Other than the 1st drive, the BYU D hasn't given up a drive over 36 yards. The offense needs to step it up. I'm thinking Brandon Doman might have been a mistake as the OC hire. He has, what, one year of coaching experience? Not enough for that job.

If I'm wrong? I'll be just fine with that. Prove it, Doman. Although it would help if he didn't have a receiver corps of stone hands. I thought Cahoun would fix that. I guess there is only one Ben Cahoun.

Boise State comes to the Mountain West and BYU can't run away fast enough. "independent is better for us" is the lame excuse.

    Comments by the Broadcast booth:
Joe Tessitore (former QB) Heaps is becoming careless and not taking the time to set up. Poor decisions.

Other Commentator: Poor tackling by BYU.

When Daniel Sorenson had to run down the receiver the replay showed clearly and was duly noted by the Commentators that both Sorenson and Eason were looking in the backfield and not paying attention to the potential receiver. Thanks to Sorensons's speed he was able to stop a TD. No sound fundmental football to have both BYU guys not paying attention to their position needs.

Defense kept us in the game and created turnovers, which we were able to capitalize on.

Way to go Justin Sorenson with your foot. Kicked the air out of the ball. Really pinned them back.

The one ref completely missed the Unsportsmanlike conduct on the out of bounds tackle right in front of him. Ref's need to be able to see what is happening in front of them.

Dear Dektol, apparently your are somewhat ignorant of why BYU is playing tonight. Tomorrow is the Annual Women's Conference and BYU has played on the Friday night before this conference for many, many years, so there will be no conflict with the sisters attending the conference. It will always be that way, just as they do not play on the first Saturday in October because of General conference. Please before you make such silly statements find out what is going on in life first.

Put in Lark for once. Heaps almost gave this game away again. He's the best player for the other team. I'm surprised that the defense doesn't just stack the box and take their chances with the pass. Heaps can't complete anything past 5 yards anyways, if that.... Pathetic

"If it wasn't for those turnovers this would have been a different game, UCF just gave away the game - sound familiar?"

No, it doesn't. BYU's offence had three unforced turnovers to go with four that were forced by Utah. Last week, for the first time, I saw BYU's defense quit.

Tonight, BYU's defense forced three turnovers. Bronco's defense saved the game and is several levels ahead of the offense. The runners and O-line pushed the team over the winning line.

  • Jake2010 bountiful, ut
    Sept. 23, 2011 9:37 p.m.

What turnover ever costs the other team anything? I find it hilarious to hear repeatedly free turnovers... Don't you mean free points? That is the only thing that happens is free points as a result of careless giveaways....

  • BYUfan777 Pleasant Grove, UT

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. BYU isn't going to beat anyone worth bragging about as long as Heaps is the quarterback. Barely beat a team that will likely have a 6 win season. What has to happen for Lark to have a shot at throwing the ball to the wide open receivers?

  • ReadytoRumble87 Pleasant Grove, UT

"Cougs beat a team better than the utes "

You didn't play Florida State you know...

BYU was outgained 399-260. They did get two offensive touchdowns (albeit with short field) and at least the running game existed this game. Fortunately the defense made the plays they needed, otherwise this could've easily been an overtime game.

  • Mitchell_12 Ogden, UT
    Sept. 23, 2011 9:41 p.m.

Hey Chrissy B, can you please hop on and tell us the outcome of this game again, I think I forgot. Didn't you say 31-10 Central Florida or something like that?. As for the BYU fans dying on this post about the offense, give it up, we won so lets go fight for another day. Time to worry about USU, this game is in the bag. Wow way to struggle to beat Central Florida. By the way Heaps is definitely not the man!! I'm sure the Aggies are licking their chops to prove last year wasn't a fluke. It's a good thing you have Idaho and San Jose on your schedule this year. Those two just might prove to be W's for you.

  • Kyle loves BYU/Jazz Provo, UT
    Sept. 23, 2011 10:02 p.m.

    My observations:

    1. Kyle van noy is a beast and plays his best when the game is on the line. Playmaker.

    2. A healthy Zed mendenhall makes a big difference in the run game.

    3. Heaps missed two easy touchdowns to DiLuigi and Jacobsen because he always throws bullets and hasn't learned when to throw a touch pass.

    4. Eason should not be starting. Sampson and Hadley are much better players. Let one of them play field corner.

I'll give the offense credit for 1 1/4 tds tonight. The other 1 3/4 goes to special teams. Big plays tonight. I loved watching Hoffman run one back tonight!

  • Tom in CA Vallejo, CA
    Sept. 23, 2011 10:02 p.m.

The Cougars won in spite of Heaps. He is not the real deal.
The Defense was very good, but not stellar. Van Noy is a play maker.
Why did Riley Nelson come in that first time?
    The kicking game was outstanding.
The O line was a little better, hence a better running game.
Good win, but nothing to gloat about, by any stretch.

Utah State will be licking their chops - better watch out.

Glad Doman was not on the sidelines tonight. He needs to use his tight ends more and he needs to understand where that first down marker is on third and long, but he'll get better. Might be a wise idea to start the former USU back up for next Friday's game. Heaps needs to mature, he needs to learn some more things about true leadership. Plus, I didnt care for some of the kid's media quotes this past week.

After last week's terrible (understatement) game, it's good to see the Cougars come back less than a week later and get the win. Still, there are lots of things to work on and we all know Utah State will be hungry to get the win in Provo next week.

I am sure that since he hates seeing BYU have success he will find some excuse as to why BYU won. The truth was that BYU made the plays to win tonight. In spite of great defensive plays that helped to win the game, BAD BRONCO!

He still plays vanilla defenses most of the game. Doesn't put pressure on QBs.

And when the 2nd string QB came in, Bronco gave him a pass, er, allowed him to pass. Heh.

Ridiculous vanilla defense for the fourth straight game against inexperienced or injured QBs.

BYU's QB in every game this year has gotten WAY more pressure than BYU's been giving the opposing QBs.

The few times BYU's bothered to put pressure on opposing QBs, it's generally been successful. So Bronco, whats wrong? Why be so nicey-nice to opposing QBs?

Seeing this game live really irked me when the defense kept skrewing up. You could see so many of the big plays coming that UCF made tonight.

And conversely, you could see so many of BYU's offensive plays were going to fail by the way UCF's defense was lining up.

Guess Doman upstairs didn't help, either.

Still, glad for the win against a pretty good team. Without the breaks for BYU, UCF would easily have won.

I think Worf is a Ute troll posing as a delusional BYU fan.

Heaps just does not have it. It is time to cut out losses and look at another QB. I am convinced more than ever now that he does not have the accurate arm that everyone has hyped about.

Our pass defense is showing a trend of vulnerability. Our D-backs are out of position a lot. Sorenson had a rough night. He is a great hitter and contains the run very well but his pass coverage is very suspect. He is more like a linebacker than a strong safety. More missed tackles tonight than previous games. Defense played well enough to win but not great.

We were lucky to win this game, but I'll take it.

    whatinitforme

i was listening to the game on the radio for the first half and wrubell said that sampson's sack in the first quarter was byu's first sack of the year. is that true? i took notice as the game rolled on that byu's defensed seems set up to stop the run. i don't know anywhere else you'll find defensive ends that weigh 300+ lbs. lack of linebacker blitzes adds into it as well, but even though byu plays the run pretty well i'd feel pretty comfortable passing on them all day (all except the last play of course).

I don't know Carson, a win is a win. I will take lucky and a win any day over a loss. The defense forced the turnovers. That just might have to be how it is played this year. I am not going to complain when we win. Why do that? I just hope the defense comes to play for the rest of our games because the offense is going to struggle. Who knows, we just might get lucky more often.

    @ worf

ok worf, you can pretend byu is a better team if it helps you feel better about yourself.

Seriously dude, when you get back to reality and leave the fantasy world your living in. You will see that Utah is a much better football team on both sides of the ball than byu. Your QB is pathetic and should be sitting on the bench. Doman is not an OC, he is just an Icon of a past byu QB. The best OC byu has ever had was Norm Chow (Now coaching at Utah).

Let me ask you this worf: you are claiming that Utah got lucky last week with 7 turnovers. Don't better football teams cause turnovers and capitalize on them? If you take out all of Utah's touchdowns that were direct results from a byu fumble (heaps first fumble, Riley fumble, and the kickoff return fumble). There are 33 points on the scoreboard unaccounted for. Explain to me how Utah scored 33 points?.............. Let me help you out on this one. Utah did it with their offence. Instead of making a fool out of yourself worf, just admit that Utah is the better team this year.

You are partly correct. BYU fans do live in denial about their team. Something wrong with that? Fan is short for fanatic. Being a fan is an escape from reality in what should be a small aspect of life. It is healthy. What is unhealthy is when someone cares that fans of another team support their own team. Haters are not happy because they can't stand seeing fans of a team they don't like enjoying any moment. It is unhealthy to live wishing for others to be unhappy.

I think that Bronco would be smart to tell everyone that every starting job is up for grabs and that whoever performs will start. That way if Heaps doesn't step it up, give it to Lark. I also think that David Foote should play more at RB. The guy is a stud. Did anyone else see how hard he ran on that 4th down option play?
The offense is also WAY too conservative. Enough of the 5 and out routes! There is nothing wrong with getting a first down on 1st or 2nd down! Every time we threw the ball over the middle we completed for big gains. Those are the throws that Heaps can make, so let him throw them. I hate how we have the ball and the lead late and we play not to lose instead of playing to win. We go 3 and out and give them another chance to win. Too much pressure on the D. Go for the dagger, thats the difference between and good and bad team.

How many good players are injured when some lame brains dog pile on them? After the fumbled punt and the resulting dog pile, I had trouble watching the rest of the game. It cost BYU unnecessary yardage that could have cost the game. There were no more dog pile televised, maybe Coach Mendenhall told the team to get their head in the game and leave the playground antics to after the game.
Lets try dog piling the apposing team and not so much each other. Grab that guy with the ball before he runs past you and at least three others. After all you are wearing the latest gloves that are "Sure Grip" or are they just to make you look cool?

But if Utah loses the rest of their games... BYU looks even worse. You always want the teams that beat you (especially the ones that kill you) to do well.

  • stanfunky Salt Lake City, UT
    Sept. 24, 2011 8:30 a.m.

    Observations:

Preston Hadley should be starting. Hands down, he's outplayed Eason.

The running backs in general need to hit the holes harder, they're running tentatively most of the time and missing chances to break big runs as a result.

The line and tight ends need to block better. Lots of sloppy blocking has led to running plays going 2-3 yards that could have been 8-9 yards easily.

Jake Heaps is throwing a LOT of passes behind and ahead of receivers. He's miles behind where he needs to be, and it's time to take the 'future star' label off - he's a 19 year old kid that's struggling to make reads and deal with the bigger, faster college game. Even the best BYU QB's were not immune to criticism from Lavell Edwards after poor showings, and Heaps should be no different.

The defense as a whole is improving game by game. They did a great job shutting down UCF's running game and forcing them to pass.

Overall, 2-2 isn't a bad place to be, at this stage of the season. But the issues are real and need to be rectified, now, or it will be a long year.

I for one would never say we are better than the Utes because they trashed us this year. We don't have an offense that much is true. We do have a defense though. Don't think that the Utah game was a bad defensive showing from BYU. It is hard to compete when your offense gives the ball to the other team 7 times. I don't know of any team who would win a game with 7 turnovers especially when a few of them are in their own territory. So, I give the Ute defense a lot of credit for how they played against BYU, now give the credit for this game where it belongs. Don't say lucky, just accept that the defense took this game from UCF like Utah took the game from BYU.

UCF may have been better than Utah last year, but I don't think it's the case this year. UCF has beaten a terrible Boston College team and an FCS team, and they lost to FIU, who, in the past 10 years, have never won more than 7 games in a season in the mighty Sun Belt Conference.

Time to send Jake Hypes to the pressbox too. He might learn a few things watching from up top:
    - When your receivers have beaten the coverage by ten yards, don't overthrow them by ten more yards
    - when they run 5 and outs, don't throw at their feet
    - when they run across the middle, don't throw 5 yards behind them or ten yards in front
    - when they are standing five yards away, don't throw as hard as you possibly can
-when there are more defenders than receivers in the area and the receivers are being smothered, look somewhere else - you just ain't 'that' good

Bronco, stop defending him. You say in the press conference that his throws are accurate and he's making good reads. You said he had only a handful of errant passes. Watch some game film please. Yeah, about five passes were dropped, but another 13 passes (38 percent) were errant or bad decisions. Stop blaming everyone else but him. He'll never learn accountability if you don't hold him to it. If you think he's too immature to handle constructive criticism then play someone more mature and give him some time to grow into it.

Good food, family, friends and football.

I did not wake up this morning angry, and calling for anyone's job.

    That being said.

I guess I bought into the pre-season hype a little more this year than I usually do.

The reality is that last summer I had BYU at 1-3, to 3-1 at this point of the season. I can live with 2-2.

Heaps should not be benched. That would be a short sighted, knee-jerk reaction. I would be disappointed if BYU went that way. The kid is the future of BYU football.

The coaching staff is inexperienced, but will learn on the job.

I watch BYU play because I like BYU. Too bad more people can't just enjoy the game.

Props to the staff and players for all of the hard work they do.

    Uteology,

I was wondering how long it would take for some u fan to bring up 1984 and our National Championship. u fans will always be jealous of it and will continue because they will NEVER be a National Championship team except in women's gymnastics. They will harp, spin, denigrate and anything else to try to be the "Big Brother", but it is about the race and winning, and BYU won. The battle is the year to year games. The war was who would win the NC trophy and BYU won it many years ago and ever since, the u has been trying to catch up and they just can't and won't and so that is why they are so angry with BYU and their fans.

Give it up u fans. You lost the war and no spinning will change it. We look forward to more years of battles, but the ultimate goal was won by BYU.

I watched a little bit of the BYU game last night. I really want them to run the table this year so Utah will look better. I think BYU fans should root for Utah as well. Both teams can only benefit from the other's success.
With that being said, i have a few things to say in reaction to the posts i've seen on here:
1- Montana State is not better than UCF.
2- As far as how they've played this year against mutual opponents, I'm gonna say that Utah looks much better than Texas, despite Texas's ranking. We'll see how the Utah-UCLA game goes.
3- Utah's Strength of Schedule is much tougher than BYU's.
4- Jake Heaps should gain some swagger the second half of the season.
5- Utah beating BYU 54-10 indicates that Utah is much better than BYU.
6- BYU beating UCF 24-17 indicates that BYU is better than UCF.

A lot of interesting things happened in this game but your complaint is that the players were dogpoling to celebrate? Let me clarify what happened.

Firstly, the rules say that you can't advance a muffed punt, and so that is why there was no TD, not because the players were celebrating.

Secondly, this is FOOOTBALL! And these are college kids, and it is EXCITING! Are you one of those West stands fans who act like it's a golf tournament? If so then I guess you should go to the locker room and tell those young hooligans to grow themselves up.

I see illogical arguments from both BYU and Utah fans on here. Many fans make excuses after horrible losses. BYU fans did it after the September 17 game, just like many Utah fans did after the Utah-TCU disaster last November. A true fan, however, stands behind his team and doesn't give up on them after one or two losses. I actually cheer for both teams, but I do think BYU has a better chance at having a better record by the end of the year. I fear that many Utah fans are also in denial about how difficult their season is really going to be. Of course, I am mature enough to admit that I could be wrong on my predictions. @thomas jefferson - I'll bet you never played football. Just about any time a defensive or special teams player gets a chance they will pick up a loose ball and try to advance it. The adrenalin is going and you don't stop to ask yourself or the ref if it's ok to advance to ball into the end zone. Nearly everytime I have seen a muffed kick/punt and the players have a chance to pick it up and go, they try it. Picking it up and advancing does not get penalized.

Your other assumption about what players should know in the excitement of the moment assumes that every player on the field saw the actual mishandling and knew for a fact that the reason the ball was free is because it was a 'muffed' punt as opposed to a fumble. Many players were fighting off blockers and may not have seen the actual mishandling.

The end zone celebration was not that much different that what happened six days ago but officiating crews are flag happy while others are less so.

Bottom line, you're just reaching for something to rag about.

Alright, let's be honest fellow Cougars, our defense and special teams carried us to the win last night. If not for that, we are 1-3 right now. Our defense is actually very good. They have played very well for 14 of the 16 quarters (minus the 2nd half to the Utes) so far this season.

It is time for us to face the fact that Heaps is not going to be very good. I have been on board with him since early last year when Riley Nelson was very clearly not the answer. But the more I watch him, the more I realize he isn't improving at all. In fact, I think he is getting worse. His arm is excellent, so he is deceiving to watch. It is his decision-making that is the problem. In addition, he is so impatient in the pocket, he won't ever let the play develop. He takes a 3 step drop and fires virtually every down. In fact, he reminds me of how bad Matt Leinart was for the Cardinals...always checking down.

It is time for Lark to be given a chance. And let's settle on a running back, shall we??

You would think one of the worse losses in the Utah/BYU rivalry would bring some fans down to earth but I guess a very ugly win against CFU makes them think they are a National powerhouse again, that's as big of a joke as Bronco saying "It's a great day to be a cougar".

    Congrats BYU on the victory.

At 2-2, and with games vs Idaho, Idaho State, NMSU, and SJSU, BYU is practically bowl eligible. However, I for one think it's nice to see the delusional-optimism return to so many Y fans though, insisting that BYU will finish 10-2 and that would indicate they are better than Utah. Oh boy. Hope springs eternal...

A few thoughts, some of them more obvious than others, even for folks from Mcallen, Tx:
    1) If Heaps can ever develop some touch, he will have been worth the investment.
    2) Doman in the box is better than Doman on the field.
    3) Contrary to what the Y fans were saying in August, Utah State will be a tough match-up for them next week.
    4) UCF is a decent mid-major team. But they are not to be confused with USF, which is in the Big East. Perhaps, maybe someday they too will be in the Big East, but for now they are not "AQ"
    5) Saying BYU is 1-2 vs AQ teams and that Utah is 0-1, does not indicate BYU is better than Utah.

I don't. In fact I wish them well. I stated in an earlier post that I was happy they got some breaks last night. However, I do feel sorry and embarrassed for this team. I can't remember a BYU offense that looked as horrible as this offense.

    To Uties and BluBooBirds,

A win is a W. Period. Utah beat BYU last week. Was it because of 7 turnovers? Sure it was. Eliminate the turnovers and who knows. But they got the turnovers and the W.

BYU gets the W for beating UCF. Would they have won without Hoffman's run? We don't count this win because UCF turned it over? No. We count the W.

At the end of the year, the only thing that counts is W's. That all a team can do.

The TEAM got the win. Including Heaps. Lay off the kid and give him a chance. If the coaches decide to try Lark, that is their job. Not yours. You don't know what your talking about. If Heaps isn't ruined, he'll be very very good. Maybe in a game or two. What he doesn't need is BYU fans bagging on him. Remember how happy the ute fans were when Kyle pulled Win. Didn't last long, and lucky for them. The other guy sucked. None of us have seen Lark play a down. If Doman is playing Heaps, he has his reasons.

  • Seattleview Federal Way, WA
    Sept. 24, 2011 7:50 p.m.

Most games are won or lost based on a few key plays. Heaps keeps on missing on making those plays by overthrowing a reciever, poorly timed throws, or interceptions. BYU cant win by throwing away those opportunities.

Doing better later on against Idaho State wont cut it either.

Doman needs to focus on QB and maybe give someone else a chance. Heaps should focus on the mental part of the game and either improve or watch from the sidelines for a while.

  • worf Mcallen, TX
    Sept. 24, 2011 7:53 p.m.

    A1994,

    Some reasons:

    1. Utah State doesn't have the defense of Texas of Ole Miss.
    2. With seven turnovers, that's seven times the offense didn't have the ball. That's why the low scoring. Can't have an offense when you haven't got the ball. The utes would be awful if they didn't win with those gifts. The two rushing touchdowns were also flukey gifts as the defense were down and reacting to all the turnovers. Texas didn't even have those kinds of runs and have a superior running game to the utes.
    3. With less turnovers and additional modifications, thirty one points are not out of reach.
    3.

Bronco was right last year. It's ideal to start a quarterback who's learned the ropes, shown leadership, and earned the respect of his teammates.

Is there anyone who thinks that a team led by Riley Nelson couldn't have gone 7-6 in 2010? I understand Nelson got hurt and Heaps got the gig full-time, but the way it all went down showed indecisiveness and lack of leadership on Bronco's part (which he's admitted).

Thing is, we're used to having redshirt freshmen or sophomores start at QB at BYU, but usually after they've served a mission first. Heaps probably should be in South America preaching the Gospel, maturing into a leader.

Having said all of that, we have what we have. A lot of the lack of performance / confidence by Heaps comes from having a new OC, and not a lack of talent on Heaps' part. Changing quarterbacks now is not the right move.

It is apparent Doman has too much on his plate to be both the OC and QB coach. DETMER FOR QB COACH or OC!!! Pay him whatever it takes to get him to Provo next year!

Thank goodness for BYU's ST and Defense...The running game looked better, especially in the second half. I was at the game and focused in on Heaps alot, his problem is really pretty simple...he just gets too antsy in the pocket and rushes alot of his throws. I donno if he just gets too excited when a receiver is open or if he is just not trusting his OL. He needs to settle down, set his feet and make throws. Until he fixes this he will continue to overthrow, underthrow, and throw behind receivers.

I watched the whole game on Friday. Whatever Heaps had the last half of the season last year is gone. They can't move the ball. They started to get a little traction against UCF in the run game. (('m sure the fact that UCF was playing at a high altitude probably wore them down.) But Heaps' passes were more often than not, behind or way over his receivers.

I didn't use "ifs" or "butts" in my past posting. I am concerned about Heaps and it seems BYU has to simplify things for him. It's not that Doman is a bad OC. The Aggies don't have the defenses of Texas, Ole Miss, or UCF. The utes didn't need one. BYU's defense is good enough to hold the Ags to seventeen points and the cougs will have some offensive improvement. History has proven that.
