ok stay with me here people. utes win out and end up 8-4 and 3 wins in the south. having beat UCLA they too will only have 3 wins in the south (assuming they beat colorado and lose to USC). THEN ASU loses out because they play like they did last night...3 way tie in the south...UTES have the better record and go to the championship game. improbable-yes. impossible-no!

Good solid effort by all phases. Hays has progressed. Special teams were special. The stats were skewed by the garbage time offense by UA. GO UTES!

This was a fun game to watch! Utah came up with some huge plays on offense, defense, and special teams.

Utah haters have tried to spin this victory as insignificant and meaningless but it's not. Arizona is better than their record suggests. And with the adversity that Utah has seen with injuries and shooting themselves in the foot with turnovers, this game was big.

    A tale of two cities.

Salt Lake City - UCLA visiting this week. PAC-12 conference. Possible 8-4 season with 3 lossess to Top 25 teams. Although it isn't "the best of times" (two undefeated seasons in last 10 years; 2 BCS bowl wins; beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl: etc.) it is a Very Good Year.

Provo - Idaho visiting. "Nuff said!"

The MWC Utes had commitments to the Fiesta and Sugar bowl. The Las Vegas Bowl was equally "unreachable" for TCU, and it looks like it will be "unreachable" for Boise State this year.

Wishful thinking. ASU lost to UCLA(5-4) on the road. They're not going to lose to Arizona(2-7) at home.

Besides, UCLA is now in the driver's seat and the Bruins just beat the team that destroyed the Utes 35-14 in RES.

It's not likely at all but for Utah to go to the PAC-12 championship, they need to win out, Arizona St. needs to lose to Arizona and California and UCLA needs to lose to Utah and USC.

Arizona St. will probably not implode like that but UCLA losing to Utah and USC could easily happen. With that, Utes would just need to win out and they'd get to the Sun Bowl.

Even if Utah loses to UCLA they will still go to the Las Vegas Bowl. Not bad considering they started 0-4 in conference play.

and we just rolled over a team that DESTROYED UCLA...parody in the pac 12 is the key to its competitiveness. i said improbable, but also arizona st has to play a competitive CAL team and Washington St. Plus colorado cant lost EVERY game. but like i said, whatever...unlikely. the chance that it COULD happen though makes this season at least interesting.

"parody in the pac 12 is the key to its competitiveness."

lol, talk of the "competitiveness" of the PAC 12 is quite a spoof.

The only reason Utah fans are so confident that Utah can win at least one of their last three games to become bowl eligible is because Utah's new "rival", #130 Colorado, is one of the worst teams in the country (there are 25 D1-AA ranked ahead of the Buffs) and Washington State isn't a whole lot better.

    #87 Utah State
    #93 Oregon State
    #94 Washington State
    #126 New Mexico State
    #130 Colorado
    #135 Idaho

The dregs of the PAC 12 would fit right in with the dregs of WAC.

"The Utes had a better shot at the Las Vegas Bowl in the Mountain West, which was time and time again unreachable".

When Utah wins Mountain West Conference Titles they play in BCS Bowl Games. When BYU wins Mountain West Conference Titles they play in Vegas. I don't know why you Cougar fans take pride in the Las Vegas Bowl.... Oh wait, I do know! The Las Vegas Bowl is BYU's modern day Holiday Bowl. But, being Independent you don't get to play in your most coveted bowl game anymore because of your contracts with the Helicopter Bowl and the Kraft's Macaroni and Cheese Bowl. lol.

    ----------

    You lost me at "ok".

ASU will win the South and play Stanford for the PAC-12 title.
Stanford, crossing fingers, will win out and play LSU in the national title game. Andrew Luck will show LSU what a real NFL QB looks like for the first time this season.

Utah should finish 3rd behind USC in the South.

Interesting you would quote (partially) the Sagarin ratings as it has the PAC-12 4th among conferences and the WAC 10th (including the indys), then try to equate the bottom feeders. The parity to which bentheute speaks of describes the top to middle of the PAC-12. Every conference has it's "dregs", ask Ole Miss.

For those of you wishing for a more complete record, to decide the great "spoof" for yourself, here are the current rankings:

    PAC-12:
    6 Stanford
    7 Oregon
    19 Arizona State
    20 Southern California
    36 Washington
    42 Utah
    49 California
    52 UCLA
    67 Arizona
    93 Oregon State
    94 Washington State
    130 Colorado

    WAC:
    50 Nevada
    69 Louisiana Tech
    87 Utah State
89 Hawaii (left out by midpacmajor, possibly because it's BYU's lone remaining "good" game?)
103 Fresno State (left out, perhaps becasue they are Ole Miss's lone FBS win)
110 San Jose State (also left out, possibly because it was another Y win)
    126 New Mexico State
    135 Idaho

Colorado, the only 100+ rated PAC team.

Here is the difference in viewpoints being in the Pac 12 vs the MWC: In the MWC, you go to the Vegas Bowl if you go 10-2 or 11-1. I think everyone sees that as a great record. In the PAC12, you go to the Vegas bowl at 6-6, on the heals of a season like Utah has had this year. Bottom line, if Utah wins out, they will not be in the Vegas Bowl. If they go 1-2, then they get the Vegas bowl, which is exactly what a 6-6 team deserves.

I have said it before, but the Vegas bowl sucks if you win your conference or go 10-2 or 11-1 because you end up playing a middle of the pack team from the Pac 12. A 10-2 or 11-1 team deserves better than that. the biggest drawback for the MWC was that they could never properly negotiate a real bowl contract.

    midpacmajor -

How do you feel about being absolutely exposed by MiP? Any response?
And MiP, thanks for giving us all the COMPLETE sagarin ratings...I was headed there to do the same for our friend midpacmajor...it was very obvious he/she had left a few teams out in a poor attempt to skew the facts and con a few people.
Bottom line, Utah is in a tough conference now...it'll never be an easy feat to win the Pac-12. Take a look at the home and away records of every team in the conference outside of Stanford and Oregon and you'll see what every one was talking about when they said the Utah's, Boise States and TCU's of the world would have a lot tougher time getting to a BCS bowl game if they were in a tougher conference.
As a Ute fan I admittedly "get it" now and I'm fine with it. I'd rather lose to tough teams every year with the hope of breaking through someday then go back to having your ranking in question because you didn't play anyone.
It's nice to be in a real conference now.

I would suggest reading comprehension or consulting a dictionary for definition of "dregs". MiP didn't refute a single word of my post:

"Texas is #8 in the country now? dang.......guess I missed that one........"

Then you don't know as much about college football as you pretend to know.

According to Sagarin, the same rankings being cited by Utah fans for Utah and all of the other PAC 12 teams, Texas is ranked #8.

But before you through a temper tantrum and claim that the Sagarin ratings are "meaningless", just remember that, unlike the AP poll, which Utah fans are fond of citing, even though it's not in any way associated with the BCS, the Sagarin ratings will be utilized by the Bowl Championship Series to help determine the two teams who will play in the BCS championship game.

Wait, losing a game to a team that used several QBs while struggling in early season to find it's way is more impressive than 54-10 on your rival's proud field? Or was Utah's close loss at USC more impressive in your book? I guess you are what they call a kool-aid drinker.

  • Mormon Ute Kaysville, UT
    Nov. 7, 2011 12:56 p.m.

    TJ,

The good news is the Utes will be better prepared next year, after the experience of going through this year and shoring up some weak spots with new recruits. Also, Kosta Fesenko is right, the Utes don't play Stanford and Oregon next year. The Pac 12 schedule changes every two years, not every year. I just checked the Utes web site to confirm this. So we will have the same conference opponents next year that we had this year. That also should help the Utes get their legs under them.

  • Thlete Draper, UT
    Nov. 7, 2011 1:17 p.m.

    @Mormon Ute,

Next year could be special for the Utes if they can get the QB situation solidified. Defense will be solid as always and the amount of 1st round NFL QBs the Utes face will shrink next year, too. ASU with 6'8" Osweiller still around will be the toughest road game, though.

@Skywalker: There are no moral victories in D1 football. A loss to Texas is a loss, and a Utes loss to USC is a loss, no moral victory from that loss either. Saying otherwise is ridiculous.

In all honesty, is anyone else sick and tired of both fan bases being so ridiculous to each other? I've never seen anything like it. No constructive criticism and the lack of giving credit where credit is due is ridiculous.

BYU: They have gotten much better since the Utah game, and Nelson is a gamer. Props to their defense for remaining consistent all year. BYU should win out. Hopefully they bring their A game to the Islands.

Utah: They're defense is legit. #1 in the Pac 12 is nothing to joke about. Hays has shown significant improvement. They CAN win out, whether or not they do remains to be seen.

Good to see the Utes looking so good. As for them winning the southern division championship, if they beat UCLA (as they should) that is entirely possible. I don't see them getting past either Stanford or Oregon, but winning the south ensures them better than the Vegas Bowl.

I'm just a little curious about Chris B, though. He was on the thread for the USU over Hawaii article, making fun of the Aggies, but I haven't seen him here crowing about the win. Could it be that unless he has something negative, he doesn't speak (or write)?
