Knowing is half the battle. This team and the coaches are learning that turnovers and 3-point shooting/defense are the biggest thorns in their sides.
Correct those two areas and hopefully this team will start to see some close games they can steal away in the end.
I don't have thoughts of grandeur for this team, but if they could simply learn and execute in those areas, well then, I think they could play some respectable ball the rest of the year and build for next year.

Sorry, I just had to see it in print one more time.

The latest RPI ranking put the Utes at No. 319 out of 344 college basketball teams.

St. Mary's is No. 1 (remind me what conference they are in)

Montana State, a team that beat Utah, is No. 336.

A winning streak? Let's get a win againt a D-1 first. Unfortunately the RPI ranking is probably accurate. Hopefully the team will keep playing hard and show some improvement.

    Come on, really?

Is there really 24 teams out there who are worse?

"Utes believe they can get on a winning track"

Good analogy considering the train wreck that the rundown Utes have become.

    @ Cougar Trolls!

Enjoy talking smack about our basketball team. All this means is your football season is already over. Well your football season ended when you lost to Utah 54-10 in week 3 and I don't blame you for directing your comments now towards our basketball team. BYU fans better start getting used to having your season end early because "one loss and your season is over!" The joys of Independence!

"Enjoy talking smack about our basketball team."

We will. It's not hard to talk smack about a program that's been a train wreck for years, especially when its fans are still so arrogant.

The fact that you have to resort to talking smack about a game played way back in September, shows just how pathetic your football team also is.

    Elmer Fudd:

Those BYU fans are just a bunch of Rascally Rabbits huh? The reason why people are talking about basketball on this board is because this is a basketball article.

And as for "one loss and the season is over" I'd say that happened for the Utes right around the Adams State game.

Don't worry. We will. Probably for many, many years.

    LOL!

This is in no way surprising. I think we all expected this before the season started.
To all byu trolls, I think a train wreck is defined by a team that goes 1-25 for the season. I can only think of one school that has accomplished that and it wasn't the Utes. Hopefully we can get a few more wins and avoid train wreck status.

Yeah it's not like were talking about 1984 here or 2 outa 3, maybe Harline is still open, only a real tool would talk like that...

Whoa there Nellie! You have to walk before you can run. I realize this year is simply a "testing the waters" period and we'll take some heavy lumps. A foundation simply needs to be set before we start talking about competing. Foundation of recruits, classroom, respect, hussle, defense, graduation, etc. I believe two recruits will start the winning ways for Utah next year but even at that, winning half the games next year would be a big deal. Simply looking for improvement.

"St. Mary's is No. 1 (remind me what conference they are in)"

Then RPI isn't a very good rating as far as ranking teams is concerned since St. Mary's is only 2-1. RPI makes more sense when you get to higher sample sizes of games but at this stage there's no reason a 2-1 team that lost to Denver (albeit Denver is a pretty good team but also should not be 3rd in RPI) should be ranked higher than a 7-0 UNLV that beat UNC.

    Let's try something more realistic...
    Sagarin rankings
    WCC (10th ranked conference)
    23. St Mary's 38. Gonzaga 84. BYU 102. Loyola Marymount 124. Santa Clara 154. Portland 165. San Francisco 192. Pepperdine 263. San Diego
    Pac-12 (8th ranked conference)
    20. California 25. Stanford 53.Washington 54.Arizona 62.Oregon State 64. Oregon 135.Colorado 163.USC 164. Washington State 190. UCLA 193.Arizona State 311. Utah

Utah fans are narrow minded and believe that the only sport in the rivalry that means a bit of anything is the yippee skippee game on the grass outdoors... WEll I'm here to tell you that any fan with a brain puts as much stock into the hardwood as the cow grazing fields........ BYU has owned the Utes on the hardwood since 2009..... That is looking more and more to continue into 2012 and perhaps beyond..... That game in september means NOTHING! Nothing then and nothing now. All it means is that you could turn gifts into points.... We perhaps had foresight to your pathetic 4-5 season in your new conference which in 5 years won't mean jack diddly other than affiliation with glorious pacific institutions of higher learning such as USC, UCLA Washington STanford and maybe California... All far more prestigious than an younger institution in SLC will ever pretend to be dream as they might for better..... The game in September was a gift so that you could show your true colors of narrow minded thin sighted craziness. In 2030 the BCS won't exist and then even that argument WHO CARES! LOL Basketball redeems us!

345 D1 teams in the Sagarin rankings

    #311 Utah

DII Adams State and NAIA San Diego Christian are so far off the Sagarin radar that he doesn't even count Utah's loss to Adams State or Utah's narrow 3-point against SD Christian

The biggest difference between BYU 1996-97 and Utah 2011-12, is that while BYU's basketball team was imploding, BYU's football team was going 14-1, beating a Big 12 team in the Cotton Bowl, and finishing #5 in the country.

Meanwhile, Utah's football team finished the season 7-5, losing to one of the worst teams in the country, AT HOME, just in time for their basketball team to implode.

    Utesby3
That 1-25 season the Cougars beat a D1 school, something the Utes might not do this year. That 96-97 BYU team was a mess. They lost 11 games by more than 25, something the Utes should accomplish by mid season.

get on a winning track....hahahahaha. they couldn't get that against a junior high team. sad, very sad. oh and next time you guys have a game...you may want to put a big sign out in the front as to indicate one is going on....i say that because i drove by the last time you were supposedly having one and i couldn't tell...seriously, the parking lot was empty. yeah, you guys got a great coach...what's his name? coach k? hahahaha i bet he's embarrassed about you guys calling him coach k.

As long as your answering my comments, I see the Ute ladies defeated Weber State...question: Can the women play for the men? Now here's a real possibility for success.

Don't look but didn't your mighty cougs get spanked by USU who proceded to get spanked by Weber State and Denver? ouch

The Utes are hurting, this is for sure, but don't get all that high and mighty just yet.

Move along, nothing to see here, keep your heads up Utes!

Utah basketball will be back. This is a throw away year. Jim Boylen recruited guys who were committed to him as coach, not to the program. The Utes best player is redshirting, not to mention that we have a great incoming class. Expect things to turn around up on the Hill.

Wishful thinking about Utah being back anytime soon. What is this, like the 5th or 6th throw away year Utah has had since Majerus left?

Lets that that line of reasoning further...

Utah lost to Ashville, Ashville lost to S. Columbus, S. Columbus lost to S.E. Texas, S.E. Texas lost to College of Eastern Utah, College of Eastern Utah lost to Manti, Manti lost to 16 year old Jr. Jazz of Nephi and finally the 16 year old Jr. Jazz of Nephi lost to the eight graders at Sunset Jr. High...But keep your heads up Utes., the eight graders have a tough one against my 9 year old Sunday School class Saturday.
