What is going on with the refs?!! What a crock. Call a game refs. Utah is driving out of control, flopping all over the place, and you're calling touch fouls on BYU! C'mon PAC 12 refs, at least call if square.

My Elders quorum team could beat the Utes by 100.

Dribble around until the time clock is under 5 seconds, launch a shot and miss. Brilliant.

Whether football or basketball, PAC refs are incapable of calling a fair game. Remember Utes, when you used to complain about that? That said, the Cougs are playing flat. Hope they heat up soon.

  • Bluecat82 Minneapolis, MN

Tell you what...Utah had a game plan and has stuck to it...it's worked on the defensive end, but the problem is they're so putrid on offense...33 points in 37 minutes won't win you too many ballgames.

For the Utes, chin up... Portland is coming.

    For the Cougars...bring on Baylor.

  • NevadaCoug Overton, NV
    Dec. 10, 2011 2:00 p.m.

Utah acting like it was a close game at the end...not because they wanted to play hard till the end; not because their coach wanted them to work on anything; but just so they wouldn't be held to under 40 points.

Putrid offense from both teams, but BYU still won. A win is a win.

  • Disgruntled Nephi, UT

Well, that's six in a row. Great moral victory for the Utes, though. On a positive note things should get easier for Utah when they start PAC regular season. Home losses by the PAC to the MWC, WAC and WCC in eighteen hours. Conference of champions indeed!

I don't know why we save our worst for the Utes. Shot terribly, did not rebound all that well, mediocre point guard play (Cusick made it tolerable). Davies still struggling, not sure why. Finals next week, but we better play a TON better against Baylor or they will run us out of the gym. Love Hartsock.

What an ugly style of basketball the Utes play. When your goal is to just hold the ball to make the game look closer than it was, you get a brand of hoops that nobody enjoys.

College Basketball Referees are not assigned by conference. Although some refs may work certain coferences more than others, there is no such thing as PAC 12 refs in basketball.

What a horrible game. I hate it when BYU plays down to the level of the competition. The refs definitely would have liked a chance to help the Utes out, but their is only so much they can do besides bailing Jiggy out everytime he drove in out of control. Yes Utah there are other sports besides football, enjoy the next 9 months.

Wasn't able to watch the game, but I heard Utah shot less than 30% and the Y still couldn't cover the spread. After the start we've had to the season and the current state of our program, that's about the best I could've hoped for. Must be a let down for a few particularly obsessed "fans" on these boards who have been thirsting for a 44 point win to soothe a burn they got in September.

Here's hoping Coach K can win a couple more games and get things rebuilt as quickly as possible.

    Go UTES!!

Let's put this in perspective a little bit. A few Cougar fans disappointed because it wasn't worse. First of all anytime you play an opponent that holds the ball until the final 5 seconds of the shot clock and then shoots...well...it's kind of hard to find any rythem. And second you have to give the Utes coaching staff credit for a game plan totally designed to keep your team from being embarrassed. I believe this is the style of BBall that Ute fans can look forward to all year!!!!

Despite the refs' best efforts (especially in the first half), BYU won the game.

I do have to agree that it was an ugly game.

Moderate, I have very bad news for you:

    1) Pretty much only Ute fans and BYU haters think Utah's football team is better than BYU's football team (otherwise they would have been ranked higher sometime the last month and a half).

    2) There is a good chance that USU's football team is better than Utah's. I'm sure they would have beat Utah if they played this year (although the better team does not always win, as we both know).

    3) WSU is also better than Utah in basketball.

    4) USU better than BYU is basketball? Hard to tell. If they play in Provo, BYU wins. If they play in Logan, USU wins. However, evidence suggests if they play on a neutral court, BYU wins.

Can anyone explain why some sportscasters, athletic departments and other folks keep referring to the Utah basketball team as the Runnin' Utes?

I agree with your assessment of basketball, but you have to be kidding about football right? What in your right mind thinks that BYU is at all better than Utah in football? Come on BYU fans. Ugh, what an ugly game.

Utah did their best to keep the game close, but in the end, the Utes are simply a horrible basketball team. No offensive flow whatsoever. Majerus would be horrified to see what passes for offense at the U nowadays.

The only bright side is the Utes will hit absolute rock bottom this year and anything they do next season will be an improvement.

BYU still has a very good chance of finishing with their 5th 10+ win season and 5th Top 25 Ranking in the last 6 years.

It's not just BYU fans who think this.

What in our right minds make us think BYU is better than Utah?

Let's see.... BYU didn't lose to any lower-tier PAC teams (except for Utah). Utah did. BYU didn't need overtime and a field goal to beat a team like Washington State. Utah did. (It could be argued BYU needed a lot to beat USU, but USU is probably better than many of the teams Utah lost to). BYU didn't lose to a 2-10 team at home. Utah did.

Oh, and I don't think you guys want to make the "team A beat team B, so team A is better" claim. If that were true, then Colorado is the 2nd worst team in the PAC-12.

Interesting game plan for the Utes: Stall and take as much time as possible so the Cougars can't hand us another historical home loss. To their credit, it worked, but it makes a pretty sad statement about the state of their program.

Oh, and was anyone else as confused as I was when the Utes started fouling in the final minute when they were down by 20?

Very physical game, poorly played and poorly officiated. The Utes got a lot of help to keep it from being a bigger blowout than it was.

Since so many have brought up the topic of football on this basketball article, I'll add my two-bits that my fellow Cougars aren't going to like:

I have always been taught that the best and only sure way of determining if you are better than your opponent is to look at the outcome when you go head to head. If your opponent beats you, especially when they beat you soundly, they are better than you. It is as simple as that. Ratings mean nothing compared to head-to-head results.

Someone suggested that Majerus would have hated how the Utes offense looked today. If I remember correctly Majerus (and Reid) would have loved the lack of offense, holding the ball till the shot clock was run down, and then saying it was great defense. Majerus would have loved the Utes offense today. It was just bad basketball, mostly because Utah did not play to win but rather to not lose big.

The Ute basketball team is nothing but freshman and a new coach, give them a freaking break.

The program needs to develop a little, something that takes TIME.

Nobody ever hyped up this Utah basketball team, so why criticize? The Ute trolls criticise Cougie fans because everything they say is hype, so when we come out and win 54-10, it's open season.

I went to the game this afternoon. A few comments.

Very few Utah fans present. The Utes did not enjoy a home court advantage. The student section had the band and about 10 rows of students. The remaining section was students disguised as red chairs. Very disappointing.

The non-student Utah fans were also missings. It is sad to realize that the Utah fan base are six game wonders. Show up for 6 football games and then disappear. Know what, they are not "Utah" fans. They are only football fans. Big difference. 2nd disappointment of the day.

The 3rd was simply "Utah held the ball". I don't believe I have ever seen a game where a team was down by 15 plus point with less than 10 minutes to play, hold the ball on offense the first 25 seconds of the 35 clock. Normally you try to score quickly and then try to get the ball back. Not today. The only effort came with about 2 minutes left when Utah started fouling. I guess they decided it was important to score in the 40's.

Ugly game is right. But at keep away, Utah won today. Big time!!

What makes you think an article about a game between BYU and Utah is a "Ute" article?

Just because nobody hyped your team, doesn't mean they're immune from being criticized as one of the worst teams in the history of Utah basketball.

The fact that Utah fans have to use football smack in a basketball article shows just how desperate they are for anything to save face.

btw, BYU has NINE freshmen on this year's team; how many freshman does Utah have?

Utah's excuse isn't that they're young; they're simply not any good.

As a BYU fan this game was really frustrating. Sure it's nice to beat the utes but this was not the beat down I was hoping for. Seems Larry K was in this one "to not lose by 40". And it worked. Good strategy Coach Kry. If it weren't for the shot clock, I'm sure the Utes would have been content losing 15 - 12.

To their credit, the Utes played decent defense. And Wiggy is decent on the offensive side. But there is not much other talent on the offensive side of the ball for the Utes. Too bad Watkins is a Senior and the rebuilding starts all over again next year.

The Cougs shot losy and still gave the Utsies a 19 point beat down. Sure 19 points may feel good after your last 31 point beatdown. But I hate to break the news to you - 19 points is still a beatdown.

Maybe the PAC12 is better than I thought - Arizona State whipped North Dakota State by 3 points today.

Good luck to the Utes against Idaho State and Portland. They are your last chances for wins this season.

Funny how when Ute trolls try to convince themselves that the Utes have a more credible football "program" than BYU, they point to the Utes overall record against BYU, and discount the National Chamionship from nearly 30 years ago and fail to acknowledge that the Utes only have three conference championships ever and have only finished in the top 25 four times ever!

Yet in the same breath, they defend the current state of Ute basketball and guarantee that the Utes will get back to their glory because they are a "quality program" based on the Majeras years and a trip to the finals almost 15 years ago...even when BYU now holds the all time series lead, has won the last six games, and 10 of the last 11.

So Ute Fan, which way is it, poor little brothers. BTW Chris B, I noticed that your stable of Pac10 "athletes" were clearly superior today? Hmmmm.....

I've seen Junior College teams that can blow this Ute outfit out of the tub. Let's just be humane and quit beating a dead horse. It's over this year, pure and simple. The Utes will just have to take their beatings as the Cougars did that one year after Roger Reid left.

I also found it hilarious that utah was holding the ball until there was about 8 seconds left on the shot clock. Then they would give it to Jiggy and he would drive and try to do something with it. It rarely worked. It did slow down the game to a painful pace.

Back in my day if my team were down, we would be running and gunning trying to get back into the game. Not Utah. They have completely given up and are just trying to not lose by record margins.

A 30+ pt loss to Cal State Fullerton?

I never thought I would see the day that the utes would fall into this kind of abyss. It is going to be a LONG time before they turn this ship around.

At least the Pac12 as a whole is stinking it up this year so maybe the margin of loss won't look so bad once league games start.

Wow. It is actually kind of sad.

    For those arguing about football...

Utah is better than BYU... they played each other and Utah won 54-10. This is an indisputable fact.

BYU is ranked higher than Utah. This too is an indisputable fact.

Therefore, end the stupid arguments. Utah is better than BYU. BYU is ranked higher than Utah.

Both can and do exist, so whichever side you're on, deal with it!

Congrats to BYU... you killed us today. And yes, it would've been worse if Coach K - yes I said Coach K - hadn't slowed it up.

For those who say it was an effort to not get destroyed - absolutely right, which makes the game plan smart doesn't it?!

And saying the coaches were conceding the game is ridiculous, that game plan was the only way the Utes could keep it close enough to have a chance in the end which they darn near could have had if jiggy would've hit his free throws today and Washburn could've stayed out of foul trouble.

The Utes made progress today, I'm proud of them. But to make things clear... BYU is ranked higher than Utah and in this case they are better than Utah. Congrats Cougars.

Is Iowa State better than Oklahoma State?
    Is Colorado better than Utah?

Higher ranking (based on an entire season's accomplishments) trumps a one-game accomplishment.

The game plan should be based on doing your best to try to win, not on how to lessen the embarrassment of losing.

Bottom line is, BYU has just as many young players as Utah; the biggest difference is the Cougars have better players and they're better coached.

When you're down by 20 points with 5 minutes left in the game, it's not rocket science to figure out that you can't spend 30 seconds on each possession passing the ball around the perimeter if you're actually trying to win the game.

Utah was better than BYU this year, try to deal with it. BYU is ranked higher than Utah, I've dealt with it.
BYU is better than the Utes in basketball, they proved it today.
And you obviously didn't catch what I was saying about slowing the game down. The coaches slowed it down to give the Utes a shot at winning, which was the smartest decision they could've made. It was certainly not an attempt to lose by less as you suggest. Though even that would still mean it creates a closer game which would seem awfully wise to anyone with an objective mind.

Your post made no sense, being that I never said a word about freshmen, and whether they'd grow up to be great juniors and seniors one day.
That being said, I'll join the conversation by adding my prediction that Utah will be drastically different in as little as 2 years. Their best two players can't play right now because of transfer rules. They would be our starting point guard and shooting guard right now if they could play.
Add 3 good recruits that have already signed, a legit center coming off his mission, another decent center transfer and the possible return of 7'3" David Foster and this is a whole new team next year.

Lets see - The Pac 12 did not take BYU because it was a religious school that would not play on Sunday so here is what you get -

First college football is not played on Sunday but Basketball sometimes is - so the Pac got the Utes who can and will play on Sunday. Actually, what they got was the Washington Generals who would play some games on Sundays. (That's the team that always played the Harlem Globetrotters and lost - over 13,000 times )

Which is what I suspect they wanted - a team that would play but not really challenge the powers that be.

So Utes - I remain jealous of your Pac 12 status but never of that team you field. You're suppose to be a serious player and you lose to the Buffs in football and everyone else in Basketball - being on the big stage almost makes it even more pathetic.

So continue to mock the Cougs for who they beat but please don't lose sight of the fact that currently you are beating -hmmm - no one.

    @UU33 and Eddie

I still remember when it was I realized how classless utah "fans" are. I went up to the hc in the eraly 90's to watch bYU play in the ncaa tournament. This is when they had Shawn Bradley. Most of the players on BYU's roster were kids from Utah. When BYU came out for warmups they were immediately booed by the utah "fans" in attendence. These same utah "fans" continued to boo them during pre game introductions and then throughout the entire game.

Up to that point in time I hadn't given the university of utah or its "fans" mush thought at all other than when a game with BYU was approaching. But that is when I realized how filled with hate for BYU they really are. They booed a bunch of players from Utah, kids that grew up and went to high school here. And utah wasn't even playing, just BYU.

I remember how BYU fans used to cheer when they announced the scores of other games at LES and it was announced utah was winning or had won. That went away as the utah "fans" classlessness finally rubbed off on BYU fans.
