What happened to Oregon and Stanford?

No wonder the utes left the MWC. Northern Colorado and Colorado? Washington State and Oregon State?

More money and weaker teams? I can see it, good move.

Two year cycle home and home series - teams that went to Oregon or Stanford this year get them at home next. Oregon and Stanford most likely after this year.

How in the world does Utah luk out 2 years in a row not plaing the best teams in the conference. They would not have benn bowl eligible this year and next year if they would have to play those 2 teams.

Northern Colorado? Booooo! At least give us Colorado State. They're a good tune up game, and we have a little history with them. Montana St. didn't exactly tune us up for USC. This game stinks.

worf, you've forgotten how a conference works. They set the schedule.

    Some teams are independent.
Independent teams can schedule anybody they want.
    Dare they schedule LSU?
    Dare they schedule Wisconsin?
    Dare they schedule Oklahoma State?

    No.
They choose instead to schedule Weber State.

It has nothing to do with luck that Utah misses both Oregon and Stanford again. There is a six year rotational cycle. Utah will play the same teams from the north as they did last year but the location of the games will switch. Then, the two years after Utah will miss two other teams from the north besides Oregon and Stanford. The final two years of the six year rotation will see utah missing the last two teams from the north that they haven't. Stop bad mouthing the schedule byu homers...it is better than what you will put together.

More important than the unveiling of the 2012 schedule is the phrase "EVERY Pac-12 football game will be available on national television." As per usual, though, the DNews missed the most important point of the PAC-12 press release. I guess this officially ends the TV smack talk era, which was never that formidable to begin with.

    @ worf & Sounds right..

Apparently both of you don't understand how 12 team conference schedules work. Let me enlighten you so I don't have to hear anymore Y'ning.

The Pac-12 plays a 9 conference game schedule. Each team will play every team in their respected division and play 4 of the 6 teams from the opposite division.

The conference games will stay the same for two years so every conference game is a home and home. Utah will have the exact same conference schedule this year as last year except playing at the opposite stadium. In 2013 Utah will play both Stanford and Oregon and miss Washington State and California. That schedule will remain the same for 2013-2014 (home and home) Then the schedule rotates again and Utah will miss two more teams from the north division in 2015-2016 (home and home) ect.

No more Y'ning from you Y fans. Utah was dealt not play Stanford and Oregon their first two years. But, we will play them next year.

    Hey DesNews:

Make sure Vai S. gets this schedule in his inbox. He's pretty well obligated to write another "View" this October, about how the Pac-12 accommodated local sensibilities and the General Conference Priesthood Session. USC visits Utah on Thursday, October 4, after a bye week for both schools.

"I will be in SLC to see 2 of your L's: BYU & USC.."

You sure will be disappointed this year as far as BYU is concerned. BYU sure hasn't fared very well against the Utes in recent years. Utah will extend it's dominance over BYU this year to 3 in a row, 8 of the last 11 games, and most importantly 56-34-4.

The only team that is likely to beat us at home this year is USC. USC-Utah will be a good game, win or lose.

Eh, nevermind, I missed the comment that noted it.

As for BYUs schedule, they are fairly limited since conference games take up most of the latter 8-9 weeks so it's hard for them to find good opponents for later in the season. Personally I would love for BYU-Utah to be every thursday of conference week (the PAC-12 does have some schedule exemptions like those Notre Dame games when it comes to second half of the season non-conference games). Actually, on second thought... maybe it's not in the best interest to have BYU-Utah right before conference... might leave a large chunk of the LDS population (regardless of which team wins) with lingering resentment during the weekend.

  • PAC 12 loves U Sandy, Utah

    atl134

On top of what you said: This schedule shows that the Pac-12 is willing to work with Utah by giving them a bye week for General Conference weekend. I'm sure the University of Utah has addressed this concern to the Pac-12 that a large number of their fan base is LDS and General Conference is important to those fans. I'm happy to see this issue is resolved.

  • BYU Joe MISSION VIEJO, CA
    Jan. 4, 2012 5:01 p.m.

The confession of my soul remains that I am jealous of your Pac 12 inclusion. Win or Lose - honesty demands that I admit that I would gladly change places with Utah and have this be our set schedule - I hate to admit it, but I must.

We Cougars can try all we want to justify it but the truth is we would change places in a minute if we could be in the PAC-12.

Now having said that - I still maintain that Utah will remain a mid level team finding their way to a steady diet of Sun Bowls and 7-5 seasons followed by 8-25 Basketball seasons.

And if the roles were reversed they would die as an Independent where as BYU remains one of only maybe five schools in the country that can pull this off.

And if we are all honest about this situation there are two solid truths:

    1. Life is way less fun without our ongoing rivalry and a game in late November.
    2. Only time will tell if BYU is right - and if they are right it will be great. But that will take about 5 years to really know.

  • DevilishUte Tempe, AZ

And it also means the PAC-12 is not the religiously bigoted group that Y fans want you to think it is because they didn't get an invitation to the party.

  • UtahUte16 Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 4, 2012 5:05 p.m.

It was in the best interest of the Pac-12 conference for their newcomers to be as successful as possible. Everyone knew at pre-season that Colorado would likely struggle; but Utah had potential to be successful. Do I think it's a coincidence that Utah missed Oregon and Stanford their first two years? I don't really know, but it's a strong possibility that Utah was given some 'welcoming' gifts. USC vs Utah Pac-12 opener? The more success Utah sees, the more the conference will see. My impression is that Utah is building a great foundation to be very successful in the near future.

Not playing Oregon and Stanford doesn't discredit what the Utes have done. Utah would likely have the same record if they had switched Oregon/Stanford for Cal/Washington. They played what was given them, and they did so exceeding many expectations. Given the quarterback situation, we can consider this season a huge success. It could have been so much worse. But Kyle Whittingham and co know how to run a football program. As long as the collective attitude shown by Utah players remains, I believe the Utes will be a very successful football team.

I have to say that the Northern Co game is less than desirable.

The USC game at home will be sick though! USC has to get through the Utes.. at RES. Let that sink in for a while. The Utes had them on the ropes in the Coleseum. I think we can steal that game at RES.

The byU game will be epic as well but only because it will be 3 straight W's:)

Solid schedule for the most part. I only wish we could make a few changes...

    1. Replace Northern Colorado with a MWC team.
    2. Replace one of the two WAC teams (USU, BYU) with an ACC, Big 12 team.

One WAC team is okay to warm up with, but there is no need to have 2... Oh well, with the PAC 12/Big 10 partnership, this will probably never happen again!

Thanks to the guys who understand how the rotating schedule works and for enlightening the rest of us. I was confused about the omission of Oregon and Stanford. It makes much more sense now. In any case, I will be renewing my season tickets with much anticipation for what I expect to be another great year for the Utes. Northern Colorado seems to be the weakest link but many teams in major conferences schedule cupcakes early, especially for the first game. Glad to see the up and coming Aggies back on the schedule, but hope they are not their every year. And, of course, am looking forward to the certain-to-be beatdown of that team from down south.....

At least this time we won't have to worry about Norm Chow's health if Wynn takes a hit. Everybody was pretty worried this past year early in the season. I'm sure Norm has grown some finger nails by now.

By scheduling Northern Colorado, Utah hopes to beat at least one Colorado team next year. 1-3 heading into their night game with USC will have the jumping black beans in a frenzy.

Snack PAC - that is a lot of smack talk from a team that is 1-3 vs. in state schools the last 2 years compared to Utah being 2-0.

K, well, I'm a Ute fan, and I have to admit, our choices for OOC opponents are pretty weak. I mean, BYU and NCU? USU deserves props, but without Turbin, there's no reason we shouldn't beat them.
But, all you cougars, that's the point of OOC teams, to warm up and fill the win column, the only Pac12 teams that are taking risks are Arizona (playing Oklahoma State), Cal (@ Ohio State), Oregon State (Wisconsin), UCLA (Nebraska), and Washington (@ LSU). And those are pretty much five assured losses for them.

Plus, if you're gonna start mocking the U for their schedule, look at the two Pac12 teams besides Utah you chose to face. Stanford? no! Oregon? haha, please! No, you're facing Oregon State and Washington State.

Oh, but be sure to give my best to ND, BSU, and GT when they walk all over you. We'll be seeing you before then, so I'll ask the same then.

    FYI

Actually, it was a tough choice for Utah.

Play Northern Colorado, and have a chance to go 1-1 against Colorado teams.

    or

Play Weber State, and have a change to go 1-2 against Utah teams.
    ==========

So snackpac thinks Utah will lose to both BYU and Utah State in the same season next year. Just out of curiosity I wanted to find out what BYU fans base their predictions off of...

Utah has only lost to USU and BYU in the same season once in the last 25 years...while BYU nearly lost to Utah and USU in the same season the last 2 seasons in a row (if not for one complete fluke of a play)

Just a fun stat to keep you Y fans grounded, lets see the in-state records the last 10 seasons for both Utah and BYU.

Utah 15-3 vs in state rivals since 2002
BYU 8-8 vs in state rivals since 2002

If these are the types of things BYU fans base their predictions on, no wonder they are always wrong.

Really disappointed in the Northern Colorado matchup. I get the whole "tune up" game, but C'mon. Can't we play a former MWC team or WAC? I wonder if it's a challenge for Utah to get this first game at home. I would really like to hear the reason why.

USU will be a fun game up in Logan.

Can't wait until next year to have Stanford and Oregon on the schedule.

    GO UTES!

Sorry everybody for my post @ 1:32 a.m. My facts were off...

Utah is 16-3 vs in state rivals the last 10 years, not 15-3.

sorry BYU, I was not wrong on your record, you actually are 8-8 vs in state rivals the last 10 years. But maybe the Weber State game will give you a little boost next year??

    Marine Corps Vet:

"Should think any respectable Ute fan should recognize it's time to stop blowing smack regarding BYU's strength of schedule."

As a "respectable Ute fan", I bet to differ.

For starters, it doesn't appear - by the comments from Ute fans on this thread - that Ute fans are exited this admittedly poor matchup. But apart from No. Colorado, the Utes will STILL have no less than 9 BCS schools on our schedule. The cougars will only have 4, plus Notre Dame. If we were to break down our schedules, we would both be playing Utah St, Washington St, Oregon St, and an FCS team. So that's a push. But here's where separation occurs:

    1. The U plays USC. The Y gets BSU. The edge goes to USC in both competitiveness and national appeal, and ESPECIALLY sans Kellen Moore.

    2. The U plays Ariz. The Y gets NMSU. Rich Rod's Wildcats get the edge over NMSU in both competitiveness and national appeal. This one isn't even close.

    3. The U plays Colo. The Y gets Idaho. Once again, Colo. gets the edge over Idaho. The Vandals cannot stack up to the Buffaloes. Now I'm not suggesting that Colo. will be a major player next season just because they're a BCS team, so all your "strawmen" cougars out there can take this for what it's worth. Colorado > Idaho.

    4. The U plays ASU and UCLA. The Y gets Hawai'i and SJSU. Once again, the edges go to ASU and UCLA.

As for the remaining 2 opponents [Utes: Cal/Wash; cougs: Ga.Tech/Notre Dame], each fanbase can make an argument as to who gets the edge, but in reality, it's too soon to call it.

Therefore, with all the edges in our 2012 regular season, Ute fans CAN call out cougar fans for weak SOS. Especially since 9 of our scheduled games are mandatory. So we can't help who we play there. Y fans have been trumpeting their scheduling flexibility as though they have a choice who they play. So with those choices...you STILL chose 4 WAC teams and an FCS school. Weak SOS. Own it.

With every game on national TV, can we finally get the trolls from down south to shut up? Utah joined in the middle of a contract period and had to scrounge for what they could get on TV. New year, new contract, new rules, new exposure.

"The combined record of opponents that Utah will play next year was 66-79 this last year. Now do the math for BYU's opponents, 70-75...look at who you are playing! Utah has the new CUPCAKE schedule of the year."

First of all, congratulations for actually doing a little research before you post. That said, your point is moot. You guys boasted of the strength of your 2011 schedule LAST year just after the final bowl games of 2010 had been played. Cougar fans pointed out that the aggregrate record of their 2011 opponents had a 2010 record of 72-79. However, the ACTUAL 2011 record was 62-86. In other words, WORSE.

So, as you can see, the prior years' records are irrelevant to opponents future records.

You guys just need to finally accept that Bronco/Holmoe prefer weak SOS, and stop embarrassing yourselves by trying to compare yourselves, your mid-majorey team, your mid-majorey schedules, and your mid-majorey bowl games with Pac-12 teams, schedules, and postseason tie-ins.

At least you all still have your nanny code.

As an out-of-state Ute fan, I'm excited about the 2012 schedule.

Comparing BYU and Utah's schedules is a silly debate. Nobody on a national scale takes that debate seriously, other than delusional BYU fans. The U once had the kind of schedule BYU has, and it was terrible. I appreciate reasonable BYU fans that recognize what Utah has accomplished getting in to the PAC 12 - life is GREAT here an interesting game each week. I really enjoyed the 2011 season, ending with a good (not great) bowl game.

I'd come on to argue about Utah's schedule versus BYU's, but seeing as ESPN has yet to tell BYU which WAC teams they'll be playing on Saturday nights at 8:15PM the last 5 weeks of the season, really can't do it.

What you grab'n at dude. You will never understand the difference. Love your team, love your schedule, love your home games. There is nothing to compare PAC-12 schedule vs Indy schedule, you guys choose it, so live with it.

Those first 8 weeks look pretty good for you guys, but then come week 9 the U plays Cal, WU, AU, CU that's when you guys start defending your Idaho State Championship. After I look at that schedule oif yours you should still have chance after starting 3-5 to get another bid to the copter bowl. --------------

Actually, I wasn't talking smack. I leave that to juveniles. As my 5:45 post reminds you, I complimented Larry Scott, how the PAC brought the Utes on board, and the fact that all the Utes' games are on TV. Sweet deal by a brilliant commissioner.

I posted the rankings of the Utes' opponents not as "smack," but as data. The Utes are quality team in a quality conference. That doesn't mean all their opponents are "top flight." The schedule as a whole may be better than average, tough, whatever, but all opponents aren't, and being in a "tough" conference doesn't make all the teams in it tough. That is the fallacy of division -- assuming all the parts of something contain the same characteristics as the whole.

    continued...

  • Rational Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 5, 2012 5:51 p.m.

True sports allows individuals, teams and coaches to progress over the course of a season, and be tested on that progress through an end-of-season measuring process. The BcS does not allow that. Instead it puts on a months long sham and foists upon us a bogus "champion" chosen not through contest, but through debate and "votes."

What astonishes me to no end is that people buy into that sham, and what astonishes me even more is that Ute fans buy that. The 2008 Utes on any given day may have beaten ANY team. Alabama probably would've beaten them 8 of 10, but the Utes dominated the Sugar Bowl, especially in the first half, as thoroughly as any I've seen. The 2004 Utes probably could've beaten EVERY team in the county more than 50% of the time. Both were denied that opportunity, and yet as insiders, some immature Utes now swallow the BcS lies hook, line and sinker.

Last years Packers were 9-6 regular season then won the Super Bowl. The 2011 UConn Huskies were 21-9, then reeled off 10 straight to win March Madness. THAT is how all sports should be.

  • Rational Salt Lake City, UT
    Jan. 5, 2012 5:51 p.m.

The thing is, the power conferences would still win most of the championships, if there were playoffs, and tough schedules would actually matter as preparation for the playoffs. Yet, the BcS rolls on, and some people still get behind it. A sad indictment of a lack of fairness, poor sportsmanship, and greed.
