I have been saying this all week. Arizona State has a guaranteed loss against
Oregon next week. That means if we beat ASU, which I believe we will, we
control our own destiny to the Pac 12 championship game. Everyone agrees only
Utah and ASU have a chance to win the division. When we beat ASU, we
hold the tiebreaker over them as clearly Oregon will steamroll them. We still
control our fate. It still could be a very Rosey year. Hayes will "rise
up" with Chow showing him how.
I'm looking forward to the game Saturday. The Vegas odds makers have us only a
3 point underdog. I know that's not always the predictor of success, but it
gives me some hope. If Coach Chow can tailor the offense to Jon Hays skills, I
think we'll do fine. Time to dig deep and gut it out.
Utah at 0 - 2 in the PAC 12 is where Larry Scott thought they would be when he
required them to play this season for nothing. Come on Utes. Come on Kyle. Prove
to Larry that he was wrong. Learn from the legend down South and turn this
season around like Bronco did last year and is doing again this year. Prove to
the PAC 12 that you are worth more than you are being paid to play this year
which is nothing. Come on Utes....Come on!Yes you can. Yes you can. Follow
Bronco's example and you will have a win in the can
It's do or die time this week. If we win, we're right back in it. If we lose,
it's the end of any hope of a conference championship this season.Honestly, my biggest fear is of a conference win becoming a monkey on our
back. Even if we lose this week, we need to keep battling to get that monkey off
before if turns into a 500 lb. gorilla and we miss out on a bowl this year. That said, I have a surprising amount of confidence in John Hays. At the
beginning of the year I thought if Jordan were to go down, we'd be finished.
Now, after seeing John play against BYU and UW, I have some hope that he can
come in and perform well enough after a week of preparation to get a win.Go Utes!
I'm a realist and I'm looking from a neutral standpoint, the Utes are out. They're not going to beat ASU, and with that loss, that will be their
nail in the coffin for them in the Pac 12 this season. They're not beating Cal,
Washingston State, Arizona or UCLA either.
it ain't over 'til it's over
Give it a week or two and it'll be over for the season. Next question is will
they remain bowl eligible?
"Turn out the lights the party's over".AA this before it
ever got started.
I've been reading for 1 year from Ute fans how the Utes had a cakewalk in their
mind to the championship game. What's happening?
I believe there's a lot of people in the state of Utah that hasn't been living
in reality this year.
Well the pac10 is not all that good so if the utes cannot win the south division
that says alot about the state of their program. Looking at the games they have
left asu is about the only one that is even semi formidible. But that doesn't
mean the utes are going to win any of the other ones because they are just one
more of peice of the mediocre whole that is that pac10.I predicted
5-7 wins going in and they will be hard pressed to get to 7. 5 is far more
"Well the pac10 is not all that good so if the utes cannot win the south
division that says alot about the state of their program."The
bigger question is, what does that say about a program that loses to utah, at
home, by 44 points?
Well, if Chow can get Hayes up to speed and Oregon beats ASU, and Utah wins the
rest of their games, and then gets the tie-breaker, and if Jupiter aligns with
Mars, and....ASU 38Utah 10
If the Utes win the next two, ASU loses the next two, both win out after that
and the Utes are tied but own the tie-breaker. That's reality. Saturday is the
first big "IF."
Utah will win the PAC 12 south division in our FIRST year and battle with Oregon
for the FIRST PAC 12 championship. I admit we got lucky avoiding stanford and
Oregon this first year. Pasadena here we come!
Stick a fork in the Utes - they're done.
Uhmm, yah it's pretty much over. ute lineman are going to have to hold, grab and
tackle ASU d-line to give Hays even a small chance for success. Flags are going
to fly like crazy on Sat. There will be a lot of stretched jerseys.
Chaz Walker had a major Freudian slip when he said it would take a top-notch
effort to get "thongs" done. Or the writer gets a "D" on
this paper for his lack of proofreading. Funny stuff, though. On
the topic, the Utes are showing mediocrity like every other team in Utah.
Previous teams would have shown better in the PAC-12, but they are down a bit
this year. It happens to ALL teams. Case in point--Texas has a 5-7 year last
year, surprising everyone. The real challenge for Utah going forward is
recruiting. It is doubtful in my mind that being in the PAC-12 will instantly
boost recruiting to the level they need. It may never happen. BYU has problems
recruiting to Provo and the honor code. Utah has the same problem on a smaller
scale. I would love to see the Utes be a force in the conference, but I predict
they will compete for the PAC-12 championship every 5 years.
Utes still not out of conference race . . . yet.
"This is a competitive league. Every week is going to be like this,"
Whittingham said. "I don't know if people thought we were going to come in
and take the Pac-12 by storm and just walk through it. That's not
reality."Yes, they did. Now, not so much. Just a few dreamers
hanging on.Welcome to the new reality. Welcome to the PAC 10.2.
I wish that BYU was as good as the Utes......unfortunately, we just aren't.
Frankly, the Utes are so superior that we should have to play at RES 4 times for
every time they come to our humble abode in provo.
crisb;Delusional thinking my friend. The Utes hopes of winning the South
division died last Saturday with the loss to UW. This Saturday is merely a
formality for ASU. Utah will be very fortunate to even be bowl eligible, let
alone play in the conference championship. They have to win 5 more games and
they have lost to two middle of the PAC teams already. Losses to ASU and PITT
will put them at 2-4. They will be lucky to beat Cal to finish with 6 D1 wins IF
they don't lose to WSU or one of the other PAC patsies.I was pulling for
them to win the South but it ain't gonna happen this year.

from a fan. Will a conference invite ever arrive for BYU?
Chris B. The only time the Utes will play in Pasadena during the next 20 years
is when they are the visiting team versus UCLA.
That was a pathetic attempt at humor fake duckhunterr.Reality is
going to set in for Utah fans this week.I thought they would have a
decent chance to make some noise this year.I was very wrong.
The Utes had the easiest road to the Rose Bowl that any team has ever had...Key PAC-12 programs are historically weak this year, and Utah looks like
it will cede the Rose Bowl to another mediocre PAC-12 team.I hope
the Utes can win this week and keep their Rose Bowl hopes alive. I am afraid,
however, that this is simply seeing with rose colored glasses.
Wow....I leave this thread for an hour and I come back to find that the usual
trolls are out and about. Most of you promised that you would enjoy
Sep. 17. Makes me laugh that you didn't learn your lesson then. Utah is going to be fine. This game will tell us a lot though.Check your math TJ, Utes only need 4 more wins to get bowl eligible. Wins
count no matter what.
So much for the utes winning the pac 10.2.Oh the dreams of playing
in the Rose Bowl and then the National Championship so that they can be like
their big brothers.Hey utes, it's time to wake up and go to school.
Get up off your mothers couch and tidy up your little space and thumb a ride to
the elementary school.
@kosta fesenko aka "duckhunterr", "officer coolguy",
"articuno BYU", "duckhunter hunter", etc."Wow....I leave this thread for an hour and I come back to find that the
usual trolls are out and about"I love it when you whine about
other posters being trolls LOL! Especialy considering how many screen names you
have and the fact that even your statement above is a lie since you posted as
"duckhunterr" during that hour you lied about "being
The only silver lining for the Utes is that they don't have to play Oregon and
Stanford this year, or it could get really ugly. They will not only lose
to ASU, but to Cal and UCLA. They do get to play Washington State and Arizona
who are bad. So when it's all said and done, the Utes will end up in the middle
of the pack.
"Utes still not out of conference race"Yet.......
It's kind of funny what people will resort to after getting absolutely pounded
by their rivals by 44 points, at home nonetheless. It's like "Hey, our team
sucks so bad that we're going to give up on them and just hope that our rivals
lose too so that we can have at least one thing to be happy about this
season." I guess that's all that's left to do when your remaining home
schedule is San Jose State, Idaho, Idaho State, and New Mexico State.
Come on now. It could happen. Utah could win its next 8 games, win the
conference championship and play for a national title. Really though what are
the chances. Get real and get ready for a beat down against ASU.ASU
Cougar fan here hoping the Utes beat ASU. It ain't over till it's over and
we'll find out this weekend. GO UTES!
@Duckhunterthats a nice theory, but sad to say i am not any of those
other users. I have been a member of the Des News for about two months. Before
that, I just read the stories. Not sure how you can link me to those other
people, the only one i have ever seen is duckhunterr..
@Montana MormonHow's BYU's conference race going? You guys going to
hang a banner that says "2011 Provo Independent Conference Champions"?
The game plan for ASU is simple. Pressure Utah's new and very inexperienced QB
by blitzes and constant, varying defensive looks, get your DB's in situations
similar to where he was picked off vs. Washington, and don't give up the big
plays. Utah's running game has looked terrible, so they'll have to hope that
continues.Utah needs wondrous things to happen on defense and
special teams if they want a chance in this game. Tricks plays and successful
fakes are also crucial. They have these in the playbook, and they'll probably
have to bring them out.ASU knows if they win this game, it's between
them and UCLA for the title.
@Brave Sir Robin:Nope!!
The Utes have as much of chance of going to the Rose Bowl this years as does
BYU. The Utws and the Cougars are both a sad bunch this year. Go fishin for your
entertainment they are a bitten at the berry.
Whit said that the winner of the South won't have three conference losses...it
sounds like he already agrees that the Utes are out of it...there is no way that
the Utes win all seven of their remaining PAC 10.2 games. But don't worry, the
Las Vegas bowl is still a worthy goal. I for one hope you achieve it.
A lot of BYU fans minimizing the Utah progam on here because of losses to USC on
the road and Washington at home. The sky is not yet falling for me or for Ute
fans. The bigger question is why do BYU fans want the sky to fall so badly? If
Utah's program is really in shambles as much as BYU fans on here seem to
insinuate, then where is the BYU program that got embarassed by Utah by 44
points in their own stadium? I don't see the Utes in the
championship game this season. Next year will be the year they compete, with
Jordan Wynn as a senior and all of the skill positions back. They have very few
seniors starting this year, so that should help their cause next year. That
said, there are scenerios where the Utes could be there....its not out of the
realm of possibilities. In contrast, there are no scenarios where BYU
is in a championship game....none at all. And if they lose, at least we get to
see them lose to ASU rather than to an Idaho State team.
Love the chatter from the haters watching the big boys play football from the
sidelines. Clearly that 44 point lesson we taught you still stings. Your season
is over, but at least you still have all that hate for our program to keep you
going!Welcome to our articles :)
Ute fans are absolutely delusional. You guys do realize that you have ZERO (0)
yes, NOT 1 Pac-12 win under your belts and you honestly are thinking about
playing for the Pac-12 title and Rose Bowl. I can't actually believe someone is
that irrational that this thought would even cross your mind.I am
still laughing right now.Las Vegas Bowl or bust!
The Utes have no shot at winning any division or championship this year. It's
all about recruiting. They simply don't have the horses, ponies, or doggies;
however you want put it. They do have a shot of winning the UCLA, Oregon State
and California games, but that is all. All you unrealistic fans need to come
back to reality. Go Utes.
ute4ever - problem is, u will lose most of the rest of your home games, while
the Y will not. I am glad u ponied up all that money to watch your Utes lose at
home so much. BYU lost as many home games as you will win at home this year. 1.
Too funny.Chris Hill Thanks you for your contribution to the first and
worst PAC 10.2 season for the Utes.
That is the right attitude. We get to watch our team lose to a higher quality
team. Just like a Utah ST. fan told me as we were walking out of LES last week.
She said "well at least we won most of the game." I almost fell down,
laughing so hard.
The way I see it, its all about wins and losses. Sure you guys are in the Pac12
and most BYU wish they were playing in a BCS conference, but what good does that
do when you cant compete? Looking back on history no one is ever
going to ask who the Utes played to go undefeated in '08, just like no one cares
who BYU lost to in a 7-6 '10 season. If you want to say "we
are playing high caliber opponents every week!" thats awesome for you, but
you still have to win. Justify it however you want, but a 6-6 season is still a
6-6 season no matter how you slice it.
By the way, if I were a Ute fan I would be extremely concerned for Saturdays
game. Because according to U, U have only played 2 quality opponents this
year....and lost both of them. I would consider ASU another quality
opponent. Not looking good for U.
@ Brave Sir Robin"How's BYU's conference race going? You guys
going to hang a banner that says "2011 Provo Independent Conference
Champions"? I noticed at the u that u have a banner bragging
about an undefeated season, but no National Championship. I know how much u like
banners, but maybe you should wait until u have a real NC to put up a banner.
Don't be so hung up by banners, if you want one that bad I guess you could make
one up like u did when u were trying to steal the show after an undefeated
season a few years ago. How did that work out for you. I was living in Big 12
country at the time and they all about laughed their heads off. As for me....I
just laughed along with them.
The sky is not falling. The odds are against the Utes. But, I
still believe in the coaching staff and the players will be able to pull through
this.Good luck, Jon Hays.Play your best.Don't turn
over.And....don't be a Jake!
There is no way the Utes are going to win the conference. The quarterback play
is not there, nor is the defense. We will be lucky to be bowl eligible. However, weeing what the team down south is going through, I'm just glad
we have a cellar to dwell in until this team gets healthier and stronger.
Do I detect sputtering engine sounds of a plane trying to get to Pasadena???This is a far cry from the hype of fans marching their team to the Rose
Bowl in its first year isn't it?Hilarious!
This is a big game:Ranked opponent.Chance to prove you belong.Chance to get back in the race.Chance to get back to a winning
record.Big Game. Hopefully, they can pull it off.Go
The staring safeties suck, put Blechen and Bird in. With the current line up we
will get beat every time. No chance of beating ASU or any other good team. Until
the coaches wise up we'll keep losing.
@D'anconia"weeing (sic) what the team down south is going
through... glad we have a cellar to dwell in..." What pray tell
is 'the team down south' going through as opposed to the train wreck in progress
at Uteville? You got a couple of things right... 'cellar to dwell in'
if the Utes don't post a win this next game and 'lucky' for a bowl game. Not
what the masses were predicting for the first year in the Pac 10.2 and
definitely not 'rosey'.Blame your recruiting staff, what a lousy
position to be in and it could have been mitigated. A simple spreadsheet would
have told a Mighty Mites coach that a good strong backup QB was needed on the
roster. If the Utes had a resilient and experienced QB, if, if,
if...Sorry Hays, not intending to slam you, but you have a big
opportunity here, from a no jc program situation in Nebraska to a rookie season
in a BCS conference, so good luck to you. You're going to need it.
@sammygYour team's problem is obvious. They're out in the cold and
nobody wants them. And this independence idea only works if you don't lose
football games. So unless BYU can figure out how to do something that it hasn't
been able to do since 1984, this independence thing is going to lead to one
irrelevant season after another. Many BYU fans have clued into this fact, hence
all the blue faces today. Enjoy the rest of your WAC-Lite cupcake
season. I'm almost curious myself to stay up REALLY late on Saturday to watch
Riley Nelson and company take on the powerhouse SJSU, with support from the
droopy-eyed boy on the sidelines.
We can all agree now...the Utes are NOT going to the PAC 10 Champions and will
NOT be going to the PAC 10 Championship. But...the Vegas bowl is looking for a
good match-up for BSU or TCU? Hopefully U get enough wins to qualify for that
