We'll get a better idea how good Hays is against Cal. Pitt is a weak team in
the weakest AQ conference. Cal is a weak team in a middling AQ conference, but
look like they are better than Pitt. Utah just needed solid defense
to get the win against Pitt. They will need solid defense and some offense to
get the win against Cal.A win against Cal, and U will be headed to
the Las Vegas or New Mexico bowl. A loss today, and U may be bowling at the
bowling alley in December.
The first comment on this article is by a jealous cougar fan. What a shock!Hey, cougfanintx, you need to worry more about your own compelling game
today against your high school competition. What an exciting slate of games in
store for you in these next few weeks. Idaho, Idaho State, New Mexico State,
the list goes on and on.Enjoy!
I agree with CFinTx, the Utes can not soley rely on defense to win this game.
However, if John White can have another 150+ yard game, that will go a long way
to ease offensice woes. I do disagree that a loss at Cal would mean the Utes
will not go to a bowl game, however. I am pretty convinced the Utes will win
thier remaining home games and become bowl eligible, with or without the win
today. Wins are always welcome though.Interestingly, the Utes are
3-0 against "big cats" beating Montana St. (Bobcats), BYU (Cougars),
and Pitt (Panthers). They still have Arizona (Wildcats) and Washington St.
(Cougars) on their schedule...To bad it's the bears today.Still:MY PREDICTION:Utah 16Cal 13
People can talk all they want about Utah's QB situation and make fun of Jon Hays
all they want, but can you even imagine this sort of position if you were Jon or
his family and the rollercoaster it would be?! In January, your greatest hopes
and expectations are first to compete for the starting job on a DII team, where
your greatest hopes would be to make the playoffs and play in games nobody 95%
of the country doesn't know about. Then, with your JUCO eligibility expired, you
probably consider your football career over when your new team disbands their
program. And suddenly, you're starting a Pac 12 game against your childhood
favorite team with your team's bowl eligibility hopes riding on your shoulders.
This is one of the coolest stories of rising to the top I've ever been able to
see as it is happening. Good for Jon, and Go Utes!
As good as Utah's defense is, the Utes can't rely on their defense to outscore
the opposition.Total Utah offense in the first half: 35 yards, 41
passings, -6 rushing, 2 turnovers; punt, punt, fumble, punt, punt, int, half.
>We'll get a better idea how good Hays is against Cal.Yep.
I wonder if he is still excited about it?
