"Nelson and his representatives initiated the contact." Did they? Or did BYU
contacts Nelson's coach first?
Don't forget we stole Lavell from USU too. He was a USU grad. We already have
ice cream better than Aggie Ice Cream: Ever heard of the BYU Creamery? Best
ice cream anywhere, period. Most of us BYU purists have been lobbying to give
the darker blue color back to the Aggies, not out of altruistic sympathies, but
because we are traditionalists. BYU was, and should always be royal blue.
Bringing back the old logo was right, but it still seems a compromise without
bringing back the royal blue too. Stealing is really not the right word though.
Nelson did contact byu first, via mail from his mission, so when a young man
chooses to change schools because one is the media darling potential BCS buster
and one is, well, USU, is that stealing? The boy has common sense. He could be
a big fish in a small pond or compete to be the big Kahuna riding the BCS wave.
I'm sure it wasn't that hard a choice, even with his USU family pedigree.
I smell a conspiracy! Come on yewt-fans, this is your chance to to
join the Ags in accusing BYU of impropriety with loads of innuendo, but not a
single fact on your side.Let the fun and frivolity begin!By the way, Rock, this was a stupid article.
This happens all the time. It goes against you and for you. This one gets
attention just like Ben Olsen did. Look how well he did after he left for the
TV coverage of the Pac 10. Not. Chances are, Nelson will flop and this will
all be for naught.Give the kid a break. It's a free world out there
and he has decided. When you compare programs, it's a no brainer.
Tim: Good question. David Locke on radio yesterday was convinced BYU initiated
the contact, and couldn't call them 'dirty' and 'filthy' enough for their
despicable contact. His rant seemed over the top to me, perhaps for-ratings
manufactured, since I can't see that any rules were broken in this incident. But
maybe I just don't understand the ramifications.
I love listening to USU wine about BYU. The cold hard fact is they are so bad
that no Cougar fan worries or cares what they think. Their biggest cry is wait
till we play you in basketball in Logan. Dude if you are any good you are
supposed to win at home. Take a look at BYU and their home record. Everybody
wants to compare their self with the best. Problem is USU does not even come
It's blatantly against NCAA rules for a school to contact a player about making
a transfer while he's serving his mission, UNLESS the player makes the first
contact. Do you REALLY think BYU would risk potential penalties by violating
that rule? Do you REALLY think they need to do that to get a good QB? I think
I guess we might as well patent mathematical equations, biological processes,
and the laws of physics - because USU doesn't want its shade of blue stolen.
Because it is their and only their shade of blue. Therefore, if you wish to
perceive the particular wavelength of light that produces "Aggie Blue", you must
pay a royalty to Logan. Also, students are not allowed to change
their minds about attending Utah State. Once there, they are locked into
attending. In addition all USU grads are obligated to repeat that other highly
performing teams in the state are too afraid to play them on their home field.
Apparently USC, OSU, and LSU are too afraid to play the Aggies in Logan. One
last USU rule, Aggies should maintain the illusion of a "rivalry" between
themselves and other highly performing teams in the state, even though the other
team usually forgets that USU is there.Have fun patenting your shade
Nelson's old high school coach bumped into a BYU recruiter and had a casual
conversation about how Riley was doing and the high school coach asked if BYU
had any interest. That's according to Riley's father. BYU did not take the
first step, the high school coach did and then went back to the parents and told
them BYU liked their son. Of course if people want to be negative about BYU,
they'll use this as another excuse.
BYU took their spirit? come on, this is a smart move by the kid. The article
states that Nelson will be surrounded by more talent in Provo, but the article
should state that he will be surrounded BY talent, not more. The Aggies have not
had a football program in years, and if Nelson has any aspirations beyond Logan,
he needs to be somewhere else.It seems as though Utah State spends so much
time and energy worrying about what everyone else is doing that they are losing
their own identity/spirit. Nobody is taking it from them.
Dana Bright encourages Nelson to come to BYU for the finest ice cream and to
"Ride the BCS Wave."First things first - I live in Provo and BYU
creamery is the ice cream of choice if you've the taste buds of an antelope.Next and most obvious - which BCS wave is Nelson going to be a part of
as a Cougar? As far as I can tell, when it comes to the BCS wave, the Cougars
are still standing on beach praying for a surfboard that isn't dropping from
heaven any time soon!Keep hoping, praying and dreaming Cougar Dana.
Let's be very honest with ourselves USU cares about Football the same way BYU
cares about basketball, granted we are far worse in football than the Y is in
basketball but nonetheless USU lives and dies by its basketball program. How
many show for football games? Exactly.Maybe there was a day when USU
was concerned with football. The last time I saw USU beat BYU was the weekend
before my LDS mission when USU won 58-56, surely this was a sign, actually
probably not. We haven't won since and I quite frankly have not seen the Aggies
be remotely competitive since I was there or since I have left. I no doubt hold
out hope but let's face it USU is third on the list in Utah, keep in mind Utah
is a 3rd tier football state at best. It is another blow for us but
luckily I don't define my existence by USU football, it would surely take away
my very life force and free agency. I have a deep dislike for all things BYU,
Provo, Brad Rock and the D News breath arrogance but again the reality is Riley
made by far the better choice for himself.
Come on Dana, enlighten me on which BCS wave BYU is currently riding? The last
BYU-BCS wave ended in Hawaii.
Nelson's dad said on the radio that BYU initated the contact. He spelled it out
very clearly. Bronco has preaced from day one that his program would be
different. I guess that is not the case. I have no problem with Riley becoming
a Coug, but the way it happened is underhanded at best.
BYU can have Riley notice that no top quality programs even showed interest in
the kid outside of this state USU and BYU are no name schools in sports they are
never in the top maybe one decent year here and there Riley is not gonna get
either of your programs anywhere so keep dreamin
Ummm read ESPN.com once in a while, dudes.
the self-righteousness of byu fans has long annoyed and continues to annoy me.
usu is a great school, not because of its football program (obviously) but
because of its faculty and students, the breathtaking beauty of cache valley and
all it has to offer. i hope nelson has a good experience at byu, academically
and athletically, but we aggies know what he'll be missing.
Hopefully someone here will notice that BYU didn't instigate the contact. That
said I still think these kids should still have to sit out a year so these kids
don't get bombarded on their missions.
I don't blame Aggie fans at all for being upset. It's a big loss for USU.
Whether or not Nelson blooms at BYU remains to be seen. I know some USU fans
hate BYU for things like this, but I can't blame Nelson for wanting to join a
great BYU football program. Basketball players want to be a part of Aggie
basketball for the same reasons.
Well - we've all heard it, "You better be careful what you wish for, because you
just might get it."He's gonna have a tremendous challenge on his
hands with the competition he'll be surrounded by. He may have already had his
last college start (as a quarterback). He may get some clean up duties his
This isn't the first time Bronco has preached doing things the "Right Way" and
then did them the complete opposite. BYU initiated contact, which
goes against their own policy on recruiting missionaries.
Riley's dad said it was BYU who initiated the contact, Riley's dad said he
initiated the contact. Frankly, I don't know who to believe, but I strongly lean
towards Riley contacting BYU. Lets look at the facts- BYU has no trouble
recruiting quality quarterbacks. They already have JuCo QB's lining up to play
for them. Riley plays(ed) for a team consistently rated in the bottom 10 of BCS
teams. Who had the bigger motivation here? Judging by the article he was the
perfect stopgap between Hall and Lark/Munns and would pretty much be guaranteed
playing time. Alright, look Aggie fans- would you rather have Riley have a
chance at success or have him toil in a program in the utter dregs of failure?
Frankly, with Jaycee leaving, even your basketball team is starting to sink into
mediocrity. (I've always enjoyed AggieBall. I was biased towards Spencer Nelson
days being a friend of his family) So, all in all, I'm happy for Riley, hope the
remainder of his mission goes well, and look forward to seeing him play when he
It doesn't matter who initiated the contact. After a player has been away from
a program for over a year they are a recruitable athlete according to NCAA
rules. Everyone needs to stop making a big deal out of nothing.
Beyond this incredibly mind-numbing and pointless argument about recruiting,
this article brings up a very good point. It is a very sad commentary on the
state of USU athletics when one of their most prized sons - and fans - so
readily transfers to another school. It's the equivalent of someone
like Bryan Kehl, who grew up a BYU fan his whole life and whose BYU roots run
deep, signing with Utah. From what I've seen, Riley Nelson looks
like a gifted athlete. I don't think he's the second coming, but it's definitely
a good get for BYU. As a Cougar fan, I'm happy to hear this news, but as a USU
sympathizer I feel bad for the Aggies. Just when you think they've hit rock
bottom, somebody throws them a shovel.
That is a rather bitter article. As a player, Nelson and his family are looking
for the best playing opportunity that can be found. BYU is always looking for
the best possible LDS players for every position. It is an obvious fit for both
Nelson to play in a passing oriented program and BYU to be interested in an
great potential quarterback.
For all you mission minded athletes I hope you are aware this is a real issue.
Coaches go through a lot of effort to recruit and often times lose athletes
across this two year period. Granted other athletes move on besides
missionaries, but it may end up costing them a year of eligibility. There are
benefits and cost to each program of allowing missions, but as my sons
approached college coaches this seem to loom big in the picture. Especially with
smaller programs that after a year or two of training worried about losing good
athlete to more prestigious programs like UCLA, USC, and yes, BYU. This is not
a non issue as some have commented. It has a real impact on mission minded
athletes and thier ability to be recruited.
Mark, his dad did not know who contacted who first that's why he said the media
should check with BYU. Riley's dad DID NOT say that BYU initiated the contact.
Clean out that ear wax!
Come on Rock, Dick Harmon has already thrashed this story!Don't jump
on the bandwagon just to get views and comments. One thing that
Rock pointed out that Harmon will never point out is how unoriginal BYU is.
They have already stole the Aggie ice cream idea, Rock! The day that BYU comes
up with their own ideas and create their own inspiring thoughts for THEIR
school, is a sign of the 2nd Coming.BYU needs a slap in the face of
reality. They are also a nobody school. In this BCS era they are just as small
as USU. Hate to see Nelson go, he was what I was excited about in
USU football. I am more mad at USU athletics for letting him get away. How
does that happen!?
Hey Rock, I got a red truck and now a whole bunch of people in town got red ones
too, I can't beleive it! get real, and do you think BYU sits around and dreams
about how they can get all that talent at USU to go to provo. Maybe the kid
didn't want to hear the church he served for 2 years being made fun of 24/7 by
the classy ag fans.
The talk between the Nelson's and the "Y" had been on going from the end of his
Highschool day's, nothing new about that...Riley had several options the "Y" was
one of them. Get off the "Wana be Riley envy train" and live your owen
lives...The kid has skills or D1 schools would not be after him. Is Riley going
to live up to all the arm chair QB's that blog, never!!!!
Aren't we all whiners? BYU complains about USU being whiners but every year BYU
whines about what bowl they're playing in or whining how they are snubbed by the
NCAA selection committee. Whining about the BCS and whining about USU whining.
etc, etc. When it comes to whining BYU leads by example.Riley made a
smart move for himself. No Aggie denies that. But Riley gave Aggies fans
something they haven't felt in years and thats hope in the future. As
far as the ice cream debate, I've tasted both and I have to say Aggie Ice cream
Bronco Mendenhall is fully invested in unethical conduct. This guy is a
joke...preach one thing, then do another. What a hypocrite.
A. Attention all BYU haters. Bronco initiated the contact and is a filthy
hypocrite. No one at BYU practices what they preach and they're all secretly
immoral. (some not even secretly)B. Attention BYU fans. Riley
Nelson and his high school coach initiated the interest in going to BYU. What's
Bronco supposed to do? Should he have told the kid he's not interested in a
high school all-american?Please choose choice A or B depending on if
you hate BYU or not.
Don't blame Aggies for being upset, but....kid can do whatever he wants. So he
goes on a mission and decides he'd rather go to the Y. Okay, fine. It's a free
country. I went to Ricks for a year and decided the University of North Carolina
was a better school for me and I left for the east coast instead of staying for
another year in Rexburg.
I love how people sit here and debate who initiated the contact. You all seem to
be positive it was BYU or Nelson, when in reality you have ZERO evidence of
"Raised in Logan, he was Big Blue right down to his mitochondria. His father
played football at USU, and his grandfather is Rod Tueller, former Aggie
basketball coach and athletic director."Not that it really matters,
Brad, but mitochondria come through the mother, not the father. :)
Really, this whole transfer thing is a non-story. The kid's on his mission and
wants to change schools. Big deal... happens all the time. For the kid that
has options, it ends up being a free transfer and can mean more competition.
People complaining about this need to step back from their fandom
and do a little reality check. Moaning about one player transferring when it
happens all the time? Seriously, is that what your program and life is built
How do you know that BYU initiated the contact? Are you a personal friend of
the family or were you there when this happened? There have mixed reports about
the whole thing, so unless you know for a fact, you should hold your judgements
about Bronco. But that's probably not possible, because the haters just love to
jump to conclusions about anything and everything that goes on in Provo.. Oh
and what was the other time that Bronco did the opposite of what he preached?
Please enlighten me?
Everyone calm down. It is OK if BYU assistant coach Higgins contacted Riley's
High School coach to get the process started. Also, there is not a
problem contacting him while he is on his mission. Missions after all are not
that important. Even the church does not believe missionaries should be fully
focused. What is more important saving souls or playing football? Bishop Bronco
said it best after Collie choose another university "it is a shame that rival
schools do not see the big picture." I for one am glad he sees the big picture
now. But for heaven sakes, it is UNACCEPTABLE for return
missionaries (Ben) to leave the Lord's school to go to another school. Just
don't get me started on this one again.
your not a USC fan your a Ute.Cougar or Aggie fan. Stop being sellouts to a team
that is 2 states away, just because they are good. I don't understand Utahn's
mentality when it comes to sports. You guys are the first to stand up for your
home-state and the first to be sellouts and rip it down. What's the obsession.
BYU-Logan has taken over from Ricks College as the farm team for BYU Athletics.
"Missionaries regularly reference BYU football when they're in the field; they
seldom talk about USU." Umm.... I'm not sure where you are getting this...?
Perhaps you mean that BYU has a larger fan base and therefore you would expect
BYU football to come up in conversation more often than USU football??? I don't
know?Anyway, I'm not sure Nelson did make the best decision. While
he may have been the best QB at USU in 2006, he may not be the best QB available
at BYU in 2010. He may end up sitting the bench while at BYU, while he could
have been a starter at USU. We'll have to wait and see who emerges as the best
QB in 2010. Hopefully he WILL have a great college football career at BYU.
Did any of you even listen to the interview with his Dad? He said that he was
called at home by BYU coaches. Look, you can't blame him for leaving, but it is
a fact that he was recruited on his mission. A is A. You cannot change the
facts. This article is rediculous. The promotion of BYU in this newspaper is
pathetic. And to state as a fact that he was not recruited on his mission is
ludicrous. Do some reporting, not just kick a program when they are down. This
newspaper is rediculous. Cougar fans, just admit it was shady. I don't here
anyone saying it is against the rules. Just that BYU claims they don't do
something when apparently they actually do.
It's well known the byu initiated the contact. byu coaches contacted Riley's
high school coach to get the ball rolling to which Riley responded. It's a
complete stretch of the truth to say byu did not initiate contact. They
should have taken Nelson over Lark in the first place, Lark was a mistake.
Patent it: This is more an issue of trademark law than patent law, not that
there is any case here. Just sayin'.
I going to type this real slow for those who won't read newspaper articles but
just sound out the headlines. B Y U d i d n o
t i n i t i a t e t h e
c o n t a c t.
Given the fact that Ray Guy may not even be there when he gets back, Riley has
to look out for himself. At least BYU knows how to help returned missionaries
make a successful transition. Do I think he is the be all end all QB? Not
really, but he obviously has confidence and skills, so let him go after his
dream. Nobody in Aggie blue or yewt red cried when Ben Olson made the same
choice, so get over it now. USU football is not good. As for the Air Force royal
blue, I for one much prefer the color the cougs stole from Logan.
Utah State University is an incredible institution of higher learning located in
the far more beautiful Cache Valley. With its emphasis on academic excellence,
with international acclaim in advances in agriculture and space exploration.
Over the recent years of athletic struggles, USU still enjoys the
undieing support of its student body, aggie alumni, and the local community.
Too some, it reminds them of what BYU used to be in the early 70s, an incredibly
peaceful campus focused on learning. Today, many students who have been unable
to attend BYU or the UofU, have sought out Utah State and gladly found its
campus environment far superior to its neighbors to the south. We are proud to
call it our alma mater. To borrow from LaVell, "Better to lose and
live in Logan, than to win and live in Provo!" Go Aggies!
Riley will never play in Provo. How many transfer quarterbacks ever play at
their new schools? I can think of just one, and that's Colt Brennan.
. . . And that's only because he fit the offense. Is BYU going to change their
whole offense to accomodate Riley's ability to run?
How many transfer quaterbacks ever play at ther new schools? Ummm, are you
serious. I can think of two in the past two years. Max Hall and Tommy Grady.
Is to the state of Utah what Canada is to the USA. We barely know you're there
and the only time we acknowledge you is when we need something from you. Have a
Since when did going to the Las Vegas Bowl become the BCS Wave???HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.Well done zoobies.
After this stunt by BYU, I hope they never break into the BIG TIME. Nelson is
good. BYU was not interested in him when he graduated from Logan. They signed
the kid from Southern Utah (St. George.) Interesting. Mendenhall is winning so
he is insulated from any criticism from the Church or anywhere else. Don't kid
yourself. For all his postering and talk of dedication to the Church, he has a
streak of larceny just like everyone else. But now because he is winning no
one cares and he is protected.
What about Max Hall? Isn't he a transfer from Arizona State?
Hey tstu, I can think of another MAX HALL.
As a "True Aggie" I wish I could cheer for USU football. I cheer for both USU
and BYU. Riley made a better choice. If he stayed at USU he will continue to
struggle with a new coach or one that has a bad track record. He would have
lousy recievers and linemen. He might not ever play again, but if he does he
will have quality players and a team who knows how to win. If he starts for BYU,
he will have a better chance of the making the NFL than at USU. We
have no idea what spiritual path he is one while on his mission. He might feel
that BYU is the only true and living team to play on, who knows. Should
Do you think that Mendenhall is ever going to admit to doing anything wrong.
Not in a million years. He is perfect in his own mind and BYUs mind. No he did
not approach Nelson, his assistants did. That gets Mendenhall off the hook. He
can say that he was not involved with a straight face. I am a BYU fan but not a
Mendenhall fan after this. I hope Nelson made the right choice. Do you think
these other quarterbacks at BYU are just going to lay down and down for this
kid. I doubt it.
This whole thing is making me so excited for college football. I can't even
wait until the Iowa Hawkeyes enter Provo to play our big Blue. Oh EXCUSE ME-I
mean the other Iowa team-the North Iowa Buzzards. Raise the roof cougars!
Is this kid left-handed? He may beat out Max Hall if he is, because he will see
the left side of the line crumble nearly every play and be able to run like the
Max Hall is a transfer QB.
How many transfer QBs ever play? Off the top of my head, two pretty good
QBs at BYU were transfers-Max Hall transferred to BYU from ASUSteve
Sarkesian came to BYU as a JC transfer
BYU always has and always will skirt the rules. BYU and its fans have always
been a joke anywhere outside of Utah County. At least the FLDS arepen about
their beliefs, at BYU they hide and and mislead about everything. Get a life
there is more to living than cougar athletics. Their only claim to fame is a
national title against the worst Michigan team in a century. BYU is average at
best, and Plaisted will never make it in the NBA
BYU doesn't need to steal Aggie Ice Cream; they already have BYU Creamery Ice
Cream, which is far better.Anyway, USU has never been a BYU rival in
my book. BYU should feel no remorse in stealing colors or players.
What do you mean you hope we don't break the BIG TIME!!! We are already there
man! Didn't you see us last year in the Vegas Bowl as we dominated UCLA!!! You
guys probably dream of Vegas Bowls. It is the best bowl game before Christmas!
And we won in the National Championship bowl game in 1984.
Probably the most famous championship bowl game ever.
Beware of pride
Yawn. No sour grapes here, he wanted to go to byu, let him. byu wants to
contact people on their mission, then deny it, let em. Sure athelets like RN
are hard to come by, the kid has heart. But I say have fun with your 5'11"
150LB "QB" *cough strong safety cough*.
I've been here at Utah State for the past 4 years, and I didn't come here for
the football. I'm sad to see Riley go, but in the long run he will have little
to do with the success or continued failure of the football program. And all this talk about stealing colors, and Utah State "losing it's spirit"
is a heap of rubish. If our self worth as a school came from our football
success we would have ceased to exist a long time ago. Utah State is a great
place to get a good education, and learn who you are, and that is why the great
majority of the students are here.Football is not a religion at USU.
(and it's a good thing it's not:)
tstu. I can think of a few more: Max Hall, Ben Olson, Troy Aikman, that's
just a few off the top of my head. Think before you display your ignorance for
all to see.
Why are Cougar fans so boastful? Yeah, they got a decent football team, an
average basketball team (that has a losing record to my Aggies over the last 5
games played) but the worst are the fans that think they are better than anyone
else. Take Riley, he is a great competitor, a kid that has heart and
athletically he probably made the right decision. But geeh, show some class. You
win with grace and you lose with grace. We lost a good player, you won a good
player, just dont rub it in. Shows no class. Guess they dont teach humility at
I don't think its a question of legality. Of course BYU can contact Nelson. The
question is, is it right to. BYU being a school backed by the church has an
unfair advantage on persuading young missionaries that "this is the place".
They should not be recruiting kids on missions.
Are there Aggies really arguing that their institution is better, even in part,
because Cache Valley is PRETTIER? Be that as it may...News flash!
Both campuses are still in UTAH!!!That's the biggest downside to
BOTH of them!!!
Vegas Bowl? You kidding me. You are totally big time. NOT!!! If you want to be
big time, you better bust into the BCS bowls. Until then, nobody in the nation
cares about medium-size time. Still a small fish in a big pond.
BYU Athletics did steal the Aggies colors, but they figured that is was ok
because USU wasn't doing anything with them...:)
Um tstu, you asked how many transfer quarterbacks play at their new schools? I
can think of one off hand....Max Hall.
Funny ... gotta give you that. But us not doing anything with the colors is only
half truth. Football ... we have a football team? :) But basketball? We are at
least at your level but probably a step above. Now, I know that is not going to
sit will with a lot of Cougars. You can go on about your home winning streak,
about going to the NCAA tourney this year (where you didnt do anything) but over
the last five years, the Aggies have done more with their blue against your
blue. So, I'll give you the football but we're still above ya'll in basketball.
I'll admit USC is a better athletic program but two things. O.J. Mayo and
Reggie Bush. At least we don't pay our athletes.
to Tstu:Isn't Max Hall a transfer from Arizona State? He's doing pretty
I think this is a knock and hopefully and "knockout blow" to Brent Guy. Three
years in Logan and zero progress. Any Aggie web developers out there that can
start the "firebrentguy.com" website? In closing I'd like to bare my
testimony...that BYU coaches and fans are jerks that do not show the integrity
that their school professes to ooze. I know this with every fiber of my
Wow! It seems like everyone's getting a little worked up over this one. Rock,
your insinuation that BYU will go after Old Main is ridiculous: BYU actually has
plans to go after the Bluebird Restaurant next. It really is
unfortunate that this is getting so much negative publicity. Though I'm a BYU
fan, I really like USU. I love the campus up there and yes, aggie ice cream is
the best in the state. That said, I get tired of the Aggie
Inferiority Complex (especially because I don't see a need for them to feel
inferior). My Aggie Family members despise all things BYU, and it seems that
aggie fans never get enough of bad things happening to BYU. I guess that a part
of me hoped that USU fans were a little more chill than BYU and Utah fans (who
both blow things way out of proprotion and make the rivalry less enjoyable).Oh, and Cloudy Eyes, I have a suggestion for you. If you're going to be
sarcastic, make sure you are CLEAR in what you are saying (you're post name
matched your comments). Collie was always at BYU, and Olsen left during the old
MAx Hall just lost his job. he's nothing but a subpar quarterback anyways.
Anyone with talent will beat him out
Calling BYU fan self righteous is very judgemental and self righteous. Good
Very interesting. I love how you all preach about Cache Valley, your very
"prestigious" university, and even your ice cream, telling BYU students to get
over themselves, when in fact you seem to suffer from little-man/little-brother
syndrome. Live your own lives. Get out of ours. I don't care one bit about
your international agricultural acclaim and your emphasis on academic excellence
(as though that's something some universities don't focus on?).Here's the deal: You like Logan, I like Provo. Riley chose Provo, you're not
Riley. We don't really need, want, or care about him, but he had an opportunity
and he took it. Stop being his little, whiny brother. Finally, do
you honestly, really, (again--honestly, really) believe that USU offers a better
academic exp. than BYU? If so, put down your Cache-Valley glasses and do some
comparative research. Take into account the quality of students who come to the
respective campuses, the admissions requirements, graduate programs, departments
and schools such as Business, Management, Accounting, Law, PR, English, History,
etc. It might be eye opening to those of who you judge which
University to attend based on ice cream flavor!
As with ANY story about BYU, the BYU-haters will find something to pick and
complain about -- Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk
a little, Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little moreBronco is
a great coach and an honorable man. He was completely above board in expressing
BYU's interest in Riley Nelson, first to Riley's coach and then, to his parents.
Riley's parents were the ones who thought this was an important
enough decision to contact Riley while he was still serving his mission.I don't think there was anything wrong with what Riley's parents, his
high school coach or Coach Mendenhall did.Just because a young man
or woman is serving a mission, doesn't mean they shouldnt be making plans for
after their mission. There is certainly time on P'day for missionaries to make
plans for school, in fact, most missionaries who are returning to school right
after their missions, have already applied for readmission before they get back
home.People who think that most missionaries don't make
after-mission plans during their missions are simply naive.
Riley was not highly recruited out of high school, and I am still wondering why
this is a big deal. I think he is an good athlete, but its not like BYU is
getting some 5 star recruit. USU does have an inferiority complex when compared
to BYU, but BYU feels the same way when being compared to PAC-10 schools...No
respect. But USU has to be the whiniest bunch of fools I've ever seen. After
one season with USU, Riley probably realized that playing for his hometown team
wasn't all its cracked up to be, and when he goes to BYU it will be a better
situation for him...but not all its cracked up to be.
The issue of who first intiated contact in these discussions is irrelevent. If
BYU was indeed approached by Nelson, Donkey Mendenhall & Co. should've responded
by thanking Nelson for his interest and said they would gladly pursue further
discussions upon release from his full-time mission-period! Not that Nelson is
going help BYU anyway. His game is not suited for BYU's offense and the
competition for playing time will be intense. In the end, Nelson will have
wished he stayed at USU.
Higgins - Doman- Logan Coach - Mr. Nelson - Mission President only then Riley
Nelson. That is how the communication went according to the Father himself. BYU
started the contact bottom line. Illegal- No different than Broncos stated
believe - yes We hold ourself to a higher standard????????????????
I think that the first day of BYU introductions they must teach, "No matter what
the argument is, just say that they have an inferiority complex. The logic is
flawless. There is no base for the argument, and there is really nothing the
person can say. It is pure gold. If you are backed into a corner with what the
outside world calls logic, just tell them they have an inferiority complex. And
if that doesn't work, just tell them that BYU is unique and other people just
don't understand it because they aren't spiritual enough. Now go out into the
world and produce baseless, illogical argument, with absolutely no merrit and
have a clear conscious because you have made it into this school, meaning you
are set for life." Sorry, no inferiority complex. Some people just don't
like you for a lot of different reasons.
What is all the FUSS? If he is so good why didn't the Y recruit him out of high
school? Besides, he is no Brian Johnson! Go Utes!
What all of the BYU-haters conveniently want to ignore was that Riley's parents
were the first ones to contact Riley about BYU's interest in him, and it was
Riley who made the decision to pursue the opportunity while he was still serving
his mission.I have no doubt about Riley's commitment to his
missionary service, nor about his desire to make sound decisions about life
after his mission. What I do doubt is the naysaying know-it-alls who
somehow think it's any of their business how and when Riley can make decisions
based on what he thinks is best for him.
So who are you the fan police, a person can be a fan of any team they want.
Regardless of what you say, I'm an SC fan and a Laker fan so what, live with it.
Lets use the tried and true test: If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck
it's a duck!.
You'll admit USC is better, we don't need you to admit anything 107 NCAA
Championships is all you need to know. You wish you had a back like Reggie. You
don't pay your athletes? where do you think that 10% goes every month!.
Brad Rock forgot to mention BYU is changing its name to the Aggies. These things usually work out in the end and who knows maybe USU will have its
greatest ever QB show up because Nelson bolted to BYU. The next Brett Favre
might have just got the break they needed in Logan.
Wow, what a big fiasco over someone who is suppossed to be focusing on a
mission. It's really messed up how the line between right and wrong gets
trampled on when it comes to stupid sports in the church. Another missed
opportunity for BYU and the church to stand for things that should really
matter. Nice one, it gets harder to cheer for these guys every year.
People! Its Ok! Everyone at USU actually wants to be a BYU student anyway. So
in a strange way, they all secretly want BYU to win. By the way,
BYU DOES have a better version of USU Ice Cream: its called Lavell's Vanilla.
We have cuter girls, too. Go Cougars
"I'm an SC fan and a Laker fan so what"The first step to recovery is
admitting that you have a problem...
Well, I don't believe that one player is going to make or break a football
program, maybe basketball, but not football. As a loyal Aggie, I'm sorry to see
Riley transfer, but it's his choice. A few years back, when Shawn Bradley
announced he wasn't returning to BYU after his mission, many of the BYU faithful
had a knee-jerk reaction. But in the long run, what difference did it make?
Probably not much! Riley's departure, in the long run, won't make much
difference in USU's football fortunes either.
So I can assume I can call, converse and plan for my future just as much as a
football player looking for a place to go to school. On my P days I can spend
time on the phone negotiating where and what I'm going to do when I get home.
Thanks BYU this is going to be much better than I thought. I was under the
impression I had to fully concentrate on my mission!.
I just finished reading all this trash-talking about Nelson. No one
knows exactly what happened. Too much hearsay, which is not admissible
Look....Riley had a Great JV career at USU and is ready to step up....he is
better than Max Hall and Bronco made a HUGE mistake not going after Riley in
High School......he is the real deal and will star at BYU! USU is a
joke when it comes to Football....and is far from number 3 behind BYU and
Utah.......SNOW College could beat an all star team from USU, Weber
and SUU.....fire Guy and get Snow's Coach!
So who do you think contacted Rileys parents?. Let me guess BYU.
How could BYU take something that's been missing from Aggie football for
years? Most Aggie fans don't even support their own team, which is
not a real shocker, since only the die-hard fans are going to support a
perpetual losing team. When was the last time Utah State had a
Schools are constantly picking up guys on the fringe. I seriously think BYU saw
an opportunity to pick up an extra Qb as an insurance policy and Riley was
interested. No different than picking up an extra lineman or two. I really don't
think they plotted to get this kid in any way. He fits more in a Utah style
offense than a BYU offense. If they are seriously looking at a return missionary
5'10 QB to lead them so be it.
"Wow, what a big fiasco over someone who is suppossed to be focusing on a
mission."Get off your high horse and stop being so judgemental. I'm
sure if you were to talk to Riley you would find that the short time he spent
reading a few emails and pondering his decision had very little, if any, impact
on his missionary service. If you served a mission, can you honestly
say that you never once thought about what you were going to do after you
mission, while you were still a missionary? If you can, then you're a very rare
Ya my problem is we win!
to start the color blue no matter what shade is not owned by anyone person. you
can not put a copyright on college colors. besides if cant find anything better
to do then pick fights about colors and sports may be you should get a life. we
do live in a free country so if this young man wants to transfer to a different
school so be it.
I totally agree: Zoobies please read.
BYU has stolen more than this from USU over the years, back in the old Skyline
Conference (1938-1962) Utah and Utah State both won championships in football,
but BYU never could. So when the WAC was started BYU would not vote to let USU
in the WAC because they knew they could not beat them. There were not many good
conference options and as a result USU football has been in the tank for over 40
years. Thank You BYU! The official reason for not wanting USU was that there
would be too many teams from Utah in the same conference, LAME!!!! Do you think
the ACC cares how many teams it has in the state of North Carolina? So why
should the WAC care how many teams there were in Utah. Then BYU and Utah bolt to
make the mountain west a conference no better than the WAC. Only then does USU
gets its opportunity to join the WAC. USU is on the rebound, but it will take
some time. We need to keep the record straight.
I doubt it, but I'll humor you. What you do on your mission is
between you and the Lord. If you spend a little time planning for your future
and can still devote your whole heart and soul to your missionary work, that's
fine. The two ARE NOT mutually exclusive. As with
everything, however, the Lord teaches moderation.
He wanted to leave Utah State and go to BYU. Let's be honest, BYU is a much
more successful and, from a competive player's standpoint: enticing football
program to be at. It's true. Utah State is a basketball school (sports-wise).
BYU is a football school who has enjoyed some success at basketball on the way.
The USU football program is a mess. If he wants to go to BYU, ok then. If you
were a decent football player with the option and weren't wearing USU glasses
when deciding, which would you choose? Be honest....Why are Ute fans even
responding? Their coaches have done this too. And the BYU coed jokes? Have the
continual losses to BYU and other MWC opponents (UNLV!!??? ...Seriously!?...)
reduced you to name calling? Your football team certainly can't do the speaking
on the field, that's been certain. This happens ALL....THE....TIME.Go ahead and take the ice cream crown, USU. You can eat all you want while we
play in another bowl game after beating the Utes....again....
Why are the Cougar fans always seem to be like they have to defend themselves by
making themselves look better than everyone else? Even when you guys stunk with
Gary Crowton after his first year?....WOW...you guys got some issues down
If Riley could get USU a couple of 6 win seasons he'd be a hero forever up in
Cache Valley. At BYU he might not ever start, and hated if he wins less than 8
games a season. Unless he takes BYU to a BCS bowl he'll just be one more good
quarterback in a long line of good quarterbacks from BYU.
I can't tell you how many missionaries I have fed in my home who after being out
on a mission for awhile just want to go to BYU because of the standards. They
love their missions and want to maintain that same feeling. Plus so many of
their comps. who they have become close friends are going to BYU. Just talked
to a returned Missionary that served in our area that is headed to BYU in the
fall because of these very reasons ( even though he had fullride tuition etc. in
his home state.) Somethings take on more meaning in life when you are serving
Why don't you find a nice UCLA blog to troll? You can discuss
Reggie's running (from the NCAA rules) with the Bruins.Nobody here
really cares about you or your football team.
As a Ute, I could care less about this. It doesn't matter what color the
uniforms, what they say on them, or who is in them, If they're on the other side
of the line of scrimmage from the Utes, I hope they lose.I know,
this story was not about the Utes, but I am!
I am a true blue Cougar fan and I think that Bronco's recruiting of Nelson is
dispicable! I can understand why USU fans are upset. The BYU coaching staff
should take a long look in the mirror to hopefully see how repugnant their
actions have been. It's time BYU athletics reflect our Mormon values!
This is way more fun that watching an actual football game. Nice article Brad.
Let's throw a little more raw meat out there. Next article should be on how BYU
coaches teaching their players how to get away with holding on every play.
For those of you who have any interest, here is what actually happened. When
Riley was in high school, as fantastic of a player that he was, no D1 school
really gave him a look, other than Utah State, I am sure Rod T. had a little
something to do with that. Utah gave him a look and said that he could walk on
but wouldn't guarantee him anything. BYU wouldn't even talk to him. From the
beginning, Keith Nelson wanted Riley to go somewhere other than USU, that is no
secret. He can see where the program is right now. It is going to take years for
USu to gain any respectability in football. Favaro has always been aware of the
Nelsons wanting Riley to play for a bigger school. When Favaro bumped into
Higgins, he asked him if BYU had any interest, and when they said they did, he
contacted Keith Nelson, who in turn contacted Riley, and Riley e-mailed the BYU
coaching staff. At that point, BYU could pursue Riley, and eventually they
offered him upon his return. It really wasn't all that sinister. Only time will
tell if he made a good choice.
Oh my gosh,it's off with his head.Eventhough the greatest player ever decides to
leave USU:--when Guy's team wins 7 this year all of the cry babies can get dry
To missionary mom....that sounds like a valid reason to go to BYU...you can't
beat that...that definitely should be a reason why one attends BYU or any other
school for that matter...forget all the other stuff. To those others...quit
making excuses! Heck, Riley wasn't the only one we lost...we also lost a
Poppinga to them too.
I'm a USU fan and student, but I also grew up a BYU fan and still support them
in football. But lets be honest, Riley isn't going to be that great. He was good
here because the best we had before was Leon Jackson III. I could go out there
and play better than that, and I've never played football in my life. Riley will
be decent, but BYU doesn't need any more QB's. They are pretty set there for the
future. And secondly, nobody up here cares about football. We go into the season
expecting to win 1 game, and if we win more then the season is a success. We
count down the days until basketball season starts because we are a winning
program in basketball. We are equals with, if not better than any program in the
state of Utah in basketball, but are far behind in football.
Soon you will Aggie football rise to power in the much more exciting and
athletic Western Athletic Conference, to be admired by millions on ESPN, while
BYU and the Utes continue to wallow in mediocrity in the MWC, nowhere to be seen
on TV and no big time bowl opponent except number 6 in the PAC 10. There is no room to grow at BYU or Utah, no hope and no challenges, but
everything is possible for USU. Riley blew his chance to shine and to stand for
I lived in Logan for 6 months and attented USU. It was the worst 6 months of my
life. Iy is a great school, but the people in Logan are the most arrogant snobs
that I have ever met. If your great grandpa did not help settle the area, they
don't want you to be there. I left after one semester and headed for the
University of Utah. I would run from Cache Valley too if I were Riley. Great
For fans who don't like brawls, please avoid Romney stadium on Friday, October
3rd. I will predict it will get ugly and additional USU security should be on
hand. It will be reminicent of BYU entering Laramie to play the Cowboys on a
cold November day. Romney Stadium on Oct 3rd will make Rice Eccles look like
Nelson is only 6'1" and was not recruited by BYU, Utah or others. How good is he
really? The only USU transfer that ever amounted to anything was James Dye back
in 1996. I suspect he will be even less valuable as a QB after his mission (it
took John Beck 3 years to get his arm back after his mission). If Nelson was
6'4" and had a rocket arm then this might be an issue but I doubt the kid will
ever play for BYU - other than a spring scrimmage or two.
I am sorry that you had such a bad experience in Logan. My experience there was
just the opposite. But while we are on the subject. I have honestly never met a
normal person who loves Provo. I know a lot of people who love BYU and swear
that it is the greatest school in history. But those same people admit that
Provo is a little backwards and weird. I am totally serious too. How many of
you BYU fans actually want to live in Provo?
the name Max Hall comes to mind as a transfer QB who played at his new
school...but I am sure he is the only one. ;-)
As a graduate of Utah State I hope the whole football team transfers. What a
waste of money that could be spent on education. Turn the football stadium into
an aquarium- you'd get more people there.
RE: RossIt wasn't BYU and Utah that didn't want USU in the old WAC.
Why would they object? Don't blame BYU for this. It was the other schools of
the old WAC that didn't want 3 schools from Utah. If you're looking for someone
to vent your hatred on try ASU or Arizona. This wasn't BYU or Utah's fault.
Another in a long line of Rock written anti-BYU articles. He just can't help
Ross:Really reaching far into the Way-Back-Machine there, aren't we?
I don't care who you cheer for, you can't blame 40 years of ineptitude in
football on BYU. I'd say that 40 years is long enough to find a decent coach
and get things turned around.Could Care Less:Really? I
think you really do care, just like all the other yewt fans who are closet Coug
fans. Otherwise, why even post that you "don't care?"Much to do
about nothing:Beck always had the arm--even immediately after the
mission. His maturity is what caught up to his talent and he became one amazing
player. Plus, let's not try to minimize the hurt caused by Nelson's departure
by saying that he won't be that good. If he were coming back to Aggieland you
would greet him as the savior of the program.RE: JRizzy:I live in Provo and I love it here. Great town. There are losers in every
town if you want to look for them. People being a little backwards and weird is
not mutually exclusive to Provo. I've traveled many places (over fifteen
countries) and could say that of every town I've been to.
RE: Oct. 3rdDon't worry. Most BYU fans are already aware of USU's
policy of selling more tickets than they have seats for during BYU games. Most
will be watching on t.v. Hopefully nothing foolish will happen among fans. The
rivalry doesn't need idiocy. If this is a threat on your part it doesn't speak
well of you or Aggie football. Remember this whole thing was Nelson's decision.
It wasn't the BYU fans. We don't blame you for not being happy with his
decision. Something tells me the BYU football team will still show up in Logan.
And I suppose Jupiter was alligned with mars, and aquarious was in the fifth
house of Saturn. And while Rileys high school coach, bumped into Rileys Bishop
and Rileys dad bumped into LaVell Edwards while talking to Dallen Oaks and
Bronco's wife just happenbed to shopping and bumped into Rileys mom, it all got
back to Rileys misson preisdent and while Riley was going door to door it just
so happened he ran into Bryce Doman's cousin and they got talking and everyone
connected and that's how Riley got the message BYU wanted him. Amazing!
After Ryley committed playing for USU, His father Keith whom had a contract with
USU as a Orthopedic Dr. lost his contract with USU. As soon as that happened I
felt that Ryley and his family had one less reason to stay faithful to USU.
This is my guess as to the true underlying reason behind the transfer?
Outstanding comments, one and all. Brad Rock is loving it!! BYU has always been
stacking the deck with QB's. what's interesting is that Elder Riley Nelson would
want to come to BYU and HAVE to compete for the starting job against other true
HS all american QB's at BYU. At USU he's guaranteed the starting job. Similar
issues happened for BYU's current backup Gaskins who was set to start for the
Nevada Wolfpack after his mission but he too opted for BYU on his misssion but
had to go to a JC b/c Nevada would not release him from his scholarship. So,
time will tell. Don't rule out Steve Covey the 3rd as a future BYU starter as
well. It's too bad that JV teams are no longer allowed to develop these players.
It would be great to see these young RM QB's all succeed and get the opportunity
to really see what they can do on the game day field.
I love it, can you all tell this is the off season nothing better to talk about,
but it's all good. Football fans this time of year are all temporarilly insane.
Can't wait for the season to start and we can be totally insane.
When I heard that David Locke was coming back to the SL market, I cringed. He
was always the biggest BYU-hater I could remember. So when I heard he was
coming back, I could already hear the anti-cougar sentiment being conjured up.
So, take whatever the man says on his radio program with a grain of salt.
He has a built-in hate, and really a nasty hate at that, for anything BYU. He
must have been tortured as a child by being forced fed BYU Creamery items. I could care less about either program's football teams, being a Kansas alumni
(and still basking in a national championship). But if there were a rules
violation, it must and will be fully investigated. I'm not a betting man, but my
money says Bronco isn't stupid enough to risk his job and the program's
reputation on an above average QB with potential, especially when they already
have other QB's with equal potential. Just doesn't add up. I don't hate
BYU, but I'm not a cougar homer either. But this David Locke character has some
serious resentment issues against that team down south he needs to work on.
USU is getting what they deserve. Back when the Y went 1 and 25 in bball the
only win was against the Aggies. If it hadn't been for that one game the Y
would have gone winless. As always GO UTES.
I feel extremely sorry for USU. I empathise with them. It wasn't long ago that
BYU looked to be on the skids and to add insult to injury losing a 5 star
quarterback in Ben Olsen. I hope that they can get their program back to
prominance. Bronco has built the BYU program back up and recruits are chosing to
walk on to BYU rather than getting a scholarship at Stanford. That is a
testament that the program is on the right track. I have been to USU and love
the atmosphere and it is a wonderful campus. The spirit I felt was akin to BYU.
I hope that the programs will get turned around so that recruits will not only
choose to stay but that they will be able to steal a few recruits from BYU.
BYU coaches did initiate the contact with him and he talked to Riley's Dad, who
has also confirmed this. If BYU coaches had not talked to Favero, this would not
have happened. Cause and effect Maybe you glorified high schoolers attending BYU
could figure it out but then again, maybe not.
Lady, I served a mission and loved it. But I did not want to go to BYU after
visiting the campus and talking to people there. Guess what, I went to Logan and
loved it, still live here and love raising my family here. Maybe its not a
matter where you live that makes you feel good but how you live. And you can
live righteously anywhere you live ... yep even in Cache Valley.
The whole argument here lies with the fact that USU fans are mad he left, UU
fans are bitter he didn't pick them. I remember the night he chose where he was
going and there were 2 hats on the table USU and a red hat (U of U). That may be
the reason there is so much bitterness. BYU isn't all they want to be but that
program will help him as a person.STOP ALL THE WHINING,
he'll get hurt and beat out!
Point well taken. We still have to see though how Riley will turn out in Provo
since I think winning the starting job there will be a lot more difficult than
here in Logan. I do think he'll do well because he seems like a kid that plays
with heart and you gotta love that. Thats why it hurts to see him leave. Having
said that, he is an adult and can make his own decisions. Noone really knows how
it happened so we cant even judge, who contacted whom first. Time for BYU to be
excited to get a competitive kid and time for all Aggies here in Logan to get
past it. I am sure there will be a player in basketball we will take from under
the Y's nose. I guess Tai Wesley is a good example who I believe will be better
than his brother by the time he is a senior. It happens all the time so
time to move on and time to stop the whining (both sides, cougar fans and aggie
Aggie Fans are not the only one miffed about the colors. I'm still scratching my
head why BYU changed their colors? Having graduated under the original cougar
blue...I have to say I'm a bit miffed. I wish they would change back. At least
they brought back a similar logo. Aggies are going through a heck of
a time with their football program. Personally, I hope they can bring it back
to a higher level. It would make the football season much more enjoyable having
some more competition around.Rise and Shout!
BYU didn't take anything. Riley initiated the contact and it is his decision.
Yewt fans are just bitter because who wants to transfer there?
I have no problem with BYU offering scholarships to kids on missions as long as
the student initiated the contact and that BYU didn't actively recruit the
player. There are very few quarterbacks that transferred schools and
made a difference for their new team. Steve Clements came from Texas to BYU and
was supposed to lead the Cougars to the promised land. He had a very generic
career, mostly as a backup. Ben Olsen is another quarterback who's
choice to transfer (from BYU to UCLA) seems to have been a bad choice. He would
have replaced Beck and likely done as well - perhaps better - than Hall did in
2008. Now, he's the UCLA backup.Transferring quarterbacks just never
seem to do well, for whatever reason.
Riley's dad, Keith, will NEVER admit it but HE initiated contact. Keith Nelson
is a doctor, he's not the official team ortho but he is a doc that has provided
medical services to many of the players and been allowed to be on the sidelines
for years. That is until Riley came to Aggieville! When Keith Nelson's son
Riley signed his letter of intent, he was no longer allowed on the sidelines!Thats right Cache Valley. BYU did not steal your prize, Your esteemed
head coach chased he and his father off campus. Mis-treat the dad and the son
will follow the dad off campus!End of discussion!
If BYU is so good at Basketball why won't they ever come to the spectrum to play
Um, I have been to that stadium for a BYU/USU throwdown and I can tell you that
USU fans were some of the most classless fans I have ever encountered-- and that
includes Wyoming fans. Utah Ute fans are docile and mild-mannered in comparison.
So, you're telling me there will be hostility, vulgarity and classless behavior?
What are you going to tell me next, that the sun rises in the east?
I listened to the radio interview, as I'm sure almost everyone else has as well,
and Nelson's dad DID say that a BYU coach contacted Logan's coach FIRST! And
then contacted Nelson's dad who then contacted the mission president. Then the Y
coaches contacted Nelson directly. Very behind the scenes, but it was contact.
Just another half-truth from Bronco. Also this article is so (Aggie)blue it's
disgusting. It's like Bronco wrote it himself.
Cache Valley needs to chill out! I moved there from California and graduated
from Logan High School. The peer pressure to attend USU and NEVER BYU was
unbelivable! Whenever I mentioned BYU as a possibility it was met with "you
don't want to go to BYU"...Congratulations to Riley for deciding
what is best for HIM! He is doing what I wish I had done many years
ago....transferred to BYU!I'm now back in Calif. and I know LDS kids
in California that after seeing the BYU football video "Tradition - Spirit -
Honor" have said "that is where I want to play football". I would be honored to
have a son play for Bronco Mendenhall!
Sam Keller was a transfer from ASU. He led, along with Former Head Coach
Callahan, Nebraska to what is arguably the darkest period in Nebraska Football
History. On the downside, Keller probably represents the epitome of things gone
wrong. However, Max Hall is a transfer. This opportunity has helped him as
well as BYU. Why not Riley?
.... is not always greener on the other side. Who knows if that is good move by
Riley? Good luck to him but it could be BYU's version of Ben Olsen.
I am from Provo but I attend USU. I just had to comment that it was suggested
that USU guard Old Main because BYU was coming for that next. Have you seen the
new alumni center? Slap an A on top of that and you have a mini old-main.
Also, BYU no longer has an agricultural program so I'm not sure where their ice
cream comes from but it sure isn't from their own cows. This is why Aggie Ice
Cream is unique, whether it is better is all a matter of "taste" (but of course
it is). Since BYU has taken our colors, our building, our quarterback,
our ice cream ideas, and everything else I'm going to vote that USU is not BYU
Logan but that BYU is actually USU-Provo.
Except for 4 Years of College I have lived my entire life outside of the Utah
Vally.Let's get some perspective. This kid just upgraded from a
horrible, just barely D1 football program to a Top level mid-major program. If
there is a possibility of playing time at the better school who doesn't make
that move?Ben Olsen did the exact same thing going from a mid major school
to a BCS school. You gotta make that move if it's there for you and you're
considering a career in football.Nothing about this is the kid's or
BYU's fault. It's USU's fault for having a terrible program.
TO: tstu....Does the name Max Hall ring a bell...? didn't he transfer from
Arizona State? Isn't he starting quarterback for BYU? Just wondering.
Riley has been out of school over 18 months. He is free game for anyone.
whether you like it or not no one did anyting wrong.
David Locke says things to generate ratings. People like to listen to
ridiculous arguments, and Locke is great at making everything controversial. I
still resent Karl Malone for pushing him out of our market because Locke
insisted that Malone wasn't perfect. And Malone wasn't perfect, either. He was
a choker and held the ball too much. He was still great, and we might never
find an adequate replacement.
Where do you suppose BYU would be today if they had been banished to the Big
west for 40 years? Suppose it was USU and Utah picked for the WAC it would be a
different story. Quality Players used to settle for BYU as their last choice,
when nobody else wanted them, because they had the worst team in the state. I
remember the Glory days of the old Romney stadium, with Merlin Olsen and company
just rockin the opponent every week. The people in Logan have waited a very long
time to get a football power back, so long that most Utahns don't even remember
that USU was the perennial football power in the state. But the Ags are on track
to rebound, they are stocking the ranks to make a comeback and bring some of the
old Aggie football excitement to the state.
Hey, did you clear this article with KOBE...???I thought everything
you did was for KOBE and now you're writing about someone else. Two
wasted columns. If all you want to do is sell papers pick up the
sports beat for the National Enquirer, or start writing about sports.
In 1901, USU faculty adopted ROYAL BLUE and white as the school colors! They were originally called "the Farmers". Likely stole the name from Texas
A&M Aggies when they switched to Aggies.Anybody know when USU
switched to Navy Blue? This info is from their own website!Hmmmmm....pot calling the kettle black!
It's funny all the whinning that goes on and on in these comment sections.
Bronco (BIFF as in Back to the Future movies)is to arrogant to ever admit that
his staff contacted Elder Nelson first! And who cares who was first? Both were
wrong to do this while one is serving a mission. This whole thing is a wait
and see situation...Will Riley even play quarterback at the Y?Will
the Aggies beat the Y?Will the Y be BCS busters? NOWill the Utes
upset the Y?In the end BYU and UTAH will finish with about the same
records as always and the Aggies will probably win one game. And in the end who
That other running QB from Connecticut named Steve Young did pretty well in
Me thinks this is much to do about nothin.. Ain't bein' old grand. Go Brooklyn
beat them Durn Yankees.!
I will guarantee you that if Deron Williams pulled a Riley Nelson to go "play
for the bigger, better team" in LA, these same self righteous cougar fans would
be in an uproar. Of course everyone around the country would say, "Well, its a
no brainer. Stay in pathetic little Utah where they have never won a
championship, or go to a bigger market and win". How do you like them apples?
RE: Mckay Football may not be a religion at USU, but basketball is.
(heh-heh) USU is a good school. Logan is a charming place. Every school in
the country has a few idiots, unfortunately. I'm also convinced that some
people post on this site just to cause grief and turmoil. I'm not saying BYU
doesn't have overzealous fans, but therr are some "great pretenders" out there.
If I was him I would contact BYU too if I wanted to have a Career in the NFL. I
mean what is your future at USU vs BYU? Then again what about diminished skills
after the mission? There are NO GUARANTEES! As for the colors thing, They should
have left it alone, and BYU did change the color of their helmets which USU
still had white helmets. BYU needs to go independent!
Every Aggie football game i've been to, i've seen the same problem. All the kids
on the team are great athletes, but cannot seem to put it all together. Everyone
on the team probably could have gone somewhere else and been a second or third
string player, but they decided to come to USU and be a big fish in a small
pond. If Riley wants to "play" for BYU, maybe it'll help out my Ags to be a
better team. I'm okay with the transfer, but don't even think about touching Old
Much like the rest of you I am not shocked to see byu recruiting people on
missions. It was nice to see an article about byu stealing USU's
color. That was really uncool of them considering the spectrum of colors they
had to choose from. Why didn't they go for red and white?
Can anyone answer me why byu will not come to logan anymore for basketball? That is pretty pathetic of them...byu will play division II
schools at home but wont play at Utah State...byu: dont be afraid of
utah state, it makes you look bad since your trying to get in the pac 10 (lol)
As someone who recently was looking for grad schools, I saw the top 100 listings
for colleges. Under the category, "Highest Acceptance Rate," USU and UVSC were
on that list. This is not a good category to be in. That means that basically
anyone can get into that school. It's not competitive, which means their
academics likely aren't the highest. I talked to many friends who attended USU
and they said they weren't pushed all that much. USU isn't a high academic
school, comparatively, despite what any Aggie will tell you. I've also been
there and watching basketball was the only thing anyone did there. There was so
much BYU hate it was uncomfortable being there. The guy is a talented
football player. The guy is very smart. USU is not a football school, neither
do they have high academic standards. The guy made the right choice going to a
place that fits him better. I stopped caring about USU because all I
feel from them is hatred to BYU, and that is totally wrong. Get over yourselves
Aggies. Form a rivalry with Boise, they care about that part of the world.
So tstu. Steve young never ran at byu. Get a life all you byu haters.I guess it
gives that big powehouse football program in logan more to complain about.I
would rather sit on the bench at byu than play at utah state. o gaggies.
Utah goes to a bcs and plays a weak team. Lets see heisman, doke walker,.
outland winner national champs. Steve young super bowl mvp. By the way what
proof do you have byu talked to him first.I guess when your a team from s.l.c
you see everything in red.Right yewts
RE: Smart Alec TrebekLike I said, stop living in the past and
dealing with hypothetical "what if BYU had been left behind 40 years ago..."
situations. It didn't happen and the Cougs don't make excuses for their
The pathetic, saggy, baggy, aggie cow college is a glorified high school with
athletics (academics and morals) to match. Who could blame someone for escaping
the Cache Valley?
It's too bad Riley's leaving, but the real problem Utah State has is Brent Guy.
Until they can get a coach who can do something besides 1st down: QB draw, 2nd
down: screen pass to the right, and 3rd down: run it up the middle, even though
there's 19 yards to go for a first down, they will never win more than two
games. And about this outrageous comment: "We have cuter girls, too."
Here's the problem: BYU used to have very beautiful girls until a huge portion
of the student body started coming from the east coast and California. Now
they're just like any other school. Aggie girls are mostly UTAH girls, and
therefore, are much cuter. Anyone will concede that point.
These arugments are a waste of server space...Hey 'Not Impressed'
did you know that USU and UVSC are state schools and byu is not? No
state school has any requirements for enrollment until it gets full. This must
be hard to understand but its very simple. Mormons from Utah and
outside of Utah want to go to byu so they need requirements to get in unless
they expand.byu will continue to be no better than USU, Utah, &
Weber as long as their tuition remains competitive to our state schools. Who here agrees byu should discontinue all sports programs? byu is an
embarrassment to Utahns and Mormons. They should focus on academics. Also, byu
sports is a waste of tithing.
Justin: does it really matter how cute or uncute the girls are at byu? They are
all married...don't see why this is worth discussing.
Once again, BYU makes the church look bad!
I went to Logan High and I graduated from USU and I really must say that I can't
blame Riley for making this decision. USU football is depressing. Hopefully
things are starting to turn around, but I don't get my hopes up for that. Riley
made what was probably the best choice for him, but he did sacrifice playing
time for this. Believe it or not, players from USU do go to the pros and some
are very successful. Riley could have made a name for himself at USU. I just
hope he does well. I cheer for any local Utah player. On a side
note,I like sports where every team that plays has a chance to be a champion. No
matter how well BYU plays, they will never play for the national championship in
this era of college football. BYU can lose 1 game all year, win their conference
and their reward is to play the 5th or 6th place team in the PAC 10. Boring!!!
Because of this set up, I don't like college football.Go USU, go
BYU, go any team that can be a BCS buster. BOOO BCS! It is ruining college
This comment will probably be lost in the myriad of thoughts others have
responded with already (btw I'm old enough to be a fan of all the Utah
schools--I suppose that's a rarity nowadays in this era of extreme, "in your
face", partisanship). When I think of great Utah State quarterbacks,
I think of Bill Munson. Sorry he wasn't mentioned.Another great
Aggie, though he played basketball was Wayne Estes. Both these guy were super
athletes (now deceased) and deserve not to be forgotten!!
Discontinue sports at BYU and go the route that BYU Idaho has gone so more
academia is maintained. BYU-Idaho has a great Intramural program that allows so
many more students to partake in sports. Also all you die-hard BYU
fans don't fool yourself or justify the fact that BYU coaches contacted a
full-time LDS Missionary on his mission to recruit him. I think the Missionary
handbook doesn't allow contact like that. They didn't break NCAA rules maybe
but how about mission rules. I can hear it now "it's OK because it is the
lord's school and he will serve a mission as a missionary on the field"But all things being equal I hope if the move is better for the athlete then
he does well and plays well. I have to agree BYU has a better team than USU and
he may get a lot more exposure.
It's not about Riley Nelson, it's about all the fundamentalist Cougs out there
that just can't get enough of thinking that Bronco makes them feel the "spirit"
and that's why they love him....he's a football coach and that's it. He might
be running a campaign for a position in the Seventy, but the rest of us see
right through him.Get over it Cougs, you have a good football
program that will never be anything more than mediocre outside the mountain
I'm rooting for Riley to complete his mission. It would be great if BYU
actually had an athlete on its roster that didn't come home early. GO COUGS!
RE: CougarKeithNFL future? 1. Riley has zero chance at the NFL
with his size2. Do you even know what's going on outside of your bubble
down there in happy valley? This year's NFL draft, USU=2 BYU & Utah =0 If you
can play, the NFL will find you and with several key players in the NFL right
now, they certainly know where USU is.
Well I must say Charlie Peterson Still holds the record over McMahon at BYU...
Riley You will learn quick my friend
As an impartial party, this doesn't look good for BYU. Just because they you say
you are holding your institution to a higher standard doesn't make it so. I personally think this is some damage control or a preventative move by
Bronco and the BYU AD. Even if Riley never steps foot on the field for them,
they have essentially taken him away from any potential match up they may have
with USU down the road. Can you imagine the meltdown that would occur if USU was
to somehow beat BYU with a local LDS kid at the helm?
I started my college education at one University, and finished at another. No one accused me of making any church, school, institution, faith etc.
look bad.20 year old kids change their minds.Sorry you
all have to live in Utah.Makes you miserable, doesn't it.
"Justin: does it really matter how cute or uncute the girls are at byu? They are
all married...don't see why this is worth discussing."Haha-good
It's truly embarrassing to see how someone choosing to change schools has become
(to some people) a right vs. wrong decision. As a USU alum and fan, I am
dissapointed that we lost what we thought was our QB for a couple years, but he
made what was the best decision for him. Good for him.Anyone who
thinks that BYU is in the wrong for responding to a recruit who was interested
in them is downright silly. By assigning your own set of rules to the situation
and then judging the school or coaching staff based on your own set of rules is
exactly the "holier than thou" attitude that you'll probably accuse BYU of next
week. I think I'm jealous - like many of you on this board appear to
be, but not jealous enough to appoint myelf as the judge for what is right and
wrong in what I'm sure was a very complicated situation.
The sad part is after all this wasted time discussing Nelson he probably will
never even play...I went to all the USU home games and heard about
him in high school. I realize he played those couple games as a true freshman
but I'm honestly surprised byu even cared to "hire" him. Does anyone
know if he is a walk-on or not?Oh and 'BYU delusional' don't forget
about Weber State in this year's NFL Draft:USU: 2WSU: 1byu: 1Utah: 0LOL byu it seems like this decade is getting
out done by Weber for football players going pro pretty embarrassing considering
byu doesn't even acknowledge Weber. Weber's had 3 offensive lineman get drafted
in the last 4 yrs. Isn't WSU Div I-AA?Then again WSU soundly beats
byu in ogden in basketball over the last 30+ yrs. Since byu wont go to Logan for
bball, when are they gonna stop going to Ogden too. I think WSU is like 10-5 at
home vs these Aggie Color Stealers.
Go for the gold Riley. But I really wish he would have looked up what "Red"
could have done for him. I think he would have looked really good in crimson!
I agree with Dog. If your gonna transfer how can you over look the Utes. Utah
seems like the obvious choice if your not going out of state. The
dumbest part of Nelson was he was recruited by Stanford and Washington. Ending
up at byu, that sucks. He shoulda taken some notes from Ben Olson who went on to
UCLA.But don't bring that up or byu fans will go off how their mtn
west champ cougars played the 5th place team in the pac 10 in the las vegas bowl
(is that one of the new bowl games?)and barely beat them.Olson
didn't even play, a freshman quarterback started the game. UCLA's starting
runningback, receivers and quarterback all were injured and didn't play in the
bowl game.UCLA started out 11th in the nation and by the end of the
season they basically had no one left. I'm sure byu fans would tell
you they are ready to school UCLA in bball too...
I just read all the comments from this story and read a lot of the comments
from many stories and I just have to laugh at this guy that writes in all the
time saying he is a USC fan and has to belittle Utah and all the sports there.
The question I have is, "Why, if BYU, Utah and USU are so little and nothing in
your eyes, do you even read anything dealing with them"? Wouldn't that be like
us poor BYU fans reading all the news and commenting on web sites from the likes
of some Junior College? If USC is so great, go to their web site and gloat about
how great they are and get bashed by the "big boys".
I made the BYU Icecream for 3 months, it is excellent quality, we don't need to
try and beat Aggie ice cream when we already have it going for us.
Uh, why is anyone talking about usc in these comments? should we discuss florida
state too? seems just as irrelevant.attn yall: this article was
meant for bashing byu, no one cares about usc.usc didnt copy usu's
colors or recruit usu's players.overall if you really think about it
it makes perfect sense that out of our 5 universities that 2 are red and 2 are
dark blue and one is purple.i think the one odd ball should become
dark blue too. oh and uvsc will be a univ this july so they should go with red
as their color to make it even or just go with usu blue like byu.
I am a Ute fan, I cannot stand BYU/TDS what ever you want to call them. Bottom
line. It is his life, his decision and most importantly his right. No matter
who initiated contact, what was said, mission rules, what ever. Let the young
man go and live with his decision. If I were a talented young quarter back.
What would I do, stay with a program that has struggled for years, has mediocre
recievers, mediocre offensive line, and plays in a conference dominated by BSU,
Hawaii, and Fresno State or Play behind a large, solid O line, have decent
recievers, and as painful as this is to admit has won two conference
championships, is listed as a possible BCS buster, and oh ya has a tradition at
my position. Leave the kid and his family alone let him play in Provo and go on
with his life. All is fair in love and war. GO Utes!!!!
Stealing? I live in cedar city ut and have ties to both schools up north. Should
an athlete be scrutinized about leaving a scholarship from suckie suu on the
table to play at BYU because of loyalty reasons. I think not.If anybody
remembers the Burgess kid who verbaly commited to BYU for basketball, and then
signed with Duke and everyone was up in arms. He didnt do well at Duke, and
ended up with the utes, but it was a good move. He had a chance to play for a
great team with great recognition. No blame. My point is that we cant
blame any of these kids for choosing what they feal is in their best interest.
It's only football. Hate each others schools all you want, but not the kids.
This is why high school sports are so political. To many people up on their high
Riley didn't do anything wrong. The BYU coaches didn't do anything wrong. And
yet, something still *feels* wrong. I still think a rule needs to be changed
with the NCAA in regards to which school you're committed to if you leave after
enrolling. When a kid goes on a mission it's fine if they stop their
eligibility clock from running, but the kid should stay committed to the school
he attended under scholarship. If he leaves that school he should lose one year
eligibility just as if he transfered without going on a mission.
I would have left too. The opportunities at USU are just too sparse. Having gone
to USU and roomed with football players I understand that the coaching and
athletic staff are inadequate and don't have necessary support from USU
administration. This isn't to say that I am an expert of any kind, but I would
have chosen a more professional and developed program like BYU myself.
Athletically, he probably made a good choice in switching as much as I wanted
him to stay. But I cant blame him for bettering himself. BYU is clearly the
better program in football and any kid that is used to winning wants to keep
winning.I do agree with the poster from 7:27 A.M. that something smells a
little foul. What? I dont know. But then again it is not basketball and I am not
too worried. He wasnt going to win 8 games by himself. Once basketball
comes around we have a little more room to talk since we are the premier team in
the state over the last 10 years. Go Stu, Go Aggies!!!
I have a idea... The MWC should Add Boise State and Fresno and Nevada and the
rest of the want a bee Wac offs should go play I-AA with the Big Sky. Lets get
real... Utah state football is a past, history, sad to be gone. But they might
as well go play in the place they can be competitive. They will
never ever recover from the Sun Belt Big West mess and the WAC left them out
till the end when it was already all but dead. If you take out Hawaii all you
have left is the old big west anyway and higher end Big sky teams anyway.Weber State should Cancel Football . Its program is a joke. Utah state should cancel football. Both are a joke and will never be good
anyway. Utah state needs to get a good coach and give him some time.
Every time they get someone they can him after 3-4 years and they make him play
Nebraska, and all the great teams. Try a Rainbow Warrior Schedule. You might go
3-7..I really would like to see both USU and WSU do better, but its
looks very grim...
"BYU didn't just take the Aggies' quarterback of the future, it took their
spirit." - Please, nobody cares about this. He didn't help us will all that
many games when he was hear, we aren't going to lose many because he is gone
(although lets face it, we are going to lose just about all of them). This
article is a sad example of someone trying to write about something he really
knows nothing about.
Riley Nelson is an idiot plain and simple. Lets go to a school where he will
probably only start his senior year since Hall is only a Junior and he
redshirted his freshmen year. Had he stayed at Utah State he would have started
all four years. He just traded in a starting job for a benchwarming position. I
guess he was dropped on his head as a kid or something.
we watched byu DOMINATE!?!? ucla? , a lineman was lucky enough to get his
fingers in the way of a very low kick and you call that dominating? as far as
i'm concerned BYU steals ideas and calls it inspiration, the kid made a good
choice, but he's going to deal with a very inexpierence offensive coordinator,
who decides to run the ball on the 5 yard line with less then a minute, then to
take a knee, so let's see how far he goes with that...
Tyler...wow you really need to get with the program. Weber State actually has a
PRETTY GOOD program. They are getting better and are expected to have a shot at
the Big Sky Championship this year. Maybe you should do your research before you
Weberguy,I have season tickets to Weber Suck State... Might win the
title in 20 years is a better word. Even if they get close.. Which they wont.
Montana, Montana State and Eastern are always better and always will be. And did
we crack 10,000 at a game last year.. Heck no. So I do know what I
am talking about. Weber State should have canned football and keep Ron A in
basketball and never hired that corn hole on the mtn.Tyler
Wow, this is like Ben Olsen just reversed, hopefully Nelson's career doesn't end
up like his...
Has everyone who's so rashly stated that the BYU creamery is better, ever had
Aggie Ice Cream?!?!
The cougs are ridiculas. The fans think they are soooo good and claim to be a
national power house but the cougs don't even register on the national scale!
And the quaterback program everyone talks about is not the same one that was
around when the good qbs were playing for byu (young Mcmahon etc.) Who was
there last QB to do well in the NFL....zoobies best is John Beck. he is nothing
compared to Alex Smith. Zewbie fans can continue to dream that they are
something, but alas they are nothing!
Riley Jensen can't throw the ball more than 20 yards down field anyway. If you
don't believe me get a tape of his game at Lousiana Tech. He is pathetic I don't
see it as a loss at all. He will never see action as a QB at BYU anyway. The Ags
need a coach that will bring back the forward pass. Not 20 passes a game 15 if
which are 3 yard dinks and dunks. Good riddance. Get a new coach and then just
go grab some JC QB's with big arms and start throwing the ball again.
The BYU offence changed for Mr. Doman. The BYU offense changed for Steve Young.
Bronco is notso set with the offense that he would not changeit a
bit for a very talented QB who can run. Putting in 10 more QB running plays per
game wouldbe 10 times what BYU has now. The key to this conversation is
how talent is coming to BYU. My is it not cool to watch "A 3rd tier talent
team(USC Band Wagon Post)" like BYU finish ranked 15th and 14th (11-2 11-2)
over the past two seasons. Maybe they'll move even higher in the national
rankings now that more and more talent comes to Provo. Remember too the kid was
a Parade All American. Conclusion: The Kid has massive talent! BYU has not lost
a MWC football game since the 2005 season! That's quite the run in any
conference anywhere.GO SOLID COUGS! Keep it Rolling Bronco! WOW!
