How come the mighty Aggs are not blowing this pathetic Byu team out of the
Has anyone seen Jimmer?
Coug's offense was weak throughout the game, but it was pathetic for 10 - 12
minutes in the second half. I can't wait until Carlino fills the PG position.
Zylstra is not a PG. Maybe he can play the "2". I have to believe
that Cusick, Winder or Martineau would do a better job at the PG position than
what we saw tonight. And Collinsworth has definately lost a step or
two from where he was at the beginning of last year. I thought Austin did a
better job off the bench than Collinsworth.
Make that 26 wins to one loss for Stew and instate home games. Is it any wonder
that the Utes wont make the trip to Cache Valley anymore?Great
Kudos to the Aggies and Coach Morrill. They exposed BYU's shortcomings. The
Cougars have a lot of work to do.The Spectrum fans do a great job.
Good luck, Aggies! I hope you have another great year.
BYU Who. Bo ho Bo ho that's who. Go back to your pathetic blue - Baby Blue. We
knew who - WOULD WIN!GO TRUE BLUE
I just thought, what a great start to the weekend!
Just another typical game in Logan. The refs were intimidated by the fans and
the Cougars were cheated. There were numerous fouls on the USU players that
were not called. Same as always when you visit Logan.
@Aggie84Congratulations. Don't worry about the "Blue" no one in
the lower divisions of the NCAA uses it right now. You will be the sole team
with that blue next year.Enjoy the victory.
@jarka-rusLosing 6 seniors and having freshmen play significant
rolls will do that to you on the first game of the season. Rest assured, we
would blow them to pieces later in the season. BYU has a good team,
if they can find a point guard I think they'll be fine in the WCC.
@ 3rdGenAggieBYU lost arguably their best player ever as well as one
of their best defensive players ever. Jimmer+Emery > 6 Aggie seniors. BYU
also had to rely on young and/or inexperienced players a lot.BYU is
also rebuilding and has talented pieces. Once they gel more and get their
collective feet wet, they could be an excellent team. I think "later in the
season" both teams will be better and it would be a closer game. And I
think BYU would win.
@mildred. And I suppose you had no problem with the cougs being handed a
victory by the refs last year in Provo.
USU won. Good for them. They are supposed to win on their home floor. I would
guess that had this game been played in Provo, the Cougars would have won. On a
neutral court? It's a toss up, but I think the Cougars would still win that
one. The crowd really got into their heads late in the 2nd half when the Aggies
managed to pull away. That wouldn't happen on a neutral court, I don't think.
@Mildred. Did you see the same game I did? I'll agree that those
officials were beyond atrocious, but they were most definitely bad both ways.
Go replay the first 10 minutes of the 2nd Half if you want to see it go BYU's
way. Just for the record...they were your referees (from your
conference). WCC refs are the worst in the business. Enjoy that the rest of
Oh no, the fall from greatness hurts. Should have seen it coming. Whie teams
were double teaming Jimmer, that always left somebody open, so the returning
players for BYU looked like they were great players hitting open shots last
year. Now that all players can be guarded, looks like BYU would not win the MWC,
WAC, or WCC. I know, Utes are bad, blah, blah, (though ex-Ute Morgan Grimm
played a major role in the game) we have nowhere to go but up. But the fall is
going to be very hard for Provo fans.
Congrats USU, but will you ever do anything relevant off of your home floor?
Mildred, really! You might want to sit down before you read this, but guess
what? It happens in Provo, yep, same stuff different city.
Dear Mildred, Please have someone teach you about basketball so that you will
have at least a very small idea of how to comment on a game. The officials were
WCC refs and bad all the way around.
BYU played well, their big men were impressive. Their PG not so much.
Sam Wise, I'm not sure that is a valid assessment. For that to be true playing
Jimmer and Emery against 6 players, I doubt they'd win 2 on 5 (with one
Samwise the Aggies had all of 4 players on the roster who have ever played a D1
game before tonight so the Aggies are doing even more rebuilding than the y. I
think that later in the year the Aggies would win by 10-14 points but since that
won't happen we will all just have to enjoy a nice 7 point victory.
Try as I might to give the benefit of the doubt, the Y fan shows his true color,
or rather true pucker, feasting upon sour grapes. I gotta say, you guys (at
least 4 out of 5 of ya) are the sorest losers I ever come up against. Really.
Either your knowledge of basketball is so poor, or your pride so deep, that a
loss to the Aggies, just kills you. Frankly, I thought the Ags played
surprisinly pretty well. They are rebuilding the entire team and I was a bit
nervous going in. BYU is a great team and is going to do well. I think this game
demonstrated that. I have to admit that it will be fun to watch your response to
the improvement of USU athletics. The Aggies are headed in a positive direction
in the major sports. It's slow, but it's real. I will leave it up to you to
decide what direction you think the Y is headed, but you just might have more of
those grapes to eat from here on out.
It seems that BYU needs someone who can knock down the 3. It doesn't help when
they can't get good looks. Until Carlino is eligible, I'd say we could improve
by hitting more free throws, getting more fast break opportunities, and taking
care of the ball. Then work in a few screen-away plays to give Rodgers and
Abouo some open looks from behind the arc. It would also be good if
Collinsworth would establish his role- as rebounder/shot blocker or something.
He really struggled. There will be some growing pains, but the team looked
pretty good overall.
As usual, the home team wins this game by a half dozen or so. It was great this
year! I love our home crowd, they are truly a 6th man and can be as
entertaining as the game at times...(although I want to apologize for those few
fans should have left the Davies thing alone...not classy, not even creative).
It was a shrewd move by Rose to insist on this game as the 1st of
the season....before our plethora of young guys had a chance to get some
experience and improve as the season goes on (as Stew Morrill's teams always do,
more so than other teams in my opinion). But you have to credit Stew for having
our guys ready, despite the youth and lack of experience...granted BY did have
the same issue to a lesser degree.
Dave S:Has anyone seen the 8 players that transferred from the U? Or
your timeout? Heard you were looking for that too?
Well, that made the football game in Provo so much more easier to swallow. Oh,
and sure we lost that game, but there is at least one thing about that game that
makes it so much easier to swallow. We are your rivals. You rushed the field.
You're in denial to think otherwise. With that said, good luck Cougars on the
rest of your season; you'll need it against the likes of Gonzaga and St. Mary's.
Peace out.Go USU! Go Aggies!
Once again Coug nation finds a multitude of excuses to cover up the gaps in
their teams performance.
Weak guards but solid and skilled inside...guess what...no one-dimensional team
will succeed. Bring on Carlino!!
The officials were pretty bad. I can think of a few charges called on Brockeith
Pane that were a joke. One of them when Brandon Davies was knocked down by BK in
the restricted area, and a couple others where Brockeith was in the air before
BYU players gained their footing.WCC officials need to review their
Wow, that was what college basketball rivalries are about! Phenomenal game,
regardless of which side of the fence you fall on. I could have done without a
few of the Davies jabs, but you had to know that was coming regardless of who
BYU is playing--an unfortunate side of any college rivalry. Referees were
atrocious on both sides of the ball, but what's new? Overall, a great game.
The Spectrum was out of control--best I've seen it since UNR in 2008. BYU
certainly came to play, but I was very impressed with the mettle of our untested
new guys. We're looking forward to getting to know them better from the stands.
They've got some things to learn, but what a way to come out with a very
hard-fought victory. BYU will do well this season, and, now that we have the
rivalry game over, we Aggies wish them the best in the WCC.
Rebuilding year. It's not looking good so far; barely win against DII Dixie
State and lose at Utah State. Don't expect a tournament team this year, but who
knows, maybe they can get better. Our guard play isn't looking promising.
Hey Mildred, did you see that BYU was in the double bonus with over 11 minutes
remaining. That means Ut St had 10 fouls on them. BYU didn't even have close
to that many. Also, the refs were from BYUs conference, the WCC not the WAC.
To give BYU a chance Rose insisted on the WCC refs and playing the first game of
the season. Even with Ut St losing all but 2 of the main players from last year
it just didn't work out.
I was at the game tonight. Great environment (one of the chants was
questionable), but kudos to BYU for coming to Logan to play. BYU's big men are
going to be good. I was worried about this game for the Aggies, but the new
comers came in and did well. Pane was very good in the 2nd half. Looking forward
to a good year from the Aggies and BYU.
Best team in the state, hands down.
BYU was just too slow. Once again, they don't have the athletes. The Aggies,
on the other hand, looked amazing, dunking, running the floor, etc, etc.
The Cougars looked slow in the backcourt and the front line. Other than Davies,
I did not see much movement. I would like to see more desire and drive to win.
If this is what the Cougars are this season, it is going to be a long road to
the end. I thought this was a Sweet-16 team.
Great game, Ags looked a little fresh as did the Cougars. True enough that
Carlino is much needed for the Y. Zylstra although tall was the weak link in
BYU's game, he is really slow. Paine abused him in the 2nd half. Our inside game
looked a little weak at times but to our credit we won the battle of the boards
which I truly thought BYU would dominate, didn't go that way, great for us.Great atmosphere, Spectrum just gets better with time. Good
Davies deserved every single jab he received. He started talking trash earlier
this week about how he can ignore the fans, even if the Spectrum is a tough
place to play. We just did our best to prove otherwise!
Good win, but I won't class it as a great win. We have a lot to do out on the
road and in the tournament. If we can't win with Wesley et al what are we going
to do with the young players we have now. Home and home with the Y we would
split. I don't want to play them later in the year, Davis, Collinsworth and the
others will pick up and the young players will get the experience. All I can say
is, this is a great rivalry and should be played every year. These
are the two best teams in Utah, no doubt about it. Too bad we can't have a kind
of round robin. The one thing that this does is like the Utah football game with
the Y, gives someone bragging rights for the year. Of course there
is no real reason to play the U this year, I don't want to be compared on a
regular basis with Adams State.Go Aggies and win that one in the
Mildred, Mildred, Mildred. The refs had nothing to do with the game. They
seldom if ever do. Utah State has a "huge" LDS population of students
and nothing is to be gained by any favortism being shown. But, that gym is
really, really hard to play in for visitors because of the noise. If the BYU
student body had half the enthusiasm the Aggie fans do they could affect games
the same way. Go there some time. It's magical. Well done Aggies. Well done!
Let me make this clear:Mildred in Fillmore is a well-known Ute troll
who likes to make embarrassingly outrageous comments on BYU articles in attempt
to shed a bad light on BYU fans. Granted, there are a few BYU fans that make
some dumb statements, but Mildred is NOT a BYU fan. Please ignore the childish
antics of this troll.
Sorry idablu, I responded to the Mildred posts before I got all the way down to
yours. Well said and good explanation of who Mildred really is.
BYU badly needs a Point Guard that is quick enough to get to the rim, Who knows
how to penetrate and kick out to shooters who can hopefully knock em down...
That PG also needs to be able to hit with consistency from the outside when his
man sags on him... Unfortunately, BYU doesn't have such a guard.... They did, in
the form of Michael Loyd but we couldn't keep him in school and out of
trouble... We knew that we were going to get to this point and we had a year to
find a JC fill in till Emery and a couple other Guard recruits graduate and head
to the Marriot Center.BYU has alot of good pieces for a successful
team this, but until they can cover the #1, we're exposed. There is not a better
cover in College Hoops in the #2 and #3 spot then Charles Abuo.... When Rogers
is hot he can kill a team from the outside.... And Davies is as good of slasher
as there is in the game from a #4 or #5 spot... Hatsock is solid and
Collinsworth and Harrison will come along... But we desperately need a solid #1.
Abou should have stayed in Logan if he wanted to be on a winning team. There is
always a transfer possibility. Just ask Nelson.
