A bad influence in the locker room can be detrimental to a team trying to win some games.

As good a time for the coaches to make a point as any. Probably helps secure a 1 win season, but hey...it is what it is this year.
Hang in there fellow Ute fans, this year is exactly what it was expected to be...there's good things waiting in the wings for next year. I ain't scared.

Coach K.has courage to do what is best for the team in all ways, besides seeking a win...Utes have a great basketball tradition, hope to see them get things turned right side up, be whole and win every game...except when they play the Y.

It will be interesting to see if the team now has fewer turnovers.

    @ Brave Sir Robin

Umm, did that guy have any time to get benched? I think he spent most his time making UMASS and Fresno look good, whilst simultaneously breaking team rules.

Re: "54-10" So, I'm guessing an 82-52 beat down of highly touted Fresno State is akin to the football game? Come to think about it, I think I may change my display name to "82-52" or, better yet, to "1-6"? My word how the basketball program continues to dive. But welcome to the Pac 12 anyhow. Enjoy the conference schedule.

  • UU32 Bountiful, UT
    Dec. 5, 2011 4:52 p.m.

What this means for the Utah team:
    - Kareem Storey gets more minutes and opportunities to grow.
    - More team ball.
    - Less Jiggy dribble-fest.
    - Hines will have to slide over and play more point.
    - Odunsi will have more minutes at the 2 (and some at point).
    - Martin will have more minutes at 2 and less at 3.
    - Mathews will have to play some minutes at the 3.
    - Random walks on get more time (ouch).

    What this doesn't mean:
    - That the Utes will be any better this year in the win column.

Long, long, long, long, long season.

che loco - of course there will be defections at the end of the season - the team is going to win 1 or 2 games. Weed out the less talented to make room for more talent. Next year's recruiting class could beat this years team right now.

"I have suspended Josh Watkins indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team."

Conduct detrimental to the team, eh?

Coach k is shooting for zero wins against D1 wins and Jiggy was scoring entirely too many points.

    Good move coach.

Wow. Just wow. 8 transfers last year, which is part of the reason why you're headed for the abyss and you are pulling out transfer smack. Unreal.

  • Eddie Syracuse, UT
    Dec. 5, 2011 6:41 p.m.

All it will take is a couple of transfers this year and the headlines will be all over ESPN and the Nation and NO ONE will want to go the u to play bball. Mark it down now... if it happens, the train wreck will last for 5 to 10 years, at least. "One sport u" will be not only the laughing stalk of the State, but of the Nation. Bottom of the pac 12 is a foregone conclusion. Tail-spin is beginning and will crash and burn. Isn't it great to be a ute?

Wait, Wait, Wait...this is a Ute fan saying their BB don't transfer...Please someone help him get his head out of the paper bag.

I admire Coach K. for pulling the plug on a problem...Ok, so it won't affect the season since it is in the toilet anyway...but by him putting his foot down now could help solve problems in the future...Good call coach.

  • Qwest Perfected Salt Lake City, UT
    Dec. 5, 2011 8:27 p.m.

I'm not sure what he did but I'm glad to see coach K do something about a negative influence on the team. The Utes certainly could use his scoring, but the way this season is going there isn't much down side to cutting a guy that hasn't bought in to the program.

I think coach K has the ability and the right assistant coaches on his staff to turn the program around they just need to get some players in the system that can compete. Boylen had pieced together a team of JC tranfers to try and win but that wasn't a good long term answer for success. Combine that with the mass exodus at the end of the last two seasons and this team is all but depleted.

I hope they can win a few more games this season. I would like to let the cougs keep the honor of having a 1 win season.

Good grief! Whether it is BYU football or U of U basketball, there does not seem to be the excitement in Utah college sports we have come to expect. I would have to say that overall, this is turning into a disappointing 2011. Thank goodness for a deep run into the NCAA and USU's football revival. It gave this Utahn something to celebrate.

Dear Brave Sir Robin how do you compare being suspended indefinitely for the good of the team and being benched because you were not doing well? Man some of you Ute fans will try and make any comparison no matter how ridiculous it is. Start using that superior education you claim to have and make logical comparisons.

Now, how many of the Ute Basketball players left last year? Was it is 4 or 6.

If 8,000 BYU fans show up for the Game with the Utes then there will be 8500 fans in the field house. This should be a good game. Looking forward to it.

The Coach has to be in control of the team, not the other way around. Let's see how many points this young man scores against BYU this week. 0

I would argue that there are far more individuals on these Desert News boards that claim BYU provides a superior education, many times in a condescending manner.

    Just sayin'.

This is an article about Watkins not Sharp or Cusick.

    re: bigmanUTE
"utes make it to the tourny next year. guaranteed"

Did the Utes enter an AAU tournament? I thought there were age limits on those.

I hate to break the news, but Utes will not be good next year either. They may be better than this year, but wins will be in the single digits. 1 - 3 wins this year. 7 - 9 wins next year.

  • Sanford SANDY, UT

Cali Coug, Nice try, but Watkins is a senior. At this point, he has already played in enough games that he wouldn't have any eligibility left, so he can't transfer.
