With a win today, the Pac 12 chamionship game and Rose Bowl are very much in play because UCLA beat ASU last week!

    Get er done Utes!

Very much in play is not a phrase I would use to describe "Utah wins out and Arizona State loses out as well as UCLA dropping another game after this one assuming this one even ends in a Utah win". we're not going to the PAC-12 championship or the Rose Bowl. What we are going to get is a utah team that despite not having Wynn will most likely have either a 4-5 or 5-4 conference record at the end of the season. That seems good enough.

Uh...yeah. The New Mexico bowl is probably more at play for Utah at this point than the Rose Bowl.

The snow should be a big advantage for Utah against the coastal UCLA though UCLA relies more on the run so they might not be as harmed by it as they would be otherwise.

Alt, asu would not have to lose out because since ucla has tiebreaker over asu and we will have it over ucla. I don't know how tiebreaker is settled but we just need asu to lose two of three. Utah vs oregon for first ever pac 12 championship! Go utes!

Good one! You had me rolling, I was laughing so hard. For a minute, I thought you were serious. You're either joking, or your real name is Jake Heaps and you've already decided to transfer to the TUN.

The only conference games U will win are Arizona, Oregon State and Colorado is a 50/50. Those three schools would finish in the bottom half of the MWC.

Uh...There are not enough teams in the Pac-12 that are bowl eligible for a team to qualify for the New Mexico Bowl. I know you would like to see us there. But, the Sun Bowl or the Las Vegas Bowls are the most likely destinations for the Utes. Not bad for our first year in the Pac-12.

Too bad BYU can't make it to Vegas. I another beat down by the Utes and you go back into your fetal position until Spring ball.

Utah's defense is legit. Even with a D2 QB throwing for 67 yards we dominated.

The probability of finishing 8-4 and a Sun Bowl game against Florida State/Virgina/Georgia Tech looks achievable.

    Go UTES!!

    Lifelong:

Let me know if you need a place to stay when you go to the championship game at the Rose Bowl, because you won't be able to find a room in Pasadena when the ASU crowd starts booking hotels. Also, plan on renting a car because I'm not driving you to Pasadena to see the Sun Devils.

The Rose Bowl is only "very much in play" if ASU loses tonight to WSU and then loses to U of A, who got clobbered by CU - I repeat, CU!

The Cal-ASU game will be a contest if Cottonwood's Sofele has the kind of game in Tempe that he had today in Berkeley (190 yards on 23 carries - how did we not save a scholarship for him?). If they beat WSU and U of A and lose to Cal their record will be 6-3.

Let's see what happens in Pullman tonight.

nicely done being bowl eligible again Utes. Now if my Cougars could do likewise without having to beat teams like the Sisters of Saint Mary (sorry Idaho fans, no disrespect directly intended)... I would feel better. I am sitting here watching them play yet another team with a loosing record - speaking of the Y.

Really, can't we schedule some better teams. If the Y wants to be the Notre Dame of the West, please schedule games like the Irish do. Idaho is great for homecoming, senior day... but really.... enough Idaho style teams on the Y's schedule.

White gets the rock over 30 times again, rushes for 170+ yards again, scores 3 TDs (two rushing and one receiving), catches the ball, picks up blitzes, and is durable as anyone in college football.

White is a special player, a once in a blue moon player, and the college version of Matt Forte.

Utah should go 8-4, if they do that wont be a bad season at all for their first season in the pac 12, especially since they lost their QB so early, and their current QB only needs 50 yards a game and no TOs to win.

There aren't BYU fans talking trash, but there are Utah alums (like me) taking issue with homers like Lifelong and Chris B who are spouting like the Y fans they're so critical of for "marking down" impossible achievements.

Let's get real - we're not going to the Rose Bowl this year unless we win out (realistic) and ASU loses out (unrealistic). If we are tied with ASU we're still not going to the Rose Bowl because ASU owns a tie breaker over us. If ASU, the U, and UCLA are tied, ASU goes based on the PAC-12 rules for breaking a three-way tie. The fact that we beat UCLA, who beat ASU, who beat us doesn't mean we go over ASU; the tie will be broken based on who has the highest BCS ranking and best overall record (that would be ASU).

We had a good win tonight, and the team can now focus on WSU - another team we should beat. I'm excited that we can finish with a good win streak. Let's quit talking Rose Bowl in the same manner Jake talked national championship. In other words, let's not be stupid; it's ASU v. Oregon.

The 54-10 thrashing by the Utes was also hilarious. Yes indeed you have quite the comedy club there at LES. I think you're on to something. I'll be a realistic U fan. Utah won't be playing in the Rose Bowl this year. Statistically it's possible, but the odds are against us. Utah is no doubt a middle of the PAC team this year. But,Utah has a great defense to hang with any of the Pac-12 teams. They just need to get the offense up there. I see Utah will be contenders in the next few years with good recruits coming in. You would be unwise to quote some of the posters on here and then call it fact.

The Pac-12 has 7 bowl tie ins, not including if Stanford made it to a BCS game as an at-large.

Currently there are 6 bowl eligible teams, which of course does not include 8-2 USC who is on probabtion. If UCLA manages to win one of their last two (Colorado or USC) they will also be bowl eligible. Having 7 bowl eligible teams, plus another that is quite good but can't go bowling, doesn't make the PAC-12 a "weak" conference.

This is one Ute fan who is aware that only a miracle will see the Utes in the PAC-12 championship game, so I'm not holding my breath.

  • MN Ute SALT LAKE CITY, UT

K, just to clarify on the the tiebreaking rule that some people have partially right:
If there is a three-way conference tie, the team with the worst BCS ranking is knocked out. Then, whichever of the two won the head to head is declared the winner.
e.g. Threeway tie between us, ASU, and UCLA where us and ASU have the higher rankings. UCLA is out, then we follow since ASU won the head to head.
For us to get to the Rose Bowl (unlikely, but possible), we'd have to win both games and end up 8-4(5-4), ASU would have to lose at least two of their last three games (possible, not probable, and UCLA would have to lose at least one of their last two games (likely to happen against USC and maybe even CU).
Honestly, as a Ute, I feel that we don't deserve to be in the South Championship with 4 conference losses. That said, I have no complaints taking what is rightfully USC's and making the most of the opportunity. GO UTES!

If ASU beats Arizona they would have the tie-breaker in a threee-way tie with Utah and UCLA (record within the division) and in a two-way tie with Utah. (Head-to-head). If ASU loses to AZ but beats Cal, they would still have the tie-breaker in a three-way tie (best record against the next-best team, which is USC).

ASU is once again a head case. I love the Devils but they seriously need a session. At this point, the U may just win the south if the devils keep this up. Unbelievable that this is the same ASU team that thumped the Trojans, Utes, Beavers, and Cal.

Utes looked solid in this win.

I am ashamed of some of my Cougar brethren presuming to talk smack to the Utes.

There can be no argument that the Utes' win in RES last night was much more impressive than our scrimmage against a JC in LES.

And there can be no argument that the Utes' 54-10 victory earlier this season was more impressive than our 10-54 loss on the same night - right here in our own house!

But then, humility was never a characteristic of BYU Cougars. Funny how that works.

"@majmajor, You are in Utah. Your almost there. You can say we instead of you. You can cheer for more than one team. Utah's win has not affect on the position of your other team. Cheering for more than one team is twice the fun. Thanks for the post."

I support all of the Utah teams, but my team is the Cougars. I love watching college football and as a Service Member, I love evaluating teamwork.

Growing up in the South-Eastern U.S. the culture requires someone to pick his team, and stick with it. People may harass you for supporting a certain team, but you would lose all respect if you claimed Alabama as YOUR team one year, and Auburn the next. It was ok to switch teams, but the cause had to be for basic character reasons.

I.e. While growing up, I was a Dallas Cowboys fan. When the unprofessional, cowardly, and lowly Jones fired the greatest Coach in the World (Landry) through the media, MY NFL team became the 49ers. Through thick and thin the 9ers are mine. I like watching other teams with local players, but the loyalty for the 9ers remain.

    GO COUGS!

    Lifelong Ute

    "Our defense can stop oregon!"

    In your dreams.

But, you needn't worry too much about it.

ASU will destroy Arizona and Utah will lose to WSU this week and all of the silly hysteria from beating three teams with a combined 9-21 record will end with a thud.

To Lifelong Ute ... Did you really type " Our defense can stop Oregon " ?? I appreciate that you're a fan , but statements like this make you look ridiculous. Did you watch Stanford / Oregon ?? Oregon is not Arizona and is not UCLA. If Cal can put up 30 + on the Ute defense, the Ducks would put close to 50 on the board. IMO

Seriously, what has happened to ASU? Injuries? Or just the toughness of the PAC 12? Washington St. had nearly 500 years passing!

Anyway, I don't see ASU losing out, but I really want ASU to beat Oregon in the championship game. (People here talking like Utah might go - not going to happen.) Hopefully ASU can pull things together assuming they make it to the championship game (I think they will) and give Oregon a real scare at least.

Anyway, I am glad to see the Utes back on track!

Congrats Utah over UCLA. It was a good win. You could see Chow's influence in that game. Defense, as expected played tough.

FYI, LA Times considers this UCLA defeat to be a great disgrace at the hands of a "second rate team" (T J Simers). It will be the end of Neuheisel at UCLA. Good job, Utes.

I just need it to be made crystal clear in potato head language to any up in the clouds Ute fans that the championship game is in Oregon since they will have won the north and essentially the conference... The championship game on December 2nd is only a mere technicality. Is it not true that barring a fold Oregon would go to a BCS game of more significance than the over hyped rose bowl? Would not STanford get that nudge since they have the second best record in the conference? I love how the conference championship game has no bearing on the bowl bids. Even if the Utes do get there by the luck of late season melt downs they will NOT win it! Their hopes are in Texas or Nevada... Bowls of the Sun or the Sin.

  • Jake2010 bountiful, ut
    Nov. 13, 2011 4:50 p.m.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Oregon will NOT be in the championship game unless there is a huge unexpected melt down at Oklahoma State.... What will happen is it will be A) LSU v Ok St U or B) LSU v Alabama for a rematch.... A rematch which has this interesting side note... The road team has won how many of the past x amount of games between the two teams?

Tom in CA, how dellusional you have become. Your beloved Cougs couldn't even be a bottem feeder like Idaho by more that the Utes beat (down) your beloved kittens. ULCA and AZ would beat BYU no doubt as BYU can't beat any BCS team unless it is hapless Ole Miss who is the absolute worst team in the SEC (by one point). @Tom in CA

Time for our weekly reality check for delusional Cougar fans:

    Current Sagarin Rankings:

Idaho #137, UCLA #61, Arizona #80. Sorry Tom, not even close.

    Utah #34, SOS #32
    BYU #53, SOS #96

    Average opponent Sagarin Ranking:

    Utah #60.9
    BYU #92.7

    Best Win:

    Utah - BYU #53, Pitt #59, UCLA #61, Montana State #70, Arizona #80
    BYU - Utah State #82, UCF #86

Utah now has 5 wins against teams better than anyone BYU has beaten. And Washington State is now #77, so that could be 6 after Saturday.

    Worst opponents:

    Utah - Oregon State #99, Colorado #111
    BYU - OSU #99, SJSU #113, Ole Miss #115, NMSU #121, Idaho #137, ISU #206

Utah plays 1 team ranked +100, BYU plays 5.

Please, please just stop comparing schedules.

    williary,

Nice analysis using the Sagarin Rankings.

You probably already know this, but the BCS formula already takes SOS into consideration, on a week-by-week basis, re-computing SOS in light of new wins and losses.

It also includes in its formula the Harris, Coaches, Sagarin, Colley, Anderson-Hester, Billingley, Massey, & Wolfe rankings and polls.

So, I like your analysis, and I think it is correct.

But the BCS rankings have BYU at #37 and Utah at #39.

I'm not convinced BYU is the better team, of course. The 54-10 spanking we got outweighs all the polls and rankings in the universe.

    But I'm just sayin'...

    Honor Code,

No BCS bowl this year, but playing in a league that is sending two teams to BCS bowls for the second year in a row means our BCS bowl dreams have a much better chance of coming true in the next few years than BYU's.

  • Mormon Ute Kaysville, UT
    Nov. 15, 2011 10:00 a.m.

    Y ask Y,

I looked all over the internet and couldn't find a BCS ranking that goes below 25. So where did you get your ranking for BYU and Utah? I think I know. The USA Today Coaches poll has BYU and Utah about where you said the BCS has us. Guess what, the Coaches poll is pure opinion and has nothing to do with SOS. Any ranking taking into account SOS has Utah above BYU.

  • williary Kearns, UT
    Nov. 15, 2011 12:20 p.m.

    @Y ask Y

I believe BCS rankings only go to #25. Like the poster above pointed out, you're seeing the "Others Receiving Votes" section of the Coaches poll. BYU had 4 votes, Utah had 2.

Sagarin Rankings are completely computer based. Just straight facts, no opinions.
