Should have been a penalty for leaving his feet on BYU.
Nice no call on the helmet to helmet in the end zone.Nice wife,
Jake! We'll take the seven points.
Not good news for BYU- the Crowton offense is back.
Seems like BYU is driving pretty well on Utah. They just can't hold on to the
ball. And on the one drive they were finally able to do so, Heaps is unable to
keep it going once they passed the 30. Can't keep settling for field goals
and/or dropping the football if they expect to win the game.
Hope my Utes have enough players to finish the game. 14-10 Utah.
Thanks Bronco- who else could make Winn look like a great QB- no pass rush and
hope we can cover all day long- hmmm I bet even I could still look good at QB
given that model
BYU should be totally embarassed for the way they are playing today. Total lack
of prepration from the coaching staff. It all starts at the top and that's
Mendenhall and Doman. Didn't have the team ready to play today and they got
dominated by a very average Pac 12 team.
As a BYU fan, BYU is getting out coached big time! Xeladave is right. No pass
rush at all. Now Wynn has rhythm. BYU Offense stinks.
Eason is horrible. Bronco will say "We didn't execute."
Well, coach, whose fault is that?A snap goes into the end zone.
What should a player be taught? Fall on it and take a safety, don't give up a
touchdown.Player fumbles on the 5, holding the ball in one arm, low.
What should he be taught? High and tight, or two hands near the end zone.30 yard punt return? Didn't BYU get killed in special teams last year?
Do not pick up a fumbled kick return. Fall on it. Horrible coaching.
Utah 30BYU 10with about 8:32 min in 3rd.Kyle,
please (x3)....I am begging you to call an onside kick on the kick-off.Please....
How does one miss a PAT? Did you see Whit yell at the kicker? That could come
back to haunt us. Keep it up Utah!
Hey guys itleast we play the ISU bengals this year. We should defeat them and
get the offense rolling by the time we play that Big Sky power team. This is
just pathetic. Maybe BYU is out of Utah's league in College football. I
definately know that BYU is out of Utah's league when it comes to coaching.
Offense so predictable and no running game. One dimensional. Defense starting to
get exposed by a very average Pac 12 team. I'm ready for a change in the head
coach. He just hasn't been able to get it done.
Get over yourselves it's called getting out coached and out played. It's called
speed and athletes over no speed and not quite atheletic enough to keep up. Get used to it!!!!
BYU is not that good.
BYU is giving up. Look tired. Chow vs. (no name Doman). Great coaching vs. bad
cougs are awful. Bronco is not a coach, he's a den mother.Terrible
Will the MWC take BYU back? At least on The MTN network, we didn't have to be
embarrassed nationally on a weekly basis. What pathetic offense & special
teams. Really sad coaching. This season is complete failure. Nothing positive on
the horizon. Beginning of the end in major college sports for BYU.
Wow, this game is over. BYU fans, please do not give up hope. There is always
next year.Next year Heap and Doman will be much better. Bronco will
be coach of the year in 2012. Mark it down.
Wow. Now why did we get rid of our last offensive coordinator? This may be the
worst single offensive game BYU has ever played.
I guess Utah was just more righteous this year. Utah has won the last 4 out of
5 times. When does it stop being a "rivalry" anymore? I
for one will now officially announce that the "rivalry" is now
The word "coordinator" implies some sort of coordination. Is there
any coordination going on here at all? I guess the boys are all wearing similar
uniforms. Does that count as "coordination?"
sneekee23, I totally agree. Out coached, and out played. Hey, 62. Can't wait
until you get to see yourself looking for someone to block while Heaps is
getting sacked by a guy who went through your gap.Look, I've seen
teams come back from 3 TD's in the fourth -- Utah against BYU in 1978 -- but I'm
let me guess, we didn't execute. can't wait to hear what heaps and co have to
say after this. only september and we have so little to play for
now. huge loss to our rival and no real big names on our schedule.
People are now leaving the stadium.
Why so hard on your coaching staff Cougars? Bronco is a good coach. Whit is just
KamUte: Agree completely. UTE D are studs, and Chow making an average offense
look good. Inexperience shows with Y coaching.
At the end of the 3rd, the BYU offense is choking and doesn't want the ball.
The skill players (specifically Heaps) is showing no toughness nor confidence.
Two fumbles and overthrowing wide open short-route throws into the flat. The Utah/BYU game is probably the best test as to the quality of both
teams coaches. BYU coaches are failing. Doman better start doing his job,
because he will not last the year if this keeps up. They have got rid of two
outstanding offensive coaches (Chow, and Anae) for doing a better job.
Pac 12 whoopin boys and girls!!!
Heaps is the most over rated player in Y history.
majmajor | 10:19 p.m. Sept. 17, 2011 The Utah/BYU game is probably
the best test as to the quality of both teams coaches. BYU coaches are failing.
Doman better start doing his job, because he will not last the year if this
keeps up.------------A test of Bronco as a head coach will be
whether Doman is in press box next game.
Has a member of BYU's coaching staff coughed up the ball lately? Give credit
where credit is due. Ute D is solid!
To all 4 and 5 star athletes looking at BYU. Don't! BYU just became
The game has come down to execution. The coaches coach. The players
execute. And Utah has looked very good. Suddenly, competing for the
PAC-12 south isn't such a stretch.
Well, we now know two things. 1. Just how bad BYU is, and 2. Just how hopeless
Heaps is. BYU better throw him in a heap. Does remind me however of my years
as a marching band member for Utah back in the early 60's, and it appears that
the old fighting slogan for BYU back then will be applicable to this year. That
old refrain coming from Prove was and I guess will be again, "WAIT TILL
Bad is bad, that is all you can say. Utah is a much better team.
Pathetic. Absolutely and utterly pathetic. The Ute Trolls are
absolutely correct...BYU football is nothing but a jumped up mid-major wannabe
with delusions of grandeur...and that's all it will ever be.If the
brethren decided at their meeting next week to drop the program, I wouldn't shed
any tears. I am done with BYU football, and I am gone.
Utah 40BYU 10"This game's in the refrigerator! The door's
closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and
the Jell-O is jiggling...."
Been a long time since we have seen such a total melt-down of coaches, players,
fans and admiinistrators.....the shell-shocked looks and deer-in-the-headlights
stares were amazing. No bragging rights this decade for those obnoxious &/or
humble fans who live and die with a win or loss.....no way I can go to church
this week......as I actually like both teams.Spin this however you
want to, but the hype from some players & coaches seems to be lost in
reality. Maybe actions really do speak louder than words.
@ MiP | 10:32 p.m. Sept. 17, 2011 I would have said a slaughter. At
this point, its all semantics.
This is the first BYU game that I have ever seen the BYU defense quit, and they
did it with 12 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.Give Utah's defensive
coaches credit, the Ute defense killed the Cougar's offense. The BYU players are
as good as Utah's. The failure is on the BYU offensive coaches' preparation of
the team. They failed the whole team.
Wow, what a train wreck.
SanDiegoUte | 10:29 p.m. Sept. 17, 2011 SAN DIEGO, CAHas a member of
BYU's coaching staff coughed up the ball lately? Give credit where credit is
due. Ute D is solid!---------First, Ute D is solid. Not
doubt. BUT:A fumbled shotgun snap isn't the defense, it is the
offense. Failing to fall on it isn't the defense, it is the offense. Not
knowing to fall on it, that is coaching.Failing to fall on a fumbled
kickoff, that is coaching and execution. Gunners being at the 5, that is
defense, and failure to block by special teams. Only throwing one
pass down field (that went for a TD, mind you), that is play calling. Having an
offense that CONSISTENTLY snaps the ball with a couple seconds on the clock.
That is coaching and reflects two things: Slow play calling, and pace of play in
practice.Wanting to be on the sidelines "because you have young
players" is over-estimating "rah rah" and underestimating setting
players up to succeed through good play calling. Has Chow never had a young QB?
Every 2-3 years of his entire career -- that has been spent in the booth.
BYU wanted exposure on ESPN. Guess what? I wonder if we will see this replayed
on KBYU? I wonder if Heaps will have his press guy call another
press conference to announce he will be turning pro?
Well, this is embarrassing. Can't BYU get Weber State on the schedule instead
Well what will be the excuse this time Bronco? If you think last week was bad
with the boosters; you ain't seen nothin yet. Down by 37 and still 7:30 left
in the game. I would definitely say that Utah is a much better team and maybe
playing a good team who is also a rivalry is a bad idea so early in the season
when your coaching ability is still catching up with a real, non-excuse-making
coach like Whittingham. Heaps = Hype. Glad Riley got put in.
At least, byu is consistent. They... 1) only played for a half
against the U2) still haven't scored more than 18 pts in a game
I'm in total shock. I thought that Heaps was better than Wynn and that our
running backs and offensive line were much better than Utah's. It looks like
Utah is playing a little league team.
RILEY NELSON should have been in the game 3 quarters ago. Riley is 10x the
Quarterback that Heaps is.Hey Riley you should have stuck with USU
man. Heaps OVERRATED.
So can we all agree that wearing the same t-shirt with a catchy phrase does not
make for motivation?
i'm trying to stay positive about heaps. but its getting harder to like him.
talks too much. doesn't back it up on the field. doesn't bother chasing his
interceptions. panics when they blitz. doesn't make adjustments. three more
years of this?
A heartfelt good luck pledge from a non LDS California Ute fan...good luck next
Wow. 31 points off turnovers alone. I thought BYU stressed discipline and Utah
was the wild boys. Blow out.
BYU fans will say "Bronco is a great coach. Look at his record."Things Bronco is a good at:- defensive coordinator.- "setting the tone" and getting effortThings he
is horrible at:- Oversight of assistants. "Run out the clock
and kick a field goal" at last year's Ute game? That is a HC call, not a
coordinator call.- Game planning for a TEAM, vs game planning a
defense. Florida State, faster, smaller, you've got a huge line, a huge back
that is your best ever. Pound the ball and keep your defense off the field.- OC calls a handoff instead of kneeling on it to run out the half
against UCLA years back. The HC isn't paying attention? 2-4 minutes left in a
half a HC should be paying attention to managing the clock. Texas did last
week, and the 3 points at the end of the half won the game for them.- Your RB's season after season, even with a change in RB coaches, don't
protect the ball on the goal line? (Unga one-handed it on the goal line all the
time and fumbled.) HC needs to see that and hold the COACH responsible.
I want to hear all of the excuses from the Ute haters. Since you think Utah is
bad then BYU is Horrible with a capital H. Wynn can hardly throw the ball with
any zip and Heaps is way worse. I actually feel sorry for the Y. Better get
ready for UCF next Friday. Utes offense and defense played some good ball in
the second half. Go Utes!!!!! HaHaHa I can't believe the score. Ha Ha Ha!!
Congrats UTES!....for giving byu a total beatdown!
Thankfully Utah has put in their 2's and 3's. This is brutal.
Riley hopefully your brother will make the right decision and go to to Utah
CHOKE! yeah Mildred in Fillmore, we do look like a little league team. Great
game Utes! Hope you have a great rest of the season. I'll be cheering for you in
Pac 12 play. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of crying for my Cougs for the rest
of the season. Except for TCU, the rest of the season looks like a little league
Low scoring? What game is the author watching?
I am waiting for the Duckhunter's professional anaylsis of the game.Crickets CricketsCricketsLOL LOL
I am a Cougar fan, but after this smack down from Utah, there better not be any
more BYU fan posts on Utah articles. We have no right to talk any smack the
rest of this season.
Utah was a 6 point underdog. Vegas hates Utah.
This next week, we will find out what BYU this team is made of. They have a
short week and go up against UCF. I wish them the best, and I hope this game
hurts so they don't lose another game.Congrats Utes. Tonight, your
team played outstanding ball! Win the PAC!
Why has the D news not reported the final score? hmmmmBecause the
Utes just put the biggest beat down in the rivalry in the last 30 year.I'm sure the cougs will look much better against Idaho St and company. Maybe
not though. Jake Heaps looks\ed scared. I see USU coming into to Provo and
The sad thing is, BYU will still go to a bowl game this year with that schedule.
Hold on everybody. Are we sure the better team won this time?
Impressive win, Utes. I expected a Ute win, but with a much closer score.Good day for all the state schools in Utah, with Weber State beating
Sacramento State 49-17, Southern Utah over WAC-bound Texas-San Antonio 45-22,
Dixie State over Simon Fraser 42-7, and Snow over Pima 35-14.As
promised, the season quarterback rating for the starting QBs of the seven Utah
schools:Keeton (USU): 154.3Sorensen (SUU): 140.0Hoke
(WSU): 138.7Eastman (Snow): 137.7Stevenson (DSC): 128.4Wynn
(Utah): 120.1Heaps (BYU): 106.7
Can someone stop John White?Police is chasing him on I-15...but he
kept running like he ran through BYU D.
"Oh man, the Utes are in for a rude awakening when they get to Provo on
September 17th! Mark my words." -Every coug fan on this board who has been
repeating some variation of this, maybe just keep your foot in your mouth for
awhile. It's a great time to be a UTE!!!!
there maybe a reason BYU had to go independent.
First of all- THE BETTER TEAM WON- and I hope the Utes have a stellar season.
Second- I feel a little lied to as a fan. I thought we (BYU) had a
good team. Now it looks like our super powered front 7 are only good for 30
minutes- and there's no suitable backups. If those guys are too tired to play
in the second half, they're being conditioned improperly. Our stellar receiving
core is getting shut out in man coverage. Our three headed monster (RBs) are
more like a 3 headed kitten. Third-Our secondary is terrible- even
I know that you shouldn't let receivers run free behind our defenders. Fourth- Tanner Mangum can't get here soon enough!
The only thing better than beating the cougs twice in a year is doing it twice
in 10 months =) Go UTES!!
Hey Ducky,Hold on, stop the presses, this just in: Ducky burns his
genuine BYU Heaps jersey and moves permanently from Utah County to live on an
Indian reservation in North Dakota! We're gonna miss you Ducky.Meanwhile ESPN is firing everyone associated with the BYU contract and meeting
with lawyers to figure out damage control.
So any more questions why the U went to the PAC 12 and BYU didn't?
Let's just be grateful that Utah is playing a PAC 12 schedule while BYU plays a
WAC schedule. If not, it would get worse and worse.
BYU is a joke. Doman should be fired tomorrow. Mendenhall should probably
resign. I've been to all but three home games since 1995, and I'm
done with this joke of a football team and especially coaching staff. Heaps may be the most overrated QB of all time. Hope Apo, Van Noy
and the other few legit athletes on the team do what's in their best interest
and transfer to a real program.
I don't know, it looked like Riley Nelson's knee was down on that fumble at the
end of the 4th quarter. I guess we'll never really know who the better team
The best I can say at this time while I'm tucked in this fetal position is...it hurts, it was not expected, and oh... congrats to the Utes. You're the better team at this point in time.Cougars... pathetic,
just plain pathetic
54-10 in Provo?!! Montana State gave the Utes a better game in Salt Lake!
Maybe the kitties from BYU should have gone "indenpendent" in
FCS....thats I-AA for those of you in Provo. Go UTES!!
OK, I've never said this before in my life, but I actually felt sorry for the
Cougars tonight.Did I just say that?Congratulations to
the Utes . . . what a game!
Last week, I was not to impressed with Utah. But after watching them tonight, I
am debating about cancling my trip to Salt Lake for the Oct. 1st game.I questioned the choice of bringing Utah into the conference, but now... my
question has been answered!!!
Where's Ducky? Check this out....byU's punter had 6 punts for 276
yards. The best stat of the night.John White for Heisman! Ok maybe
not since it was in garbage time. The byU offense had given away 20 points by
that point. Thanks Jakey for a fun night.I'm sorry, I just can't
Well now I feel dumb for predicting 20-17 BYU, and totally amused and thrilled
at the actual result.
I thought BYU would win this game, but even in a loss I thought it would be
close. I never saw this coming. Maybe Lance Reynolds should become OC and James
Lark starting. Doman is getting out coached every week and Heaps is not playing
well. There should be a QB battle IMO, Heaps is not progressing and needs to be
pushed for his job. Defense DID quit, tired of saving a bad offenses butt all
Heaps is shovel ready.
This is not working. Let's make Bronco either the DC or HC. He can't do both.
Let's make Doman either the OC or the QBC. He can't do both. Heaps
looked like he was making strides at the end of last season, but I think he's
worse now than he was at the beginning of last year. And it's not
like we don't have good QBs on the bench. Let's take a lesson from Texas.
Gilbert should have been NFL bound, but he couldn't get it done. Mack tried
McCoy and magic. Let's give Nelson, Lark or Munns a try. They can't do worse
than Heaps, can they?
So life goes - you win some you lose some - you beat the daylights out of some
and sometime you get the daylights beaten out of you - But I still
love my Cougars and I plan on a 10 game winning streak. Utah out played us
tonight and that will be hard to live with but we say good game and move on.
How I hope I never see that again.
Re: chicagobornYes the better team won by 44 tonight.
Serious question to all BYU fans: does anyone disagree that Doman should be
unemployed tomorrow morning?
Looks like Heaps is afraid to get hit. Man UP.
What a rout! All those over zealous BYU fans can just eat your words. This is
Ok seriously, the rivalry seemed more friendly this year, which I enjoyed. I
sincerely wish BYU luck the rest of the year. A good Y season helps us more
than a bad one. Here's hoping the exposure works out better for you in the
coming weeks than it did tonight. Beat Utah State.Go football in the
state of Utah, andGO UTES!
So, did the Cougs get Jimmered?
Well, sometimes it takes a forest fire to help the forest survive and grow.
This season is effectively over for BYU. No more big games. Just use the rest
of the season to practice for the real deal next year.I still don't
know if Utah is that good. Don't get me wrong, they knew exactly what to do
when someone handed them touchdown after touchdown. 8 turnovers??? Wow.
Thank you, BYU, for your ESPN contract. Seeing this in HD was awesome!I hope BYU regroups from this dismantling. They are better than what they
showed tonight.Good luck to both teams throughout the remainder of
Wow, Utah is pretty good. Too bad we won't see them on ESPN again until the Las
BYU vs UofU. Speechless. George Will said football combines the two worst
aspects of American life -- mindless violence and committee meetings. And in
this game add gusts of gravity and butterfingers. Last week Branco wore a
t-shirt that read "Band of Brothers." Next week , he should wear one
that reads, "I'm with stupid."I bet the BYU team members
won't find dates for the next two weeks. Even the ones who are married.
Congratulations Utah!BYU fans should have recognized how weak this
team was when they eked out a 1 point win at Mssissippi, BYU has been the most
arrogant program in the country for some time. The problem is that there are
enough patsies on the schedule to let it continue. It is time to
disband BYU sports and afot the BYU -I model.
Hang in there Cougs. Lots of spirit and athleticism carried you through the
first half, but the turnovers were killers. We need two (or three, USU?) good
teams in the Beehive State, so this is a Ute Fan that wishes you well as an
Independent or with another conference.
@truthsandwich too funny for words.
There were about ten late plays in a row to John White IV. It was obvious the
ball was going to him. And he churned up some ridiculous yards during that
stretch. He had something like 9 yards on 9 carries for the first half. So,
BYU contained him well then. What a difference a half can make.
Unbelievable! What a slaughter!!! I don't know if many fans from either
fanbase saw this coming. If you read the local papers and listened to the local
sports talk shows, all you heard all week was how good Heaps is, how BYU's
defense is equal to the Utes, and that BYU would win. Ah, it's nice to see my
rivals have to eat a little humble pie.Utah's future is looking
great. For all the criticism that Wynn has had to take, remember, he is a
3-year starter and has had a lot of good games already (the bowl victory over
Cal; he played every bit as good as Hall in the rivalry game 2 years ago as
well; etc.). He's led the Utes to two 10-win seasons, and tonight he looked
like his old pre-surgery self.Great game, Utes!!!
I have never been so embarrassed.....not just with sports, about anything. That
is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen in my lifejust want to
point out a few things1- The players gave up. Anytime, there is a
little opposition, they give up2- I would give anything to see
mendenhall get fired up and get in someones face for giving up/fumbling in the
red zone/etc. he is too mellow to be head coach. Should stick with DC3-I simply dont understand how you can be down by 23 at the start of the 4th
quarter and come out and only run 5-and-out routes, then huddle up after every
play. As Herm Edwards would say YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. We havent figured that
I'm ashamed at some of the comments on this board tonight. This is
not the time to pile on the BYU team or the coaches. Show some class. The only thing possible in a situation like this is to regroup, and rebuild
the confidence, and go forward, without looking back.Kyle
Whittingham has done this with the Utes a number of times over the pass few
years, and we can too.
Great game Utah. Domination in all aspects.
Chow and Whigingham are both BYU throwbacks. It's won't be long before Utah
gets their butts kicked all over the PAC 12. Money does not win football games,
teams do. The fun is just beginning.
Too bad for the dismal showing Cougs, but keep your chins up. Heaps is still
young, and has a great arm, he just needs to settle down and the offensive needs
to find its rhythm. You have some great, long wide outs, and a stoud O line as
always. Your D is as good as I think I've ever seen, but they looked exhausted
in the second half. That could be a result of conditioning, inability to rotate
players in and out, or lost morale (which, given the circumstances, is
understandable). But, the talent is definitely there.I hope for
your sakes the rest of the season picks up, you have a far better pedigree and
tradition than your team showed tonight. It might be time for some changes
among the coaching ranks..but that's for the administration to decide. I
personally thought it was a bad decision to push out Anae, given his track
record of success.
I actually felt sorry for the ESPN analysts doing their best as apologists for
BYU. ESPN has got to be seriously rethinking their relationship with BYU. This
is so, so, embarrassing on so many levels. Well, at least the
coaches don't have to stay late and are able to get home for dinner every night.
I wouldn't want them to spend one minute more than they need to away from home.
After all football is not a priority on the BYU football team. That was clearly
evident tonight.I've never seen such a beat-down in one half.
All those months of smack talk about everything from Heaos to Transfers to your
D to get flatlined by your rival at home. EPIC!
Golly does anyone know where Ducky and his little buddy Sammyg are tonight?
Utah State is licking its chops. For that matter, even Idaho State is gaining
confidence in their chances. Go Big Blue.
Any team who can't win and win big with 7 turnovers on their side should be
embarrassed. All Utah did tonight was not embarass themselves. Oh, by the way
Utes the REAL score of the USC game was 23 - 14 (in case you did not hear).
From a Ute fan to BYU fans:Bronco is a good coach and a great guy. Do not
call for his resignation like you did to Anae. Bronco has led you to 4? 10+ win
seasons. His record at this point in his career is quite a bit better than
Lavells was after 7 seasons. The only difference is now Utah who is much
improved from the 80's is beating you consistently. If BYU fires Bronco their
football program will be in the dumps for 5-10 years at the minimum.
Heaps isn't tha answer. Sick of listening to his non performing mouth
Troy Hinds, Zach Lindsay you guys sure you made the right decision? I hope you
reconsider and come play with the big boys. Yes BYU is on ESPN but now after
this they will be moving to the late slot on ESPN 3.... Good game Utah!!!
White, Langi, are still running!!!
@HuskyBarkUtah is more deserving of a seat in the Pac 12 than a Washington
team that didn't win a single game in 2008! Not impressed...no one is impressed
with Huskies except for maybe Jim Rome
Wow! Where were BYU's daunting linemen? Totally stifled. Where is a real
offensive coordinator? Wow!
Going independent to increase exposure and to get money is just plain vanity.
And now the chickens have come home to roost. Pride cometh before the fall. All is vanity.
nice. "You're the better team at this point in time." BYU fans,
classsic, delusional.how pathetic, your all ready trying to set
yourself up for the claim later that byu is better? this point and time? I guess your one of the fans that thinks the 6 loss terrible unranked
byu team that got beat at RES last year was better than the 10 win RANKED utah
team that showed so much mercy tonight by not running the score. Can
you all beleive that utah did not kick the field goal to make it 57-10? I can't
believe utah putting in all their 4th stringers and still coming up with
turnovers. Utah should have ran the score. the win had nothing to do
with turnovers. BYU simply is terrible. 11 yards rushing vs 280 HAHAHAHA.
Wow!So much vindication for me arguing with delusional byu fans on
this stupid website all preseason and season so far. I was right all along. BYU
cannot compete with utah this year.BYU will claim later after
beeting the wors teams (and having the worst SOS) that they've
"Improved." just bad teams!!! Ole miss is terrible. BYU is worse!
I just wonder if Bronco is convinced this year that the better team won.....
(that was the worst comment for bulletin board material he could have made in
regards to losing 17-16, not smart)For all those Provo fans who are
saying wait until next year, not sure if you made note of the player profiles
but Utah has very few seniors, Utes are very very young. Congrats to
the Aggies for becoming the 2nd best team in the state without even playing a
Tom in CA. Wow BYU is pretty bad. Better hope your team can going forward beat
the dregs of the football world (some question about that after tonights beat
down) or BYU might not even go to a bottom tier bowl game. Go Utes
Sure, the turnovers ruined BYU tonight. But the more serious problems are dumb
penalties, especially 2 really really dumb pass interference calls on third and
long that led to key Ute scores. Also, no offensive coordinator can adequately
call a decent game from ground level on the sidelines. No way! Cant see what is
really happening out there. Why we throw little short outs on third and long,
everytime in 2011, is beyond me. So predictable in the first 3 games. When the
BYU offense understands where the first down marker is, and directs meaningful
plays towards it, then the offense will work just fine. Hey BYU, It is OK to
throw verticle instead of horizontal, and, it is very smart to use those tight
ends more too. And pass to set up the run! Finally Bronco, you have got to want
to put opponents away. I know you love those close low scoring games but finally
getting to the BCS will require a different gametime attitude towards winning.
Put your opponent away!
I could score three times myself in this game. Utah earned points = 21.
Utah, way to keep steady all 4 quarters. Great win, but we need to Play better.
This byu team is immature and overconfident. We can't expect teams in the pac to
be that way. Lets keep this rivalry going in the years to come. Its
Nice to lay a beat down on the cougs every once in a while. Go
The game is being replayed on kbyu. Should be fun to watch.
The speed of the Pac 12 will eat Utah up.
Wow, Wynn stood tall and took the hits and you have to give him credit, while
Jake looked scared and had a lot of happy feet.
To all Ute Fans: From here on out lets not say a word about this game. This
is what BCS teams do to non BCS teams. We have more important games than this
for the rest of the year, and every opponent we play from here on out is better
than the opponent we played tonight.
The interesting thing to watch now is how BYU responds. Last year after TCU took
my Utes to the woodshed they really stuggled the next couple of games. I hope
they can bounce back and represent our state well. GO Utes!
I say BYU should drop Heaps and put Jimmer in as starting QB!
As a Y fan, it is now time to openly admit that this independence is a joke, we
had zero to play for after the Texas loss, and now after this Ute loss and no
conference title to play for there is zero reasons to buy a ticket to watch a
BYU team that has no offense and gives up against there rival. We were
absolutely humiliated tonight on national tv, and now we have nothing but
cupcakes on the schedule. We need a conference ASAP! And a QB. And an OC.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haha ha haScore Board!
byu looked worse than they really are.utah looks better than they
really are. congrats by the way. you kicked our butts tonight.without the ridiculous turnovers this game isn't a blowout.i still
think these teams are pretty similar:both will lose more games this
season. both will go to third rate bowl games that no none really
cares about.time for some rugby world cup to forget this game ever
vj fehoko is still running too... albeit very slowly, he's still running
BYU may never be ranked ever again; ironically----BYU may win more games this
year than Utah. I'm a BYU fan and always will be----Utah has speed and size
and plays like animals; Utah is better at football, BYU is better at other
things------------ yet Utah could possibly lose every single game in October.
Take heart Cougars.San Jose State, New Mexico State, Idaho State,
Oregon State and oh yeah, Idaho State will help you forget about what happened
tonight.Heaps 500 yd. passing games are just around the corner.Oh, and about that upcoming schedule helping you forget about
tonight.No chance.Utah 54 tds 10.
Did anyone see how many underclassmen made huge plays for Utah? The Utes are
going to be good for a long time.
@ MILMMTReally? The fun is just beginning? After a 54 to 10 loss you
should be a little more humble. Utah just showed BYU where the real athletes
are coming to play football. BYU's lineman can't play more than the first half
without looking completely exhausted. Utah's athletic (Not big and slow like
BYU's) lineman made your lineman look like they couldn't walk 100 yards without
taking a break.
Hey all you Coug fans...don't worry...the Church is still true...Go Utes! We'll let you all know how the Rose Bowl feels in January!
BYU Fans - there is nothing to disagree about on this one. The best team is the
U of U. They showed it on the field and they got better as the night went on.
BYU handed the Utes too many great opportunities and the Utes took advantage of
each. Yes, BYU is not quite ready for the independent "prime time"
that they have so often talked about. I said it here many times that at this
time, independence was not the way to go. Yes, they now have exposer but it is
not the type they wanted. Other than very loyal BYU fans, no one else will be
watching this train wreck. Congratulations to Utah for a fine game.
@GoshJarciaYup, Washington did not win a single game that year (even
lost to BYU in Seattle). Washington has had a rough decade, my point was/is that
Utah has a great shot at the PAC 12 title if they play like they did tonight and
like they did at USC.
@ Tom in CA | 2:50 p.m. Sept. 16, 2011 Vallejo, CA "With
the Cougar D coming up big, I see a goose egg being laid.BYU 31utah 0." Hey Tom, who was it that laid an egg?Tom, are you out there? Tom? Must be with the Duckhunter.
Jake...Thank you for a fun night. From the first play to the last, it was a
pleasure.Good night Ducky. It'll be OK. lolGo Utes!
MILMMT...........Do you need a hug?
Sophomore BYU QBs:Wilson - Won the WAC, Ranked 16McMahon - Won
the WACDetmer - Won the WAC, Ranked 18Heaps - 3 TD's in 3 games,
I'm not going to pile on or take cheap shots, because I (as a Ute fan) was as
shocked as anyone by this. I saw two good, but not great teams going into a game
that I thought would go down to the end. I'm amazed by the outcome, because I
honestly thought that BYU was hitting harder than Utah in the first half.
I have to say that I am so proud of the Ute players. Jordan Wynn spoke of the
toughness of the BYU front line and no player chest pounded or said that the win
was a result of living right, or claimed to "hate" BYU. This shows
signs of the rivalry developing a sense of perspective. I can't tell you
how proud I am to be a Ute fan. No matter what the rest of the season brings,
I'll remember this one.
Did Jimmer leave early too?
Didn't waste my time watching this game! Knew the result after last week's BYU
performance. Saw the lowlights and noticed the Y coach covered his "Band of
Brothers" shirt. Was that done after the first half or before the game
started?I'm getting to believe that coach Anae was let go not because of
his coaching style but of some other reason...like getting Doman a job! Doman
has no idea of what his doing and let me state this again...Heaps Sucks! I feel
very sorry for ESPN showing BYU football! BYU will be 1-10 in 2011!
Utah's football program is simply much better than BYU's. This isn't just Bronco
not being able to prepare his players this more a HUGE talent difference between
the two programs. Good athletes don't fumble the ball away 7 times. Good
athletes don't get lost on the field down after down. Utah is bigger, faster and
much more athletic so sorry Cougar fans I think you just watched the beginning
of the end of BYU football. I suspect a record this year of 4-7 and next year
about the same or worse. How many losing records will it take for the school and
the church to simply cut the embarrassment and cancel the program?? BYU is
REALLY BAD in every facet of the game. Yikes!! Really pathetic. Oh and a new
coach isn't going to make any difference. YOu are going to get somebody to come
in and recruit a bunch of un-athletic returned missionaries and expect them to
compete against top notch D-1 athletes. So enjoy the firesides Cougar fans
because that is about all you will have to look forward to this year ...and the
Congratulations Utes!81 - 20 against the two mid-majors on our
schedule. The remaining schedule is against nine BCS teams. Hopefully the Utes
are ready now they have played their two tune-up games.Good luck to
BYU the rest of the way. Hopefully you will have an opportunity to play in a
BCS league sometime soon.Go Utes!!
Well, as a Ute fan I thought it started out as a great game. I never thought I'd
say this, but I did start to feel sorry for BYU. Utah is definitely the better
team, we aren't the better team by 44 points. BYU's got talent and if they can
just re-group and get their crap together this week, they should still be able
to put a good season together. For their sake I hope it doesn't take as long as
last season. Each of BYU's victories from here on out only help Utah.
What is BYU's problem? Is it Doman, the OC who called very few good plays
throughout the game? Is it Heaps who was so terribly inaccurate it made me
cringe? Is it the defense that only lasts for one half? Or is it all of the
above? This is absolutely the worst BYU game I have ever witnessed, and it was
in the biggest game of the year. Sure there are other games to be played, but
without a conference, or a decent bowl game to go to this seems like it should
have been the game of the year. I don't know what happened, but I am done with
Doman. Bench Heaps. That may seem hasty, but neither of them are performing.
The offense has been inept through three games. BYU didn't go independent to
beat up on teams like UTEP. It went indepent to become a BCS team. Something
has to change soon or BYU will be 6-6 again in a year that sees no improvement
for a team that is hungry for it.
Bronco is at his best tonight...he is building fine young men(not football
players) Great job Bronco. Is this the kind of exposure you wanted?
I actually felt kind of bad for the cougs until I read the posts from a few of
the byu fans. Do you not realize good defenses force turnovers? That good teams
make adjustments at halftime? All the sour grapes in Utah county do nothing but
make a pretty good whine. I'm shocked. I really thought BYU would put up a
little more fight. You don't need to throw yourr defense under the bus. If the O
can't move (or hang on to) the ball time, of possesion against any team that
badly will wear any D out. Good luck with the rest of the season. It's hard for
me to really hate you anymore as the game is not that important up north. I've
been going to games quite a while now and I know the way you are feeling right
now. This used to happen to us on a yearly basis.
Amazingly awful game! I'm not sure what happened to BYU, but I hope whatever it
is, it can be fixed in a hurry!! Kudos to the Utes for playing a good game. BYU
has so much talent, but something seems to be wrong with the timing, and with
being able to get into the end zone. Fumbles and miscues really hurt us tonight.
Pick up the pieces and do better next week. Still love ya!
BYU fans were all so READY to get rid of Anae and get Doman. So how about now???
Doman is a joke. Doman would be better served as the offensive coordinator at
Sky Line high school. Also, BYU has NO TALENT.. especially on the offensive and
defensive lines. Goodness sakes these kids are BAD! No coach could make this
team a winner. Bronco is a great guy and I think a good coach but its the talent
of the field that wins and BYU doesn't have it. Utah is a good team. A high
school QB could have found open receivers tonight with the time Wynn had to
throw. Wynn will get destroyed against Oregon and other Pac 12 teams .... rag
arm with ZERO zip on the ball.
I hope this isn't a repeat...my computer screen froze, so I had to do a
copy/paste.Amazingly awful game! I'm not sure what happened to BYU,
but I hope whatever it is, it can be fixed in a hurry!! Kudos to the Utes for
playing a good game. BYU has so much talent, but something seems to be wrong
with the timing, and with being able to get into the end zone. Fumbles and
miscues really hurt us tonight. Pick up the pieces and do better next week.
Still love ya!
Most points gifted to another team in BYU history? Heaps has scored more for
the other team than he has for BYU combined all year! Offense is pitiful under
Doman, makes you wonder why they fired Anae after BYU finished so strong last
year??? The most embarrassing part is that after a few unlucky turnovers and
gifts gave the game away, this team just folded and made it look even worse! The Defense will still get them some wins provided the offense doesn't
gift 31 points to every team, but I am not so sure Heaps and Doman have what it
takes to win games on the offensive side against good teams???
sammyg manned up so props to him/her. Duckhunter is nowhere to be found.
Should have plenty of time on that fancy phone he crows abour while stuck in
that Utah Co traffic.
Congrats to Jordan Wynn!! This kid has taken a lot of criticism even though he
played with an injured shoulder last season. But he has led Utah to 2, 10 win
seasons and he deserves credit! I hope he can do it again this year! He is a
great leader and a great person. Congrats jordan!
first things first....sorry to all the utah fans for my trash talking all this
time. 2nd....byu is the worse team ever....i'm done following a team that puts
winning football games first and that allows a first year o coordinator to still
stand on the sideline...and for leaving in the most over rated qb i have ever
seen. i am no longer donating money to byu athletics as long as bronco
continues to down play winning as being the first thing this football team is
suppose to do, i am no longer a fan. what a pathetic group of coaches with a
couple of pathetic players that think they've already won the national
championship (i.e heaps, renolds and apo).
I have to give credit to the remaining loyal BYU fans who continue to watch this
circus the rest of the season. I guess the term "long suffering" comes
to mind!! Maybe BYU should drop back to 1AA football?? Dixie College and Snow
might be better matches. Bronco will leave BYU soon and the Y will be losing a
really good coach. Bronco will succeed somewhere else but no one will succeed at
BYU going forward. I think fans will remember this game as the turning point in
BYU football - or maybe better said the beginning of the demise.
Wow, that was definitely a unique game between the in-state rivals. No one
expected this. As much as I loved the beat down, I still feel bad for certain
BYU players. Especially the kid who botched the kickoff return. No one likes
to disappoint your teammates with big mistakes. However I don't feel bad for
Heaps, he ran his mouth more than anyone and is eating serious humble pie right
now.I seriously want to hear from Duckhunter. There is some serious
crow to be eaten. Other Cougar trolls don't bother me so much because I know
they are just trolling and contributing playful banter, but Duckhunter is dead
serious in all of his posts and is NEVER wrong. John White is a stud
and I love watching him. I like our team, I really do. We have some great
athletes and we should be in for some good football teams in the future.
Hopefully this game gave Wynn some confidence. If he can eliminate these silly
mistakes and gain some confidence then I like him at the helm. May
we all remember that this is just a GAME! Nothing to be taken too seriously.Go Utes!
"Yup, Washington did not win a single game that year (even lost to BYU in
Seattle). Washington has had a rough decade, my point was/is that Utah has a
great shot at the PAC 12 title if they play like they did tonight and like they
did at USC." Even if they play like they did tonight, they will
still struggle since they won't have BYU giving them Bounce passes. Congrats to the Utes by beating the Y, you now qualify as right behind the
UTAH STATE AGGIES. To bad you wont have a shot to prove it, and we
will have to go by stats.
Tickets $50, Caffeine Free Diet Coke, $3.50...Watching Bronco put the
Loser sign to his head after each Ute touchdown and seeing all of the BYU Fans
streaming out of LES in the 3rd quarter..Priceless!
Go Utes! Amazing game. I want to compliment the Cougars (not being sarcastic).
I thought they handled the beat down well. I am sure they will brush this off
and have a great season going forward. We all know that the game would have
been very different without the turnovers (although, that is of course part of
the game). I thought Wynn looked better--still not up to his potential. It was
getting pretty embarassing by the end. I was wanting the game to end almost as
bad as the Y fans toward the end when it sort of turned into a joke. This is
one to remember. Great job Utes! Y fans, we know how these blow outs feel. I
wish you well in the rest of the season. I will say (and I am not trying to rub
it in) that I think it would be easier for Y fans if there was not always so
much hype and impossibly high expectations every year. You just can't start
talking about BCS bowls in August and September and then expect to not be
disappointed down the road. As I noted, I'm sure you will finish strong. GO
just as I predicted, (and I'm a Y fan), turnovers, special teams, (kicking
game), deception of Utes did in the Cougs...I'm very disappointed in the Cougs,
It's interesting I make a neutral comment (maybe a bit negative) about Chris B
and it get blocked by D News but a poster can make a comment like "nice
wife Jake" and it gets through ~ unreal
Wow...I think too much talk about BYU past is hurting the program. The past is
the past. I'm a big Bronco supporter, but tonight made me frustrated. Let's hope
for some kind of turn around. And hats off to Utah, you guys played great and
kicked our butts. It is what it is.
Keep your heads up, Cougar fans.Sometimes you win, sometimes you
lose, and sometimes you get in a downward spiral and you lose a game big. Utah
has laid a few eggs, too, in their history.Yes, the Utah D had some
great plays in stripping the ball/turnovers but it's impossible to ignore that
there were many times we simply GAVE Utah the ball (3rd play of the game,
anyone?)In the first half I saw MANY hits by BYU's D that will make
highlight reels for years to come (the endzone collision that popped off that
Utes helmet?.....and, no, I don't think he intended to do that/no flag was a
good call).Where I thought we lost it was the Utes 60+ yard drive
right before the half where they scored the TD to go ahead. They looked
exceptionally sharp and our D didn't seem to have an answer to their ability to
move the ball from that point on.Changes will have to be made. For
one, I have no idea as to why your OC thinks he can play call better from the
ground. Bronco showing enthusiasm would be good, too.Go Cougars!
BYU's BIG problem (Coaches, Players, Fans)= You get too high when things are
good, you get too low when things are bad! Examples: *Players strut arouned like they just won the Super Bowl after every routine
football play. Hey defenders, you are supposed to stop the play!! Wynn's bad
throw does not mean you made a good play!!!*Players gave up!!!*Doman- Running around the sideline like he just threw the TD to Apo!!!
Get in the booth and focus on calling the game! When the D is on the field,
that's a good time to prepare for the next series, not chest bump the whole
sideline!! Seriously!!! Doman, you are not a player anymore, K!!!*Fans- well, read the 140 prior comments!!!Yes, football is an
emotional game, but you must also act like you have been there before and you
did what you were supposed to do!! Don't Quit!!!Finally, Bronco has
some great characteristics, but he makes Bill Belichick look like an
out-of-control, emotional, crazy man!!!
meant DOES NOT PUT WINNING FIRST...seriously the most pathetic team in any
sport. thanks utah....if the game would have ended like the ole miss game or
even the texas game with a 1 point loss, i would have given byu chances and
maybe said something like "oh, next game, they should come together so just
try and be patient". Nope, this one is easy so thanks for the whooping,
now I can focus on other things along with saving money because i will not send
byu another penny. Good luck the rest of the year utes and hope to win every
game from here on out. Clearly, the better team got invited to the PAC 12 and
also won the game tonight. Congrats again.
And that Cougar fans is how it's done in the big boy leagues!!
Coach Chow certainly knows how to close out a game. I'll bet he had a BLAST
tonight. Great hire, Coach Whitt...welcome to Utah Coach Chow!!
Watching the replay on byUtv. It's even better the second time. Just watched the
Dres Anderson TD again. Love it!
rightascension | 11:31 p.m. Sept. 17, 2011 Last week Branco wore a
t-shirt that read "Band of Brothers." Next week , he should wear one
that reads, "I'm with stupid."I bet the BYU team members
won't find dates for the next two weeks. Even the ones who are married.---------------Best post of the night!
All I can say is after three disastrous outings (Yes, three--BYU should have
beat Ol' Miss by a larger margin, they should have won against Texas, but handed
the game to them, with basic mistakes a team with this many returning starters
shouldn't make, and then tonight. HOw do you explain 7 turnovers?)the Cougars
need to make some changes in their coaching staff. Perhaps Brandon Doman isn't
the man for the job as OC. The BYU team I watched tonight could have been
beaten by a junior high school football team.
FullyInvested | 12:19 a.m. Sept. 18, 2011 Here's a news flash for
you...Mendenhall is being paid approximately $1M per year to take on
the responsibilities of a head football coach of a major D-1 university. He is
NOT a General Authority. Sports at byu is not missionary work and Jake Heaps
elected last year to go on a mission. Just wanted to offer a few
points of clarification because you are clearly very confused.
Looking back on the past spring and summer I don't blame the BYU fans for their
bragging. I feel sorry for them, because it appears they were duped by the hype
put out by the coaches, especially Bronco, and the media. I hope Bronco
realizes how important it is to recognize your opponents efforts when they beat
you instead of claiming your team was still the best team, even though your
lost. I can bet that quote from him was on the bulletin board in the Ute's
locker room and the Utes put an exclamation point on last year's win just to
make sure he understands what the final score means.A few comments
here somehow are trying to make it out to seem that points off turnovers are
somehow not as credible and other points. Give me a break. That's like saying
Kyle Van Noy's game winning touchdown against Ole Miss somehow should be
discounted. All the BYU fans who have been saying we will be
relegated to the basement of the Pac 12, where does that put BYU?
Fully invested, "Greater calling?" The problem is, Bronco
thinks his calling is to TALK, not to perform. So do his players. I, for one,
wanted the players to quit the "great offensive line," "Talented
receivers," "Top ten receiver group" (last year's saying), talk
not just this year, but EVERY year.I'll give you a little quote from
3 Nephi:"And ye see that I have commanded that none of you
should go away, but rather have commanded that ye should come unto me, that ye
might FEEL and SEE; even so shall ye do unto the world; and whosoever breaketh
this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation."See, some people think Jesus was about sermons and "firesides," but
he didn't say, "Let me talk a good game," he said, "Watch me,
touch my wounds. I'll SHOW you who I am."Ironically, Kyle
Whittingham and the Ute's LDS players and coaches may give the LDS Church more
"exposure" because of how they perform.
Coug fans, you saw tonight what it takes to play in an QA conference. Take a
moment to consider what byu did to Utah State, the WAC, the MWC in it's
exuberance to move to independent. The conduct of byu in taking those actions
was disrespectful and yes, even dishonest. And for what? For football? With
super conferences on the horizon and bridges burned with the regional non-AQ
conferences, byu is where with football and sports in general?
Don't worry BYU fan, at least you guys can still win the MWC, er, WAC, er, you
will still be the champ of your own 1 team conference.Bronco=Coach
of the Year ICC/Independent Cougar Conference.
As a BYU fan and alum, I apologize to the Utes for not giving them a meaningful
game. I remember how disappointed I was after our 38-8 victory over Oregon in
the LV Bowl because i felt that Oregon was so poorly prepared and played so
badly that beating them didn't mean anything. We came to that game ready so that
if they'd won, their victory would have meant something. I believe that we
cheated Utah out of any meaning of their win tonight because about any 11 guys
with uniforms and cleats could have beaten my Cougars tonight."Never send a boy to do a man's job." I believe that the coaches are
unfair to Heaps by putting him on the field while he so very clearly is not
ready to play D1 football. Paul said that the Lord would not tempt/test/try us
beyond what we're able to handle; why is "the Lord's university" doing
so to this boy who wants to play for us?
Dr Doom, aka Duckhunter- Your crow is ready. Please come and gag it down!
I'm not watching this team anymore. They folded after a few plays in Utah's
favor.They don't care, so I don't care.
"FullyInvested | 12:19 a.m. Sept. 18, 2011 BEVERLY HILLS, CARemember, Jake isn't just playing football...he's serving a full-time mission
too. People talk about how hard full-time missionary service is, they just had
to knock doors, Jake has to step into a collapsing pocket and and get hit in the
ribs. Cut him a break!! He's reaching millions of non-members for the church via
ESPN. Would you treat a missionary in your ward like this if he
fumbled a roll at your dinner table? Put your criticism into context. "As an LDS person, I find your post not only inaccurate but pretty
blasphemous. A full time mission serving the Lord is NOT football.
BYU fans - do you feel like you're being left behind? It's a serious question.
I just left the shed and boy does my backside hurt.
Apology: Sincerely offer my personal apology to coaches and players for negative
comments I have made on sports articles during last two games. Coaches and
players give 100+ times more effort to succeed than I, from my comfortable
armchair. It must surely hurt to see high aspirations fall short of the goal,
after tremendous preparation and efforts. Doesn't help when people pile on. Hope
coaches and players experience success for remainder of the year and in the
seasons to come.
Congrats Utes. Hey Cougars, way to finish the games the last two weeks.
I still respect Bronco and BYU football a lot. Personally, I predict this might
be BYU's "UNLV" game - you know, when Utah was dominated by UNLV 27 to
0 in 2007. Utah was never the same after that - BCS, PAC 12, etc. The jump from good to great is much, much more than the jump from average to
good. It takes a painful memory to go from good to great. Seriously,
this "UNLV" type of game for BYU - losing awfully to bitter PAC 12
Utah rival - has the opportunity to be a changer for BYU to go from a good
program to great. We'll see if that happens. To be honest, I hope so - it will
make the rivalry between Utah and BYU great again.Just trying to
comfort you BYU fans - we Utes had 3 awful blowouts last year. It ain't fun, I
Where oh where is BYU's running game? It should take pressure of Jake Heaps but
it's been nonexistent so far. I know it's ONLY game three but Cougars seem to be
regressing. What to do?
Pac12Proud Take a moment to consider what byu did to Utah State, the
WAC, the MWC in it's exuberance to move to independent. The conduct of byu in
taking those actions was disrespectful and yes, even dishonest. -------------How is BYU leaving the MWC different than Utah
leaving the MWC?BYU did NOTHING to Utah State or the WAC. Nevada
and Fresno State, two schools who were part of negotiating an agreement with BYU
LEFT the WAC, nullifying the deal. If there was dishonesty on anyone's part, it
was those two schools. Once they left, the WAC option was no longer the same.
I wouldn't be surprised if you've posted making fun of BYU's "WAC"
schedule. Do you think those schools, including Utah State, would schedule BYU
if they thought they'd been done wrong by BYU? Your rush to
judgement didn't include facts.
Utes Fan, classy post. Maybe the classiest I've seen.
Well, we knew the programs were moving in different directions when Utah went to
the Pac 10 and BYU went independent, but what a shocker. I don't think anybody
expected they would be this far apart so soon. P.S. I think BYU
waited FAR too long to put Nelson in. In three games Heaps has proven that he
just isn't ready for prime time. They should start Nelson next time.
Injured Wynn vs. HeapsInjured Wynn over Heaps any day.3
beat-downs in 8 years... this isn't the 80s Utes.@DuckyI'm
still waiting to see which one of our offensive players wouldn't start at BYU.
Please provide the list.@sammygHow's the fetal position
feeling courtesy of Ute football?
Hi, My name is Tom...I am a BYU Fan (Hi, Tom)A few
observations/questions1. Can ESPN ask for a refund or their money
back?2. Chis B was STILL way off on his prediction. Not even he
could have predicted how bad this was.
Great to see BYU's INDEPENDENT thing working out nicely!! Doman looked like a
deer in headlights! Very entertaining!
Does this mean byu fans will stop posting their bitter comments on utah football
articles?...no, then they wouldn't meet the definition of a cougar
I think a better name for this article would have been FAST AND PREY. Ouch. Oh
well better luck next year Cougs.
I thought the Utes would/could win by a score of 24-10, turns out I was off by
30 points. Awesome all around game by the Utes, think we have a gret chance of
winning the South, and if Stanford keeps winnning, that means a trip to the Rose
Well, perhaps, just perhaps, things did not go well at the Lord's University
because the Lord does not care who wins as the Lord has many universities and
colleges.Utah's victory is the direct result of what each player on
the field did. Utah caused the fumbles, Utah recovered the fumbles, Utah
intercepted a pass, Utah scored off that interception. Utah scored touchdowns
and made field goals. Utah defense but a blanket on the Y's offense. Norm Chow
is a better OC than Brandon Doman. It is the Utes victory. They did not win
because of what the other team did not do, they won because of what they did. This is a Utah victory! Period. Jake can say the game
would be different if there hadn't been any fumbles, but there were fumbles,
lots of them and many were caused by Utah! The final was 54 - 10. Get used to
"Seriously, this "UNLV" type of game for BYU - losing awfully to
bitter PAC 12 Utah rival - has the opportunity to be a changer for BYU to go
from a good program to great."Or, it has the possibility of
deciding that BYU should be relegated to ESPN3.com on Wednesday night.
NevadaCoug: You got your wish, BYU stopped settling for field goals. :)
Cougars, take heart, you have a better kicker, a much better kicker, than
Looks like Bronco let the Cheerleaders play this game?
There is always next year for BYU to try again, but this score will last all
I could never play for a coach like Bronco. Here's a guy that shows no emotion
for his troops to either rally around or to be a bit "scared straight"
when they need some sort of momentum change. I love how after each time Utah
punches BYU right in the mouth with one of thier scores Bronco just stands there
holding up his PAT signal. Well, I guess to Bronco it's all about the
message/mission at BYU. BYU football players don't suck I just wonder how they
truly feel playing for a coach with his personality.
Been a Cougar fan since 1974. That was the first time I've seen them give up
and the first time I ever left a game early. I'll always watch and support my
team as long as they are giving they're best effort. That clearly didn't happen
last night. Apparently I wasn't the only one who felt that way. The score was
40-10 when I left along with droves of other Cougar fans including Lavell and
Patty Edwards.Last year Bronco fired Jaime Hill after the USU game.
Is he going to fire himself this year? Drastic changes need to be made because
this is a team that is clearly not prepared to compete with quality competition.
Maybe hire an experienced OC to be a "Co-Coordinator" like Texas did.
Maybe hire an experienced DC so that Bronco can concentrate on being HC. Maybe
hire a new HC and demoting Bronco to DC. Maybe benching Heaps and giving Lark a
shot. Maybe making the offense more creative and less predictable like we were
promised. Do SOMETHING different because what you're doing now isn't working!
Not sure I'll keep going to games this year if changes aren't made.
I think the thing that is the most upsetting to me is how the whole team gave up
so early in the game. This team needs to look at this and figure this out. Now, this team has a choice to make, either this will be a stepping
stone or a stumbling block for the rest of the year. You have to decide now on
how to react to this.To a BYU fan, the whole game was like a very
terrible train wreck in slow motion and I bet it was the same for the team and
coaches. The defense played well - Until They Gave Up. The offense,
well, needs some special help. This team needs to be dressed down by
Bronco The coaching staff needs it also. Also, the players do not need to be
talking to the media anymore.Bronco, it is time to take the lead on
this team among the coaches and direct them on what to do. It looks like some
of the coaches are in a bit above their heads. If the coaches need to learn,
then teach them.Go Cougars!
byu will end up 7-5 and everyone will be saying how good heaps will be next
year, both as a result of the weakest remaining schedule of any division one
team. pathetic. heaps is terrible, theres probably 70 college qbs id take over
him. and im not just going off of this game.
@Pac12ProudCalm down there boy. Don't get ahead of yourself. You said:"Coug fans, you saw tonight what it takes to play in
an QA (sic) conference".As if Utah being in the Pac-12 had
anything to do with BYU's 7 gifts to U?Did Utah destroy BYU or did BYU
destroy itself? Both. It was a complete meltdown. It is appparent to
everyone that Whit is the better coach. His intensity remains all game long.
Bronco's soft sell is not effective. He was outcoached, no doubt.BYU
and Utah both looked out for their best interests when they bolted the MWC, for
you to slam BYU for going Independent and leaving their Conference behind is a
bit hypocritical, don't you think? You won, you destroyed BYU this
game. It's one game, we'll see after this year is played out and the next few
years if Utah will be among the contenders in the Pac or not.BYU
served it up to you on a platter, their mistakes made it easy for U. We saw Utah
do the same 3 times last year. How did U protect your top 5 ranking last year?
Notre Dame, TCU, Boise St.?
The Utes Chow down. Bronco better spin another warm and fuzzy slogan. Go Utes!
The Pac 12 is the best!
I too was a BYU fan. But since they got rid of Coach Anae and Mark Atuaia last
year, my loyalty started to slip especially reflecting what happened about 10
years ago when Coach Chow after 26 years at BYU got rejected for being the next
Head Coach. Then they removed Jared Afalava's scholarship within a few weeks of
Jared's commment on Deseret News that he was leaning towards the Utes or the
Ducks, my loyalty slipped even bigger. Imagine, removing a scholarship from a
17 year old kid who was just being honest about what he was thinking. On top of
that, BYU told him during BYU Camp when all Jared wanted to do was hang out with
his Kahuku childhood friends from Hawaii. Then listeining to Coach Whittingham
and Coach Sitake testimony of the Gospel in a recent fireside and last nights
game, I am done. Like Chow, it is a new ERA!!!! I declare UTAH UTES FAN from
this day on. Go UTES!!!! Coach Whittingham and his coordinators ROCK!!!!
Where was the leadership among the Cougars? Some talent and
coaching disparities were painfully obvious: Utah's defense probably is the
fastest the Y might face all season, and the Cougar offense--starting with the
OC and quarterback--had no clever answers with play-calling, no heroic
performances with the pass. But leadership? Nobody
on the blue team seemed to show it--not the coaches, and certainly not the
quarterback. Even when you're getting pasted somebody has to step forward to
keep the team focused, committed, resolved to at least play for pride . . . to
do SOMETHING well. Utah's game against TCU last year was similar
to last night's. The Utes were outgunned and started to come
apart--back-to-back penalties, a little deer-in-the-headlights creeping across
the players' faces, getting mauled by a fast, superior defense. But
Whittingham's team preparation and physical presence--charisma--prevented
complete meltdown. Last night Bronco looked like he was forcing
himself to watch a chess tournament that was putting him to sleep. But from a diehard Ute fan: Don't give up BYU. Figure this out, and get back
up. You have a lot of season left.
This is one of those games where you find out you're not as good as you thought
you were. Hopefully BYU fans can rally around their team while they learn from
this and rebuild. Jake Heaps will be a great quarterback, but he just isn't
there yet. As "Utes Fan" said, we know what its like having the wheels
come off in your own stadium on ESPN. It will get better. See you next
54-10 - It was like watching a Sophomore high school (Utah is not that good)
team VS. a 7th grade (BYU offense and Special teams) team, except 7th graders
have less turnovers - there are some teams that have less turnovers in a whole
season. Hey Doman, go upstairs like every other O coordinator. Yes, you will
miss out on a couple chest bumps and bum pats when Opo scores the only BYU
touchdown for you every game. Heaps is like watching a 6th grader with ADHD!
Take a Ritalin and chill. There is zero continuity on offense, but a lot of
selfishness. Heaps, be a leader and talk to your team, instead of glaring out in
the field. Watch the Defense and learn how to come together! UGHH,
it's last year all over again and UCF is a lot better that Utah and Utah State .
. . 1-4 is very likely. It's a good thing Idaho St is coming to town. However, I
heard they took a JV team to OT. Good luck, that was awful and embarrassing. At
least you looked great on ESPN and Utah, dont brag, you guys were handed this
While at the game last night, for some strange reason, at the beginning of the
fourth quarter I felt compelled to rise and shout as the cougar fans filed out.
I have a lot of friends who are BYU fans and I know they've got to be hurting
this morning. To them I say, I feel for you. As a fan I know what it's like to
have expectations trounced by a bad loss or two. BYU has talented
people running their program. Before this game they didn't seem to be thinking
changes needed to be made. For the sake of your program and its future I hope
this game helps them realize they need to make changes. I'm not saying
personnle need to be changed, but obviously what's being done either in
preparation or during the game isn't working. In three consecutive games they
do okay in the first half and then the wheels seem to come off in the second
half. BYU's second half has gotten progressively worse each game. That's got
to be fixable.I remember Coach Witt's first season at Utah. Things
were not going well the first couple of games. Coach Witt called every coach
and player into his office for a personal chat to figure out what needed to be
done. Things got much better from there. Maybe Bronco could learn from that.
Utah beat BYU as they left the MWC as a little goodbye gift. Bronco made
excuses and even stated that "the best team didn't win". Bronco then
stated they were going for a National Championship, Jake Heaps is a Heisman
candidate the BYU boosters were "saducees and pharisees" etc... Now Utah just beat BYU tremendously in the new PAC 12 UTE and
Independent BYU era. Do you see the common denominator of problems here?
BRONCO and BYU FOOTBALL HYPE. ALL TALK and NO WALK.I love BYU as an
outstanding University... but dang Bronco you are making it hard to like the
football team and you as the head coach. I totally respect Whittingham and his
"Shut-up and play one game at a time" philosophy...Its working.Bronco and BYU football team: Try some humility or you get humbled.
As a fan of BYU, I am disappointed and embarrassed! As a player, I would be
thinking about hanging it up. It's one thing to lose big to a rival, which I am
fine with if you give it your all, but to go out and give up playing after being
down 20 is ridiculous. This team needs to reevaluate where its heart is because
right now, I don't see much at all. These two teams are not that far apart.
One more thought. A lot of the hype during the off season centered around BYU
having so many returning starters. Maybe that wasn't such a positive thing
after all. I was always puzzled why having returning players from a 7-5 team
was such a positive. As we look at the games so far this season, things are
looking shockingly similar to last season. Hopefully for BYU's sake this can be
the USU game for this year and you can turn things around from here.
I don't know which is more surprising, the final score or how quickly byu
"fans" will turn on their team. byu got killed because they couldn't
hold onto the ball, not because they were out coached. Utah's defense just
overpowered byu's offense.
Let's all remember, Bronco hired Doman. No more excuses about him. Heaps has
numerous routes per play to choose from. They were outplayed,
outcoached, and outexecuted.Long live Jake Heaps, Utah's 12th man!
I have to say, cougar fans seem to have finally come back to earth. It seems all
year they were trying to downplay the utes move to the pac 12, like somehow
going independent was an equal counter-move. However, after tonight I think the
difference in recruiting is no longer debatable. How much faster was the utah
defense? How much faster were utah's receivers & running backs? How much
stronger were our O & D lines? Talent is important, coaching is important,
having both is the key.
Hey Brigham Young University People:Humility can be a good thing.
Best to learn to walk the walk. prior to talking the talk.Congratulations University of Utah!
re:Otis SpurlocThe majority of fans don't watch losers. BYU will
always have a loyal group even if they go 1-10 on the year but we are talking
about 25000 fans in 65000 seat Lavell Edwards Stadium in late November if this
nonsense keeps up.
I was at the game last night and was completely embarrassed for our team. More
than the lack of preparation, abandonment of fundamentals, turnovers, no
adjustments, missed assignments, trying to do too much, two things bothered me
more than anything:1. Pride - one example gets in the way. When
30-10, BYU's kick returner turns to the crowd angrily to try to get us pumped
up, almost like "how dare you not cheer for us" all the way up to
about 3 seconds before the kickoff. And what does the do? Muff the kickoff! How
about you concentrate on your assignment and we'll do ours!2. Quit -
the team just quit. So much for Tradition, Spirit, Honor. Absolutely
humiliating to have Ute fans singing "nah nah nah nah hey hey hey
goodbye" to you in your own stadium.Refund please!
To all the BYU fans RIPPING their own team: Lighten up. This happens. I
remember sitting in the North end zone up at Rice stadium in 1988 and watching
BYU (a 3 touchdown favorite) get destroyed by the Utes 57-28. The coach was
LaVell Edwards. The Offensive coordinator was Norm Chow. And for a lot of the
game, the QB was Ty Detmer. That was the worst game I have ever been to. But,
believe it or not, things got MUCH better the next season.Quit
ripping on Heaps, Doman, and especially Mendenall. Mendenhall brought the
program back from disaster. Last night was a debacle, no doubt. But BYU will
be back and sometime down the road, do the same thing to Utah. It's football.
That's how it works. So crack open a Diet Coke, drown your sorrows, and get
ready for next week. And by the way, Utah, don't think that every
team is going to give you the ball SEVEN times.
Y cry?Because of U!!!!!!
Unlike some of my brethren, I never believed the Cougs had much of a shot at
going undefeated this year. They are too young and they are playing a tougher
schedule than they did in the MWC. But I believed they were capable of a 9 or
10 win season. Many teams never rebound from a loss like this. If
BYU doesn't rebound next week, a winning season may be out of the question.Game changers. The bad snap. Heaps needs to fall on the
ball or kick it out of the end zone. Giving up 2 points is better than 7.
Heaps looks like he's afraid of getting hit. He may have talent, but he lacks
heart.DiLuigi's fumble inside the 5 yard line. DiLuigi does not run
well between the tackles. I don't know why we continue to try. Use him on
sweeps or options or catching the ball out of the backfield. Use Kariya up the
middle. Nelson should be brought in for situations like this.Uale's
pass interference penalty on 3rd down. Completely uncalled for by Uale. The
pass was not catchable.Falslev's muff. The straw that broke the
camel's back. Cougs gave up after this.
@Bluto,here is a tissue.
What I'd give to have Bronco lose his temper and go off on his team. When, as
players, your know your coach won't get mad at you, it's easy to slack off and
forget fundamentals, become Prima Donnas and overestimate how good you are.Pride came before the fall.
@AH C'MONRemind me never to go into battle with you.
The BYU Coaching Staff let down the team and all of Cougar Nation. They
obviously don't focus on winning football games. BYU needs to make some big
decisions. Do they want a football program; or not? I can see a scenario where
this is the beginning of the end of BYU football.
way to go utes!
Apparently, the stars in the heavens have not lined up in such a manner since
the 1920s. Glad I was there to savor such a great evening. Thank you, Utah!
First, I was wrong to doubt my Utes. As a wise person (giantfan) instructed
me...it was and is too soon to tell. The Utes looked good and I have much more
confidence in Jordan Wynn. Second, why is it that it feels better
to say the "Utes aren't that great" and BYU is worse? Seems like a
pretty sophomoric statement made over and over on this blog. Finally, GREAT GAME Utes! Domination. Go Utes!
re: CougFaninTX | 11:25 p.m. Sept. 17, 2011 "Let's make Doman
either the OC or the QBC. He can't do both."I can't help but
wonder if Doman is the OC in name only & Reynolds is calling the shots. He
is in the booth where an OC should be.
Band of quitters
re: patriot | 12:25 a.m. Sept. 18, 2011 "Doman is a joke.
Doman would be better served as the offensive coordinator at Sky Line high
school. Also, BYU has NO TALENT.. especially on the offensive and defensive
lines."1st, its Skyline.2nd, BYU has talent just no
conditioning or maybe they run strictly on passion/emotion. When that wears off
you get the 2nd half of last nights game.
Thanks goodness that Idaho, Idaho State, New Mexico State and San Jose State are
on the schedule. That should give the Cougs four more wins. I think the Utah
State and Central Florida games are losses based on what I saw tonight [please
BYU don't lose to a team-Central Florida-that just lost to Florida International
(that sounds like an airport)] that the Utah State, Oregon State, Hawaii and
Central Florida games are toss-ups. They will probably need to win at least one
of these games to go to a bowl game.Bad losses, even to rivals
happen. BYU looked unprepared. But what got me and Bronco needs to address
this is bad, his team gave up. They held White in check until the fourth
quarter. His long gashing runs showed the poor effort BYU was putting for in
the effort department. Yes, turnovers happen and even stupid play like Heaps
nor Falslev not falling on the ball, but there is no excuse for giving up!
What in the name of Virgil Carter, Mark Lyons, Gary Sheide, Gifford Nielson,
Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, and Lavell
Edwards was that????Abandon Ship! Abandon Ship. Old Cougar over
board!! Pass the red decals...big enough to cover the blue ones.A
Utah Man am I, Sir!!!!I cannot support a team of quitters.
Has Jake Heaps considered contacting Ben Olson and asked how to transfer to
another university? wow! this pathetic offensive must have Riley Nelson wishing
for the offensive game plan at Utah State University.
There is always basketball season to look forward to BYU fans and even without
Jimmer they will be good and Utah will suck again unfortunately. However in
football enjoyed this game all the way through and I never watch blowouts.
Can someone please go to Ducky & Sammyg's house to make sure they are ok?
I'm a little nervous, I haven't seen a post from them since what, ...... the
late 3rd quarter. In the words of Timberlake, "what goes around comes back
around". I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.
I even went to church today just to see the faces of my neighbors who have
talked smack all year long. But, unlike them, I will take the higher road
today. Hey, it's the sabbath, this inactive still has some sympathy. Tough,
Tough loss for BYU. I hope this isn't a season breaker for them. They need to
forget about this and turn it around. Last year, after we were trounced by
TCU...we carried that loss with us to ND, and you saw what happened. I agree with many posts on here regarding Bronco. To much hype, not enough
action. I know he's a good coach, but he needs to take a lesson from Kyle. One
game at a time. Great game Ute's, now lets get ready for the Huskies. They put
up 38 points on Nebraska. "It's great to be a Ute"
Congrats to the Utes. That was quite a statement! I think BYU fans should have
known the game was going to be bad when the snap went over the head of Heaps and
he did his best three stooges impression and could not throw it away or dive on
it for a safety.I think Doman panicked early. I don't think they
had to abandon the run game when they went down by two possessions early in the
second half. The more you can take the game out of the decision-making of
Heaps, the better. Still Doman doesn't have a good QB to work with, so I don't
know you can ask for his job, yet. Remember many BYU fans tried to
run Lavell out early, turned their back on Chow after all the illustrious years
he was apart of (how is that working for you?). You can't keep changing
coordinators like a pair of socks and think it is going to work, or draw talent
to come coach for you. It's fun to get to know the entire QB depth chart at BYU
from the comments board by the third week, but some sanity needs to prevail.
After seeing what Vanderbilt did to Ole Miss yesterday, I am one that wasn't
that surprised at the outcome of the game. The score, yes, the outcome, no.
All the Utes had to do was incorporate everything that Texas did in the 2nd half
last week and they would win. It seems they did just that.
I think we can now understand why Whittingham was BYU's 1st choice and Bronco
was the 3rd or 4th. He better start teaching our young men a little personal
accountability or it will get worse. Press conferences where he takes all the
blame aren't helpful. I remember Whittingham after the Montana State game
saying "our offense is awful. We play like that and we won't win a game in
the PAC 12." Come on Bronco, challenge someone on our team to take a
little responsibility(Mr. Heaps).
Cougar Fans,I know it hurts. I still FEEL Utah's loss in the NC to
Kentucky, Utah's losses to ND and TCU last year. But you've got to be better,
more loyal fans.Calling for Coach Mendenhall's job? Really? ESPN
informed the audience that he has the 8th best winning percentage over his head
coaching career.Calling for Doman's job? After THREE games?Just a month ago, most of you were telling anyone who would listen that
Heaps would be great this season. Heaps is a true sophomore, not another post
red-shirt, post mission 23 year old quarterback that you have taken for granted
for decades. He will make mistakes, but he has potential. Are you going to
give up on him already? Many of you have been talking about EXPOSURE.
What was exposed on ESPN was a less than capacity crowd that headed early for
the exits. Nice!Bottom line - nothing went your way last night.
You were outcoached and outplayed, and the breaks went against you. That
happens sometimes. Of course you're frustrated, but a lot of you are spouting
crazy talk!Have faith, stay the course, etc.Good luck
with the rest of the season.
to all you byu fans sayin the hit in the endzone on christopher shouldnt have
been a penalty.. GET REAL. that was the worst no call in the world. he led with
his helmet the whole way. get a clue byu fans
To the Utah fans: Congratulations on your win. There is no longer any doubt
that the best football program in Utah is the Utes. The two teams are on
different paths Utah getting stronger year by year, and BYU sinking into
obscurity. Good luck the rest of this year and in the future as you compete for
further BCS recognition. With Utah State also rising, it seems that BYU will
take its place by the side of Weber State. To the BYU defense: I
feel sorry for you. Having half a football team is no fun, Im sure.
Considering that BYU has absolutely no offense, youve held up as best you can.
Sorry, but it seems that youll probably be on the field for most of the
remaining games this season.
To Brandon Doman: Ive been following BYU football for 20 years, and I dont
think Ive ever seen an offense as pathetic as what youve delivered. Were not in
fantasy land anymore Brandon. Your pre-season banter about how good the BYU
offense would be this year was clearly delirium on your part. Obviously, you
are way out of your league. With years of practice maybe you can be a good
offensive coordinator, but not now. After the Texas game, the Texas defensive
players noted how they learned where the throws would go by halftime, which
allowed them to shut BYU down in the second half. With an offense as
predictable as yours, you just as well give the opposing defense your playbook
prior to game time. I beg you not to put BYU fans through the pain of watching
your completely predictable, boring, lab experiment offense the rest of this
season. Please do the honorable thing, admit youre in way over your head, take
responsibility, and resign.
To Coach Mendenhall: After seeing the comments you made to the BYU boosters,
and then watching the team dismantled by Utah, it seems that maybe you were
preparing everyone for what was to come. Please, spare us your attempts to
rationalize the situation. It is true that BYU football is unique because of
the high standards required of the staff and players. However, to say that you
and the team have a higher mission sounds like youre trying to justify
mediocrity. Ive got news for you, there are already thousands of young men who
spend each day of their lives bringing attention to the LDS church. They are
called missionaries. Unlike you, they labor for free. If your mission is truly
first and foremost to represent the LDS church, then please stop taking that
huge salary from BYU and do it voluntarily like everyone else. Sanity check -
you are being paid a huge salary to win football games using young men who
adhere to the standards of the university, period.
To Tom Holmoe: This is ultimately your responsibility. What have you done to
BYU football? As an executive in private business, if I showed this kind of
performance Id be on probation, or fired. I dont expect any team to win every
game, but the performance against Utah was a joke. It showed a clear lack of
focus, discipline and desire to win. Generating that in a team is the job of
the head coach. Coach Mendenhall seems to think he is a mission president, not
a football coach. Please bring him back to reality, or let him go. The BYU
football program is clearly not ready to compete at the BCS level. Programs
like Utah, Boise State, and TCU have left BYU behind. You obviously
underestimated the programs maturity level. Now youve taken BYU independent,
and the weakness of the football program will be visible every week on national
television. Thanks a lot for the recognition. Maybe you should consider a
career change also. And as for me, Im now a Utah fan. GO UTES !!
I really don't think this outcome was all that shocking to be honest. Utah is
well coached and BYU isn't. Kyle would never put up with 7 turn overs - never -
but Bronco seems lost - much like Crowton - on how to fix this broken program.
He fires assistants and rotates new ones in and things just get worse. I don't
know if Doman is good or bad because the BYU O-line is SOOOO pathetic and the
BYU running backs are third stringers on most teams at best. My gut feel is that
Doman is actually REALLY good but the talent he has to work with is so awful and
sub par. Heaps is a really good QB - you can tell with his arm strength and
touch but I think he tries to do too much sometimes to compensate for the ZERO
running game and when you become a one dimensional offense you are in BIG
trouble. BYU has good receivers but again the lack of a running attack is
killing them. Every time the Y does get a good running back he is kicked out of
school (Unga). Well, this is going to be a long season for sure.
As a long time CougarClub booster who has invested a lot of time, money, and
devotion to my alma mater, I have these thoughts:This team lacks a
winning attitude. Sure, they can talk a lot of hype, and positive mental
attitude cliches (mingled with scripture), but they don't back it up with
action. Attitude reflects leadership. This bad attitude is the fault of the
coaching staff, and is the same bad attitude evident in Bronco's calling us
(boosters) "Pharisees" for wanting some accountability. Bronco forgot
(deliberately?) that this is a football team first and foremost, not a band of
missionary brothers who just happen to play football. Like Collie, this team
really does seem to believe the lie that success on the field comes from living
"righteously" off the field, instead of from hard work, discipline,
brilliant preparation, focused execution, and heart. some bright
spots:To put up 343 passing yards against the Utes, with NO running
game to keep defensive backs honest, is impressive. We moved the ball and moved
the sticks almost as good as the U, and our 3rd down efficiency was better.I gave away season tickets. They want to give them back.
So much for the undefeated season I had said in the past. Booooh! But I have to
hand it to the UTES! I was more impressed with them than embarrassed with the
Cougars! I can now think of all the sarcastic and schadenfreudic T-shirt slogans
based on the "Band of Brothers" thingy. Remember the "Quest for
Perfection" campaign? Can we vote the coaches off? After all the fans have
a lot more to do with the success of this football "thingy" at BYU! So
what excuses are Doman and Mendenhall saying now?
Ducky, Captain L, and the rest,I told you after the 2010 spring
scrimmage Heaps was not the guy. Nice throwing mechanics and stats produced in a
spring camp do not translate into game time ability. The fact that Heaps had a
PR guy, that he was out of shape and avoided the weight room and that he was
intensely disliked by a number of teammates spoke volumes about his readiness to
lead a D1 school. He's selfish and he thinks he knows it all. But,
BYU fans and coaches were blinded by the Scout.com ranking and even after his
mediocre performance last year, he was annointed the starter and there was no
competition in 2011. Doman and Mendenhall weren't even decent enough to give
Lark a release, when he realized there would be no real competition and asked
for one.So the one guy with actual D1 ability rides the bench and
BYU's chickens have come home to roost. Good luck guys. You got what you asked
Cool! I didn't know you could recommend your own post! I mean really, how cool
is that? I just became a UTE and life is already getting better!!
The DN Censors are alive and well today. BYU needs a head coach that wants to
win football games, as "Pragmatic" correctly points out the focus is
not on winning football games. The firesides are a good idea on the road, but
not the night before a game. 'x' points out that he would like to see Bronco
'lose his temper', you can be sure during the halftime of the Texas game their
coach let them know they needed to play better football. I'm would hope the
players want to win and put in a lot of effort in that direction, but BYU needs
a head coach with the same attitude. Instead he criticizes his supporters.
So BYU handed the game to Utah? I prefer to think Utah ripped it from them both
physically and mentally. Man up Byu and move on but remember this day forever.
Congrats to the UTES....Awesome WIN. The WIN last night was unbelievably
satisfying and the bonus is watching the "Y" fans destroy their own
team in this blog!! Double pleasure...ha ha ha! Humility has a sour taste when
it is force fed!!GO UTES!!
I am thinking the next t-shirt should say..."HUMILITY..Does a body
Jake Heaps should consider going on a mission after the season. It would help
him mature mentally. He could use a redshirt year when he returns to get back
into it and would probably be a much better quarterback his junior and senior
year than he would be otherwise. Doman will also be more experienced then and
should be a better offensive coordinator/coach.I was most shocked by
BYU's lack of offensive fundamentals in the game. Any running back who takes a
hand-off at the 3 yard line to power into the end zone should have two hands
wrapped around the ball. Inexcusable. On any running play the ball should at
least be tucked high and tight (BYU needs to watch film of Mark Ingram when he
was at Alabama.) When a ball is fumbled on the ground (Heaps and Falslev) you
immediately dive on it. You don't try to pick it up, run with it, throw it, etc.
Poor, poor offensive fundamentals.
Coach Mendenhall: Please stop the excuses and comparisons of the BYU boosters
to Pharisees - Save it for Sunday School. I dare say that after your comments
and the performance of BYU this week, donations to BYU football will probably
drop like a stone; Well done coach. This is a tough business grow a backbone,
stand up and take responsibility, or get out.
I am liking that the Utes and Cougs are no longer in the same conference and
playing earlier in the season. It's the postgame, and we're talking about the
game, not the hype around it.
BYU looked tired and out of shape in the 4th quarter. Maybe a lot of it was
just superior physical conditioning (you know "paying the price" in
the gym and in practices). I'd like to know if others have noticed this when the
cougs play quick, physically fit teams.
Mendenhall and Doman have been coaching the Y for the past 7 years, and they
have brought some pride back into the program, and resurrected the program from
the dead. However, after embarassing games like last night, where their team
was outplayed and outcoached, the question does have to come up--do we let them
go?Personally, I'd like to see Mendenhall stay--he's a class act.
Even though this is Doman's first season as offensive coordinator, I think there
must be questions about him. Bronco called him out once, already, this season,
and this is how Doman and his offense responded. The Cougs offense did look
great in the 2nd quarter, but they were subpar the other three quarters and 7
giveaways shows lack of preparation and intensity.
Well, well, well...BYU fans are singing a different song today, eh?
Two blowouts in one year! USU turned out to be much worse than they looked in
routing BYU and Utah will wind up looking just as bad when they play their new
conference. Robert Anae and Jaime Hill are both gone and the problems remain.
Bench Heaps, give Nelson the ball and start looking for replacements for Bronco
Novocaine Mendenhall and Brandon Inept Doman. Another wasted season and
more wasted talent. They have money, facilities and players, what they don't
have is coaches.
THe number one reason why BYU fans are the way they are. They think that BYU is
a top 5 team every year they think they a Oklohoma or USC or even Alabama or
Auburn. YOUR NOT! Lower your expectations like a lot! You guys are crazy to put
or say some of the things you guys do because it always comes back to bite you.
Notes: except for that TD drive, BYU's 300+ passing yards were not
productive/effective. Utah D gave up the yards, but contained BYU from
scoring. So I am not impressive of BYU passing game.BYU running game
As a Cougar fan, I was embarrassed last night. While the offense and special
teams were useless, it really did look like the defense quit. BYU better right
the ship or they won't make their bowl game.At least my church Ute
buddies took it easy on us today...even they felt sympathy. But you
know what - I think this BYU team will respond. The coaches and players want to
win more than any of the whining fans on this board. This was one game, and it
counted for one loss, whether by 44 points or 1. I wish our fans would show more
class and support. Clearly this season is a disappointment no matter how they
finish, and nobody will have the foolish optimism going into next year, but BYU
is a good program and has recruited good players of late, and I think that 2-3
years from now, we'll be back to celebrating again.
"We were out-coached, out-played and out-executed from beginning to
end." Ya, ya think? Maybe it's time to stop planning for all the pre-game
firesides and spend your time preparing and coaching your team. That was
rediculous. Utah was not the better team, BYU was simply not prepared and made
too many unforced mistakes. Utah didn't force hardly any of them. BYU gave them
to them and it took them out of their game for the entire second half. I'm a BYU
fan that is starting to get a little tired of Bronco and full-time
preachor/part-time football coach mentality. Memo to Mendenhal...leave the
religious duties to church leaders and start focusing your time on coaching and
preparing your team.
I don't get how people can give the Utes credit? What exactly did they do to win
the game? It was much more about BYU giving them everything to them in a nicely
wrapped present. How many fumbles did BYU give up on in the end-zone or within 5
yards of it? I seriously lost count. Give the Utes credit? It would be tough for
even Kanab high school not to win that game in convincing fasion with all those
gimmies. BYU completely took themselves out of the game. No, this game was not
about Utah being a good team. It is much more about BYU being completely
unprepared. Their football program is an emparasement now because they continue
to insist on making football into a church thing. If you're going to have a
football team, focus on football. Mendenhal is a cancer and I've said it from
the beginning. My bishop would be a better coach than Bronco and Broncon would
be a better church leader than my bishop! We need someone who will do their job
and leave the church duties to church leaders!
I am a huge BYU fan, but I can't hide the disappointment of what I have seen on
the field this year and last...This Blowout is a direct reflection
on some very poor coaching and the A D Administration... First,
Doman should never have been promoted to a Divion I O C job so quickly
(particularly for a program with as much expectation as there exists at BYU). He
should have been a position coach for a couple more years and treated as an
Assistant O C under a well Tenured Division I O C who's had success with the
West Coast Offense. Second, Mendenhall needs to start acting a
little more like a coach and a little less like a General Authority.Third, we need a new QB, one that is less cocky and more of a "show
you" type of player rather than a "tell you" type.Lastly, we might need a New A D, one who is better connected with other
schools in the NCAA, and one who is a better Strategist.IMHO most of Holmoes
moves have been bad these past few years. We had no business going Independent
and exposing America to this reality.
Ex-Cougar from South Jordan is offically my hero. I could have not said any of
that any better. Spot on.I'm not a huge Utah fan....more of an SEC
and Alabama guy....but despise BYU.The "Higher Mission" bit and
then fans that always thing they gave it away or the refs are a blame is the
main reason. Not to metion a on paper National Championship where they only beat
4 team over 500, non of them finished anywhere near the top 20, and only 2 of
them went to a Bowl Game (including the 6-5 Michigan team that finished 4th in
the big ten).In the 50's, 60's, and early 70's BYU football had a
"Higher Mission" and nobody outside of LDS people knew about BYU or
that they even had a football team. They are headed that direction fast. You
must win and beat good teams to be relevent.
Obviously the Utah Players and coaches have started going to church....Seriously
it's one game one loss thats all.
I have heard a lot about how BYU is on TV and Utah should thank BYU for letting
play on ESPN. I want to be the 1st Ute to say Thanks!!! I would also like to
say Your Welcome! After last nights beat down I feel more AQ teams aren't
afraid to play you any more and will be calling to ask for a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1
deal! I guess that will help with your schedule! Good luck!!!
Congratulations Utes. THE far, far better team on the night. The
most pathetic demonstration I've ever seen of BYU's football "skills!"
Thank you Madden for being sensible. To the ex Cougar fans, fair-weather
fairies, good riddance. We don't need no stinkin whiners. All the problems of
this game are fixable and will be. Congratulations to Whittingham
and his team. Congratulations to decent fans everywhere. The rest of you losers
will always be such.
bixby35,Be careful about awarding BYU basketball a win over Utah
this season. I'm not saying Utah will be a good hoops team, but your post looks
eerily similar to about a million posts by BYU fans over the summer....
"Can't wait for Sept 17 to give the PAC12 patsy Utes a beat down"
Hey Madden, you got it. The old BYU theme song. "Wait till next
year" or at least as Madden says, wait two or three years. Yeah Madden, I
think that you will be hearing that old refrain from Provo for several years.
BYU fans learned it well in the past and it will probably be forthcoming for a
long, long time. "Wait till next year."
Benderman1 your above post is the prime example of much talked about Y fan
delusion. You say Utah was not the better team. Um, BYU didn't even give Utah
as good as game as Montana State. Utah is definitely the better team as your
team cannot score nor hold on to the ball. Also, most BYU turnovers were Utah
caused. That's what good teams do; force turnovers. Though that being said I
realize you haven't seen a good team in Provo for awhile so I'll excuse your
That's too bad for BYU. They had that band of brothers thing going for them and
i guess it was a band of mothers playing last night. Better luck when Utah
State comes down.
Benderman1I don't get how people can give the Utes credit? What
exactly did they do to win the game?----------- -----------You can't figure that out yourself?Well let met help...1) Utah's offense came alive against a so called good defense: 481 yards
(over 200 rushing with over 7 yards per carry).2) BYU's rush game
was crushed by the Ute defense. Total yards 11 with 22 carries which is 0.5
yards per carry. For comparisons against the mighty SEC defense BYU was 2.9 per
carry, against the mighty Big 12 defense BYU was 1.9 per carry.3)
Out coached, out hustled, and out played even with a injured QB.
Benderman1: Please, get a grip on reality. Yes, if someone leads 13-7 late in a
game and their defense is playing very well and they lay the ball down in the
end zone and lose 14-13 you can claim they gave the game away. However, let's
look at some stats from last night outside the turnovers... Utah 481 yards of
offense, Utah 242 yards rushing, Utah 239 yards passing. Not to mention the
Utah defense might have had just a little bit, perhaps just a little to do with
Hey Cougar fans, I think I am hearing your old fight song from the 50's and
60's. You appear to know it well even now. "Wait Till Next Year."
Or as Madden has furthered it to, "Wait for 2 or 3 years." We will
probably be hearing this old true and blue fight song ad infinitum.
Bluto,Didn't you learn from last year about the mistake of claiming
your oponent didn't really win the game in spite of what the final score says?
BYU was outplayed and to downplay that by claiming they gave the game to us is
not being honest. The Utes played well. Many of the miscues by BYU were caused
by the play of our team. So be big enough to give credit where it's due.
Bronco seems to have learned that lesson.
My family left the stadium early because BYU completely gave up. The majority of
the Ute fans seated near me last night at LES were screaming profanities all
game long and were just plain unpleasant to be around. Even the Utes band was
in on the poor conduct, watching the BYU band and launching into song every time
they started to play. Bad environment in the stadium, bad football
game getting whipped by our rivals at home, especially bad effort by BYU on the
field. Bad night to be on national TV showcasing our newly-independent brand.BYU needs to fix some things fast: Bench Heaps and give Lark a chance.
Put Doman on a very short leash and hold him accountable for averaging one
offensive touchdown per game. Fix the running game: 0.5 yards per carry is not
going to win ANY games. Most of all, hold EVERYONE accountable for quitting
before the third quarter was over. There is no excuse for giving up. Ever.
I predict nothing will hurt BYU in the long run as much as being a team that
doesn't have the will to finish games, even if we are losing.
mahblah77,Please don't disrespect the Utes by claiming this win is
any less impressive because of BYU's poor play. Leading up to this season and
even this game it BYU fans were all about national titles, Heaps for Heisman,
and Doman for OC of the year. Now that has all come crashing down, but rather
than admit the Utes are just simply better than you thought we were you'll throw
your boys under the bus. Nice.
I don't know much about this "Band of Brothers" stuff, or any 'higher
calling' as mentioned and lampooned in several posts here, but does anyone
remember back when BYU's offense could score three touchdowns in a single
quarter?Those were good times.This year's offense has
taken three games to score three touchdowns. Something is clearly wrong, and
right now, I'll point the finger at Doman. If he is really a smart and talented
OC, it's time for him to get off the sideline and up in the press box where he
can see the whole field to make adjustments. If Jake Heaps still needs his hand
held on the sideline by Doman the QB coach, it's time to see what a different QB
Dear BYU fans,After seeing so many of my Y-fan friends in deep
depression today, and hearing so many people calling for jobs and jumping ship,
I have to say the following in all sincerity:You guys really, REALLY
need to stop expecting to go to a BCS bowl every single pre-season. It just
isn't justified. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the football team
themselves (or Bronco himself) having the highest of goals. But the team's
goals and the fan's loudly advertised expectations should not be the same thing.
We've actually been there. Twice. And we still do not expect it every single
year. This is why we make it through blowouts like we suffered last season.Your ship is not sinking, one train wreck doesn't change the fact that
BYU is still a great program. Just be more realistic on years you have teams
that are unproven and over hyped. You'll be happier fans, and will seem less
annoying and more credible in the eyes of other fan bases. Go luck with the
remainder of your season.Sincerely, A Ute fan who enjoys
the rivalry and wants to see BOTH programs get better.
unbelievable the comments some byu fans make about utah not winning, but byu
losing that game. incredible. do you realize that the good teams force
takeaways, put the ball in the endzone, have defenses that shut down running
games to 11 yards?! haha. I feel sorry for the sensible fans who have to deal
with the delusional fans who still think byu's a good team, and furthermore they
blame the coaches...7 turnovers, really? ya, that's coaching...
I said this before: this is what you get when your coach saysfootball
isn't his priority. Cougar fans, you have the power to stop this
madness. Boycott the remaininghome games and watch Bronco get kicked to
the curb like a 2 loss Nebraska coach.
Please Consider Bronco Mendenhall for the very next opening as a General
Authority as soon as possible. We need a head coach that takes
Football coaching as the most important thing he is hired to do. Seperation of Church and State.Seperation of Football coaching and
Prosliting. We need a coach that puts the matter and coaching of
his team #1.No more cute slogans. Its embarrasing. Why
did we ever allow Utah to come onto our home field dressed top to bottom in
their full red uniforms as though this was a home game for themselves instead of
white tops as a visiting team. Who gave away that Psychological advantage to
our #1 rival 40 miles up north. Dont ever do that again. Please!!!I
cry for our Cougars that have the most talent they have ever had in history but
we dont understand how to use it.
Back in the 1970s, at Rice Stadium, I recall a very frustrated Utah fan beating
his head against a metal guard rail. After reading these posts, sounds like
many BYU fans were in the same frame of mind while attending the game in Provo
last night.Maybe Security doesn't tolerate that these days.
Let's face it, it was painfully obvious that the BYU players lack the physical
conditioning to last a whole game. I don't beleive it was the Utes' 1st string
offense that was running all over them at the end was it?
Yeah that ESPN deal is great! What a wonderful way to show everyone you belong
on the big stage Cougars. If you are a real BYU fan, you will watch the
thrashing replay on BYU TV!
Not even going to read the comments because I am guessing some are pretty dumb.
I just wanted to say Congrats to the Utes. I do not think BYU is
that bad but last night they were. The Utes showed up and BYU did not. The
better team won yesterday. Now to see if BYU can turn it around and the Utes
can continue down their path. Best to both teams. Would like to see both do
well from here on out. See you next year in SLC
Sammyg manned up early on and posted his congratulatory comments, which I 'm
sure were pretty tough as they would be for any Ute troll had it gone the other
way.Duckhunter is still MIA, perhaps even desperately trying to spin the
game results into one of his famous trolls. Poor guy..... his team lost the
game but more importantly he's also lost what little respect anybody had for
him. Is anybody, including most Cougar fans, going to take him seriously the
rest of the season?
To samyg and 1984 for lifeI have new respect for you. You talked the
smack but were men enough to congratulate the Utes on the win.To
Duckhunter, Riverton Cougar, Starfarer, Varitas......, etcMan up and
admit you were wrong or stay of these boards.Go Utes!
A good team worth anything would have put up at least 70 on BYU as crappy as the
Cougars played. Nice little win, utes.
@ DUCKHUNTER-- July 21st." As far as the secondary's are concerned,
well, let's just say I'm willing to wager BYU's will be superior to utah's this
year. And those other supposed "talents gap(s)" you are refering to,
well where are they? BYU's oline is unquestionably superior to utah's, not even
close. BYU's wr's are superior, I can't even name any of utah's. BYU's rb's are
superior. utah is trying to get by with a converted rugby player, a jc transfer
and a freshman. BYU's LB corp is superior as well, there isn't a LB on utah's
roster as good as BYU's top 6.I understand you are dleusional and a
homer but there is no need to make a fool of yourself. LOL! "
Duck that J.C. transfer just went off for nearly 180 yards and your highly
taunted, " superior ", running backs burned the Utes for 11 for the
entire game---that's 2.75 yards a quarter ! And how about that fellow you called
a BYU reject--- Jake Murphy ? 3 plays--touchdown ! Stay tuned Duck.. I
have a lot of crow for you to eat before the Humble Pie portion of your schedule
runs it's course. Scoreboard LOL !!!!

I could not agree more.===I pesonally haven't posted
yet, because last night was clearly Utah's second finest hour (The Bama
Sugarbowl was), and one that the Utah fans deserved. With a housefull
of Utah and BYU fans, I was very happy for my Utah brothers last night. As the
BYU blue trickled out at the beginning of the fourth quarter, I hung with my
Utah buddies, and enjoyed their elation. That is what sports are all
about. Some nights things just go your way.Congrats to Utah, and all
of their fans.Personally, I have not problem with any posts by
either side on many of these articles. That is what fans do.Truthsandwich made an extremely classy post and one that all fans of
both schools need to read and ponder.BYU's season is not over
yet.No one needs to be fired. It's a loss for BYU, and it is one
that both teams need to keep in perspective.Utah needs to keep their
foot on the gas, and make the state proud.BYU needs to learn from
what happened, and move on.

Give Ziggy a chance to run the ball.
Just one request to all fans from both schools. Can we just leave
both the Y and U ties at home on Sundays from now on. Church is not the place
for sports. Watercoolers and sports bars / restaurants are the perfect place to
show your school pride. (That has been my opinion for may years).Once again, I am happy for my Utah fanbase friends. What a fun night to be
had, and I wish you many more this season.BYU fanbase friends,
remember that you have wonderful families, and this was just a game.Life goes on.I get tired of the pre-game smack, but Utes, your
team earned the postgame smack this year. You won the scoreboard HUGE. Smack
away. That was an awesome display by your team last night.Congrats
to Coach Whittingham, his staff, and all the players for your efforts.Kyle is a classy guy, and this was a well deserved game.To the BYU
staff and players, forget about this one and move onto the next one.Life is good.I have played and coached many sports for a long
time. Nights like last night are special. Enjoy this one.
Oklahoma and Texas are in active negotiations with the Pac 12, Pitt and Syracuse
are looking to move to the ACC. The Big East will become a basketball only
conference, the Big 12 will die. The super conferences are coming and BYU is
teetering on the edge of college irrelevance...more so.Maybe BYU
should fold the football program and use the tithing money on other outreach
that doesn't make my church look bad.
The game was pathetic, and I'm a Ute fan. But I expect a lot more from BYU. The
one thing I find interesting is that the Cougar's hardest hitting and most
punishing runner was moved to the defense, and other than kick returns he didn't
even play until the game was a lost cause. Hey Mendenhall! Here me now and do as
you are commanded. Put Mike Hague back on offense and build a running game, for
crying out loud! Sadly, it will probably never happen. DiLuigi is a great
runner, but he's not the whole answer. You also need a fast power runner, and
that's Hague. He's a team player so he'll play where you tell him, but on this
one you got it all wrong. You are wasting some great talent, and you have no
running game. If that was Brandon's idea, then it was one of the first of his
many mistakes. Brandon may be a great QB coach, but he's far from ready as the
OC. Give Mike the ball! By the way, Nelson showed 10X the spirit and guts as
Heaps, so maybe there's hope to come, but don't waste Hague.
Hey Pack 12 proud,You are mistaken when you say, "Sports at byu is
not missionary work", you are technically correct. However, BYU is an LDS
school and that school is required to uphold all the standards the LDS church
lives by. The mission of the LDS church is to bring people unto Christ. They do
this by teaching the gospel, serving others and setting a good example just like
the Savior would. There fore, when the BYU football team puts more importance on
a fireside where the gospel is being taught or do not put the same importance in
the result of a win compared to a lose but instead focuses on how they played
the game, means they are trying to live by the standards that have been set
forth by the church and the Savior. In other words, they are indeed performing
A couple of observations. One Heaps looks like he is terrified of getting heat
and Bronco has no fire or passion on the sideline. He just sort of stares off
into space it seems like.On the other hand Kyle yelled at his kicker
when he missed the PA when it was 30 to 10. He looked right at him and said
"What is wrong with you." I was dying of laughter. Kyle shows emotion
and passion.Bronco needs to realize they are not playing to see who
goes to heaven.
Congrats Utes.Thats about it for me on that. Just for everyone elses
information I would still rather get blown out by 50 than ever think of being a
ute fan. As for all you BYU fans who want to cry and jump ship, good bye, who
wants you anyways. Go Cougs its not the end of the world, fix it and
lets get this thing rolling again.
Is it too late for ESPN to cancel their million dollar agreement with BYU and
get a refund? It appears that BYU is auditioning for entry into the Big Sky
Conference. I am just grateful that I had the vision to cancel my season tickets
earlier this year once the schedule was announced after being a loyal fan for 12

Whatever helps you sleep.Oh and here's some math:54 + 7 from
the blown helmet-to-helmet call + untold 4th quater points the Utes could have
scored had Whit not shown mercy (i.e. had the Utes not pulled their starters and

of time on clock) = >70.I hope duckhunter's reply is a rich as
As a BYU fan the only two people I can feel happy for after last nights game is
Norm Chow who wasn't treated fairly by BYU when he was forced to leave and
Robert Anae who was made a scape goat after last season. BYU's offense has
sure been great since Chow and Anae have left BYU. The Utes should treasure
having Norm Chow and the University of Arizona are lucky to have Robert Anae.
Nice game Cougs. Was that your JV team?
byronbca | 8:55 a.m. Sept. 18, 2011 Salt Lake City, UTI don't know
which is more surprising, the final score or how quickly byu "fans"
will turn on their team. byu got killed because they couldn't hold onto the
ball, not because they were out coached. Utah's defense just overpowered byu's
offense.--------------I disagreeNot holding the
ball high-and-tight or with two hands inside the five? Coaching should've
drilled that out of them. Not falling on a fumbled snap anywhere near
the end zone? Ditto. Not falling on a muffed kick at the goal line
with 11 players bearing down on you? Double Ditto. Not being in the
booth? Coaching error.Taking too long in the huddle? Reflects
coaching and pace of practice.I don't have a beef with the defense
breaking down late. They've had their finger in the dike for 3 games. The gave
out, they didn't give up.I have a beef with is preventable errors,
and though the players, not the coaches, committed most of them, it is the HC's
job to prepare them, not coast the last days of fall camp. Fans are tired of
preseason rhetoric, post game excuses.
On Bronco's coaching style that puts football 4th on the priority list. The only
words Vince Lombardi is on record as having regretted he uttered "Winning
is not the most important thing it is the only thing".
Heaps will never be a high performing QB because his throwing motion is
fundamentally flawed. Pay close attention to how the ball travels on throws
between 10-30 yards. The nose is up, which causes the ball to sail, resulting
in "over throws". He has been taught to finish his throws in the
hallway resulting in leaving his hips open with no snap of the wrist. When
under pressure, his mecanically flawed technique is painfully obvious. Its time
to red-shirt this kid and fix his delivery if he's going to be the great hope
Doman thinks he can be.As for Doman; I'm not dure the pie he has
eaten over the last three games will humble his arrogance! Dang good college
player, not too good of a coach (though Bronco thinks he's the best QB coach in
the country). The best QB/OC coach in college football history was at LES on
Saturday night, but he was wearing red!Lots of work boys!
@The Hailstorm- Awesome! I'm not sure how you knew to save that post, but I
wished I had some from the last week as well. I love how the Y fans were all

the game away and the U didn't do anything to deserve it, that's the reason most
of us despise you guys, you aren't accountable for anything! Man up and admit
you were beaten by a better, more prepared, better coached team with more heart
The red flag is Bronco's constant reminders of how ---Byu football is different
and serves other purposes---. Bronco, WE ALREADY KNOW THAT, we are aware that
BYU is owned by the LDS Church, we know, we know. For you to repeat it as much
as you do makes me think that it is being used as a built in excuse to accept
losing when it happens.
My favorite phrase is on my mind. "wait til next year".
As Cougar fans have been touting since last Spring...THANK GOODNESS
THIS GAME WAS ON NATIONAL TELEVISION FOR PEOPLE EVERYONE TO SEE!Cougar fans favorite word since the Utah Pac-12 invite has been exposure. And
they got exactly what they've been asking for:On Saturday, BYU was
EXPOSED as a BCS-caliber wannabe. Take note recruits. As long as
you're comfortable being second fiddle in your own state, and having your season
relegated to nothing after week #2, BYU is the place for you.
Trials make our faith grow stronger;Truth is nobler than a crown. We

All of this with a mediocre qb who just had surgery and won't even practice

Duckhunter, please tell us what happened.
ESPN looked closely at the past three decades of overall success when they
decided on the BYU broadcast deal. Plus, the TV sports world and landscape has
changed and opened up. ESPN doesnt care about one game. And really, much of this
game had some amazing hits, some real excitement and solid drama to it. Much of
the game made for good television.BYU has a national following.
Something Utah will never have. And this strong national following spans ALL

I am officially out of the denial stage of mourning concerning this game. I
don't know what the other stages are so I will just skip to the acceptance stage
by accepting that byu may as well have been replaced by a high school team in
the 2nd half and got the trash beat out of them by the Utes, who continued to
play like a good College football team. Here's to the Utes making it to the
Pac-12 Championship game. After that game... I seriously hope you deserve it.
@ yankees27 & Dutchman For Daisy I'm saving his best for when he

@ MILMMTRegardless of all of your arguments, Utah still won. And

win 21-10. In Provo, against a team that is supposedly more talented and has a
brighter future. Your excuses for the loss make me, and everyone else, laugh. Do
yourself a favor and accept the fact that BYU got outplayed on saturday night.
@SoCalsurfer"BYU has a national following. Something Utah will
never have. And this strong national following spans ALL sports. But of course
ya probably have to live outside of that valley to understand and comprehend
this fact."You need to step outside of your local LDS wardhouse
once in a while.Because outside of LDS wardhouses around the nation,
BYU has ZERO national following. They have members, not fans.
@SoCalsurferYeah, your whole "national following" just
followed (nationally on ESPN) the biggest BYU beatdown in the Bronco era. Its
okay though, because like the 90% of BYU nation that resides in Utah, those
outside of the state probably stopped following midway through the third
"A loss like this, especially when we knew the game could be so much
different, you walk away from this game just shaking your head just because of
the fact that we gave (Utah) the game." - Jake HeapsYou would
think a 44 point shellacking would be enough to humble a BYU player into maybe
giving a little credit to the other team for beating them.Guess not.
The Best of Duckhunter Vol. 2May 16th, "There are at least 5
games on BYU's schedule this year that I am looking forward to more than the
utah game. BYU plays utah every year so it is simply same old same old and not
really exciting. Also I think utah will be extremely mediocre this year and not
really much of a game to watch."May 16th, "BYU does not
need to play utah to keep getting their recruits, those guys will come anyway. I
wouldn't mind ending this charity game to utah."May 25,
"No one outside of the trailer parks of west valley city has an affinity
for the university of utah until they actually go there. No one dreams of
playing for them while growing up, no one gives them even half a thought until
they are recruited to go there."Duckhunter, I guess those kids
from the trailer parks play some pretty good football don't you think? LOL

Where's Stockton have taken a vow of silence.Thankfully.===You would think that maybe Utah fans have had enough of Duckhunter?Yet they beg him to post. What do you expect the guy to
say? He's been blown out of the water.I say let sleeping

guy to post.Personally, I would like to hear his input, but I'm not
so desperate for his response that I go back a post previous posts. If you feel the need, I believe that he posted after last years Vegas Bowl
beatdown that the Utes took against a WAC team.===I have
no problems with the comments from either BYU or Utah coaches or players. They
are the ones who strapped on the pads.Keep it classy Utes.Dutchman, you have showed class in many previous posts. You are better than
Hey williary, I expected the skewed responses from local ute fans. Traveling
once in awhile can help one make an accurate judgement. And, the Utes do just
fine in drawing fans from those LDS meeting houses as well. Where do most Ute
fans and contributors actually come from? BYU draws fans on the
road. Far more than Utah. ESPN studied this out for years. So ESPN inked the
broadcast deal with BYU because of a strong national following and fan base. It
was a good business decision, finalized not because of emotion and gut feel, but
because of real numbers, numbers Utah just does not have. One very weird rivalry
game isnt enough to shake the foundation of a win win television deal. Finally, in my opinion Utah and Colorado needed the Pac12 more than the Pac10
needed Utah and Colorado. It was a very very fortunate window of opportunity for
Headline-Shocking rout? Whats that talk? The "wonderful ones" quite
frankly are not that good and everyone for a couple of years have been beating
Heaps drum, now they will probaly want to fire Mendenhall or replace Heaps with
Nelson I suppose. Oh well this whole fantasy dreaming thing just goes with the
territory! Your independents fans, whats a loss or two or three, or four or five
and so on? The toilet "Bowl" will call.
Veritas Aequitas.Take a break. Just taking a few friendly jabs as
Duckhunter often does with me. I do not expect him to respond. I am sure his
spin would be much the same as other BYU fans that the cougs gave the game away
but they still have superior athletes, the best recruits, the best facilities
that money can buy and a huge national fan base. The funny thing is only BYU
fans believe that spin because Chip Brown's sources are telling him that Texas
does not want to rebuild the Big 12 with the likes of teams like BYU. But
anyway, Veritas, thanks for manning up regarding your outlook of the game.
@Dutchman:It's all good. I too would like to hear what he has to
say. I'd personally like him to come out and congratulate the Ute team. I thing
the coaching staff and team put on a great show. I think Duckhunter has it in
@SoCalsurferSome facts:ESPN signed a deal with BYU
because outside of the weekly WAC Friday night game, and one single Pac-12
football game a week on Saturday night, they are completely shutout of big time
football on the West coast. And with ESPN darling Boise now on the MTN, take
what you can get if you're ESPN.And if you believe that a guy as
intelligent as Larry Scott would add Utah and Colorado to simply throw them a
bone, with no benefit to the conference, you must also believe that Santa Claus
just may leave you a new "Quest to Not Let Utah Destroy Us Again"
t-shirt under the tree this year.Like I said, BYU has many members
all over the country. Who will turn a BYU game on, have no clue what's
happening, pay no attention to the game, and will either ignore the result if
it's bad, or will celebrate if it's positive. Members, not fans.
SolCalsurfer is right, Utah was in the right place at the right time when the
PAC took their grab at the Big 12 last year, and only got CU.Now the
entire landscape is imploding, and it may appear that Utah will be the only
pre-2010 non-AQ to make it into the new super-conferences structure.
@SpanishImmersedYou're right. 2005 Fiesta Bowl2009 Sugar BowlUtah was in the right place, at the right time.
The BCS.Unlike BYU, who were sitting at home wearing their
"Quest For Perfection" shirts watching Utah dismantle Alabama.
BYU fans now you know how Ute fans feel when they play BSU! To be completley
out coached and out classed in every aspect of the game. And wasnt there a lot
of Cougar fans talking smack about how much better Heaps was going to be then
Kellen Moore coming out of the same state? Hows that looking now?
@williary Here are some bonafide facts, without the valley-view:Nelsen ratings for BYU-Ole Miss: 1.5 espn, for BYU-Texas, 1.6 espn2, for
Utah-BYU, 0.6 espn2. In looking at BYU's first two games I can guarantee BYU was
not the reason for a full Nielsen point loss in the Utah Game. One point equals
about 1,200,000 us households. BYU enjoys a national following,
including members and and millions of fans. Utah doesnt bring that volume with
them. And ESPN has looked at BYU Sports for three decades. It was not a flavor
of the month deal!
Hi SoCalsurfer....I have to disagree with you on the National Following. I lived
in Alabama from 1990 to 2006 and other than the local ward members, could not
find a person that knew much about BYU. Only a few would remember some of the
QB's that came during the 80's (Young, Jimmy Mac) but would also say something
about "What Conference do they play in"....isn't that the weird Mormon
School. In fact in my 16 years of living in the South and doing a lot of travel,
I never came across a BYU fan or person that had an interest in BYU that was not
a member.Never fear Utah.....folks in the south new less about the
Utes. That changed quite a bit in 2004 and 2008.BYU does not have a
National Following other than its members and there is no "storied"
history. I bet you could not find 5 people in an Alabmam Walmart that would
believe you when you said they won the 1984 NC. And honestly....they only played
3 teams that had a winning record...two teams that went to a bowl....no teams
that finished near the top 20. Keep Dreaming
hey socalsurfer,i'll give you the higher ratings for the ole miss
and texas games, but don't say the lower rating was strictly because of utah
like they were some huge drop off no one was interested in. everyone else in
the country was watching florida state vs oklahoma. that game received a 3.0
Hey HS Sport Dude, I can sympathize with a 1990s view from Alabama,
espcially during the wac and mwc years. Do any other schools but Auburn and the
Tide get any media coverage within Alabama? An ESPN deal gives a free and
independent BYU the step up that a wac and mwc could never offer. A very smart
win win. My view of BYU has always been from out of state and there is a blue
tide rising. Hey Butters, yes, hard to do battle with a
Florida State vs Oklahoma game. But half of that game rating should have been
achieved. The Nielsen results say a ton about actual team followings.
socal,i agree about the tv deal not being just a spur the moment
thing. in fact, i think it's smart business on espn's side and both sides get
what they want out of the deal. if you look at byu's schedule, they're put in
good time slots to get ratings and exposure, much like boise state was last
year. i'm not saying they can't consistently get those ratings either i'm just
trying to defend notion that people didn't tune in because byu was playing utah.
i don't know exactly how the ratings system works, but u/y, on espn 2, was up
against ou/fsu (abc) and miami/ohio state (espn). besides, the game was over
midway through the 3rd quarter anyway
I have a confession to make. As a proud BYU fan, season ticket holder, alumnus,
and "blue blood", I was feeling a bit too proud. So I read the famous
talk on Pride by President Benson (1989), and I prayed for increased
humility. This game was the answer to my misguided prayer.I apologize to the rest of Cougar Nation that you had to suffer for me to
learn my lesson.
MILMMTYou said:Chow and Whigingham are both BYU
throwbacks. It's won't be long before Utah gets their butts kicked all over the
PAC 12. Money does not win football games, teams do. The fun is just
beginning.Any team who can't win and win big with 7 turnovers on
their side should be embarrassed. All Utah did tonight was not embarrass
themselves. Oh, by the way Utes the REAL score of the USC game was 23 - 14 (in
case you did not hear).I could score three times myself in this
game. Utah earned points = 21.The speed of the Pac 12 will eat Utah up.Dude are you serious? You sound like a 3 year old throwing a fit for not
getting a piece of candy.Utah did what it was suppose to do against
a sub-par opponent. Grow up and realize the world does not revolve around the
Utah Valley "Bubble".Go Utes!
@SoCalsurferSo now you're blaming Utah for the worse ratings for the
Utah/BYU game? It's not Utah's fault they kicked the living snot out
of your pathetic Cougars, causing BYU members, I mean fans, to turn off their TV
sets.Oh wait, actually it was Utah's fault. And if your
contention is that Texas has more fans than Utah, thus a higher rating for that
game, I think you finally said something that makes sense. As I've
said since the summer, all BYU fans have to talk about is their Exposure.Because when they talk about what's actually happening on the football
field, they have to deal with getting EXPOSED by Utah, 54-10, in the house
SoCalsurfer.....Like I stated....I traveled the entire Southeast and Northeast
significantly during those years. BYU was not a national name at all. I heard
many people talk about the real college football programs like Alabama, Auburn,
Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, USC, Georgia....the list
goes on. Being from Utah and most people I did business knowing that, the
discussion of college football and who the heck I could cheer for from Utah came
up many times. Again....people that heard about BYU only remembered a few QB's
that came from there. The only folks I ever talked to in the 90's and early 00's
that really knew about BYU were LDS people and most of them knew very little
about the fooball team other than they were suppose to cheer for "God's
University". You would have though that finding a non-LDS fan
would have been more possible in those years as BYU was kinda competitive. That
has changed now as BYU has not really shown up in the top 25 much the last 5
years.I'm quite positive that any National Following for BYU is 98%
LDS and 2% other or worse.
HS Sport Dude:"That has changed now as BYU has not really shown
up in the top 25 much the last 5 years."BYU Final season ranks:
2006: #202007: #172008: #162009: #142010: NRI am not sure where you are getting your data, but your statement is
completely erroneous. 4 of the past 5 seasons BYU has been ranked in the Top
25. Only last year was BYU unranked. BYU has reached as high as #8 in 2008, so
the Cougars have even been a top 10 team within the past 3 years. For
all who are using the game last week to "prove that Utah is a BCS caliber
team and BYU clearly is unready to play at the BCS level" just remember
that some time Utah will lose to BYU. By the same logic, can the reverse
conclusion be made the Utah is not up to BCS-level and BYU is?I can
already hear your excuses that Utah can have an off day, the refs made bad
calls, Utah was not pumped up for a meaningless non-conference game, etc.Remember not to make too broad of conclusions from just one game.
A question for HS Sport Dude:The ESPN deal is based on TV sets, and
there are millions of Latter-Day Saints in all 50 states. No matter where BYU
goes, there are fans. When BYU games are on TV, fans watch. I don't think
anyone cares what religion the fans are if they are filling stadium seats and
watching games on TV.Why is it a problem for you if BYU fans are
mostly LDS? There likely are more BYU fans than fans of most other colleges
around the country outside of the big teams with national followings that you
listed. Anyway, ESPN feels there are enough BYU fans to justify
giving BYU a contract as an independent for eight years, no matter what religion
their fans are. I guess that's all that matters. But just out of
curiosity, who is it that is telling LDS fans that they have to cheer for
"God's University" as you termed it, and what is your issue with BYU
fans being mostly LDS?
F. ChildIve already statedI am not a Utah Fan. I love real football
played in the SEC and Alabama is my team. BYU's record against the SEC is 2 wins
4 losses. Not good. The two wins are against Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Typical bottom feeders. Two things really matter in terms of National
Attention. #1 Where you end up. #2 How many weeks in the top 25.So....BYU from 2003 to 2010 (8 years) best season ending ranking (AP) has been
#12. Not so impressive. But that Utah Team has been in the top 5 two times
during the same period and beat my beloved Tide. (smashed them)For #
of Weeks in the Top 25 from 2003 to 2010 there are a total of 132 weeks. BYU has
been ranked 33 of them or 25%.2003 0 of 16 weeks2004 0 of 16
weeks2005 0 of 16 weeks2006 6 of 16 weeks2007 4 of 16 weeks2008 16 of 16 weeks Utah finished #2 and had a more legit argument to a NC
than BYU ever had.2009 7 of 16 weeks2019 0 of 16 weeksEnjoy!!!
@FC: an 8-4, 9-3 Arkansas or South Carolina will consistently be better than a
10-2, 11-1 BYU. Arkansas ended up with a 4-3 record against teams ranked in the
final top 25 last year, that is right, they played a third of the final top 25.
BYU has never played a schedule remotely as difficult as this. LSU, Alabama,
and Florida are usually a notch above theses two teams. The 2008 Sugar Bowl was
considered a stunning win for Utah. When BYU played against Alabama (and lost)
in the late 1990s, Alabama was at a program low point. SEC football
at the top half of the conference is a completely different quality of play that
BYU has ever experienced. The football is just better down there and it is not
just for 1 or 2 games, but at least 5 to 7 truly high quality opponents. I love
SEC football and there is not nor has there been any point in time where BYU
truly compared. Go ahead and admit it's true, you will like it!
So HS Sport Dude, I live in our nations number two television market. I
follow all sports very closely because sports happens to be my career. We see a
ton of BYU exposure out here in this market. Thankfully a lot more exposure
since BYU jettisoned the Mountain. What we see or hear nothing about in socal is
Alabama. We heard of a Coach named Bear Bryant and maybe that Heisman running
back a couple of years ago, but that is about it. So I think your view from
Alabama of BYU is actually what you wish it was. Read todays Desnews article on
school fan base, an article that this comment thread may have actually
generated. I disagree with the stats in the article, I think BYU has far more
fans, but I think the stats on Utah are correct. I have to laugh when some Utah
fans write in like that loss Saturday will crumble BYU's firm foundation. I
guess its ok for all of us to dream.
Come on SoCalsurfer....Alabama lays claim to 13 National Championships. The NCAA
also credits them with NC's in year 45, 62, 66, 67, and 77 that Alabama does not
count toward the 13. So the number is 18 NC's.BYU has 1 and that one
is very debatable. BYU did not beat a single top 20 team that year (that's all
they had then). They only beat 4 teams with a winning record. Of the teams they
played, only 3 of them went to a bowl game and the record for the bowls was 1-2.
This included the Michigan team that finished the season 6-6 and 4th place in
the Big Ten. BYU scrambled to beat a very injured Michigan team by 7 points that
also lost to Ohio State by 15 points, Iowa by 26 points, Michigan State by 12
points, Purdue by 2 points, and Washington by 9 points. The built in
LDS Fan Base rallied and sent thousands of letters to AP and UPI voters and
shamed them into a bogus NC vote.
And lets not even talk about how succesfull Ty Detmer was as a Pro.Watch the Tide's Heisman and see how they are suppose to be as a pro.
HS Sport DudeSo are you a Utah fan or a Tide fan? And why the comparison
between the Bama and BYU record? And how did BYUs National Championship get
into this discussion? Lets stay on track. What I said was we hear little about
Alabama out here in the number two TV market. We hear more about BYU and I am
sure all sports have something to do with it. The discussion has nothing to do
with Alabama of the 60s and 70s. The sports world and landscape has changed
since then. By the way, I am a USC Trojan fan first and I loved the Utah game!
I'm an Alabama Fan living in Utah. I graduated from Utah but when I was there,
football was a joke (early 80's). I'm more of a BYU Hater than a Utah Fan and
very proud to admit that. I've not been to a Utah game in years and will
sometimes watch on TV. If BYU is playing on TV and I'm not doing anything...I
will watch and root very hard against them. I've found nothing about the BYU
Football program that interests me and the fans drive me crazy. The typical
person that is a fan knows very little about football and especially about
college football history.I'm a big fan of the BCS as this eliminated
the possibility of 1984 ever happening again. I laugh now each time I hear a
Utah fan talk about how hard their schedule will now be with no weeks off.
People around here, especially BYU fans never got that or believed a person that
felt BYU, Utah, or Boise State could never make it through an SEC schedule with
less than 4 losses. They do not have the talent and mainly the depth. College
football in Utah is 2nd Class at best
