No atheist. In spite of what many people firmly believe and bore witness of, I remain unconvinced that the defeat took place. Or if it did, it was not concerned with me or me with it. Surely you,of all posters can understand that type of logic....

Spread is 13 for this one. Seems about right. Only team SJSU has really seen that has any decent defense is Stanford, and they only scored 3. On the other hand, teams can put up points vs. this defense. BYU will be fine. I'm sure the team will allow points and some yards, but BYU has stopped teams who appear potent on offense already (Texas, USU, UCF) and held them in check pretty well.

If this team only wins by a few points, they will officially be in trouble. However, the team SHOULD win by at least 20 or so.

Just like the good old days. All the utes have to hang on to is the fact that they beat BYU. Other than that game, their entire season is a bust.

Let me be very candid: any game on ESPN at any time on any day is infinitely better than a game on the MTN. For this case alone, independence is priceless.

Still pretending that anybody cares about a game that was given to U???

The truth is, BYU fans have already put that little turnover fiasco behind us and have moved on, but Utah fans still anguish over "Beck to Harline" and "4th and 18" years later.

I am glad that BYU is on TV. I do not care when or at what time. Cougars on TV is awesome for me and my friends in Alaska. On the other hand, the MTN I maybe got to watch one game a year. KSL streaming radio was as good as it was. Now the ESPN feed is live from where ever BYU plays and really fun to actually see a game. The close ones have been nail biters.

    Go Cougars.

Sounds like Mendenhall after the Utah-BYU game. If it just wasnt for turnovers, the outcome of the game may have been different.

Oh wait...that was Whittingham responding to the beatdown Washington put on Utah...my bad.

Riley says each game is going to be a dogfight. Four of your next opponents, all at home, had better not be dogfights, they are terrible teams. By the way San Jose State beat CSU at CSU, CSU beat USU in Logan. Don't overlook this team or you will be embarrassed. But you should be them easily.

"Just like the good old days. All the utes have to hang on to is the fact that they beat BYU."

That's an ironic comment coming from a modern-day BYU fan. Remind me again what you guys have left to play for? A conference championship? A national championship berth? A BCS game?

At least Utah still has a conference championship to play for (though it's a very long shot at this point). BYU's season is over - the best you can hope for is to get bowl eligible by feasting on cupcakes for the rest of the year, then meet a team like Iowa St. in a pre-Christmas bowl on some obscure channel.

So maybe you shouldn't talk about what various teams' fans are hanging on to. 4 games into the season, all BYU can hang onto is a last-second comeback over USU - hardly something to write home about, don't you think?

    Brave Sir Robin

Ah yes, the battle cry of the modern-day Utah fan, "Utah still has a conference championship to play for".

Tell me, why would fans of a program that's only won 6 conference championships in the last 60 years suddenly pretend that winning conference championships is something they care about?

Even wonderboy Whit has only managed to win one conference championship, half as many as Bronco.

btw, be careful about knocking the pre-Christmas bowls because that's where the Utes will more than likely end up this year, IF, they manage to become bowl eligible.

oh, and the Armed Forces Bowl is played December 30th and will be televised on ESPN.

If you're a Cougs fan, you have to love the nat'l attention. With the exception of Utah, all other games have been highly entertaining for a viewer stand point. As an out-of-state Cougs fan, I LOVE the ESPN HD telecasts and avoiding that sorry of a network known as the "MWC Network". On added bonus, to me, has also been the consistency of Joe Tessitore and Rod Gilmore, who become more familiar with the BYU players, coaches, etc. They've been a much stronger announcing team than anything I heard from the MWC Network. I'm loving the ESPN Contract. With that being said, I'll put up with the 8:15pm kick-off time on Saturday! :o) Go, Cougs!

  • IDC Boise, ID

Great games so far. I keep tabs on BSU and the games are usually pretty boring. BSU is very good but wondering if your team is going to win by 30 or 40 is not very exciting. Don't get me wrong, I wish BYU was blowing everyone out but these games are a lot more fun to watch. Go Cougars!

  • WA_Alum&Dad Marysville, WA

With any other teams playing, I enjoy a close thrilling game as much as the next guy. With my Cougs, the only games I enjoy are the boring ones where we crush the other team (and if the other team is wearing crimson, so much the better!).

That is the only way that BYU has ever received any credibility in a season: big wins over good opponents, and embarrassing wins over mediocre ones.

The close games have been entertaining, but I'd actually like to see a convincing win against a quality opponent. Don't have too many more quality opponents on the schedule.

I sure am thrilled that the Cougs are on the ESPN family. What a fine production especially when compared to the the MTN or whatever that high-school-level broadcast was called. Glad we are done with them.

And speaking of broadcast quality - - In my opinion there has been no comparison in quality between those provided by the ESPN family and the Utah games I have seen. Both the Utah @ USC and UW @ Utah productions (don't recall if they were both Fox Sports)were second rate compared to ESPN productions of the BYU games. Not only did the Utes play out of their heads @ BYU, but they also looked and sounded a lot better that night than their other couple of games. Not sure which are getting more $$ out of the deal, but the quality is sure one-sided.

3 times more fans watched BYU beat Utah State than watched BYU give a game away to Utah.

Obviously, the only ones who care about the Utes are the soon-to-be-shrinking group of kids on the hill. Utah fans will desert the Utah football program just like they did the Utah basketball program as soon as the Utes settle to the bottom of the PAC 12, which could be as early as this year.

Personally, I'd rather listen to Greg Wrubell call the game. ESPN does a much better job showing the game than the Mtn, but the commentators are lame! Perfect world? Watching on ESPN, while listening to the radio and Greg Wrubell!

BYU's "signature" for the 21st century is a VERY mediocre football program. The ESPN television ratings- have been atrocious and I believe ESPN will drop BYU for sure! This year's squad could easily be 0-5. BYU has been beyond lucky...;...and they were absolutely pounded by a rebuilding year Utah squad who has an injured quarterback. This week's game against SJSU is on ESPN U at 10:15pm est. Everyone will be asleep before that ridiculous contest starts. The OSU game is not being televised. With only the TCU and Hawaii games being televised for the remainder of the season, which BYU will lose both games big time, I loath the poor BYU fans that have to go and watch NMSU, ID, ISU games at LES........maybe BYU will win one of those games? Good luck!

  • MiP Iowa City, IA
    Oct. 5, 2011 10:04 p.m.

Big deal about a 8:15 start time. It's not that late. People will watch if they wanna see BYU, otherwise they won't care.

The real questions are: who is watching/What kind of ratings are these games getting? Will it be enough for ESPN to continue the contract?

Most casual fans turn off games that become blow-outs unless your team is the one getting blown out. Close games...people stay tuned. But still, interesting to see there are still Y fans insistant that BYU "gave the game away." They were all out blown out, dude. Reality.

    ArmChairQB...

While I didn't think the Utah-USC broadcast was poor, Joe Tessitore and Rod Gilmore are class acts. However, the crews that do ESPNU (Saturday's SJSU game) are not nearly as good (see also Duke vs FIU last week).

  • TaipeiModerate New Haven, CT
    Oct. 5, 2011 10:16 p.m.

    mgr63:

Its not good to lie. BYU's rankings have been great on ESPN. Their game against Texas was the highest-rated game of the week, almost twice as much as the next two college games combined. Last week's game against USU pulled in more viewers than the Fresno State Mississipi and Notre Dame-Purdue games combined. That is pretty striking, as BYU doesn't have an amazing record, the game was on a Friday night, and USU has the second smalled fan base in all of college football.

mrg63 why do you care? Or better yet, would you care to tell us why you hate so much. Do you feel better about yourself after you hit the "add you comment" button. If BYU is so irrelevant, why do you bother to beat the dead horse, so to speak. Every time you click on an article or post a comment you are bringing advertising revenue to BYU's "newspaper". Thanks for all you do.

  • mgr63 DALLAS, TX
    Oct. 6, 2011 8:14 p.m.

@Taipei, the UT vs BYU game had a rating of 1.7.......the 11th most watched game that week, probably because UT is very popular, not lowly BYU. I don't know where you are coming from? Good heavens! BYU's ESPN rating have been absolutely terrible. That is why the SJSU game is on ESPN U at 10pm est and the OSU game is not being televised. Also, I bet the NMSU, IU and ISU games will not be on tv either. BYU has been a "DUD" for ESPN this year......period, the end!
