Nice spin Dirk, but it's been almost 70 years since Utah failed to score more
than 42 points against BYU. Playing keep away for 30 seconds EVERY
possession was obviously a miserable failure. There is no solace in a 19-point
loss at home to your arch rival just because it wasn't quite as bad as Utah's
worst HC loss earlier in the week.
Really? This is what utah basketball is reduced to?
Well, Jiggly (yes, I said Jiggly...check out his arms) is right about one thing.
The Utes did come to play for the full 40 minutes. That was an
amazing foul chasing down Cusick? back and forth in the backcourt with 8 seconds
left, down by 20ish? so U could get the ball back and....what?...win? It was
indicative of most of the game with no focus on actually winning (see stallball
tactics down by 14-18 points with less than five minutes remaining), but rather
the fruitless and laughable continuation of a game plan that may have actually
worked had the U been able to stay within 6-8 points. Here's the worst
indictment...Boylen would have coached a better game. As anyone who
watched could conclude, the Runnin' Utes crawled, playing so as to not be
embarrassed. Funny, that seems to me to be more embarrassing (and pathetic) than
playing to win. But, as per Coach K, you are improving (lowest point
total ever against BYU notwithstanding). Well Done! Don't worry, you will appear
much improved when you get to the easy (PAC12) part of the season.
Sorry, there is a factual error in my last post. Utah did, at one point in time,
score fewer points in a basketball game against BYU. But, I wonder if there are
no living witnesses to it, even though it's in the books, does it still count?
@JayDeeIn that memorable 1996-97 1-25 BYU Basketball Season, BYU
scored 32 points in a 42 point loss against New Mexico.BYU did much
better against Utah, scoring 49 points in a 36 point loss. And yes,
there are living witnesses. And yes, it still counts.See,
it's easy to come up with stats showing how well your rivals have performed.
"Utes show some life"Really? After they put up their
lowest scoring output of the season? They are clinging onto life support at this
JayDee -You have zero idea what you're talking about. I won't bother
elaborating because it's more than obvious it wouldn't do any good.
well, imma say it for y'all...fire that coach, fire that coach, fire that
coach....i can't believe a coach would ever game plan like that.
Lots of spin by the utes to rationalize this at-home drubbing. Being a gracious
loser rather than bragging up their effort would have been better. The Utah Man
attitude was - if your team loses and no one sees it, is it really a loss? The
Cougars let the score do the talking.
Utah has a chance to beat Idaho State this week and may be able to beat Portland
as well.Go Utes!
Things could get alot worse for the Utes:Report: Penn State Contacts
Utah Head Coach Kyle WhittinghamNCAA, Penn State Penn State
has contacted Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham about its coaching vacancy,
according to CBS Sports. According to the report, Whittingham still has interest
in the Arizona State opening.Whittingham, 52, has been the head
coach at Utah since 2005, when Urban Meyer left to become the head coach at the
University of Florida. Whittingham has a 65-25 record as a head coach and is 6-1
in bowl games. He was named the AFCA Coach of the Year in 2008.Penn
State has been looking for a new head coach since legendary coach Joe Paterno
was fired during the Jerry Sandusky scandal. According to ESPN, interim head
coach Tom Bradley will be in charge until the Nittany Lions bowl game.
Proficiency at dribbling the ball for 30 seconds at a time and boring the crap
out of all who watched? Brutal. Nice "by my calculations they can't beat
us by more than 20 if we do this," tactic.
Anyone who talks about an embarrassing loss at home to a rival is off their
rocker. 54-10 ring a bell???
Hey, according to one poster, Utah has a CHANCE to beat Idaho State.Go
Alright then, if scoring the fewest points against your rival in almost 70 years
is considered "showing some life", knock yourself out. Sagarin still has the Utes ranked ahead of 16 teams, so I guess there's still
some hope there.#44 BYU#100 WSU#151 USU#176 UVU#301 SUU#329 Utah (out of 345 D1 teams)Which of these is not

still officially winless in his rankings. Utah's last three non-conference
games, and probably only remaining opportunities to pick up a D1 win: #283 Idaho State#182 Portland#126 Weber State
That was life shown by Utah? Wow! I would hate to see them without life then.
That was pathetic.
Still clinging to Football SammyG? How does this sound 14-17 against a 2-10
team at home. At least BYU's loss to Utah was to a team with a winning record.
Oh, and please take Jake Heaps so BYU can destroy Utah with him at the helm. So
many promises by Jake, so little delivery. Next year will hopefully be
different, but for Today, we have Basketball. This will be a long winter for
the Utes! LOL

ahead and let us all know when Whitt takes that ASU job.
After all of the spin,BYU shot 39% FG, 33% 3-PT, had their lowest
scoring output of the season, but held Utah to their lowest point total in the
series since the 40's, and the Cougars won comfortably in the HC for the third
straight year, 6 straight BYU wins, and 10 of the last 11.BYU turns
its attention to trying to pull off an upset of 6th ranked Baylor.Utah turns its attention to trying to beat 283rd ranked Idaho State for their
first D1 win.
I would think the utes can beat Idaho St, if they can't/don't, it will be a sad
day for the utes.
ThomasJeffersonI don't always agree with Barry Switzer, but in this
case he's spot on - one game does not a season make.Of course when
you have little else to show for the season, you cling to whatever you can.BYU is playing for another 10+ win season and Top 25 finish.Utah will have to live with the fact that the Utes couldn't even beat a 2-10
at home to win a pathetically weak division.
That COULD have been signs of life. It could also have been a death rattle.
Sports fan, Ever heard of the Sun Bowl. Yeah that what that gets you. It
keeps your team and fans interested in the season until the last play of the
last game. It makes it so your season doesn't end on Sept. 17th. Who cares who
is ranked 106th or 26th? No one.
SG ChildWhat about the Sun Bowl? Utah fans are so excited about
playing in the Sun Bowl that the Utes will be lucky to have 2,000 fans in El
Paso.EVERYBODY, except apparently Utah fans who are in denial, is
interested in seeing their team ranked in the final Top 25.Guaranteed, BYU will have many more fans in the Armed Forces Bowl than Utah
will have fans in the Sun Bowl.
UfanUnfortunately true. Utah fans don't travel all that well to
begin with and it's very unlikely that many of them are going to be excited
about spending New Years Eve in El Paso to watch a 7-5 team that fell woefully
short of expectations this season.
@ ThomasJefferson or the 48-24 embarrassment or the 51-17 beat down
, when two of the "Y " victories came from last second miracles.
54-10 should be that easy to forget as it will just take another place next to
the other spankings dished out during the Whittingham era.
So much hate from "so called Cougar fans" and "so called Ute
fans". Some of you are full time trolls. I doubt any of you even graduated
from either institution. Now, go and ask your parents if Santa Clause is coming
this year. The rivalry is over... Football and Basketball.I can only hope they suspend the schedule for both sports. At least for a few
season. You zealots ruin the party every time. Get a life and start
respecting yourself! Yah you!
@ motorbike (I can't believe you care enough to post @ 1:28 A.M.)Since you claim I have "zero idea what [I'm] talking about," yet
refuse to even refute one item. let me take what I posted point by point and you
show me the errors. I await your response.1) Jiggy Watkins has
packed on some pounds.2) I question what purpose does it serves to
intentionally foul down by 19 with eight seconds left in the game?3)
I credit the U for the hold-the-ball game plan (which worked with success early)
and state it may have worked had they stayed close throughout.4) I
question running the shot clock down when trailing by 18 with less than five
minutes remaining (It's akin to stubbornly running the football with 7:30 left
in the fourth trailing by four touchdowns.)5) The Boylen comment ...
just a dig. (I couldn't resist.)6) After half, the Utes played to
not be blown out...not to win. Sad! If you see it differently, please
explain.7) The PAC 12 does not represent the best basketball being
played out west.
Well one thing for sure, the Utes did go down swinging. There's a difference
between playing with intensity and playing dirty. The Utes chose the later.
Lucky for the utes they had PAC 12 officials or they would have all fouled out
in the first half. I'm glad Hartsock only escaped with a black eye.
pebblesLosing to a 10-loss team (once at home; once by a shutout) is
infinitely more embarrassing than losing by a wide margin to a decent team. And, having your heart ripped out after nearly tasting victory, is
infinitely harder to deal with than being blown out.
Do any Byu fans actually think Byu would do better in the Pac-12 (football)?
As a fan I desire that Utah be able to play teams it can win and in return earn
respect of opposing fans, sports media and college posters. This 1-8 season in a
PAC12 is indicative of the greatness of the conference and shows Utah cannot
compete with this great of conference. Playing such great non coference teams
like Utah has played is not good to make for a good record and makes Utah be not
as good when it is a BCS power. Teams like Boise, San Diego Christian, Montana
St. are to good for Utah if we are going to have wins before PAC12 is started.
Not being on tv is not good without even some money for not being on it for all
these years. Hopefully schedulers will schedule teams from Big West, Midwestern,
NAIA, Big Sky conferences so Utah can have wins but rankings probably won't
happen even with them.
Utes show some life? Really? I think the only life out there was when the
football boys showed up to cheerlead the red chairs.Hilarious to
hear that Whit is reported to be being looked at by Penn State and others. Can
you imagine Chow taking the reins? That would be funny. And this was
a basketball story? Oh, that's par, utes don't count basketball this
re:jazzer YES!!! The difference between the Y and the U are almost nill.
Neither has the same strength but each can hold their own. I'm always confused
that Utah fans have become such elitists even though they were the fall back
plan for the PAC 12. To pose a question like you did is pure arrogance.
@ 3grandslams"I'm always confused that Utah fans have become
such elitists even though they were the fall back plan for the PAC 12. To pose a
question like you did is pure arrogance".Fall back plan? When
are you Cougies going to give that up? Utah was joining the Pac-10 regardless of
how the conference expands; Pac-12 (Utah and Colorado) or the Pac-16 (Utah,
Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State). The Pac-10 was never
an option for Texas A&M because they don't want to follow Texas around. They
wanted to join the SEC (A&M has already been accepted into the SEC one year
later). The Pac-10 doesn't want Baylor and who can blame them? Those Cougie fans
who say otherwise are arrogant! When you have a conference of high
academics such as Cal, Stanford, and UCLA. The high profiled athletics of USC
and Oregon. You need to be an "elite" school with "elitist"
attitudes to compete with these schools. Utah fans are adjusting to their new
"elite" role being a member of the Pac-12. Sorry Cougies, Utah is no
longer a mid-major school.
Looks like the 54-10 debacle/Heaps going away present will be the only win of
the academic year for the Utes in the Deseret Duel...... How is the rumble in
the rockies gonna pan out? Only victory coming in Gymnastics? Well, luckily we
have a few months before we see how futile that 'rivalry' went when all the dust
settles and we move on to Season 2012-13. Looking very forward to September
15th...... I guarantee it won't be a 44 point sandblast... Of that you can be
certain! Oh congrats Cougar women for also beating da Utes this weekend. :)
Great weekend to be a Cougar!
JayDee -I'll simply point to another post of yours... the one where
you state knowing that Jordan Loveridge is demanding the U hire West Jordan's
coach and bring 2 of Loveridge's teammates up to the hill with him or he'll head
to a different school. That earlier post of yours is proof enough
that you have no idea what you're talking about.
@3grandslams"Lucky for the utes they had PAC 12 officials." Official are assigned to games, and while they may work one conference
more that others, there is no such thing as conference officals in college
basketball, so consequently no PAC 12 officials. "even though
they were the fall back plan for the PAC 12."That's ok they are
in good company. Harrison Ford was the fall back plan for "Raiders",
Tom Hanks was the fall back plan for Forrest Gump, or and that's right, Bronco
Mendenhall was the fall back plan for the Y.
@royalblue"BYU shot 39% FG, 33% 3-PT, had their lowest scoring output
of the season"Correction their lowest scoring output was
against Wisconsin where they only scored 56.
@ motorbike (Nice to see you again)Why would you not refute one
aspect of my earlier post on this article. Also, if you actually go
over to the BYU article where I referenced Loveridge (not on this article by the
way) you would immediately see that the statement was tongue-in-cheek. (Hint* no
one puts a P.S. on their letter of intent.) The sarcastic implication was that U
of U hoops has slipped so much, that a high school team of the caliber of West
Jordan would be an improvement. You're much too sensitive. You need a
"just kidding" detector.I hope someone gives you a sense of
humor for Christmas. I sincerely hope you have a great holiday
BYU did not beat a single good team this year in football. Dont even try to say
Ole Miss is good. Utah deserves to be in the Pac 12. Im not so sure they would
do all that good in Pac. Just my opinion
jazzerThe ONLY D1 team with a winning record that Utah beat was BYU,
but, unlike Utah, BYU didn't lose to one of the worst teams in the country, AT
HOME.BYU's losses:Texas(7-5)Utah(7-5)TCU(10-2)Utah's losses:USC(10-2)Wash(7-5)Cal(7-5)ASU(6-6)Col(3-10)
So signs of life means losing to BYU in both men and women's basketball.I liked the effort of utah...coach Kry is doing the best with what he
has, if he had the players he had at Montana it would have been a much better
game...still a lose but a better game.
As an ASU alum, I can easily say that ASU has way too many problems caused by
those upstairs running the sports program. They have made a mess of their
entire sports output. The only bright spot has been the women's softball team.
Whittingham would inherit a no win situation.Sitting on the ball was
a smart move by Utah's coach. It gave them a slight chance to stay close. Had
they tried to run with the Cougs, BYU would have found its rhythm early and the
outcome far worse. Utah is going to need at least three years to rebuild. Give
'em a break unless you can walk on and to it better.BYU will find
out how much it has improved Saturday.
