It seems to me that South Sevier should be ranked higher as they beat Fremont who beat Sky View. Odds are they could take most schools in the state with their three headed monster of Parsons, King & Clark.

Fremont is below mediocre this year, and not representative of top 4 or 5a basketball.

Funny to see how Bingham is when they have just better than average talent. In past years they have had by far the most talent and depth and wasted it with bad coaching. They really need a change in that program.

Years and Years of under achieving is enough.

so west jordan is in first? Even though they lost to riverton. when lp's only loss was #3 orem?

If South Sevier keeps winning they will move up. Losing to another 2A school to start the season doesn't help their ranking. If they run the table they will be deserving of a top 10 spot for sure. Right now #18 is fair. Go Rams

LP will take state in the end, let's quit fooling ourselves they are really the best team in state.

It is too bad that the UHSAA would not sanction a two day tournament on the first weekend in March that featured the best 2A-5A teams in the state to settle this discussion.

@HS Sport Dude - I don't think Bingham has bad coaching. They are there late in the tournament every year it seems like. I think he gets a lot out of his boys.

@aficionado - I agree, that is a little messed up. I really wish LP would have beat orem so we could have seen WJ and LP.

@eagle - I wouldn't be so sure LP is the best team in the state. They haven't really looked good in the last 3 games with the execption of skyline. I think WJ would beat them, and i think AF would even give them a really good game.

All the little town people dreaming of there team getting a chance at the big boys..............

What a waste of time! Why would you want to have the champs all play each other??? Do you actually think SS would hang with LP, WJ, Orem,?? and

It would only be good for small town teams, because guess what, if a school like Alta were to beat SS, oh you little town people instantly say....
You should beat us you have 2400 students to our 200,

Big schools if they win all you small town people would say then is, YOU were predicted to win so who cares...

Then you have if South Sevier win, or anyone else small, its the biggest upset ever,

so its a lose lose for the big schools to play small schools, even if there is a team that comes along and wins 26 games in a year, you play 2A all year, if you play up even one more division its maybe 18 wins, 4A all year 13 wins, 5A all year long 10 wins!

Stop trying to compare this! Be good with a 2A state title. is that not good enough?

    @binghamalum
Based on your argument, weber st, butler, and all small schools shouldn't be invited to March Madness, because it would be a lose/lose situation for the Dukes, the Mich Sts and the Standfords. The only thing that should determine their participation is the number of students attending the school??? I would like to see a state-wise playoff. 16 schools going at it with all they got for a week. What are you afraid of????????

I think they should have the top 4-8 teams from each class go to a big tournament and see how that ends up.

If I remember right, back in 1976 the UHSAA or someone put together a four classifications state champions tournament. I know for sure that Milford was in it as the 1A champion. It finished 4A 3A 2A 1A after four games. Can anyone fill us in on all the details?

doesn't wrestling have a tournament of champions at the end of the year all class champs invited? Sure its one on one but couldnt you argue that a 5A has so many more 145 pound kids to choose from. does that make it a lose lose situation for the 5A kid. Nobody says at the end of the year that "sure he took state but he lost in that tournament for fun against the other bests in the state" no. any state champion would welcome the chance to prove they are the VERY best. thats why they are champs in the first place.

HS Sports Dude: Pretty hard on the Bingham coaches, time for a change, years of under achieving. Really! In 2009 with Ben Clifford they were suppose to win the whole thing and didn't but other than that they have been very competitive every year, won it in 2006. This year's team is missing their best player who is out until January. Take the best player off any team the first 10 games and they would struggle.

The problem with Bingham Basketball is they don't produce D-1 players or potiental D-1 players don't go to Bingham(Which isn't the case in football). Other schools every few years have a D-1 player come through their program. Clifford and Roberts since 1989 are the only players I can think of. This is not Hossier, you will not win State anymore without D-1 level basketball players.

West Jordan-(3) D-1 players, Lone Peak-(2) D-1 players, AF-(2) D-1 players, your state Champion is one of these teams. If South Sevier really has (3) D-1 players they would be up there with these teams also.

    woodness,
Wrestling is in no way Comparision to Basketball buddy.
Because all it is One on One, any kid who just works his butt off and is fit and ripped and knows how to wrestle well can win state. Look at all the wasatch kids, its must easier to be good in individual sports like that becasue you know who the BEST is by just watching him, such as in Golf,
the best golfer in state could be playing for 1A waterford because tahts where he goes to school.

    WAdad,
We are talking about High school sports, Not D1 college teams. where talent level is far from 2A schools in Utah. thats why numbers mean so much,
You know if SS would of lost to Fremont, no one would of cared, but SS wins on Fremonts first game and everyone says little guy upsets big guy,
When there is no good coming from this. Why do you think Bingham doesnt go play anyone under 4A? people would kill to play Bingham, and if you lose, oh well they should of won, if you win, BIG UPSET! ha no possible good out come for bigger schools.

  • binghamalum South Jordan, UT
    Dec. 29, 2011 9:41 a.m.

why would the top 4-8 teams in each class be in a big tourney???
That would be a non fun matchup like I compared to little schools wantin shots at Big schools.

Its funny you schools only bring up competition in basketball, SS where are you in Football??? or baseball???/ can you hang with all the big boys in them sports??? NO

Just becasue you go 26-2 every year in 2A doesnt mean you can run every game with the Big boys.

Is SS not happy enough being state champions????

Do you people see Lone Peak on here, saying we need a state wide playoff so we can go have a chance to beat South Sevier?? NO because they dont need to play them to show anyone anything.

If you had a state wide finale playoff, like what Indiana and other states do, you need money to support it, would SS and all them little schools travel to Salt Lake for a tourney? no because of MONEY.

Be happy with 2A state champs. if you win it that is, because SS lost to the other good 2A team! ha

  • Ballfan6 Salt Lake City, UT
    Dec. 29, 2011 10:59 a.m.

I'm saying that tournament would take one year and all the little towns like SS would know they can't hang with the Lp's and Wj's.

Bingham Alum...South Sevier would is happy with their many gold 2A trophies and I am sure we would be happy with another one this year, assuming we get by Wasatch Academy, which is not a given. You are right, most years a tournament like this would be blowout city with the larger schools demolishing the smaller schools. However, the talent level in 2A in general this year is on par with what you will find in the larger classifications. Most D1 coaches would agree. Not just South Sevier but on the Wasatch Academy club as well. Besides the competition being first rate the UHSAA could put more dollars in their pocket with a tourney like this.

    I am a 5A guy.........and I say hose the BCS and hose the 1A thru 5A tourney.

    Let's do it Hoosier style.

Quit letting in the 4th place team in a Region of 6 members, usually with a 8-14 record into the tourney. Take top 3 every Region.

After about 2 years all the little schools will cry foul after getting blown out, and want to go back. Once in a while, a Cinderella will emerge....but 95 percent will go down in flames. Where it would be good is the 4A and 5A mx at the end. Maybe a Wasatch sneaks in or a 3A or 2A special group. That would be a true tourney and a true Champion.

That would be fun. And the small schools would be happy with a first round win....as they would be seeded against a 5A power most likely......

    Thoughts?

People seem to be throwing around the phrase "D-1 players" quite a bit. Getting looks by a division 1 school and getting an offer are two very different things. I am curious how many of these players actually have D-1 offers and from where. I have read about the following offers...if anyone knows of any other Utah players who have received offers-as opposed to looks- please post--I would love to hear. (* idicates they have committed)

    Loveridge* (WJ) Utah
    Moore* (Skyview) Utah State
    Haws*,Emery*& Mika* (LP) BYU
    Ott* (DHills) UC Davis
    Deng* Long Beach State
Bair* & Davis* (AF) Utah State
Van Dyke (East) Utah St, Utah, Weber St, ASU, Stanford
    Waddoups (AF) Cornell & Army
    Oliverson?? (Skyview) Utah State???

    Bingham basketball coach,

Dubach, is hated on because of the way the guy coaches, and treats everything!

his team with Clifford was very good, he did not have them ready to play against Fremont at all, he didnt get them prepared and you could see it,
again another reason to me that I feel is huge you have to consider,

They won about 55 plus games and lost bout 2 and only to WJ, in that horrible region,
That is the worst region set up for a team that is trying to stay competitive when they can play 10-12 guys all game long and be ok with it, then you get to state tourney time, your big boys play some teams that are good, and they have no idea what is going on.

2006 they won it, because of Brett Sommerville, they dont win it any other way, they guy played 10 guys all the time because that team was bred since it was 6 years old, 2-3 grand a year to play on there travel team,

With the players he has, and the athletes, he runs horrid offense for it.
Beat LP once Dubach! just once

Actually the reason for Dubach's success is the coaching. Just ask him.

Brighton Alum: Don't forget Race Parsons from South Sevier in your D1 prospects list. He very well could be the most complete player in any classification this year and he is only a junior.

I know Race is a real prospect but I was just listing those I knew about with offers so far. I have not read anything about offers for Race...do you know if he has any yet?
