If we can get consistent performance from our guards, we can win every game left on the schedule and get into the tournament. If the recent trend of guard play continues, ESPN is correct.

This is not a surprise. BYU's seed had been dropping despite winning. So why wouldn't they now be out of the projections after losing to LMU on their home court?

Have to at least split with St. Mary's and Gonzaga. Then do some damage in the conference tournament. Even then they may not get in.

Thats not fair! They've earned it with the TV contract and national following.

Once again, now is basketball, strength of schedule is becoming a factor for Provo. CBS Sportsline has BYU's strength of schedule at 90. (Utah's surprisingly is in the Top 50 for strength of schedule just thought I would throw that in, for fun.) But typically a weak schedule is a good indicator why the WCC is only going to get two bids.

  • BlueCoug Orem, UT
    Jan. 23, 2012 5:32 p.m.

Not surprising, after dropping that ugly game against LMU.

On the upside, BYU has a great opportunity in the next two weeks to prove that they deserve to be in the NCAA tournament.

Wins over Va Tech on the road, and Saint Mary's and Gonzaga at home, will have BYU right back in the mix. Lose any of those games, and the Cougars will probably have to win the WCC tournament to punch their NCAA ticket.

Big deal. It isn't like this is the BcS where politics and fat guys in blazers decide who is in. Win and you are in.

BYU has 4-6 quality games coming up, depending on seeding in the tournament. Win them all, and they could be a four or five seed in the tournament.

Of course BYU is projected to end up on the outside - they're the third-best team in a one-bid conference. They'll have to win the conference tourney to get in. In fact, I'm not sure why BYU even plays a regular season.

How in the world can utah have a tougher SOS when the pac-1x is awful this year. the utes sos will continue to drop as they play in conference and BYUs will rise again as they face SMC (ranked) once and Gonzaga twice. It will all work back out- it's just that BYU has finished the series with some of the nobodies in conference and hasn't played the big boys yet.

Just see what happens to your sos when you play usc your one time this year. (plummet)

Gotta laugh at the hyperbole being spewed by the over-the-hill crowd.

Utah is the 11th or 12th best team in a one-bid conference, but the not-so-brave-one and others of her ilk obsess over BYU possibly being a bubble team. Bottom-dweller hysteria at its finest.

  • Samwise Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 23, 2012 6:59 p.m.

    Just a few thoughts:

    1. If BYU goes as an at large team, it will be a 12 or 13 seed at the worst. Usually at large teams are "ranked" far better than 64th or so in the nation.

    2. BYU hardly has to win the WCC to go to the NCAA tournament. The WCC could easily be a 3 bid conference this year and will be 2 a two bid conference at the least. The PAC 12 on the other hand will be struggling to get a 2nd team in.

    3. This is a big time rebuilding year for the Cougars. They lost possibly their best player ever and one of the best defensive players ever. And they are still in contention to make it to the NCAA Tournament. They are very young. They will be very good in the next few seasons after this one.

    4. How are the Utes doing this year?

  • Bottom Line Draper, UT

Brave sir robin, thats alot to be said for a person who if they support SDSU has a lot to owe BYU for getting the MWC any credit at all. Seem to remember BYU and Utah for that matter building the MWC and the WAC for all those years, a few good seasons for sdsu doe not make them a major factor into building any conference. So enjoy the fruits of BYU and Utah down in san diego.

  • COUGARNATE Lyman, WY
    Jan. 23, 2012 7:28 p.m.

If BYU wins the next three games, they will be projected back in. @brave sir robin. One bid league. The WCC has had at least two teams in the NCAA quite a few times in the last few years. The WCC will get two the Pac 12 will be the league with one bid. Co-Leader Oregon was man handled by the same BYU team that you ute trolls are bad mouthing. If BYU can win the next three games, they will be a very strong candidate for the tourney, whether you like it or not.

So . . . how is this news?

Anyone with a basketball IQ knew this BEFORE the LMU game. BYU had to win ALL of its league games, except the on-the-road Gonzaga game to earn a place in the tournament.

C'mon guys! Tell us something we don't know. Heck, I even had to post about Jakob Hartsock last week.

News has to be "new." That's why you get paid the big bucks.

  • MN Ute SALT LAKE CITY, UT
    Jan. 23, 2012 10:19 p.m.

@ everyone hating on the utes,

you guys are trashing us for the fact that we obviously wont get into the tourney. Why? We all know that, not one of the ute fans have said otherwise.
As to the question of what we're playing for, we're playing for the practice and the chance to rebuild, same as you guys.

And just for the record, we're surpassing most BYU fan expectations:
Won't win 5 games: did that
Won't win a game without Jiggy: did that
Won't win a single conference game: won two
Gonna be at the bottom of the Pac: not quite, though admittedly not by much.

I honestly wish BYU the best of luck and hope they get the chance to represent Utah well in the tourney, but I don't think it's going to happen. All I ask is to for once, think about the bigger picture. Both Utes and Y fans, enjoy the rivalry and hate each other WHEN YOU"RE PLAYING, but support a Utah team regardless when you're facing other opponents. That way, the Utah team's become better, along with the rivalry games.

This is not surprising news based on our current record. We lost to USU and LMU, games we should have won and we haven't beaten anyone of note.

To get back in the discussion we would need to win a couple of games we are not suppose to win. If we win two of the following, we'll be back in the discussion - Va Tech (away), St Marys (home), Zags (away).

The Cougs are also capable of winning the WCC tourney if the guards can heat up again. What's happened to the days of Carlino, Zylstra and Winder lighting it up for 20? A healthy Stephen Rogers also increases our chances of getting the crown in the WCC tourney.

BYU will always be a bubble team from here on out. They have good young players coming not great ones. Some years they will get in others they won't.

College basketball in the state of Utah has already seen it's glory years and might not have them again. Only Weber has a chance of going to the NCAA tournament and I think they probably lose in their tournament like last year. Utah will have two NIT teams for the year is all.

Its an interesting unspoken commentary on how irrelevant the pac 12 has become in the minds of the national sports media. byu has no wins of note yet they have a 20 pt win over oregon who is the Pac12 co-leader.

I'm guessing that in their minds they have demoted the pac 12 to somewhere between the WAC and the big sky conference.

  • giantfan Farmington, UT
    Jan. 24, 2012 9:22 a.m.

I find it interesting that so many people pretend to know anything about college basketball where they obviously don't. BYU is not independent in basketball (Honor Code) and the WCC will not be a one-bid league (Sir Robin) and will more than likely have just as many, if not more, teams in the NCAA tourney than the Pac-12. Now that is saying something! Besides the fact that the Pac-12 has three more teams than the WCC, they also have some serious basketball powerhouses that should be going to the tourney every year! But go ahead and continue your rhetoric about the WCC being a one-bid league or that BYU plays a soft schedule. It's just plain comedy to the rest of us that know a thing or two about college basketball!

  • UU32 Bountiful, UT
    Jan. 24, 2012 9:22 a.m.

BYU still has a good shot at the NCAA tournament. The game tomorrow night at Va. Tech is huge. A loss there and it is an uphill climb. With the extra teams that get to play in the "first round" now, it really helps BYU's chances of getting in. Then again, two of those are put on a Sunday play track, so BYU's chances are less to get one of those games than others. The Cougs defintely can't stumble against anyone other than St. Mary's or Gonzaga. Even at that I think they need to go 2-1 against them in order to lock in a bid - or maybe 3-1 or 3-2 with one in the WCC tournament.

  • Nikon Guy Henderson, NV
    Jan. 24, 2012 10:32 a.m.

That's what BYU gets for throwing the rest of their sports in a mid-major conference. SOS really does matter this year. Clearly the best league in the west isn't the PAC-12 or WCC. It's the MWC, as indicated by RPI conference ranking on realtimerpi.com. Even ESPN currently has the MWC ranked 5th ahead of the ACC, PAC-12, and WCC, which is ranked 11th. The polls have no PAC-12 teams ranked. The WCC has only one team ranked in the lower half of the polls, while MWC has two teams ranked in the top 15. This year the the MWC owns the PAC-12. Head to head the MWC is 11-3 versus the PAC-12. I don't know what the stat is on MWC versus WCC but more than likely the MWC has an edge.

Does one really expect the bid commitee to hand the WCC 3 bids (two at large bids and one automatic) when the conference isn't even ranked in the top 10? If anything the PAC-12 will get at least two teams in and maybe a third based on reputation alone.

  • Joe Schmoe Orem, UT
    Jan. 24, 2012 10:50 a.m.

The MWC will be back to one bid next year since BYU left and soon SDSU will be gone.

UNLV can continue to have a home game for every tournament game, make it to the tourney, and maybe win a game or two. Actually with Dave Rice you can probably do better than that.

    You can thank BYU later.

  • The Deuce Livermore, CA
    Jan. 24, 2012 10:51 a.m.

BYU has a possible shot at the tourney but the odds are long at best. The WCC will at most have 2 picks for the NCAA Tournament. You need to finish in the top 2 positions. It is possible if BYU wins over St Mary's and Gonzaga. Any losses and they are looking at the NIT. One commentator said it correctly that the best basketball years are behind the schools in Utah. It will take a few years to bring this back. And yes, football going independent threw alot of the programs under the bus having to scramble to join other conferences.

  • Nikon Guy Henderson, NV
    Jan. 24, 2012 11:28 a.m.

    @ Joe Schmoe

Even with SDSU gone after 2012-13 the mega CUSA/MWC mess (I hate it too) should be a multi-bid conference. Lunardi had 4 teams from CUSA, 3 from MWC and one from the WAC which is Nevada (which will be part of MWC next year). If the CUSA/MWC existed this year one would be looking at potentially 7-8 bids.

Now looking ahead...the MEGA mess CUSA/MWC should be a strong basketball league but not football. The "mess" would have S. Miss, Memphis, UAB, UTEP, UNLV, New Mexico, and Nevada. USU also could potentially leave the WAC for CUSA/MWC. CUSA/MWC would be looking at potentially 4 bids each year. A very good year one could see as much as 7 bids.

As far as Rice, I expect him to be at UNLV for a while and maybe even be a lifer since he is UNLV alumni and was a part of the 1990 championship team. Yes, BYU we thank you for grooming our future coach but don't expect him to go back to BYU when Rose leaves for a bigger gig.

The WCC has three teams in the top 30. St. Mary's is currently 20th, Gonzaga 27th in the AP, both about the same on Sagarin. Beat them in the remaining 4-5 games against them (3 regular season, 1 or 2 in the tournament) and win @ Virginia Tech and BYU would have 5-6 quality wins, they'd move up to the top 20 or so teams.

The good news is BYU controls their own destiny. Whether they do so is what sports is all about.

BYU has no one to blame but themselves, but there's still a lot of basketball to still be played, so let's get more consistent team play. Their home loss to Loyola Maramount was a HUGE loss. I've always thought that with many mid-majors (WCC and MWC included), they usually have 2 slots for the tourney-- League Champ and Conf. Tournament Champ w/ it's automatic bid. You're stretching to get a 3rd and alomost impossible to send a 4th. So, if a conf. championship doesn't pan out, they MUST win the Conference Tournament. Those are the only two guarantees to get to the Bid Dance.

The Pac may be awful but the average Pac12 RPI is 101 compared to 164 for WCC. Winning percentage for teams Utah has played 60%, BYU 53%.

BYU will benefit by playing St. Mary's again and Gonzaga, both with good RPIs.

However, if the U is going to plummet by playing USC with a RPI of 190 (the lowest RPI the U has left to play), then the Y will also be hurt by having to play Portland twice with an RPI of 227, Pepperdine, 224, San Fran, 159, and Santa Clara, 242.

If BYU beats VaTech on the road and St. Mary's at home, all of a sudden Joe Lunardi will switch it to "last four in".

If BYU loses three more games this season, it is likely they will have to win the WCC conference tourney to make it in, just like 90% of the teams out there, including my beloved Utes.

This is hilarious, I can't believe any ute fans are really trying yo smack talk the cougars basketball team. The real fact is that since BYU joined the WCC they became a for sure 2 bid conference and most likely 3 bid year in year out. BYU adds the for sure second, the other bid has always been a potential, BYU simply adds a near for sure bid to the conference, much the same reason why the MWC has respect, both BYU and UofU have had some good teams in the past to bring respect to the MWC.

At this point, St. Mary's will likely be the only one getting in, if they win the WCC tournament. If Gonazag or BYU win out the regular season and win the WCC tournament, there's a slight chance two WCC teams will get in.

Hey BYU fans. Does it really matter how many teams the Pac-12 or any other conference gets in the big dance?
Why are some of y'all so obsessed about that anyway. The only thing that matters is how your team does and what its doing to be post season eligible. And the way things are going a number of unexpected teams could end up playing in March. Most conferences are down right now, even my ACC. We could see a number of mid-major type teams that people do not expect playing in the NCAA tournament in March.

  • VAggie Bristow, United States

The WCC is a 2 bid league at least, SMC and the Zags. BYU is only in if the win the Tourney. The only way ANY instate team makes the NCAA tourney is if they win their conference tourney, and I predict Weber State to be the only Utah representation this March.(Maybe if BYU wins out, and loses in the conf. finals to Saint Marys.)
