DNews says, "Aside from BCS trips to the Fiesta and Sugar bowls, Utah athletics director Chris Hill acknowledged it's the best financial situation the Utes have had for a bowl game."

Not to disparage the Utes or any other college team ... but money.

With the hundred or so bowl games, that's all it's about, right?

Im still smarting from the game Saturday. Utah is almost always ready to play but Saturday they were not ready to go. Congrats to Colorado for playing their best ball.

Sill when the below quote is made, life is still good in the Pac-12
"It ended up being that we made more money this year than we would have made had we stayed in the Mountain West Conference even being a zero revenue-sharing team," Smith said.

Love the new rivalry with Colorado...there's a little bit of me that's happy they beat the Utes on Saturday just to stoke the fire. Just a little bit of course, I never wish to see the Utes lose. But this Pac 12 thing is a ton of fun already.
As for the Coug fans who are taking their not-so-clever jabs at the U for losing to CU...54-10 and 14-17 = Colorado's a lot better than the Y! So keep the CU comments coming, it just makes you look that much worse! LOL

Utah will most likely end up in the Sun bowl, which would be very cool. The Sun bowl has a very nice payout for the University, it's the only bowl game on CBS(so it gets more Pub), it's on New Years Eve and it would be against a decent opponent. Utah has never been to that bowl game either, so that's always a good thing too.

There's still a chance the Utes could go to the Holiday, or Alamo bowl as well. Which would be very, very exciting. Worst case scenario is the Vegas bowl and even that bowl would be fun to be part of. It's a good place for Utah to be in considering it's their first year in the PAC-12.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Is there any doubt who would win - a Nelson led Cougar squad or a Hayes led Ute squad?

Cougs are listed among the others receiving votes. After wins against Hawaii and the Armed Forces bowl, I'm confident they'll be listed as a Top 25 team. Meanwhile, Utes are MIA from any Top 25 lists.

Wendall Hoop "news flash, Utah is going to the Sun bowl, vs. either VA or GT most likely." "losing to Colorado sucks, but it's better than beating Idaho State, NM State and ITT Tech."

Don't count you chickens before they hatch. The pundits are wrong in picking potential bowl matchups more than they are right. After the bids come out on Sunday, we'll listen to your news flash. I'm doubtful the Utes will get picked before Washington, UCLA and Cal. All three are much bigger draws. Maybe U'll get picked before ASU.

And I'm not sure why you're so excited about a bowl game in El Paso. I lived there for three years. It's not a fun place to go for the holidays, or any time of the year for that matter. I'd rather vacation in Albuquerque than El Paso.

And no, I think I'd rather beat Idaho State and New Mexico State than lose to Colorado. Colorado would have finished in

But speaking about losing . . . how's basketball season?

  • ute4ever West Jordan, UT
    Nov. 28, 2011 11:38 a.m.

Are BYU fans here trying to make fun of Utah's bowl opportunities? Pot calling the kettle black anyone? Even the worst case scenerio for Utah this year with a mediocre season is better than BYU's bowl scenerio, no matter the season they have. We Ute fans understand, however. If your hurting, why not try to bring down your x-rival too. The Armed Forces Bowl takes the 3rd best Conference USA team....a real doorbuster.

And I've never understood BYU fans making fun of the Vegas Bowl. Do you realize you are minimizing the pinnacle of your success over the last decade?

That "one of the worst d1 teams in the nation" happened to have the number 1 rated strength of schedule in the country. Top that with a lot of injuries this year and they came off looking worse than they were.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling Colorado great.
However, they beat Utah so if one had to guess what they'd have done with BYU's schedule we'd have to assume they'd be 9-2 going into the Hawaii game.
    Rest well on that.

  • The Warrior Ute SANDY, UT

    I'm confused...

Why do all of these byu Trolls keep saying that Utah fans have been saying that they are going to the Rose Bowl? Any sane individual would know that there is no way Utah beats Stanford or Oregon. You've got to love the lies that these trolls make up.

I think most Utah fans thought with USC not elligible for post game play, that they could compete and possibley get in to the PAC12 Championship game. Sure enough Utah had a chance, but didn't realize they were playing CU not CSU last Friday.

Bye the way....UCLA will not got to a bowl game. You have to be at .500 or above and they will finish the season 6-7. Sun Bowl is where the Utes are going.

Colorado is not even in the Top 20 for SOS. Do your research before you post.

Colorado was predicted to have a tough SOS before the season started, but Hawaii, Ohio State, and some of the PAC players turned out to be weaker than expected.

But their SOS is higher than Utes, since they played USC, Oregon and Stanford. Be glad U will get to play these teams next year instead of this year, after they lose some of their key players.

Oh BTW, did I miss something? i've been led to beleive all year by Cougie fans that they were going to the National Championship game with Jake Hypes taking the Heisman. are you telling me they aren't?"

  • Thlete Draper, UT

Utes don't play Oregon and Stanford until the 2013 season. Each pair of conference misses is on a 2 year rotation for home/away. But USC is coming to SLC and they will be a Top 5 team if Barkley sticks around. Maybe top 15 if not.

I like the Utes in the Sun Bowl vs Virginia/GT this year. Considering John White will be hobbled with the high ankle sprain, I don't think a match-up against Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl is the best thing for this team right now. Next year is looking good if we can shore up the QB spot. At worst, Jon Hays will have a lot more experience and an entire off season to prepare to lead the offense with some promising young talent to back him up. Oh, and Jordan Wynn is still a gamer until his body fails him.

  • Vegas Las Vegas, NV
    Nov. 28, 2011 1:29 p.m.

I don't think the author of this article has done his homework about how expensive it is to send a team to a bowl game. Unless Utah goes to a game around Utah, they'll lose money, even with a close game where they'll sell more tickets, more likely than not they'll break even at best. A $1million payout doesn't mean you'll net a million. The book Death to the BCS outlines the difficulty teams have in making money going to bowl games. The cost related to sending the team, coaches, band, and university reps is astonishing. Pile on that the fact that the University is forced to buy thousands of tickets and unless they are going somewhere with a big fanbase, they're out most of that money. The most money being made is by those hosting the bowl game.

  • Griz Salt Lake City, UT
    Nov. 28, 2011 2:51 p.m.

Well...the Las Vegas Bowl should be fun and affordable. Utah can charter a bus from the local school district to cut down on travel costs.

Lets hope UCLA doesn't pull off an upset in the P12 title game and ends up bowl eligible too. That would force Utah down into the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

Okay...so CU's no longer rated #1 SOS but are rated #17 SOS by Sagarin Ratings through last weeks games. Sagarin is the SOS ranking that figures into the BCS computer ranking which would make it the most relevant SOS ranking you can find.
So now what changes in regard to what I said to you?
Going off of the only thing we can truly go off of - results on the field - CU would logically be 9-2 with BYU's schedule going into the game against Hawaii this week.
As you stated, CU lost to Hawaii and Hawaii is terrible (main reason CU's SOS slipped to 17).
However, those two teams played week 1 at Hawaii and when Hawaii's very talented QB (Moniz) was still healthy and playing. It could be an entirely different result if the 2 teams played this coming Saturday without Moniz.
Regardless, we'll say CU still loses that game at any point in the season and finishes 9-3.
So if BYU can get the win this Saturday we'll talk again and debate this some more if you'd like. If they lose... well then... point more than proven.

    "Really motorbike? That's your spin?"

Not my spin, just simple facts based on your own buddies' logic earlier in this thread.

    #1 Utah 54 BYU 10
    #2 CU 17 Utah 14
    #3 CU's SOS #17
    #4 Utah's SOS #40
    #5 BYU's SOS #95
#6 No other common opponents to judge by until Hawaii this Saturday.

Because BYU has such a pathetic schedule and didn't beat anyone of the three decent opponents on their schedule, one can only surmise by the above outcomes and statistics that CU would be 9-2 with BYU's schedule going into this weeks game.

Of course Lone Peak High would have a similar record against that schedule so it's really not saying much is it?

In alot of ways Vegas would be preferable to the Armed forces Bowl. It is a much easier trip for one so I'll give you that. But BYU has been to the Vegas Bowl plenty of times recently so going to a new place is more appealing this year. Ft. Worth will be fun.

I'd be pretty bummed out if I was going to El Paso but the truth is hardly any utah "fans" are going to go there anyway. You'll mostly all stay home and watch it on tv and I can't really blame you. That is a horrible destination.

Try as you might, nobody here is fooled. We all know you would have LOVED to go to the Sun Bowl over the Las Vegas, New Mexico, or Armed Forces Bowl. The Sun Bowl will most likely match the Pac-12's representative up with Ga. Tech, Virginia,...MAYBE Florida St. The Armed Forces Bowl sticks you with Tulsa or SMU. So not only does the Sun Bowl pay out over 3 TIMES that of the Armed Forces, but the OPPONENT is FAR more enticing.

Nope I would not want to go to the sun bowl, I'd rather go to any other bowl but the boise one. As far as the "enticing" matchup is concerned, well BYu has either played, or is playing, all of the teams you mentioned recently or shortly so they don't really excite me much. BYU fans are so funny!

    1) You have not beat a good team all year
    2) You would not have done any better in Pac-12 then the Utes
    3) You still are independent and STILL will continue to play terrible team.

Bag on Utah all you want about our past season but the fact still remains that you were blown out at home by your rival (54-10). You play on ESPN that nobody watches your game.

    Go Utes

  • Wally West SLC, UT
    Dec. 2, 2011 5:23 p.m.

I'll break it down for even the most simple of Byu fans.

    1) A mediocre pac 12 team has the same opportunity that a stellar MWC team does.

    2) the Utes were 2 games away from potentially going to the Rose Bowl. Strangely, the losss to CU doesn't bother me. Its the mid season hiccups v UW & Az St that IMO cost the Utes

    3) 71-26... 54-10 & 17-16
