I hope they haven't almost reached their potential! That's not saying a whole lot to almost reach your potential after throttling an FCS team at home.

BYU better beat TCU or Cougar fans will never hear the end of the "the Big 12 took the better team" rants from the Ute trolls.

NOT happy to see Hoffman thinks BYU's potential has almost been reached.

Maybe BYU players can take a little umbrage at TCU's invite to help motivate themselves a little more. BYU certainly needs to bring its "A" game.

I'm glad Juice is healthy again. BYU will need its running game.

BYU's best chance in this game is playing keep-away from TCU. The longer our offense can keep TCU's high power offense off the field, the better. I think our defense will play well enough for us to win if we limit their time on the field and don't put them in bad situations. TCU is just that good on offense. Their running game is good, but what scares me even more are their big play receivers.

I think if BYU maintains their run-first approach and wears down on their defense, I like our chances. We have to be able to move the ball well through the air, though. Guys like Hoffman, Apo, and our TEs need to be playmakers at critical times. I think if we play well this one comes down to the end. I think if we win it might just even be by a field goal, but if I had to pick a favorite right now I would have to pick TCU with a final score being something like TCU 31, BYU 24. If we make enough plays and find a way to win the final score could be something like BYU 27, TCU 24.

    Attention all Ute trolls!

Since you are so big on the BCS, consider this.

The BCS poll came out. BYU is ranked #36 and Utah is ranked #55. BTW, SOS is part of the BCS ranking calculations.

Sorry, but even with the loss to Utah, the BCS, at this point in time, considers BYU a stronger team than Utah.

Oregon State is ranked #95 in the BCS so the Utes should cream them by at least 2 or 3 touchdowns don't you think?

I'll be watching the Cougars on ESPN!! I hope Bronco has finally figured out a way to get the team "up" for this contest. I spent the funds to travel to Ft Worth two years ago and after their lack-luster performance I wanted to ask BYU for reimbursement of my expenses. (Of course that's happened with the Jazz many times, too.)

Seriously, if the Y wins on Friday and the U loses on Saturday, the Utah trolls will have nothing of merit to talk about (other than 54 - 10 and winning their "Bowl Game" in Provo on Sept 17th.)

But who knows what will happen-----that's why you lace 'em up and play 'em.
    Go COUGARS!!

With the cream puff schedule that B.Y.U. has the rest of the season, it had better have a good showing against T.C.U.. B.Y.U. should fair much better than in the last few years against the Horned Frogs.

This is the one game, as far as I'm concern, that will wipe away the bitter taste of the embarrassment of that debacle against Utah if we win. Short of that, I'm afraid we're still going to be looked at with little to no respect by many. 54-10 is still very painful to remember.

    Go Cougs!

  • DRay Roy, UT
    Oct. 24, 2011 6:09 a.m.

This next game will be low-scoring, a defensive battle, the win going to the team that has the greatest will to win. We saw both teams score a ton of points Saturday, and often the next game the offense comes out a little flat, and add to that the strength of their defensive game, I think that is easier to sustain...

Once again turnovers will play a huge part, and special teams as well...BYU 17, TCU 13 is my prediction...

  • Weber State Graduate Clearfield, UT
    Oct. 24, 2011 6:34 a.m.

Nothing I'd like better than to see BYU give TCU an old fashion Texas beat down. However, no matter how much Cougar fans wish it...it just aint gonna happen. Reality needs to set in...BYU simply doesnt have the pass defense to stay with TCU. Im afraid its gonna be a long afternoon for Cougar fans. On the bright side, the BYU offense should score a few points now that 3-n-out Heaps is on the bench. Good kid, but over hyped.

  • CougFaninTX Frisco, TX
    Oct. 24, 2011 7:07 a.m.

Nelson is playing well enough to deliver a W, if the offense has no turnovers or maybe one turnover if it's not in a key situation.

It still feels like we have some work to do to reach our potential as a team, but Hoffman certainly seems to be playing up to his potential.

I'm hoping we'll see Fangupo and Fuga back in the line up, and they are recovered to near 100%.

  • chubbuckidahocougfan Chubbuck, Idaho
    Oct. 24, 2011 7:16 a.m.

"we have almost reached our potential"?? Someone needs to put a muzzle on Hoffman. If almost reaching our potential is dominating ISU, then maybe they should join the Big Sky Conference and compete against the Montana Grizzlies year in and year out for the conference championship. Hoffman-reaching potential at BYU would mean going to a BCS game like TCU, BSU, and Utah have already done and then winning that BCS game. I'm beginning to wonder if the coaches philsophies and comments the coaches make to the players have anything to do with these comments these players make about reaching potential at 6-2 and they still haven't beat a team with a winning record all season. Let's all aim for higher goals-this includes coaches, players, admin....I know I'm probably one of those unrealistic delusional Cougar fans, but I don't see why they can't compete on a national level with the team up northwest of them..I'm not talking about the Utes...talking about the BSU team

This will be a week of suspense. Friday night football with a chance against TCU, a quality program. Getting a win would be great.

And... let's not forget Saturday. Will the Utes fold or finally get their first win in their precious conference?

I am looking forward to driving the 3 hr. drive from Norman OK to Dallas Cowboys Stadium this Friday! I am a little nervous as TCU has had BYU's number as of late, but I will be happy if BYU makes it a game. A win would be spectacular but we shouldn't get too ahead of ourselves BYU fans, we're improving yes, but against inferior talent. TCU is not inferior talent. It will take BYU's very best performance on both sides of the ball.... Go Cougars!!!

If BYU win this Friday with Nelson, and if he put up another stellar performance and still not be named the permanent starter for the rest of the year, then I would seriously question Bronco's fairness as a coach. Frankly though, considering the way they man handled us the last couple of years, I'm not very optimistic about our chances. Even so, I still hope we'll put up a solid performance good enough to win. If that happen, it would be so awesome! Go Cougs!

chubbuckidahocougfan: While I respect BSU a great deal and hope they get a chance to play for a national title (sorry, ain't going to happen this year either}, The reason the BCS was created (Thanks to BYU in 1984) was to keep wantabees out of the NT. Playing in the WAC and now in the very depleated MWC against cupcakes will not get it done. BYU, Utah-gone, TCU unranked this year.

And joining the Big East will be a step down. The Big "Least" was bad before they lost Pitt, Syracuse and now West Verginia; Wouldn't be ironic if BSU joined and the big least lost it's BCS status?

Your broncos will get the chance to prove they are better then BYU next year, til then, it would be wise to be the silent majority.

"Over the past five weeks, BYU revamped its offense and won five consecutive games" .... against less than stellar teams. So, let's not get too carried away. Big Cougs fan here and happy with the wins; however, the schedule is what the schedule is. We're bowl eligible, which is a biggie. The TCU is THE measuring stick for the team thus far this season. Let's go Cougs.

    @ SoCalTrueBlue

You miss the irony of the fact that Utah can have a "bad game" (losing to UW) but BYU must just be crummy (according to the Ute trolls) so a few Cougar fans are just trying to let Utah revel in the 54 - 10 because that's all they have to crow about this year. Yes, we lost, but we gave it away. On any given day, your team may have a bad game. On the other hand, Utah is having a bad season. They're as far from going to the Rose Bowl as possible right now. And maybe they won't be going to any bowl except Provo and Rancho Lanes. So tell me---who really is the "crummy" team?

I think we ought to drop Utah and let them play Utah State again, the true rivalry from a by-gone era. We don't need the Utes and they have assured us they don't need us. So wave goodbye to them.

100% agree with other Cougar fans that the next game is without a doubt the most important game of the season. BYU has yet to beat a team with a winning record so far this season, and the smell of the 54-10 debacle against Utah still lingers heavily in the air of Cougar Nation. Beating TCU, a team that has absolutely owned BYU the last 3 years, would go a long way to help clear the air of the shameful loss to Utah, especially since TCU has owned Utah the last two years as well. And then there is the Big 12 situation. TCU just got the invitation that Cougar fans were hoping would come to BYU, and Holmoe says that talks with the Big 12 are ongoing. If that is true BYU needs to step up and show the Big 12 they are the better overall program, both in terms of revenue and fanbase, as well as on the field competitiveness. Forget the Armed Forces Bowl. This Friday BYU will be playing on the big stage, under the bright lights of Cowboy Stadium. This is their real bowl game. They must represent! GO COUGARS!

TCU is not the dominant team of the past three years, but they are still very good. If a playoff had existed last year, I think TCU would have won the NC.

    Keys to the game.

OL must control the line of scrimmage, opening holes for the running game and giving Nelson time to throw.

    No turnovers.

Secondary must keep the ball in front of them and not get beat deep.

Both TCU and BYU are now listed in the "others receiving votes" on both polls. The winner likely jumps into the Top 25. This should be a great game!

  • MiP Iowa City, IA
    Oct. 24, 2011 10:12 a.m.

    Can BYU measure up?
    Yes.

But statistically this will be a tough game.

    BYU 6-2
    TCU 5-2

BYU, zero wins against a team with a winning record (0-1 v Texas).
TCU, two wins against teams with winning records (2-2, port st./SDSU).

BYU 72nd in points for, 32nd in points against.
TCU 8th in points for, 35th in points against.

It should be a much better game than the last three between these two teams. Good luck, cougars!

The question is can TCU stop the run and can BYU run on TCU? BYU is now a running team that sprinkles in the pass from time to time which is far different from what it used to be in years past. It is one thing to run against Utah State, San Jose and Idaho but TCU has athletes so we will see if the QB switch and pass to run switch works.

Hey all of my fellow BYU fans....don't you think it is a little sophomoric, at best, to say anything about Utah? I mean, regardless of the current teams' records, and regardless of how the game went and the turnovers, etc., etc., the fact is, they came into LES and put a beat down on BYU that is one of the most lopsided losses in the history of the rivalry. Until next year when BYU can return the favor at RES, let's just sit down, be quiet, take it like a man, and show some class. There is really nothing BYU fans can say, which is also true for Utah fans, so let's just keep it to ourselves and hopefully BYU can get after TCU and that crazed, hyper-obsessed coach of theirs and post a great win this year.

BYU has won both their Friday night games on ESPN. BYU gets a third shot now! It's pretty special to be on ESPN on Friday night, now BYU gets to be on a third time. I think this is part of the exposure BYU is wanting.

Don't let Patterson's "I'm going to go home and watch BYU now" fool anyone. We know he has admitted to preparing all year for BYU in years past. I'm sure he's already been preparing this year. TCU is weak in many areas. I hope BYU has been following them all year because you can be certain TCU has been following BYU.

TCU has already fallen to its rivals Baylor and SMU, both who totally hate TCU. Wouldn't it be great for BYU to beat the team TCU absolutely hates!!? I'm not counting on it, but I just hope Bronco finally prepares his team.

BYU did a great job against them last year until Heaps let TCU into the game. Without Heaps, BYU stands a great chance this year, and it's at a place BYU already knocked off #3 Oklahoma. There is always hope!

As the season progresses, it's becoming glaringly obvious that 54-10 was an anomaly and not a true representation of the strength of the two programs involved. I know Ute fans will be the last to admit that and I don't really blame them. They've got bragging rights for 364 long days and we Cougar fans have to just take it. Whoops...I meant to say "Amusingly". Oh well. Continuing along...

The unwanted Indy-WACers must now throw ANOTHER tantrum since Boise State - a team even FURTHER West than Provo - has been offered a spot in the Big East. Air Force too. However, I'm not sure really how Holmoe plans to overreact THIS time since they're ALREADY all alone. The Pac-12 doesn't want them. Neither does the B1G. The Big East and the Big XII have had AMPLE time to invite them, but have demonstrated no desire to do so either. There's NO WAY the MWC would take them back now, and they're ALREADY honorary members of the WAC.

Just out of sheer morbid curiosity, I can't wait to see what the Y will do NOW!

  • Naval Vet Philadelphia, PA
    Oct. 24, 2011 12:43 p.m.

    giantfan:

Utah's 54-10 LES victory was NOT anomal. It was "Ute DOMINATION"! Don't forget...the cougars struggled mightily against Ole' Miss, UCF, AND Utah State. Your recent success is nothing more than a lighter load of pathetic teams.

Cougar fans who think their glossy 6-2 record [as opposed to Utah's 3-4] supports the frantic and emotional notion that they are the better team must somehow come to terms that the the verdict of who is the better team has already been rendered to the tune of "54-10"!

    HUGE Edge: Utah.

Cougar fans who would like to fantasize that the current iteration of their program would somehow reverse last month's outcome should the Utes and cougars meet again this season are merely only boasting, "We can beat you guys....just as long as the game is at LES, you guys are starting your BACKUP quarterback, and Chad Bunn maintains full reign over the replay booth." Of course cougar fans who want to pretend THAT would also have to develop a case of selective amnesia, and forget that Nelson played in the last Holy War too.

Too bad cougs. 54-10! See your WACkey team next year.

  • patriot Cedar Hills, UT
    Oct. 24, 2011 1:07 p.m.

one thing is for sure - BYU can't throw down field anymore so defending them is pretty simple - just play tight man defense with your corners and force Nelson to make plays in the air. If TCU shuts BYU's run game down by bringing 7 guys regularly and plays tight man defense on BYU's receivers this is going to be a massacre for TCU. When a team like TCU brings 7 guys the ONLY way to beat them is by making big plays down field in the air. You have to force a defense to respect you down field so they can't just bring the house on every play.

    Re: Naval Vet,

Wow, you had better hope Utah cleans up this weekend against Oregon State because if they were to lose, wouldn't you look foolish. But of course I don't expect common sense and reason to rule the day and have Utah fans admit to anomalous circumstances concerning BYU if Utah manages to go 0-5 in their Pac-12 debut. That would be so contrary to character.

  • giantfan Farmington, UT
    Oct. 24, 2011 1:17 p.m.

    Naval Vet,

Or maybe I can put it into simpler terms for you: If Utah is really 44 points better than BYU at LES, and BYU is 10 points better than Oregon State in Corvallis, then what should the spread be for OSU at Utah? If home field advantage is worth 3 pts, then 44 + 3 + 10 + 3 = 60. Anything less than an eight touchdown victory for Utah should be a disappointment and would pretty much blow your statement against anomalies out of the water.

P.S. I never said or even insinutated that BYU was the better team. I, like every other BYU fan out there, know that the game played on Sept. 17 was not indicative of how the 99 out of 100 other games played against these same two teams would turn out.

  • BlueHusky Mission Viejo, CA

I expect BYU to beat TCU this year. Cougar defense was good enough to win last year. TCU is not as good as last year. BYU is better - now. But if Nelson gets hurt, all bets are off. We're dead with young Heaps at the controls. He's just not ready.

    RE Utah (for the trolls):
Utah beat no good teams last year, including BYU. BYU was not good last year. Utah as beaten no good teams this year. Including BYU. So, trolls, take what solace you can in the 54-10 debacle. The way things are going, I don't see Utah beating any PAC12 team this year. They're nosediving just like Heaps was before he was benched. Nelson rescued the Cougars. But I don't see how Utah turns it around this year. They really look pathetic and have no QB.

Oregon State wins in a walk this week.

I'm a BYU fan and I have to say this is the dumbest post I have read in a long time. How does strength of schedule have anything to do with the record of teams being played? So if I play all of the teams in the WAC and Florida plays all of the teams in the SEC, but the WAC teams have a better cumulative winning percentage than the SEC teams, the WAC teams are better?

This is what gives BYU fans a bad name so please stop. If you want to look at strength of schedule, do a little research.

This 5 game win streak seems very hollow. BYU has yet to defeat a team with a winning record this season. I see them going 8-4, losing to TCU then likely losing to Hawaii. Note: I'm a HUGE BYU fan but a realistic one.

Please wake me up when the Big 12 announces that we are in the Big 12 - till then, me, with many BYU faithful will just yawn at any other developments or wins that BYU football brings this season.

  • Y Grad / Y Dad Richland, WA

Since Big 12 is not ENTIRELY off subject, and appears to have both fans AND trolls on both sides of the issue, may I pose a question: What would be wrong with establishing a contractual affiliation instead of full-blown membership? We could maintain independence while creating a source for late season games, we could keep the ESPN contract and expand exposure for both BYU and it's Big 12 opponents without damaging either Fox or ESPN.

BYU could share revenue (because it's all about exposure, right) and at the end of, say three years, if either party isn't happy, they just don't renew the agreement. Just a thought...

By the way, I thought I'd heard that TCU's pass defense was a little porous. Well that sounds familiar. I pick a shoot-out, and if BYU can avoid blinking this time, maybe even the last team with the ball wins. I say BYU low 40 something, TCU high 30 something, and Riley goes from "the other" qb to legend.

Just a comment, as I am a fan of both BYU and Utah, and don't really care about the rivalry, but on the first page alone, there were at least 6 mentions of "Ute Trolls" without any of them even commenting. I don't believe in the whole big brother/little brother jargon, but it seems like BYU fans are a little worried about shutting up fans of a team that is their "little brother." Get over it and cheer for your team. Utah and BYU played more than a month ago. Just my two cents.

    Naval Vet

I love how your hate for BYU won't allow you to have a rational thought.

In what world is 3-4 better than 6-2?

It is shake my head with incredulity bizarre that you, who claims that BYU is insignificant, so much beneath you, and totally irrelevant, yet , you have something to say on just about every article. You just can't leave BYU alone.

Admit it, you are obsessed and in love.

And no. I don't care about the u irregardless of what you think you understand. Two BCS wins? Really, oh wow, be still, that's amazing. 13 other schools have 2 or more BCS wins and I guarantee that none of them wear it as a banner as much as you. And before you tell me it is better than BYU, think. There are only a couple of awards each year for NCAA football that transverses the seasons and is remembered every year (hint it ain't BCS bowls). Which begs, what have u done lately?

And before you bring up 54-10, I can easily turn to my other Alma Mater and tell you we beat you 35-14, at your house.

@navel vet. You're "missing the boat," again! Are you not aware that "curiosity (whether sheer or not) killed the cat" - and the vet? That, was a "morbid" sight. All of your "mumbo-jumbo" arguments "does not hold water." Whatever BYU does, is what is really important! (To them, and us, as fans - only.) Not your "wish it were true," selective speculations. My gosh, get a life - lifer! I just can't believe that you would spend so much time "wishin and hopin" that BYU doesn't get into a bcs conference. Let me clear some things up for you (and maybe some others). First of all, "your standards" and the "Y's Standards" are clearly two different things. What "they do" will not be gauged by what "you do, think, or say." Secondly, your insecurities are not being treated well by all of this. And, lastly, why is it necessary to keep using BYU against Utah (and vise versa) in order to make some point in these articles. Yes, Utah won this year and should be considered the better team until BYU wins. Beyond that, give it a rest - PLEASE!

@jenny083. It is interesting that you refer to your third opponents record above (@ 6-2) in trying to "make a case" for SOS. Isn't that 6-2 BYU's record, and wasn't the Y their third opponent? The reason I bring this up is I am just trying to figure out how this logic works. It seems somewhat bizarre that you did that, kind of a oxymoron.

Now, I don't bring this up as a personal hit against you. I know that there are "plenty" of others (Cougars fans included) that use this same sort of logic - in an attempt to prove their own point(s). But think about it before you do it again.

One more thing; it is about time for us all to stop trying to pit BYU against Utah (and vise versa). They are both excellent schools with wonderful tradition and we each need to start respecting one another more. One football game (per year, if it is not reduced) and one game (or two; depending upon each of the other sports) is sufficient time for us to enjoy some "classiness" and fun with each other! Thanks.

you keep bringing it up and it doesn't mean anything anymore. I guess if thats what you need to hang on to to make yourself feel better about your season go ahead. But i will say it again. BYU has beaten more pac 12 teams than utah has. Let it go. Everyone knows that "54-10" is a joke. Wake up and smell the bottom of the pac 12.

I'd like a do-over against Utah. We all know it would be a different story.

It probably would be a different story now with all the ute injuries. I would say we would win now say 45 to 10 rather then 54 to 10!

I have to laugh at the cougie logic lets bag on Utah a team that we lost to by 44 points at home lol!! Glad you have some confidence now that you pounded Idaho Jr. High on Saturday. Don't forget you have 0 wins agains a good team, 0 wins with a team with a winning record!! We at least beat pitt even with the injury bug a pitt team alot higher rated then any win the Y has this year. Continue with your logic though will see what your saying come Friday night about 9:00 P.M. after the last D1 worthy team you play this year!

You must be kidding, right? Byu fans can only dream about reaching what that little 'ole team from Idaho (Boise State) has already accomplished in the BCS era. And since the Broncos are 2-0 vs the Cougs I'd say it's still on BYU to demonstrate that they're in the same "league" as BSU football. BYU will get another chance on "the blue" next year. Make the best of it since the Broncos will be breaking in a new QB.

As a Cougar supporter, I feel a bit perplexed why Cougar fans would dismiss that 54-10 thumping. Sorry my brothers and sisters, it happened. Unless BYU actually beats TCU, its wins really don't mean anything. The Cougs have to prove they can beat a legit opponent with a winning record. We all know that BYU lost to a 3-4 team by over 40 points on its home field, now it's time to put up or shut up.

    Utah's opponents:

    USC: 6-1
    Washington 5-2
    Arizona State 5-2
    BYU 6-2
    Pitt 3-4
    Cal 4-3
    Montana State 7-1

    Overall 36-15

    BYU's opponents:

    Ole Miss 2-5
    Texas 4-2
    Utah 3-4
    UCF 3-4
    Utah State 2-5
    San Jose State 3-4
    Oregon State 2-5
    Idaho State 2-6

    Overall 21-35

Now I'm not going to say Utah is a good football team because they aren't. But I can't but think their schedule is much superior. I'm not sure BYU wins a single game against Utah's schedule and that includes Montana State, who played Utah much closer with Wynn as the Ute QB. I think BYU's best chance for a victory against teams Utah played would actually be Pitt because they did look horrible in their game against Utah.

This should be a great game. Riley will have a prime time national stage to showcase his talents and the intrique created by the BIG 12 snub makes it all the better. Go Cougars!!!

Look for TCU to sneak their linebackers up to 3-4 yards behind the line of scrimmage, constantly threatening blitz, but rarely doing so. They really will just be there to contain Nelson.

That will challenge Nelson to throw over a large offensive line on 10-15 yard throws behind the backers. TCU will almost completely give up the 25+ yard routes in order to effectively smother everything underneath, because it doesn't think Nelson can consistently make those deep throws.

BYU will struggle to rush the ball outside of Nelson's impromptu scrambles.

If Nelson can complete a couple of deep passes early, establishing an accurate pass threat to open up the running lanes (counter-intuitive), BYU's offense will score, its defense will remain rested, and BYU can hang in the game.

If Riley doesn't capitalize on those deep passes early, BYU goes 3 and out often, it's defense wears down, and TCU will roll.
