Ha! What a laugh!I was recently involved in a Model UN competition
at BYU. The countless snide, rude, degrading comments about the current
President of the United States was absolutely horrifying. I thought I might have
made a wrong turn and landed in Iran somewhere!I agree with this
article. We should be showing more respect for those holding public office and
in positions of "public service".But I have a snowball's
hope in Las Vegas that anything will change. What I found most
fascinating is that those students spewing the most vitriol were children of
several of our State Senators (names withheld out of "respect")!
AMEN! So much in our world is divided - and there are points on which we must
never compromise. Yet, I believe that in the public square there are very few
absolutes and only a few of those should be "deal breakers". I relish
good public dialogue. I admire the man who can change his mind in the face of
better information or new perspective. Isn't the very foundation of mortality
that we need to "change" from who we are to who we want to become -
and don't we joy in that process? Why can't we appreciate it in public life? I
appreciate the reconition that most in public life are really trying to help.
Thanks for the perspective!Bob
I like that this article is aimed at what we teach our children. We can only
hope that the next generation will be less cynical and less divided politically
than this one is!And yes, why not assume that those who run for office
actually want to serve the public and are not only a bunch of power hungry
charlatans who will say anything they have to, and make any deals they can to

The Eyres are advising exactly what the LDS General Authorities are teaching.
Inclusion, tolerance and being careful with judgement of others. In today's
world and in the Worldwide Church we must recognize people come from all
persuasions, cultures, economic strata and upbringing. We no longer live in a
19th century or 20th century world or Church. We can be good role
models of what Christ taught. In His ministry He included Roman soldiers and
officials (like Matthew), Samaritans, Gentiles, Pharisees and all others.
Certainly politicians within our own country should be respected and supported.
If we can't do that, then we aren't ready to include all the billions far
different than us.
"One of the best things we can teach our children is to be genuine and
open-minded the opposite of cynical and partisan. And we should teach them to
trust and look for the positive in people rather than to assume that others
always have selfish personal motives. We should even teach our kids to try to
respect and appreciate viewpoints that are different from their own"Can't teach the children without teaching adults first. As a former LDS
member who is liberal I had a fairly significant number of instances of people
saying I was going against the prophet or aligned with satan with regards to
some of my political positions. A Gallup poll found that 8% of all U.S. LDS
members are liberal and 20% of inactive LDS members are liberal while the
overall inactivity rate is 21%. You can calculate 50% LDS liberal inactivity;
political conflict probably plays a role in some of that. I don't
mean to pick on the LDS church with that, it's just my personal experience
reference; I'm sure all churches that have a strong majority of members as part
of either political leaning have that problem too.
To ATL134...You said "A Gallup poll found that 8% of all U.S. LDS
members are liberal and 20% of inactive LDS members are liberal" You make an excellent point. Practically all LDS members were raised during
the late 20th century. Their indoctrination was strongly conservative and
inflenced by the Church's reaction to the '60s rebellion, the still-US majority
of members and publications such as Mormon Doctrine and the xxThousand Years.(by
the way, I'm a 62 year old convert from 1976).Now we live in the
next century, which may seem like the next millineum to old timers. President
Hinkley, and even more so President Monson, have pointed us toward the greater
light of acceptance, tolerance, openess and less political leaning. It will take some time for the 4 million or so of us western-US members to
accept these changed world views.
