Nice article. Losing can be a great teacher, hence "we'll bounce back."

How come the stadium wasn't full? I mean they had a shot, a reasonable shot, at the Pac-12 C-ship and Rose Bowl and they didn't sell out?

I think the Ute fans remain a very vocal minority, while the SLC media remain a very vocal majority.

Tough loss for the Utes. If the Utes would have played all season, like they did today, they would have gone 0-12. But I feel your pain, the Cougs forgot to show up for a game they had on Sept 17.

Where were all the fans? If all the Ute trolls who post comments on the BYU articles showed up at the game, RES would have been full. It's very disappointing that the Utes can't sell out a game of this magnitude, with their new rival and a shot at the conference championship game on the line. I don't know why there is talk of expanding the stadium, if U can't fill your current seats.

Come on Ute fans, support your team.

Bottom line: Interesting roller coaster ride during Utah's first year in the Pac-12. 7-5 record with a utility QB, and all-your-eggs-in-one-basket John White IV is just fine. While I am hopeful that the Utes will challenge for the Pac-12 title next year, the ultimate comfort is that Utah, no matter what ANY BYU fan/troll says, was vastly superior this year, crushing the Cougs 54-10. Any Ute fan will trade being 3 points worse than Colorado for being 44 points better than BYU!

Too much time spent reading the newspaper with rose colored glasses. This has been a disappointing year. Thank goodness Utah beat BYU because right now that seems to be all there is to cling to. That shouldn't be the case. Utah won 7 games and will get their 3rd best bowl game ever. So life goes on for football.

I call on all Utah fans to support basketball. It was really sad to see empty seats at RES for these last two critical football games.

A bigger ugly is all the empty seats at Hunstman. True story. Just this morning I overheard a strong Utah fan, posters on the wall, etc, throwing the basketball team under the bus. He is not going to watch basketball games. "Just can't get into it". If he was not my boss, I would have vocally suggested that he remove the posters.

Delusional, envious cougar fans, the game was a SELLOUT today. The only seats that weren't filled were some of the MUSS seats where the students sit. In case you haven't heard, it's Thanksgiving break (students go home for Thanksgiving).

Speaking of attendance, LES is showing a few thousand empty seats each game.... What's up with that? Maybe fill your seats before worrying about ours?

Funny that you shift your focus to attendance! Big brother beats you by 44 on your field after all the trash talking leading up to September 17th, gets invited to a BCS conference all while you get to play Idaho State and the bottom half of the WAC.

I love how anxious little brothers are to jump on the first few comments of a Ute article.
And to those comments and the remarks about attendance; I was at the game and it was the MUSS that was lacking yesterday. The rest of the stadium was full. Completely understandable being that it was Thanksgiving holiday the day before. A lot of students who head home for the holiday didn't have enough time to get back in town for a 1:30 PM kickoff.
What was the Cougars excuse for being 10,000 short of capacity last week?
Moving on, Utah found a new rival yesterday...a 47 point stronger rival. That will only add to the irrelevance of the team down south as Utah turns their attention to better, stronger opponents.
Go Utes, the future is bright.

Hold on a minute while I pick myself up from laughing. Better and sttonger rival? Really? Colorado is ranked 114 out of 119 teams in the nation. If thats your idea of better and stronger your right, that is the perfect level of competition for the bottom dweller Utes. May the Ute and Buffalo rivalry rein for many years to come as the two worst teams battle it out for the bottom of the mighty Pac 12.!

I would LOVE to see a match-up with TCU in a bowl game. And I don't buy the "Thanksgiving Holiday" excuse for the empty seats. UofU is a commuter school -- low percentage of students are leaving the area for the holiday. Looks like it might just take some time for u fans to start hating (or even caring about) the new rival. I tried to get tickets, it was sold out, thats all there is to it. The fact that we beat bYu does not make this a good or bad season. But when bYu fans try to say how bad our team is, we must remind you of the beating we gave you. Call it luck, try and mock our losses, but at the end of the day, head to head, 54-10! When one team is so clearly superior to the other, the band of little brothers at times must be reminded. Talk is easy, scoreboard settles it all.

  • davidutefan Evanston, WY

you can't go to a game if you can't get a ticket. That SE corner of the stadium has empty seats all year bought by people that don't show up but, the U can't resell tickets. I knew at least 6 people that wanted to go and couldn't get one. Maybe we could start a board for fans that can't make it to give away/sell unused tickets? I don't know the answer.nd by the way mokohat: at least Utah play a real scheduled not, 8 or 9 horrible bottom of the WAC teams.

I love how they announce the "sellout" but in fact seveal thousand seats are empty. It was the same for the last home game and several of the others. What that tells us is that many of the tickets are sold to people that only want one game for whatever reason, just buy the tickets to have them but aren't really fans at all, the utah "fan"base is tenuous and filled with bandwagon and frotnrunner types.

Also every single article about this game has tried to blame the loss in part on the injuries. Injuries are unfortunate and no one likes to see them happen to a young man, but the utes were being shut out and dominated when those 3 players were playing. It was only after they were all out of the game that utah even got anything going. The injuries had no effect on this game, if anything utah improved after they happened. The truth is utah just got beaten by a better team.

"Utah play a real scheduled not, 8 or 9 horrible bottom of the WAC teams"

    Typical Ute fan exaggeration.

BYU played/will play 5 WAC teams this year, including instate rival Utah State and Hawaii, a team that destroyed Colorado 34-17, you know, the 114th rated Buffs that just finished dominating the Utes at home.

Utah hasn't beaten a single PAC 12 that will finish the season with a winning record.

One thing i love about the Ute, They usually do not blow their own horn. But all week even from K Whit was we have a chance to win the South. Instead of we need to best UC then we will worry about the rest. From watching the Pac 12 this year i can tell you one thing. It's like the old WAC, Offense, offense, and more offense. You can not win in this league with a D2 QB sorry. JH does the best he can, but it is not good enough in the Pac 12.

  • A1994 Centerville, UT
    Nov. 26, 2011 11:08 a.m.

54-10 was an epic failure by BYU. But this game was just as bad and maybe even worse. Colorado hasn't won a road game since 2007. They haven't even had a winning season in 4 years. There's no way to sugar coat this. This loss defies logic and explanation. You can try to make the argument that there is just so much parity in the PAC 12 that this is bound to happen. But that's not the case with Colorado. They are a truly awful team...except for 60 minutes yesterday.

  • atl134 Salt Lake City, UT

    @Veracity
"If you get beat at home by the Bottom Dweller, where does that rank you?"

If you don't take the entire slate of games into context... we went 4-5 and would have gone 4-7 if we played all 11 PAC-12 teams. That probably leaves utah somewhere around 9th of the 12 teams. It's curious that BYU fans want to say that losing to a worse team automatically makes you worse than them to insist Utah is terrible, and then dismiss BYU being beaten by Utah. Apparently 54-10 is a fluke while 14-17 isn't. How curious... perhaps both are outlier situations and the outcome that happens most of the time is a narrow Utah win against BYU and a Utah win against Colorado.

    Duckhunter said

"the injuries had no effect (affect) on this game" lol

Yeah I bet John White would not have come alive in the 4th Quarter as always and given the Utes more security in the run. Just would not have happened (according to Ducky). The second leading rusher in the PAC 12 leaves a game, there is bound to be a drop off.

That being said, the Utes should have won this anyway. No excuses.

    Joe Schmoe writes:
"To all the clowns hanging on to 54-10, you are now going to hear 17-14."

Here's the thing. Utah beat us by 44 points. Let's put that into perspective. Forty-four points...IN PROVO. That is MORE THAN TWO TOUCHDOWNS better than Scott Mitchell's 57-28 thrashing of BYU in Provo (1988), which was itself a sound, 4-touchdown/29-point margin. But a 44 point margin? That is MORE THAN A 6-TOUCHDOWN margin of victory. BYU couldn't beat Lone Peak High on that day.

We can't erase that just by saying "17-14." Look at what Colorado had to play for. Their first road win in 3 years...and avoiding utter ridicule. Colorado had a lot to play for. I do not know that BYU could have matched Colorado last night, had BYU been in the PAC12. There is nothing un-respectable to Utah losing to Colorado, just as there is nothing un-respectable to USU losing to a sloppy BYU team that had been beaten by Utah by more than six (6) touchdowns.

If we start saying "gee, you lost to Colorado 17-14," we just look silly.

One game can be considered an anomaly.

A whole season establishes how good a team really is.

Utah fans have been citing Sagarin ratings the entire season to prove how much better Utah's schedule was than BYU's.

So are Utah fans now prepared to accept the inevitable, that when the Sagarin ratings are posted Monday and BYU is rated ahead of Utah, that BYU proved over the course of the entire season that the Cougars are a better football team than the Utes?

If you still want to argue that one head-to-head game establishes which team is better, then you must be prepared to accept the fact that a 3-10 team that hadn't won a road game in four years is better than the Utes. It wasn't a fluke win because Colorado completely dominated U the entire 1st half.

"One game can be considered an anomaly."

BYU lost by 44. That is one heck of an anomaly. Or maybe there's another reason.

"So are Utah fans now prepared to accept the inevitable, that when the Sagarin ratings are posted Monday and BYU is rated ahead of Utah, that BYU proved over the course of the entire season that the Cougars are a better football team than the Utes?"

That's not actually known yet. Utah was 31st the last one while BYU was in the 40s. Utah might still be ahead. Either way I think it'll be close between the two. Whether Utah is 44th and BYU 46th or vice versa it's essentially tied. I think the two teams are very similar to each other in skill anyway.

But here's the little detail you BYU fans are forgetting... we used Wynn to pound BYU. We used Wynn against USC when we almost took it to overtime. We didn't have Wynn the last 8 games. Utah was a superior team when facing BYU because it had Wynn. So yes, BYU is just as good as Utah... because our starting quarterback missed 2/3 of the season.

For not making any excuses it sure sounds like you're making excuses. Considering vakapuna easily gained as many yards in the 2nd half (77) as you could have reasonably expected white to gain I would say it is pretty obvious it made little to no difference. You just got beaten by a better team despite your non excuse excuse.

True, but as of today after 11 games you still have NOT won a game against team with a winning record. That fact is not an anomaly.

I only saw the first half and Colorado was the better team.

I don't think Utah's shellacking of BYU was an anomaly, perhaps the score would have been different had BYU not turned it over so much, but Utah was still the better team on that day and for the next 300 days, give or take, Utah is the better team and definitley have the edge as far as recent football program supremacy.

I refuse to think that BYU is better than Utah in football, as that is a complete sense of false security.

For Utah fans, the loss to Colorado was puzzling as you had a lot to play for and, quite frankly, your team and coaches let you down. There is no excuse for losing to Colorado.

For BYU fans, of which I am, I want BYU football to get better on the field.

I don't want hype, I want results. I don't want excuses. I want BYU football to quit making stupid turnovers at critical times in big games, as we have seen year after year after year.

To all you BYU fans, fantastic job of jumping on the band-wagon as soon as the Utes lost . I have read your comments for a number of weeks now and it is now apparent to me that none of you have a clue about college football. Colorado was just like all the other PAC-12 teams that came into RES, they had great athletes. The players in the PAC-12 are far superior to those of the WAC until you play in a big boy conference you will never know what the difference is. I hated to see the Utes go down like they did to Colorado but I do know that it has taken the team, the coaches, the fans, this new league that we are in we can no longer just walk out on the field and expect to win. Something you Y fans have been able to do, the Idaho teams, NMS, SJS, USU, don't even come close to what the Utes saw. I'm not a BYU bandwagon Ute hater, I'm here most days for you win or lose. I'm just a non-believer in the Ute Pac 10.2 Championship and Rose Bowl cheer club.

If you're happy about being 4-5 in your conference, get used to it. I've been a believer in the Utes being in the Pac all along. I thought they were ready for tougher competition but it appears they are not a conference championship quality team. Don't get me wrong, I never believed a mostly perennial 2nd or 3rd place team in the WAC or MWC would do any better in the Pac.

The deck was stacked in their favor this year with USC being sanctioned and the cross-over division games with weaker opponents. And with Colorado being the final game who would have imagined the Utes being embarrassed by the Buffs?

Well it happened, just like BYU giving up 7 turnovers and giving a 44 point win to the Utes.

Tell me what's going to happen when the sanctions are lifted from USC and the Utes have to play Oregon and Stanford?

Enjoy the ribbing, after all, it is just a rivalry.

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Nov. 27, 2011 12:37 p.m.

But of course the funniest part of the utah "fans" comments on here is how they claim colorado, indisputably the worst team in the pac12, is now loaded with talent and athletes because they are a pac12 team and pac 12 teams are all loaded with talent and athletes simply by virtue of being in the pac12.

Now the pac12 is at best the 3rd or 4th best league and utah just lost to the worst team in the 3rd or 4th best league and barely lucked into a win in o.t. to the next worst team the previous week. But all we have heard from these same utah "fans" since the 1st week of the season is how BYU's win over Ole Miss is of no consequence because Ole Miss is the worst team in the SEC, which by the way is the BEST football league in the nation and rather than LOSING to that team AT HOME, BYU actually WON on the ROAD against the worst team in the BEST conference.

So shouldn't the worst team in the best conference also be loaded with athletes and talent?

    LOL!

  • Duckhunter Highland, UT
    Nov. 27, 2011 12:47 p.m.

So what's better? Is it losing, AT HOME, to the worst team in the 3rd best league or is it beating, ON THE ROAD, the worst team in the very best league? I'm pretty sure I know which one is better but I can't wait to hear the tortured logic of the utah "fans" telling us why beating ole miss is somehow worse than losing to a powerhouse pac12 team like colorado.

But if we follow this logically then we have to conclude that if BYU's win over Ole Miss, while better than utah's loss to cu, is still worthless, meaningless, inconsequential, etc. then we also have toc conclude that utah's loss to cu is probably the most humiliating, embarrassing, inexusable, loss any team from this state has suffered this year.

Or is it that the worst team in the 3rd best league really is loaded with talent and athletes while the worst team in the best league doesn't have any athletes or any talent?

So that is was you are reduced to? utah "fans" are now claiming the accomplishments of the teams in the pac12 that are their obvious betters? I suppose that will be the norm from here on out. utah will finish 4-5 and then claim some sort of accomplishment because the teams that beat them during the year did something. Just more proof that utah is no more than a hanger on, a follower, a program that needs better programs to prop them up and give them something to claim as their own.

As for Ute fan "reduction" . . . It's okay if I support my team, right? For now, I'm cool with:

    1. Utah's recent history of winning the most of their bowl games.
    2. Experiencing a schedule, against better talent, where mistakes matter.
    3. Trips to BCS Bowls, albeit only twice this century.
    4. A coaching staff of excellent talent, effort and drive.
    5. Takings risks while playing for something worthwhile.

Keep dogging the Utes, it makes for interesting reading, humor, and in some small way an ego boost.

Well if what utah has done is enough then why are you laying claims to the accomplishments of your betters?

Utah has absolutley nothing to do with the records of Stanford or OU. They didn't even get the honor of losing to them. They did manage to lose to USC so I guess you can get some credit for USC's accomplishments.

My advice is for you to get used to "being cool" with what those schools do and laying claim to them as if they are utah's accomplishments because refracted 'glory' from being in the same conference as some teams that are actually good is about all you are ever going to have to lay claim to.
