I was quite grateful for the outcome, and on the surface, the stats look very
impressive. However, while watching the game, I would have to disagree with the
headline selected for this article. Large yardage totals notwithstanding,
Nelson did not look sharp.Bless the announcers, who seem to always
go with the flow of the outcome rather than analyze what actually happened. I
could easily have seen them flailing at Nelson for throwing the ill-advised pass
while falling to the turf as he was being tackled by two Warriors, that ...
floated into Cougar hands for a drive-saving first down (I was waiting for the
"pick"!) Riley missed a number of wide-open receivers on medium
length passes, and his long passes were regularly under thrown. The
"YAC" was huge in the total.Riley was understandably
reticent to run, compared with his pre-injury games ... thus negating his
perceived "advantage" over Jake Heaps. The Warriors stuffed most all
Cougar attempts to run early in the game. While we'll never know, it would have
been interesting to see how the traditional pro-style passer with a rocket arm
would have fared against a defense extremely vulnerable to the pass.
"Nelson looks sharp in 1st game back"I would hope so that
was one of the worst teams I have watched this year (but still not as bad as the
BUFFS, hey ute fan). Or should I be like most BYU fans... Riley is the greatest
QB, and we would not have the record today with out him. lol, we have nothing to
be thrilled about, happy yes, thrilled no.
Nelson did look very good. BYU ofense moved the ball well in the first half but
weren't consistent. They literally blew Hawaii off the field in the second half.
It was a blast to watch.
I'M a Ute fan but love to watch Nelson play, wish we had a QB.
When it come right down to it, football is just entertainment and Riley Nelson
is pure entertainment. He is much more fun to watch than Heeps.
There will always be those that are unsatisfied regardless of the otucome of the
game. They will find things to criticize such as their preference for another
player who didn't play, or the play calling, or a particular play, etc.Personally all I care about is winning. That is it. Win the game. I do not
care if the qb throws for 300+ yds and multiple td's. I do not care if the
defense pitches a shutout. I do not care about anything other than winning. That
is what I like, winning.
Hail Mary!Riley reminds me of a Bowl Game in the past...Everything
he throws up is a "Hail Mary" passBYU I hope learns from
Utah...when Riley gets hurt because of his ad-lib playing, you better have a
back up ready...which you do not.
Nelson is a gamer. Just as Tebow is not a prototypical NFL QB, but who raises
the level of his team's play. Nelson raises the level of the team's play. And he
is a good passer with a decent arm - better than Tebow actually.I
remember the same criticisms directed at Steve Young, too. Pure passers like,
Linert et al. are great, but Nelson and Tebow create a different dimension. Load
up for the run, Nelson passes. Nelson is great on the underneath routes, but can
throw long enough to complete a few big plays too.I hope Heaps
redshirts next year, but if he transfers, so be it. Bronco has to start Nelson
unless he gets hurt or doesn't get a haircut.
