU for having the guts
to play us home and home and for signing a four game series starting in 2012. We
are looking forward to it.
Dude ND beat UCLA last year!!.
Ya I saw how BYU whooped on BSU last time they came to Provo!.
Remember, this article is about Notre Dame. The Notre Dame that went 3-9 last
year so don't bring up Washington's Pac 10 finish as an argument for strength of
schedule. Colorado has been terrible the past few years. If you are going to
make an argument that Colorado is on the rise you can also make an argument that
Washington is on the rise. I also notice you brought up Army on BYU's schedule
but ignored Florida St. and Arizona St. I'm not saying BYU has a tougher
schedule than Utah. I am just saying that the schedules are very comparable.
P.S. Wasn't Louisville 6-6 last year?
Keep on talking because BSU is on the decline. You had some good years and you
had your time in the sun but reality will slap you in the face soon enough.
You've got Utah and BYU several times in the next 10 years and Utah and BYU are
going to slap you silly. I don't care what happened recently. The WAC sucks
and no one cares about the blue turf anymore. You're going to see BYU and Utah
continue to improve and the WAC continue to suck even more. It was good for you
while it lasted but Idaho will always be Utah's little annoying brother to the
You have every right to be excited. I am too. I would have loved to see a game
in 2004. BSU had a great team then, too. I hope the MWC and WAC play MORE
games against each other. Enough is enough with these two conferences seeking
out other schools in the BCS to boost their program. I would rather see two
teams from this region play each other ANY DAY OF YEAR!!! Best of luck and
bring on the Broncos!
Utah, don't worry about the number of home games. Playing USU in Logan is
essentially a home game.
Rich Rodriguez will be looking to start off his career right at Michigan and
will show no mercy against Utah. Utah will get stomped at Michigan like a narc
at a bike ralley. This is not the "Lloyd Carr" wolverines you played a few years
Hi Colin Cowherd! Who knew you were message board guy? Rodriguez will be lucky
to finish with 6 wins this year.
Utah has played big teams like UCLA, BSU, etc. People who are so clueless don't
realize BYU has scheduled USC, BSU, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Mississippi
and so on. They are scheduled to play Ohio State, Florida State, Notre Dame,
BSU, and UCLA. Anyone wanting to mock BYU for their "cream puffs" needs to get
a clue and a life.
So if BYU were to go 11-1 this year and get left out of the BCS and national
critics said it was because they played No. Iowa, your response would be "look
at who we played 10 years ago, and look at who we are going to play in 5 years!"
??????? Who cares what you have done? It's all about what you are
doing, and the Utes are scheduling Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Colorado.
BYU is scheduling No. Iowa and Army. Woo-hoo. Those games will be real
You fit into my statement "needs to get a clue." All I was saying was that BYU
haters never consider who they do play who are good, but can only slam them for
smaller schools like N. Iowa. BYU plays fantastic teams, and so does the U, but
you clearly missed my point. I said nothing of the B$ nor how important games
were 10 years ago, I merely was saying BYU schedules big teams, but people like
you refuse to want to like that because your blinded by red goggles. Since you like to diss BYU for N. Iowa type teams, I should point out N. Iowa
was undefeated until the playoffs, E. Washington was top of their conference,
and E. Illinois swept their conference, all in those respective years. If you
want to talk about cream puffs, BYU schedules far better of those than utah. N.
Arizona was run-of-the-mill, and Weber State, well we all know how bad they are.
Eat your own words.
Who is trying to prop up their D-1AA opponents as quality teams? So what if
those teams are good in their conferences. Do you think Michigan gets a pass
against App. State because they have won the D-1AA national championship
recently? No.Yes BYU has played a lot of good teams over the years.
So has Utah. The difference is Utah is continuing to schedule tough teams
while BYU is backing out of deals with tough teams and replacing Nevada with No.
Iowa, allegedly because there was nobody else(fyi: there were about 20 D-1 teams
with openings that matched the cougars opening after Nevada backed out). Also worth noting; Bronco recently said something to the effect of
'Hawaii has set the model for how to get to the BCS in the easiest fashion'
meaning he would like to follow their lead and schedule down so that his team
can get where the Utes have already been, the BCS. Who's the little
Utah is the little brother now like they have always been and always will be.
The only way Utah could ever surpass the level of BYU athletics would be if a
revelation was given for BYU to drop every sports program like happened to Ricks
College.Notably, most of the BYU posters here are kind of senseless
in their arguments as are most of the die-hard fans of any college program. But
at least they will fill LES and will travel to (or at least be well represented
at) away games.Better dead than red.
Yeah, BYU is bigger nationally in Gymnastics and Mens and Womens Basketball.
Please. Even though mens hoops has been down for a couple of years they still
have a better national reputation than BYU hoops EVER will. Everybody knows our
women's programs are better than yours, year in and year out. No contest. As
for football, well let's just say they have the same national reputation as the
bball team: Can't win in the post-season. Sorry, but you can't say
BYU travels well just because the Central Texas Stake has organized all of the
Wards and distributed FREE tickets to all of the members for the TCU game, most
of whom don't even cheer for BYU except for when directed to do so by the local
church leadership.'BYU travels well' is one of the biggest myths in
college sports. Of the few thousand people that cheer for BYU at an away game,
maybe 300 actually traveled from more than an hour away from the stadium they
are playing in. Utah will have as many fans at the Michigan and Notre Dame
games as BYU would if they were playing there.
BYU is Barometer U. Whenever BYU has beaten a "big time" program, that program
has been mediocre at best that season. Even if that team was ranked when the
game was played ('84 Pitt and Michigan for example). There is one
exception, when they beat Miami in Provo, Miami went on to be a good team that
year. That year was also my favorite Holiday Bowl. I remember everybody
wondering who they could possibly get to give BYU a good game. Final Score:
Texas A&M 65, BYU 14 The QB was the Offensive MVP, but not BYUs.
Michigan was not ranked at the time they met BYU in the Holiday Bowl. Pitt was
#3 in the preseason, but only won 3 games that year. You're right though.
BYU's "big" victories come over teams that finish mediocre ('95 Texas A&M, '04
Notre Dame), but I can't recall our team ever beating a team that finished
strong since the Freedom Bowl matchup against Arizona in 1994.GO
I seem to recall Texas A&M climbing as high as 15 in the polls back in 2004
before losing to Texas and Oklahoma. Oregon and Cal both won 8 games back in
2003, you can't really call that a down year for any of those programs.
I am glad that we are finally scheduling some tough games. As a Ute fan, I want
us to be in a position that we have to add on to Rice Eccles so that we can
attact bigger opponents to Salt Lake. My hats off to UCLA for traveling to Salt
Lake and to Tennessee for traveling to Laramie, Nashville and Rutgers. All of
their stadiums hold less than 45,000. I read in Sports Illustrated two years
ago that most upper teams in the Big 10, SEC and won't travel to teams unless
they live within a major airport and the stadium holds over 50,000. If our fans show up every game, we could add on another 6 thousand seats
bringing the stadium to over 53,000 specatators.Let's go Ute fans.
A one-time deal, huh? That's what it means to be the little brother. Yewts
busted the BCS (which was created because of BYU) and still don't get any
respect.Yeah Right:You can thank the Salt Lake Olympic
Committee for that stadium of yours that isn't even big enough for the Irish to
want to come play you there. Without SLOC the MUSS would still be pulling
splinters out of their heineys. Meanwhile, I'll thank all of the
LDS yewt faithful who were so good with their tithing. You guys made Lavell
Edwards Stadium possible! Thanks!
Pal, you lost that battle. The other guy got you. You are clueless because you
think BYU backed out of the deal with Nevada, but it was the other way around.
As he said, get a clue!
Hopefully this game works out. The more wins over BCS teams we can get, the
better, and we have to play 'em to get wins. This game would be good for Utah
and good for the Mountain West.
