Combined, the Bible and the Book of Mormon testify of the reality and divinity
of Jesus Christ. Jews, Gentiles, Christians, gospel scholars, scientists, and
any other seeker of truth have access to many of the most important records ever
written by the hand of man. The two volumes include but a small portion of what
was documented since the time of Adam. We can only hope that sooner or later
more and more 'books' carefully prepared by ancient holy men of God will come
forth by the gift and power of God. We can never know or read enough of the
infinite works of our Savior among the scattered people of the earth. For now,
God has given us the Bible and Book of Mormon as faith promoting disciplines
wherein we can find a fullness of hope and spiritual guidance. We also gain a
witness of modern day miracles.
It's well documented that the Prophet Joseph Smith described the Book of Mormon
as follows: I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of
any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer
to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book (Teachings of the
Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 194). I think it's safe to say Joseph Smith
was extremely familiar with the Bible and intended his statement to include this
in the discussion.
Religion can be modified to fit any need.
And in our course of study, LDS spend twice as much time studying the Bible as
they do the Book of Mormon. This is not to indicate the Book of Mormon is less
important, just that because of the volume of Scripture, there is more to study
in the New and Old Testaments.
That is true of any creed, Hutterite. What's your point?
The bible is a collection of many books written over a period of thousands of
years. How can anyone say for sure that those who made this
collection got all of Gods written word? It is very likely the Bible is NOT all
of Gods written word. Just looking at this from a probability perspective.
Pagen,No one is expecting you to believe the Bible because the Book of
Mormon says so or to believe the Book of Mormon because the Bible says so. Read
the books and all the while asking the Author (God) with sincereity and real
intent and he will tell you. Be prepared to follow.
@pagenDescribe to me what salt tastes like.
Brent bot, LDS spend twice as much time studying the Bible as they do the Book
of Mormon. Do they study lower criticism? It is not true that we do
not possess the original text of the Bible. What we do not possess are the
original manuscripts. We have accurate well- preserved copies of the original
text. There are some 5,700(many discovered after the KJV) early N.T. MS, and
they contain all or nearly all of the original text . The original text can be
reconstructed 99% accuracy. There is a distinction between the text and the
truth of the text. While we have 99% of the original text, 100 % of the truth
comes through. Over 26,000 N.T. quotes from the(2nd c) disciples of
the apostles and early church fathers can reconstruct the N.T. less 8 verses.
Example, If the original triangle was burned in a museum we have enough copies
to reconstruct it. Its like a 50,000 piece puzzle with 50 extra pieces.
RE: sharronaWe do NOT posses the original text of the bible,we have manuscripts written, in many instances, hundreds of years after
the the event told of in the manuscripts,NOTHING original about
them. While they may be translated correctly, their
content may not have the completeness you believe they have.Over
hundreds of years, from manuscripts NOT written by the original authors, much
can be lost.Hence the need for continuing revelation, living
prophets, second witnesses, books of scriptures by other sheep that Christ
visited.trusting manuscripts written hundreds later to contain the
full and unchanged truth, is not wise.
I love how the Book of Mormon (record of Joseph) and the Bible (record of Judah)
work together to testify of Jesus Christ. They fully compliment and reinforce
each other. We are a very fortunate people to live in a day when these records
are in our homes and at our fingertips to study to our hearts content. Together they demonstrate the unity of God's words across geographic and
generational boundaries, and "divide asunder all the cunning and the snares
and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow
course across that everlasting gulf of misery..."Thank you.
the Truth, books of scriptures by other sheep(John 10:16) . Who are the Other
sheep?, "Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to
the Gentiles, and they will listen!"(Act 28:28).Lower criticism
Christian Scholars like Daniel Wallace often debate secular scholars like Bart
Ehrmans or Islam Scholars on the accuracy of the Biblical texts and
completeness ,very informative. The science of Lower criticism of
the Bible. The textual critic's ultimate objective is the production of a
"critical edition. This contains a text most closely approximating the
original, which is accompanied by a critical apparatus that presents: the
evidence that the editor considered names of manuscripts, or abbreviations
called sigla, the editor's analysis of that evidence sometimes a simple
likelihood rating and a record of rejected variants often in order of
preference. Their have been several earlier and better MS like codex B
discovered and 2nd century Papyrus containing nomina sacra. Since the 1840's.
RE: cjb 4:26,you write: "How can anyone say for sure that those who
made this collection got all of Gods written word"?Perhaps a
better question is: how can anyone say any of the collection of myths came from
god, or even if there is a god. They are likely a collection of man's
superstitions, myths and dreams. If you study them you will learn most of them
have their roots in man made story telling that pre-dates the Bible or BOM or
Judisim by thousands of years. Something to think about, or perhaps take the
easy road and let others do your thinking for you. Why not. Are all the
different religions and churchs just different flavors, or are they different in
It's great to read about the Book of Mormon and the Bible's team
effort in testifying of Jesus Christ, two witnesses of God's word.
