It would be interesting to play Utah now with Heaps and special teams vastly
improved. Obviously both teams are playing the bottom of their schedule so they
have improved scores and some wins. I just don't think 54-10 would be the
outcome now. Heaps actually looked like he had some intensity and
field vision last night with some great passes (first I've seen it).
Thanks for the memories seniors!Im going to bite my tongue and not
mention the 54 - 10 memory.Actually a great bunch of guys that when
they signed, had no idea the path their AD would lead their team down.Hang in there Band of Lil Brothers
It is interesting to note that other than the standard AP stories on USC and
Baylor, nothing has been posted relative to the absolute confusion that the BCS
has been plunged into. The BCS system is likely facing its greatest crisis and
it isn't a result of a mid-major program going undefeated against mediocre to
poor competition, but of rising second tier BCS conference programs. Baylor, Iowa State, NC State, and USC have now done their part. Arkansas
could finish it off on Friday with an upset of LSU. The BCS was always set up
to benefit the traditional powers not conferences, but conferences are proving
stronger than the BCS. LSU has clearly been the best team in the country to
date and they deserve their ranking, but what happens if Arkansas beats them in
Baton Rouge? Who should play for the mythical national championship? 6 to 7
teams have an argument and the conferences will be pitted against each other.
I can't help but think that if BYU was 10-1 right now that the Utah
papers would be all over this and clamoring for action.
It's great to see BYU's leadership once again pounce on a Pee Wee Football
Team. One day you want your Independence and the next day you want
back into a weaker conference (Big East) than you just left. Amazing!
How wonderful that these two seniors were able to shine for the first time.
Terrific send off for all the seniors. The Aggies from New Mexico State appeared
to be ready with some impressive plays that moved them down field in the first
quarter. Wow the Cougars could be in for a game. However, mediocrity
set in with the Aggies play book and the Cougar defense throttled up and brought
the proverbial " Wood " yes it was lights out.Heaps was
able to tie the average point spread that Aggie opponent's score against them.
You do need to subtract out the 7 points that New Mexico State scored which puts
the Cougars right at 35 points. So good game the Cougars hit most of
the pre-objectives and polished up the BYU 2011 season to 8-3 and with a win in
Hawaii, cross your fingers, a 9-3 season is respectable. Aloha
Who is the Y going to play next week? Westminster?
New Mexico State.... remind me, which school district are they in again? It looks like a yawner, an empty comment board and an empty stadium.
Just wait, we will all see how many people say "Jake Heaps has found his
game, he is Heisman material after the last 2 games in a row."How predictable.
East Coast Coug. Heaps does show intensity against high school
competition. BYU would still lose but it might be closer. Heaps panics under
pressure. The teams that pressured heaps allowed him to make bad decisions. The
tough defenses hurt BYU. The princess defenses make BYU look terrific. Look at
While I think in some ways the change was needed to go to Nelson to fire up the
Cougs a bit, in the end against subpar competition, Nelson is no better/worse
than Heaps. Now the Cougs have a real dilemma especially when it comes to the
bowl game and next year.
eastcoastcoug,They haven't improved, they are just playing a cupcake
football team.I expect any QB at D1 level to play better against New
MExico St. and Idaho...You can only measure how good a team has
become by worthy competition.
The local yocals from such international locations such as Sandy are the first
to mention BYU and the last to mention that their team is squeaking by the
PAC-12 left overs. The utes joined the PAC-12 so they could be assured of
playing their bowl game in Las Vegas, something they couldn't do in the MWC.
Gosh these seniors sure are neat.
Ute fans, thanks for watching and caring. Your team barely beat a team that has
been as bad or worse than NMS for the last few years. There are probably some
high school teams in Washington that could beat both the Utes and WSU.
Hey Utes, how about you go troll your own articles, heralding a 3 point OT win
over a sub .500 bottom dweller, and let us honor our seniors. You can use the
time you save to get geeked up for next week's great contest with Colorado.
Here's hoping you can dispatch them in regulation.
@Bleedred 6:31 you have a touch of class. Thanks
Funny stuff from Ute trolls, especially since they needed overtime to beat WSU,
a perrenial bottom feeder. They will be Utah's new rivals---because they're
COUGARS! Ha-ha-ha.....enjoy BBall season!
7 of 8 wins are against teams that cannot become bowl eligible because they
won't win 6 games. The 3 losses are to teams that are already bowl eligible.
Hmmmmmmmm. Impressive. NOT!!!!!!!
LVCoug,I can comment whichever article I feel like.Don't
be bashin Washington St. of the PAC when your team played New Mexico St. of who
knows what conference.
Watching Heaps has been frustrating this season. I've always felt that he was
the better choice (between he and Nelson) because of the upside, but I have to
admit that I'm now starting to wonder. There are two reasons:1. Nelson
brings out the best in his teammates. When he is at the helm everyone elevates
their game. I don't know if this is because he is a more natural leader, has
more experience, or if it's just a fluke... but receivers don't drop his passes
and everyone plays with a little more passion. Advantage: Nelson.2. Heaps
throws too many bullets. It's true that he has amazing arm strength, and when
he is comfortable (playing lesser defenses) he is pretty accurate. However, I
now believe the arm strength is actually a detriment. He is hitting his
targets, but because he's putting so much on the throws the receivers rarely can
catch them in stride and get significant yards after catch. So, instead of
great slants going for 20-30 yards they usually stop at 5-10. Nelson doesn't
have a great arm but he gives his teammates opportunities to make plays.
An 8-3 record is normally an indication of a pretty good year... but when your
wins are against teams like New Mexico St, San Jose State, Idaho, Idaho St. and
you get blown out but Utah and TCU I think you have to realistically consider
that with only one quality win all year (Ole Miss) you probably don't deserve a
bowl game - even a minor bowl like the Armed Forces bowl. I think there probably
needs to be some sort of power ranking to go with number of wins - to qualify
for a bowl game otherwise going to a bowl game means little.
@patriotthank you oh wise one. I nominate you to determine all teams that
deserve to go to a college bowl. Please, also nominate which basketball teams
should be regulated out of the NCAA and into NAIA (I think coach K would be
above .500 with that competition.)
They should have honored Heaps with the seniors. That is the last game he'll
ever play for BYU in Provo. He's been treated so horribly by the coaching
@roberto"@Bleedred 6:31 you have a touch of class.
Mendenhall has a losing record against winning teams. Doman would have a hard
time coaching at the high school level and Heaps has shown Great skill against
nothing teams from nothing schools. Utah humiliated them and has gone on to
keep winning. Utah State would have been another loss had Heaps not been
pulled. TCU owns them. As long as Bronco surrounds himself with yes men BYU
will slip further into irrelevance. Pack Heaps in his Prius and send him to the
tennis team; send Doman to coaching school and tell Bronco to talk about
something besides winning against junior colleges. It isn't fun to watch them
walk all over little schools when schools of equal size destroy them--and let's
not even talk about what Boise State would do to them. Did anyone catch USC and
Oregon? Do you even think BYU could play to that level of competition? Not
with the current staff.
EastCoastCoug - wins over below average teams from below average conferences
don't mean much. Focus on congratulating your seniors for what they gave your
program and not 'what if' based on beating a lot of soft team.
Yes, there are too many Ute fans on here unnecessarily insulting the BYU
football program. But before you Y fans get too irate or start posting about
some U fans' obsession with all things BYU, please note the following:1. The first post on this board was from eastcoastcoug suggesting the Y may
be better than the U despite the 44 point drubbing a couple months ago - I
thought you all moved past that game.. 2. Some U fans' obsession
with all thins BYU seems to be equally matched by some Y fans' obsession with
all things Ute. Don't believe me, check out the large number of Y fans on the U
boards (and here) insulting the Utes' SOS.3. Any Y fan bashing the
Utes' SOS is really pathetic. If you really believe the bottom teams in the
PAC-12 are no better than the bottom teams of the WAC or the MWC, you really
need to reconsider your competence to comment on college football.4.
Yes, the U currently has a terrible, although rebuilding, bball program. But
to bring up bball on football boards is just sad and demonstrates BYU fans'
desperate need to save face.
Did some people forget to read the story. It is not about Bronco or the Coaching
staff it is about a Cougar win on senior night. Enough said!!
What a great moment for those Byu Seniors that got more playing time than usual.
Gotta be an incredible feeling going into the game knowing its going to be
completely uncompetitive. All final games of the season should be scheduled with
NOTHING on the line. Empty the benches, everyone gets to play.Everyone gets an
orange slice and a snickers bar at halftime. Then get your senior snuggy and a
hug from Roscoe. Kinda reminds me of a jr.jazz game. I gotta stop now cause im
getting all misty eyed!
Byu is beating the worst teams in the wac, which is the worst fbs conference.
Utah is beating the worst teams in the Pac, which is one of the best conferences
in the country. Big difference.
Old miss won one game this year and you beat them by 1 point. Is that a quality
hrs4"He's been treated so horribly by the coaching staff."
You keep posting this hoping if you state it enough, people will believe you.
But you cannot actually give any specific examples.I have challenged
you to do this numerous times and each time you could not.
@Wolf 2:42You said, "Any Y fan bashing the Utes SOS is really
pathetic."In other words, Ute fans can dish it out but they
can't take it, right? What happen to the Ute team that was going to
roll evryone this year, just like you did Alabama in 2008?Is the Ute
football team still planning to hang a National Championship banner up this
year, just as all their fans predicted they would, again and again and again
during the off season?"Mark it Down!" Ute fans kept
saying."Write it down!"Okay, we did mark it
down. Now, because of your losses this year, you expect everyone to shut their
mouth while you continue to hit your BYU pinata? Sorry Ute fans. If
you talk the talk, you better walk the walk. And if you can't take it, don't
dish it out.
ClarkHippo,The same should be said to BYU. I remember such things
as..."BYU will dominate the U this year because the Y has so
many returning starters and one of the best O lines in the country. We have an
elite 11 quarterback that started to develop and get really good after last
year. Be ready for a smackdown."Oh, and don't forget "The
Quest for Perfection".Seriously? BYU is the most over-hyped
team in the nation. Nothing but talk from fans and players. The Utes quietly go
about their seasons doing their talking on the field.BYU is on their
way to their 26th pre-season National Championship around June.Come
next summer, we will hear so much about how great this BYU team will be.So, may I kindly tell you what you tell all Ute fans?If you
talk the talk, you better walk the walk. And if you can't take it, don't dish it
Washington State would roll over BYU.
@ClarkHippoWrong, my comment had nothing to do with not being able
to take criticism. I welcome well-thought-out and reasoned criticism. What I
find pathetic is the specific type of criticism I identified. If a BYU fan
wants to point out that the Utes have not beaten any top ten teams this year,
that's fine. I agree. But what many BYU fans are doing is trying to argue that
BYU's wins this year are equal to Utah's wins - or are not significantly
different. That is a pathetic argument. Not because they are offering
criticism, but because anyone who has a basic grasp of the qualitative
difference between the various college football programs knows that the argument
is stunningly ridiculous. Also, I never heard any Ute fans talking
about a national championship this year. (I am not saying there were not any -
every fan base has some juvenile posters that make stupid comments). But no one
in a significant position in the Ute program made such bold predictions. The
closest someone came to declaring a possible NC this year was the BYU head
coach. Perhaps you have mistaken him for an ill-informed Ute fan.
Nice game cogs. Good luck to these seniors. As for Jake great job, keep tearing
it up, I have said it along that you should have been in there. I hope you tear
it up, help get the WINS for your team, have all these band wagon jumpers who
called for your head, get all excited and warm inside and realize how good you
are, just in time to lower the boom and say good bye BYU. I don't
blame you at all.
1. Congrats to these seniors who have probably worked hard without any acclaim
for four years and got to enjoy scoring touchdowns in their last home game. It
was a nice touch by Doman to design plays for them.2. For the
posters comparing PAC-12 cellar dweller WSU with Division 1 cellar dweller NMSU,
give me a break. It is true that WSU is a bottom feeder in the PAC-12. But
they would probably have finished in third place in the MWC this year. And they
are MUCH better than NMSU, Idaho, Idaho State, etc. They beat Idaho State 64-21
(similar to the beatdown BYU gave the vandals). They beat UNLV 59-7.
The Utah game was a blow-out, the TCU game was a loss. 10'poings is not a blow
out, though a loss when you make so many errors still hurts. I think
we have established that Utah is better than BYU this year, thanks for all the
reminders. But seriously, will you not acknowledge that the PAC 12 is mediocre
at best, and that Utah is a less than mediocre team in a mediocre conference.
Does it somehow help you feel better about yourself to keep ragging
on it, go for it. But no matter how you posture, you got taken to OT by the
team that is the UNLV of it's conference. I just think the arrogance is
unwarranted, and you may yet regret the team you play in a bowl.
Thank you WOLF for your comments. I would like to see the day when a Cougar and
a Ute "shall lie down together without any ire". Just comment civilly
on your own team and leave the other team alone.
New Mexico State Aggies? What's an Aggie? Come on. They are out of the
football business in New Mexico. The next thing we'll hear is that a Montana
State or Montana, or an Idaho or Idaho State win was great. Let's just say that
the Cougars as an independent had to fill in the weeks with teams, and nothing
else was available. And now Hawaii to end the season. The best that can be
said for this season is that it is a transition year into heaven only knows what
as to a future possible affiliation with a conference that means something. The
WCC for basketball doesn't make sense to me either. Obviously BYU is probably
continuing to knock on the door of any number of conferences to enhance the bank
account and take the pressure off the exorbitant costs of NCAA athletics for the
university. You can't blame them. Playing teams from the Big Sky, the WAC,
etc. type of conferences in my mind cannot generate any enthusiasm from us fans.
Local news media should not characterize these victories as feathers in any cap
at Cougarville. I am a Cougar fan want the teams to be competitive. No
