It was very satisfying as the Cougars were demolished 54-10 at LES.
Obviously low expectations.
"Pleased with first year": I guess I missed something this year. 54-10: So much for your pac-whatever melt down. Oh wait, round ball is
I think honest fans disagree with Bronco. This first season of independence has
been anything but pleasing. Just wait for Saturday night -- second
half, with the snow falling, sub 20's temperature, playing the might Idaho
Vandals -- that is not very pleasing. Oh wait, it is on ESPN so that makes up
for it. Not very pleasing getting beat 54-10 by your rivals on your home field
or watching the pre-season heisman award winner get benched in favor of a kid
that has guts but no throwing arm. Then sitting on the sidelines while inferior
teams are invited to BCS conferences in front of you. Pleasing?
I am not sure what is so pleasing about playing a football schedule with so many
teams that are not in BCS conference? I think BYU's arguement of being in BCS
conference or being eligible for a BCS invite is diluted each time BYU schedules
or plays against a football team from a non BS conference. What was
the purpose of going independent in football if it wasn't to increase sports
revenue and exposure for BYU football? Surely it wasn't to increase the win
record against teams that are not from a BCS conference.Who handles
the scheduling of games as an independent? Does the coach have input? I would be
dismayed as Cougar Club member, BYU alumni, player or coach to have the schedule
BYU had in 2011 as an football independent. For all intent BYU was in FCS
conference in Division IA football this year.
I gotta disagree w/ Mendenhall's assesment. As a Y fan, this has been one of the
most frustrating seasons I can ever remember. 2011 will always be the year that
we lost yet again (for the fourth time in a row) to
"Hitch-yer-pants-up" Patterson and his horned Frogs; won a handful of
meaningless games against vastly inferior teams and watched as our hopeful QB of
the future struggled and was eventually benched. 2011 is the year where we knew
our bowl destination once we lost our first game--a game in which the team
turtled up in the second half and practically handed to Texas on a silver
platter--and that bowl destination is quite frankly, embarrassing. But most of
all, 2011 will always be the year our rival came into LES and absolutely
destroyed us from top to bottom. And the worst part about that game? the players
quit. You could see it in their body language. Bronco being pleased sounds like
coach speak for: "Look at our record, we are having a great season, and I
am doing a great job." Respectively Bronco, I gotta disagree.
Bronco. If you are pleased with the first year of independence, and
this is what Cougar Fan's can come to expect in the future it's time to look for
a new Head Coach. Signed 99% of Cougar fan's
People, people, people...what else would you expect Bronco to say...get real!It was the first year of independence, my marriage struggled for ten
years, give the guy a break...he did not make a schedule, hello. The
problem is scheduling...BYU took what was available, I only hope with more lead
time, we are able to schedule better teams later in the season...if you people
thought it was going to be a bed of roses for BYU going it alone, you also
probably thought Utah would succeed in the PAC 12...both take time...
I don't know why my fellow Cougar fans would want to schedule top tier BCS teams
or even BCS teams for that matter. They would get beat by any top 25 team in the
country and get beaten badly. This year, BYU does not belong with any teams in
the country except for the WAC and MWC minus TCU and BSU. This coaching staff
and Bronco continues to dissapoint me. His rhetoric is absolutely pathetic and
boring. Come on Bronco, get real...Who have we beat this year of any value? Who?
Oregon State? Is that our best win?Is this what BYU football has
come to? Saying we are having a successful season when we have beat the likes of
San Jose Diddley Tech, The Beavers, The Aggies (WAC) team, my alma mater ISU
Bengals, Central Florida whom got beat by Florida International Airport, and the
bottom feeder SEC team, Mississippi on a lucky one point victory. Until Bronco is relieved of his duties or fired, then all Coug fans should get
used to his definition of a "successful" season which ecompasses
beating lower tier BCS teams and occasional WAC and Big Sky Teams. Ouch!
BYU DUDEDear Mr. Occupy BYU Comment Boards. Hate to break it to you,
Dude, but you are not the 99%!
Overall Independence has been a big improvement to being in the MWC with its
terrible TV coverage. BYU is light years ahead of Utah in TV coverage. I get to
watch all BYU games here in South Korea. My Ute friends have to read about the
Ute games on the internet.
Get real fans. Anyone who did not know the first year of independence would
look like this was blind. The schedule for 2012 will be better than 2011. The
schedule for 2013 will be better than 2012. In 2011, we had 10
games on ESPN compared to 1 game in 2010. We're going to finish the regular
season with a 9-3 record and are likely to get matched up with a solid CUSA team
in the Armed Forces Bowl. It will be a much better match-up than last years
bowl game.In 2011, IF one or two plays had gone differently we would
have beaten a solid Texas team. IF our punting game had not collapsed, we would
have beaten TCU. 2011 is a good year, but not a great year. It's a
much better year than 2010, playing more BCS teams, and in front of a national
audience.Momentum is picking up for BCS proposal to include Top 10
teams in BCS bowls, regardless of conference. This would be a big win for BYU,
opening up access. If it happens, look for more teams with a national brand
(USC, Texas) to go indy.

Bleed Red is watching the Ute Games in Salt Lake City with his laptop. I love
it! Wow that is great TV coverage for you and the little pac12!
All 16 comments are true. But, the Coach is covering his job and his boss. Why
fire the coach? He didn't make the mess. So, who did? Also, it all fits in with
that old line What's in a name? Say Notre Dame. But has any fan taken the
trouble to check the records and names of its "independent" schedule?
Six have losing records and three are part of the proposed Big East. BYU has
played most of them and, in spite of the research by the Oklahoma U history
professor, won the game. Even if the Georgia Bulldogs just played New Mexico
State, they are covered by their good name and are not demeaned. So, join the
Big East. If not, this time we should know why not.
I like independence. I had a great time at Ole Miss. I plan to go to Notre Dame
next year. The schedule will get better. I like to see BYU play a bunch of new
teams. It's fun.I think Penn State's disaster, the dissolution of
conferences, the scramble for BCS AQ eligibility, and the Ohio State affair will
doom the BCS. A lot of schools are going to look at their athletic programs
differently. There has been a lot of abuse and cheating. The AQ/Non AQ BS is a
major problem. Open it up and Independence becomes really attractive.Who cares about the National Championship? Penn State, a great program, has
won 2. How many of the NCAA BCS division have ever won a single NC? 1%? The BCS
is rigged, we all know that.BYU is in a strong position. Stay Indy
is my vote. We'll get a BCS invite if we win. And maybe the BCS will change.
Maybe not. Does it really matter? Stay Indy and win, baby.
@ SportsFan"ESPN > KJZZAny fan who tries to

further! You are correct about ESPN being greater than KJZZ. Utah will only use
KJZZ for this year. You are forgetting the Pac-12 has contracts with ESPN and
Fox that begin next year. (No more KJZZ). The Pac-12 will launch the Pac-12
National Network which will televise the remaining football and men's basketball
games that have not been picked up by ESPN and Fox networks. In simpler terms
"Every football and men's basketball game will be nationally
televised!". The six Pac-12 regional networks are to televise the
non-football and men's basketball sports. Hang in there band of
little brothers, you'll be seeing your big brother on national TV next year.
Well I'm not pleased with the performance of the football team but that is a
completely different subject than being pleased with Independence. I'm very
pleased with that. The fact is Bronco needs to improve his teams
performance next year from what it was this year. The schedule itself is a
little bit better next year so that will be nice. The schedule will be much
better the following year with games against Texas, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech,
Boise St, USU, Houston, Hawaii and utah. That is an excellent schedule with more
games to be announced. And if BYU can continue to put together
schedules like that then Independence will be an overwhelming success provided
the teams performance improves. That is on Bronco, he is the coach. If he cannot
perform up to the level of the schedule then he will have to be replaced with
someone that can.But yes Independence itself is pretty pleasing
despite the teams disappointing showing. Remember one is not the same as the
The first year scheduling was understandable and I'm OK with that. I am
confident it will get better. However our performance in the limelight of ESPN
has been very disappointing--starting with the debacle with Utah. We've lost
every important game on ESPN this year. I didn't expect an undefeated season
this year but I did expect a good showing on the national stage. If Bronco is
really pleased with our debut as independents, then seriously, we need a coach
with higher expectations. The only thing that disappoints me more than the
Cougars' performance this season is this article and Bronco's comments.
