Utah won! Thank you. Still a pathetic performance outside of the defense, which
was great.Offense was disjointed and special teams left nothing
special on the field except Coleman Peterson's FGs. Utah is
competing for the worst red zone offense in the country. The Utes
scored on a lucky deflection to Matthews outside the red zone, and Shelby got a
defensive TD. Other than that, Utah gets to the red zone four times and gets
three FGs.FGs are bad enough (no TDs), but the possession where they
failed to score was the worst red zone execution I have seen since Ron McBride.
Utah has the ball at the Pitt 3 yard line with about 6 minutes to
go. The Utes are up 19-14, have 2nd and 1, and can ice the game with 3 yards.
Getting one yard on second down would have giving the Utes first and goal from
the 2 yard line. What do the Utes do? Get a false start, take a sack, get a
personal foul, and get negative 33 yards. So now they are out of FG range. At
least they can punt. Oops, they botched that. Negative 48 yards total!
John White IV was fantastic today. Although he has had good games and a few not
so good games this year, the little guy always runs with heart and desire. Here is my concern. 36 carries by White is to many. They have to find
room for Langi or Palermo in the run game. With Hays at QB, Utah has
to take the pressure off by running the ball. The production by White thus far
is not what concerns me. It's wear and tear on the body of a running back with
to heavy a load. Whittingham did it to Asiata a few years back. By mid season,
his body had nothing left.If John White gets hurt like Asiata did,
the Utes will have no offensive firepower left. White is our only offensive
punch. Devonte Christopher is out with the ankle and Jordan Wynn is far away in
Shoulderville. Whittingham needs to take the pressure off of
White.Question me if you will, but I am afraid John White won't
survive without help. 36 carries is to many.
"They dominated us defensively and took Ray away," said Pitt coach
Todd Graham. "They were dominating the line of scrimmage up front."===The ESPN talking head after the game who apologized to
the fans for wasting their time with this game had it wrong.Watching
a defensive unit imposing their "will" on a game, and delivering the W
was really a thing of beauty to watch.Just remember that 12 ugly
wins will get you a pretty good ranking.Congrats to the team for
getting the win. Now, let's focus on getting some wins in the PAC.
Just two games back from playing for PAC 12 title and rose bowl! Being in a
bcs league is a beautiful thing.
1/3 of P12 teams are winless in conference play.1/3 of SEC teams are
winless in conference play.1/4 of B1G teams are winless in conference
play.1/5 of B12 teams are winless in conference play. That's
life in a BCS league.
UNfortunately, SoonerUte, that means Utah is in the bottom 1/3 of the PAC.
Hopefully, their defense can continue to do well in leiu of their offensive
woes, particularly in the red zone and on third downs. Here's what I
can see: when Utah has faced a solid RB, but a weak QB, they have found success.
They've been able to focus on the one and make the other beat them.
Unfortunately, this year they've faced some decent QBs (Barkley, Price,
Osweiller) as they did last year (Moore and Dalton). Unfortunately,
most of the remaining PAC-12 teams on the Utes schedule are pass happy teams,
and most rank upward of 100th in rushing (esception UCLA). Look at Arizona
(Foles). As bad as they are, they are 3rd in passing yards. Even the woesome
Buffaloes are 44th in the FBS in passing yards (Utah is 84th, by comparison).
So I think it's safe to say the Utes will continue to shut down the
running game, but it having the kind of impact it had last Saturday is doubtful.
They'll have to step it up somewhere else too. My hope is, Hays and a power
running game will develop.
If we can continue to cause 3rd and long situations, I like our chances against
the pass on D. We shut down UW in the first half. The only time they moved the
ball was because of two senseless penalties from us, and that only resulted in a
FG. The second half was a different story with Polk running wild and kept us
guessing and guessing wrong. Our defense needs to realize that first down is the
time to make a statement and make things easy on themselves. You control first
down, in most cases you control that possession. Hopefully that clicked with
them this weekend and will continue into conference play.
If the defense can stay solid until the passing game catches up, we should have
good success the rest of the season. I'm not expecting all wins, but we should
finish with a winning record. 7-5 or 8-4.
