There's a history for Hawaii playing over their heads when facing BYU at home.
Cougar jet lag, Island humidity, and Pele anger over all the quality Polynesian
players that opt for BYU can motivate Hawaii to play its best game of the year.
BYU needs to take this game very seriously and not get behind in the first half.
cougs need to use the bye-week preparing for all of the intangibles going into
the Hawaii game. I think it would help the Cougs a lot to go a few days earlier
and get the trip to paradise distractions out of their system and game prep hard
on Thursday and Friday going into game day.
Hawaii game will be fun. Unfortunately the other recent games have been
yawners. Glad to get this first year of independence in the past. We need some
more quality games and wins or it won't matter how much we are on tv. Let's
take care of business and look to the future and better quality teams.
Another bye? Were mighty BCS quality foes like Salt Lake Community College and
Snow College busy this weekend?
"We're not satisfied. Nor will we be satisfied after the bowl game,"
said linebacker Kyle Van NoyI think Kyle speaks for many BYU fans
too. This season has felt so strange and empty compared to seasons past. I have
to hand it to the coaching staff if they can somehow keep the players motivated
and improving because from a fan's perspective I am more excited for the Spring
game then the rest of this season's schedule. They should open up a few
practices over the next couple of weeks just so fans could see some actual
competition. Oh, the joys of independence!
If Bronco is happy and pleased with the last few games then why not join their
conference and be king every year. There were some fantastic games the last
couple of weekends with top teams playing each other and a lot on the line for
each team. BYU was not in one of those games and never will be again so as a
fan I might as well move on. I did not even bother to stay up and watch on
@flatlander: "BYU was not in one of those games and never will be again so
as a fan I might as well move on. I did not even bother to stay up and watch on
Saturday." Not really what I would call a fan. Good luck with your new
"Our team continues to improve" seriously, against PEE WEE Football
A 2nd bye week? What an interesting schedule! Bye weeks before 2 of your most
difficult games: Idaho and Hawaii.Hawaii is not any good. I
watched them play SJSU earlier this year and there are no real threats on either
side of the ball. If you are expressing concern about the difficulty of this
game you are either doing this for 1 of 3 reasons:1 - To kid
yourself into thinking there is anything left to play for;2 - You really
are concerned;3 - Coach speakIf you answered 1, 2, or 1 &
2, then the BYU program is worse off than you thought.
Nothing like a bye during rivalry week / Thanksgiving weekend to drive home how
empty Independence is. On the bright side, the Bronco poll has the
Cougs ranked in the top 25 this week.
"After demolishing a pair of Western Athletic Conference opponents by a
combined total of 84-14 in back-to-back games, BYU heads into another bye
week." Interesting statement on two accounts: (1) A collective 84-14
scoring total over what level of opponents? Nothing said about this is the
precise type of scoring that was expected against the level of competition we
played; (2) WAC opponents. Enough said there. Certainly glad we're winning, but
it's also ridiculous to have a bye the 2nd to last week of the season. BTW- Just
spoke w/ my Cougs freshman son, and he said the feeling to his fingers has
finally come back from Sat. night's game! I love my Cougs but would like to read
a little more balanced, constructive criticism feedback about the program. I
obviously realize such will likely never occur (I understand who owns the school
and DN), but I can always wish.
I am growing increasingly weary of so many fair weather fans. Get real folks,
could any of YOU have pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat in YEAR ONE of
independence? Give it a rest already.
Once Moniz (Hawaii QB) broke his leg, the Warriors became just another WAC team.
This should be another easy win for the Cougs, but never overlook your
opponent. Just ask Oklahoma State or Oklahoma what happens if you look beyond
next Saturday. For the fans complaining about the November schedule,
we knew the first two years of Indy would be like this. But hold on for
December 30. It looks like the Cougs will get a pretty good C-USA opponent with
either SMU or Tulsa. It should be a much better game than last year's bowl, and
will likely be the fourth best team we face this year.I loved seeing
Marshall run for a TD and Edwards catch a TD pass. On their last game at LES,
we could not have scripted a better highlight for these two outgoing seniors.
Rikitikitavi - OK, How does Year 2 or Year 3 of Independence look as far as
Duckhunter hunter:Are you implying that BYU should not be concerned
with Hawaii? That they should overlook them? hmm...Additionally, I
wonder if you have ever played competitive sports when you think suggest that
BYU has nothing left to play for. You play to win, that should be enough. The utes have cu, who are arguably worse than Hawaii. Let's hope for
your sake that the utes are "concerned" with them
I think the players have high motivation going into this bye week. They have a
family Holiday coming up with some down time to rest up and then an exciting
game in the islands the first of December. A bowl appearance follows and I
believe the Cougs will play very well the final two games of the year. As a fan
I am much more excited to watch the next two games than I was to watch the
Remember when ute fans said that they were leaving BYU in their rearview mirrors
now that they are in the PAC-10? When exactly does that kick in? I look forward
The schedule hasn't been to BYU's advantage but for their first year of
independence they had to make due with what came their way. They have beaten
those opponents from the WAC the way they should have and they competed in the
other games that not too many people thought they would win. Yes the Utah loss
was really bad but for the most part BYU has played well this year. Look at
some of the games they have coming next year though. Boise, Notre Dame, Texas,
Utah who will be a lot better next year again, Oregon State who will be better
and they will most likely put TCU on the schedule again. Stop hating on the
Cougars because of who they are playing. It is part of the Independence
process. At least they are doing what they should be doing against those teams.
BYU should have no problems with Hawaii this year. I think they are down to
their 3rd string QB, and this is the weakest they have looked in years. USU
rallied and beat them on the islands with their backup, I watched it on tv with
my dad who is a big Aggie fan, so yeah now that BYU is playing better, and Heaps
is finding a rhythm with his receivers, there should be no problems. Now on to bigger things. I heard Craig Bolerjack say that BYU was basically
invited into the Big 12 but started making a lot of demands (the Sunday deal
wasn't the hangup) and the Big 12 just stopped talking with them. Now the board is deciding whether to join the Big East. The church or BYU is
not hurting for money, if the reports are true, BYU should have accepted the
deal with the Big 12 and should accept the Big East deal now.If they
don't, and keep the same 8 green-light games a year independent schedule, they
will lose any respect and the recruiting will suffer. Take the deal--it worked
out for the Jeffersons!
I confess I come away from this season disappointed. It's not the schedule, I
think the BYU fans understand the challenges there. It's the fact that in the
4 biggest games of the year (one of which we won - at Ole Miss), we made soooo
many mistakes, both offensively and defensively. And in the Utah game, we
just did not show up. It was embarassing. The coaching staff has to improve,
they have to figure out how to get the team ready for the big games. I dislike
the Utes intensely, but give Whit credit that he tends to come up big in the
important games. Bronco and staff should learn.
UU32"Nothing like a bye during rivalry week..."Unlike Utah fans, at least BYU fans won't have to sit in the snow for four
hours during their rivalry week bye.
UU32"How does Year 2 or Year 3 of Independence look as far as
November scheduling?" Since the schedulea haven't been released
yet, nobody knows for sure, but it's likely BYU will be playing Boise State to
end the season every year for the next 12 years.Boise State >
Colorado (it's not even close)
"BYU will be playing Boise State to end the season every year for the next
12 years."The next 12 years? Where is this being reported?PAC-12 > Big Least
BYU is doing all it can - really. All of you fans who expect to see Michigan or
Miami playing in Provo any time soon better return to reality. BCS conference
teams usually schedule cup cakes for their non conf games or schedule against
other BCS conferences where they have something to gain by winning. BYU isn't a
cup cake and they aren't a BCS conference team so why play them?? Nothing to
gain for most teams. To upgrade the schedule BYU is going to have to do so as
road games and not home games. Expect more Idaho's etc.. for home games. The
fact that sunday play was a factor for BYU not getting a serious look by the BIG
12 pretty much locks the Y out of any BCS conference so if I were betting I
would expect the coming years to look pretty much like this year schedule wise.
Not a pretty picture - especially as recruiting falls off as it most likely will
over the next several years.
Thanks for playing, trolls! Now some of you under the bridge gang
make yourselves useful. BYU fans have known where we would be playing since we
bit six wins. Where will the Utes be playing, top to bottom what are your bowl
options?I really WOULD like to see your team play for the roses.
But I'd like to see some of YOU head to Las Vegas. And have ticket snafus.
Couldn't happen to a more humble, worthy bunch of dorks.
For the trolls who continue to bash BYU schedule, the first year of Indy is what
it is. By the way, their last two games they won by a combined score of 84 to
14. THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSSED TO DO. Period. And to the trolls, Colorado,
Washington State, Arizona, bragging that they may sneak into the Pac 10
championship game because USC is on probation, and we don't have to play
Stanford or Oregon, is comical. I hope anyone but the UTES are in the Pac 10
championship game.......because honestly folks, it will be an embarrassment. You
know...I used to cheer hard for all of our Utah schools, but Ute fans, you make
it hard to root for you. And for you Ute fans that will tell me that all of you
aren't like this....Sorry, one bad apple spoils the whole darn bunch. Same for
Cougar nation. All of you are Band of Little Brothers.
"Where will the Utes be playing, top to bottom what are your bowl
options?"All of the options are superior to BYU's invitation.
Duckhunter HunterPretty sure not or you would have answered the
question. It was sincere, you owe me an honest answer. Because the
Vegas bowl is not a better option than anything. We have years and years of
Utes who told us so.
Y Grad / Y Dad -- Options now are:Rose Bowl (complete longshot - but
fun to dream)Alamo Bowl -- only if Oregon to Rose and Stanford to another
BCS gameHoliday Bowl -- good chanceSun Bowl -- also good chanceLess likely - Vegas Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl
Duckhunter Hunter"Where will the Utes be playing, top to bottom what
are your bowl options? All of the options are superior to BYU's
invitation."It depends on how you define superior. If U define superior as how much money each school will make from their bowl
appearance - BYU wins hands down since U get zero this year. Even in future
years, we don't split our bowl money with 12 other teams. We keep 100%.If you define superior as the destination city, 99.9% of Americans would
prefer to spend a few days during the holidays in Dallas than in El Paso (the
Sun Bowl looks like the most likely option for U at this point). Please tell us your definition of superior, because I think BYU's bowl options
Until BYU beats someone with a winning record and is not embarrassed by the Utes
then they have accomplished nothing. I no longer get excited about beating a
bunch of nobodies.
@ cougfanintxOk so you get to keep all your bowl money from the
Armed Forces bowl? What does that pay 1 mil? the PAC splits 12 way with 2 BCS
bowls (Oregon & Stanford) which equals 34 mil... Divide that by 12. Then we
divide the money from the other 5 bowls the PAC gets... And all of 5 of them pay
more than the AF bowl. So the money Utah gets from the 2 PAC BCS invites far
exceeds the money BYU gets from their bowl...That is not even including the
other 5 bowl games the PAC gets. I think Utah's bowl options are superior...
UU32Thanks for a straight answer!I do wish the ute team
well. For some of the ute fans, those last three would be tough to swallow,
liberally seasoned as any one of them would be with their own words.
For you BYU fans that are giving up now, don't bother to renounce your fandom.
You never were fans. A real fan stays through the good times and the bad times.
If a six year history of winning seasons, most of them double-digit wins,is not
enough to carry you through a bad year, you have no loyalty. As we see with
Texas, Ohio State, Florida and Florida State, no program stays up for ever -
they all have their ups and downs. Furthermore, everybody knew going into the
season what the schedule was going to be. It is not easy to get a great,
challenging schedule with only a few months warning. However, those
of you who are bailing out because of growing pains, that's fine. It will make
it easier for the rest of us to get better seats in our season ticket packages.
Duckhunter Huntersince when did the Sun or Alamo Bowl become the end
all of bowl games? And playing the Buffs is basically a bye week. Any peewee
team could beat them. the ONLY reason the Utesies have a winning record is
because the latter part of their schedule is right up cupcake alley. the Pac has
2 maybe 3 legit teams. Stanford, USC and Oregon in that order, the rest are
mediocre to pathetic.
